subha_ekiwok my cd/dvd drive is not working and i want to use a ext hard disk for installation09:26
bray90820histo: how did you get the iso to load09:27
histobray90820: I'm sure there is some kernel mail list you can post to about the issue of having no cpu support for the Atom z2760 cpu09:27
bray90820histo: right now i am not talking about a kernal problem09:27
bray90820i am talking about being able to boot a live disk09:27
bray90820because i can't even get a boot menu to select what to boot09:29
histo3bray90820: it won't work trust me....09:29
razielCIAO09:29
bray90820but i can still try09:29
histo3bray90820: on my device holding I can add a efi selectino using the firmware via a filesystem. Or I can hold the down volume key and get a menu09:29
bray90820i can get into the uefi by holding down the volume button09:30
histo3bray90820: You cannot boot a linux kernel on it trust me. I wasted weeks of time before I realized what the issue was.  Once you overcome the fact that no distros even have 32bit efi images for grub. Then you will realize the kernel won't work with that CPU.09:30
bray90820but then where do i go from there09:30
bray90820histo3: i am aware it won't work09:31
histo3bray90820: you bug a kernel dev or intel to write support for that CPU, and notify me when it's present in the kernel so I can run linux on my tablet as well.09:31
bray90820but i just want to know how to boot from a disk on the thing09:31
bray90820histo3: i just want to know how to boot from a disk09:32
histo3bray90820: Hook up a usb keyboard and go into the firmware/bios. Or hold the volume up key to get in the firmware/bios may work.09:32
bray90820yes then what do i do09:32
histo3bray90820: You can't boot form a disk... Only if it has a GPT partion table and a 32bit efi file09:32
histo3bray90820: with a fat32 formatted efi partition09:33
bray90820what do you mean09:33
histo3bray90820: IT DOESN"T WORK09:33
bray90820what doesn't work09:33
histo3bray90820: Booting anything other than windows or stupid 32bit efi applicaitons that will get you no where. ATM the device only runs Windows09:34
bray90820but you were able to boot something atleast09:34
bray90820how did you do it09:34
bray90820even if it did hang09:35
histo3bray90820: I didn't boot anything just used a efi application09:35
bray90820lets pretend ubuntu worked09:35
bray90820how would i boot it09:35
histo3bray90820: You would boot off of usb with 32bit efi grub to load the kernel.09:36
bray90820but how09:36
cholbyI dated a guy named Ubuntu once.09:36
cholbyHe would "play the bongos" on my ass.09:36
cholbyfag09:37
histo3bray90820: if you want to see grub or efi shell load partition a thumbdrive with gdisk or cgdisk and create an efi partition. then format that partition to fat32 and put your grub32 bit file or 32bit efi shell file there. It will then be in the boot menu09:37
bray90820histo3: why wouldn't this work09:37
bray90820https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI09:37
histo3bray90820: Because you have a 32bit cpu and ubuntu doesn't have efi support for anything 32bit at the moment09:38
histo3bray90820: also the linux kernel doesn't support your CPU09:38
bray90820i have a 64bit cpu09:38
histo3bray90820: please take 5 seconds and read this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atom_(system_on_chip)#Operating_system_support_on_Cloverview09:38
histo3bray90820: No you don't have a 64bit cpu09:39
bray90820yes i do09:39
histo3bray90820: Intel has announced that it won't provide support for Linux on Cloverview family of Atom systems-on-a-chip.[49][50] This announcement has caused strong negative reaction from open source proponents.[51] A few days later Intel issued a statement saying that it has “plans for another version of this platform directed at Linux/Android"[51][52]09:39

bray90820but yes i do have an x86 processor09:45
gustavhisto3: But isn't it mostly a co-incidence that Linux runs on it? Like it was in the beginning.09:45
histo3bray90820: You can boot and load 32bit efi shell . Its on sourceforge somewhere. but you can only boot it from usb or plopping it in your current efi partition.09:45
histo3gustav: No idea I just know that this CPU will not run a linux kernel.09:46
histo3gustav: or anything other than Windblows09:46
gustavhisto3: Lazy hackers.09:46
histo3gustav: Who is?09:46
snugglor it includes some media-industry BS that they cant distribute09:47
gustavhisto3: Kernel developers. Linux runs on Macbook which isn't supposed to run anything other than Mac OS X.09:47
snugglso they release a new version without it09:47
snugglwouldnt be the first time09:47
histo3gustav: I idon't think they are lazy they do lots of work. As more people have this CPU someone smarter than I will be able to write code to make it work. And then I'd assume some of the distros would have 32bit efi grub files due to the demand.09:48
gustavhisto3: I have no idea why it doesn't work.09:48
histo3gustav: Probably some new instruction set or something goofy that hangs the kernel09:49

