baggins_Hi. Just installed ubuntu studio 13.04 on a dell E6500. no life in the wireless card. need help. drivers?19:42
SunStartry installing NDIS wrappers and wicd from the ubuntu software center19:42
baggins_okay trying19:44
baggins_fyi - the wifi indicator on the laptop is dark. switch for wireless is on, bluetooth light is lit.19:50
baggins_NDIS wrappers is looking for an inf file to install the driver.19:52
SunStargo to the manufacturer's website and download the drivers if you dont have a disk for it already19:53
baggins_wicd throwing error: could not connect to wicd's D-Bus interface.19:53
SunStarwindows driver*19:54
baggins_downloaded drivers from dell. they only had windows drivers.19:54
SunStaryeah thats what you want19:54
DarkEranot sure but is that a intel wifi card in the E6500?19:57
baggins_i found a bcmvwl.inf file in the vwl folder. that's the only inf file i can find.19:58
baggins_when i try that file it tells me: module could not be loaded. Error was: FATAL: Module ndiswrapper not found. "Is the ndiswrapper module installed?"20:00
baggins_@DarkEra - yes, they appear to be Intel20:04
baggins_So, how do I find out if the ndiswrapper is installed?20:15
baggins_tried two drivers. bcmvwl claims the driver is invalid. netwlx32 and netwnx32 say the hardware is not present.20:17
baggins_i just upgraded this from US 12.04 the wireless was working.20:18
DarkEraif it was working in 12.04 you should not have to download any drivers at all20:20
baggins_tried another driver: bcmwl5 says that hardware is present. Still getting the message about the ndiswrapper.20:21
DarkEraupgrading isn't flawless and can cause trouble20:21
DarkEradid you install ndiswrapper and reboot?20:21
DarkErabut then again, if it worked on 12.04 ootb you shouldn't need ndiswrapper or drivers from outside20:22
baggins_can't be sure ndiswrapper was installed. shouldn't it be installed with the driver?20:23
baggins_i'm trying a reboot. back in a few. tnx.20:26
baggins_i'm back DarkEra and SunStar. still no wifi  :(20:43
DarkEra<baggins_> can't be sure ndiswrapper was installed. shouldn't it be installed with the driver? ----> you need to install ndiswrapper or through the Software Center or Synaptic or through the terminal20:45
DarkErathen load that inf file in there and reboot20:45
DarkErabaggins_, but you said it worked on 12.04 but after the upgrade wifi stopped working... right?20:46
baggins_tru DarkEra20:46
DarkErain that case you don't need ndiswrapper or download a windows driver from my point of view20:47
baggins_i know, it's crazy right?20:48
DarkErasomething went wrong somewhere with the upgrade, that's for sure20:48
DarkErabut my knowledge is yet too limited to help any further. I would suggest to download the 13.04 iso and look if the wifi works from a live session20:49
baggins_will do. thanks DarkEra20:50
DarkErabaggins_, sorry i can't be of more help at the moment20:50
baggins_sokay, i appreciate the help20:51
DarkErathanks :)20:51
DarkErai hope you can get it sorted and we see you around some more20:52
baggins_right on20:52
DarkErai'll keep my fingers crossed and hope it works on the live session of the 13.0420:52
baggins_DarkEra - found the answer at http://askubuntu.com/questions/132894/how-to-fix-ndiswrapper-not-found21:12
baggins_fix suggestion #2 did the job.21:12
baggins_**ahhh*21:12
baggins_thanks again!21:13
DarkErabaggins_, that's great :)21:13
DarkErai hope it works now21:13