Yonneyauronandace: I am considering if I should reinstall with 10.04.4 for another year, or go with 12.04, but I strongly dislike the new unity, I want to stick with gnome and compiz13:47

awcI am having an issue with 13.04, but #ubuntu+1 is seemingly empty. Perhaps someone here could help? I installed today's updates, and it seems to have broken unity or compiz. The status bar at the top of the desktop and the dash/home bar on the left side of my screen are missing. running compiz --replace in the terminal is ineffective, and "sudo service lightdm restart" to restart unity results in a black screen with a flashing orange "_"13:52
YonneyI notice that several people have problems with some of this, and I dont want to loose the _very_ stable environment I have right now.13:52
ActionParsnipYonney: lxpanel, gnome panel and so on can do that, so can avant window navigatr and docky etc13:53

JoeyJoeJoI built a deb using 'checkinstall scons install' and it puts the binary file in /usr/local/sbin. How do I change it so it installs to /usr/sbin instead?15:38
theadminJoeyJoeJo: checkinstall is a wrapper around "make install". The ./configure provided by the package probably has a --prefix option, set that to /usr15:39
YonneyActionParsnip: I did also ask in #grub, but not enough feedback15:40
JoeyJoeJotheadmin: The package I'm compiling (gpsd) uses scons instead of ./configure. So would I have to set the prefix in scons?15:40

Yonneywilee-nilee: I have two OSes installed already, on a computer which has 2 physical hard drives with several partitions each. Now I will install a 3rd OS (Pangolin), but want to have some control on the boot menu, and know BEFORE I install, how I can get back to where I was, if something fails...15:45
coolotare you there thomas?15:46
ActionParsniplorddune: scroll up, the question replies will be useful15:46
wilee-nileeYonney, what OS's and which would you like to have control?15:46
Yonneyspecifically: I want to know that I am able to easily fix so I can boot into the old(present) OS afterwards, in case the installation is messed up, and the boot menu has changed or does not work...15:47
wilee-nileeYonney, What OS's are there now?15:47
Yonneywilee-nilee: the current OS in control is Ubuntu, using grub, and I want to know exactly where that grub installation is now before I make any changes. I dont know how or where to look to see where grub is installed right now.15:48
agonhello, there15:49
YonneyI know where to find its menu, and make adjustments to it, though, but I am unsure as of what exactly is "booting" it: I assume the MBR, but which MBR (2 hard disks...)15:49
wilee-nileeYonney, The bootloader is in the mbr that is the key, whichever OS is at the top of the grub menu is the controlling OS with grub.15:49
Yonneywilee-nilee: yes, I know that, but how do I locate grub? Is it the MBR of sda or sdb?15:50
wilee-nileeYonney, All you really need to know is how to reload the mbr, locating grub is not what you need.15:51
Yonneywilee-nilee: since I have 2 MBRs, I think it is quite important that I deal with the correct one, and leave the other alone, therefore I need to know which one loads grub...15:52
wilee-nileeYonney, On a ubuntu install if you do a manual install you can point the grub bootloader where you want basically, a partition or the mbr. A partition would be to save the control to the one you have now.15:52
Yonney(because I have 2 physical hard drives...)15:52
wilee-nileeYonney, Is this a uefi setup?15:52
Yonneyno uefi, standard bios, 2+ year old machine15:53
wilee-nileeYonney, There is a bootscript we use to identify key parts such as what mbr contains what and what grub files are in a OS, or boot files say in a windows setup and other ket info.15:54
wilee-nileekey*15:54
Yonneywilee-nilee: yes, but I want to continue adding to the existing menu, and keep the current one in control, just need to know where it is and how to fix it if someting fails...15:54
wilee-nileeYonney, TO keep the one in control in control do a manual inastall from the something other option, then point grub to the / of the install then run sudo update-grub in the controlling OS.15:56

tor_is it still to early to ask rare tail questions here? it is regarding hangs freeze and slow 3d games. i have a ATI HD 2400 graphics card but find no thirdparty driver23:13
t3hb055nuebDr_Willis: I am new to ubuntu, but I am learning fast. How would I add something to said usb, so It has on file drivers for any hardware it comes across.  Would like a fully operable os on the flash drive, that works on any pc. Internet or not.23:14
