FieldyI installed xchat which pulled in a bunch of X11 libraries and so on which I no longer need since I uninstalled xchat... how do I get all those no longer needed depdnancies cleaned up and removed?02:12
qman__apt-get autoremove02:12
Fieldyqman__: i've done that and it lists a few things, but they are the same things as before I installed xchat and removed it, do I need to run something else to update that list?02:13
qman__no02:13
Fieldyhm02:13
qman__if it's not finding any more to auto remove02:13
qman__something is left that depends on them02:13
qman__did you manually mark any additional packages as installed?02:13
qman__as in, did you apt-get install anything else?02:14
Fieldynah. i'll figure it out tomorrow, long work day, i could have very well made a mistake... one of many many systems :) thank you though I'll try with a clear mind later02:14
Fieldythank you02:14

EnichI am having a minor melt down here..   update-rc.d freeradius enable     seems not to be working,  my radius server needs to be manually started via sudo service freeradius start  after each reboot..   google and i have been all over it, but i cant seem to find the right solution.. anyone ?10:10
Enichhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/freeradius/+bug/1081509 <-- it seems there is more people with the problem..  anyone got a recommendation to how i can handle this issue.  it's starting to get to me11:06
uvirtbotLaunchpad bug 1081509 in freeradius "freeradius + mysql fails to start" [Undecided,Expired]11:06
Enichi saw that it expired, but the problem still exists.  i cant fiigure out what is going on11:09
Enichit verymuch seems like freeradius is starting before mysql  and therefor fails because it cannot connect and therefore shuts down or doenst finish the startuo11:09

Braden`Hello11:22
Braden`I have Ubuntu 12.10.x, and I am trying to upgrade to 13; however, when I do:  do-release-upgrade, it tells me that there are no new releases; however, I have it set correctly ("normal") in /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades.  How do I fix this?11:22
RoyKBraden`: it really should work11:41
RoyKBraden`: try apt-get update first11:41
RoyKI've tried 12.10 -> 13.04 a few times without issues11:41

roy2098Hello! Can I ask opinion here of Ubuntu-Xen-ZFS all-in-one "mega-server" (12 drive bays for 6 zfs mirrors, two  internal bays for OS mirror)14:21
RoyKroy2098: zfsonlinux or zfs-fuse?14:25
roy2098RoyK: hmmm - let me check14:27
irvi have a hyperv VM with ubuntu server in it, i want to expand the VHD and then expand the partition mounted at /14:27
irvwhat's the correct way to do this? i know how to make the VHD larger14:27
RoyKroy2098: if you haven't installed zfsonlinux kernel, it's fuse14:27
RoyKroy2098: and I'd recommend not using that in production - write speeds are rather on the low side14:28
roy2098RoyK: Setting up Xen and XAPI (XenAPI) on Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS14:28
RoyKno idea14:28
roy2098RoyK: write speeds low compared to what? I have VMWare hypervisor with interconnect to NAS - THAT is slow14:29
RoyKirv: google parted - then use resize2fs (given you're on extN)14:29
irvyeah i believe it's ext414:29
irvthx14:29
RoyKroy2098: write speeds with fuse are generally rather low compared to kernel-based drivers14:29
RoyKbut then - zfs is cool :)14:30
RoyKonly problem with zfs is that it doesn't re-balance the pool if you add more VDEVs14:30
roy2098RoyK: i think it is kernel-based - actually i know it is as i have installed on my current Ubuntu workstation and i need to pick xen kernel in order to use it14:30
roy2098RoyK: this all in one is only combination i know of (besides open indiana, illumos, smartos) that will enable zfs under everything14:31
RoyKthen it's probably zfs-fuse14:32
RoyKfreebsd has native zfs14:32
RoyKlinux doesn't14:32
RoyKlicense issue14:32
roy2098RoyK: yes i know this but xen on fbsd not yet there14:33
RoyKok14:33
* RoyK uses KVM 14:33
roy2098RoyK: kvm good stuff also i think14:33
roy2098RoyK all comes from same place14:33
RoyKI decided to run md over zfs on my home server because of MDs flexibility14:33
roy2098RoyK: not sure what md is... my whole thing is that zfs and large virtual machines are made for each other - ease of backup14:34
RoyKpersonally, I'd rather setup a dedicated storage box on native zfs and then use kvm/zen/vmware/something on another machine for virtualisation14:34
roy2098RoyK: well i have done just that elsewhere - nas4free as zfs storage14:35
RoyKand - don't enable dedup on zfs unless it's in a strict testing environment14:35
roy2098RoyK: dedup not enabled14:35
RoyKgood14:35
roy2098RoyK: but performance of my setup not the same as if i had all vm machines on the hypervisor box itself14:36
RoyKroy2098: but really - better separate the functions - some omnios install for storage and linux for virtualization14:36
RoyKscales better14:36
RoyKmultipath over separate 1Gbps links should scale well enough, we even use it for exchange14:36
RoyKover iscsi14:36
bejerHi, anyone run into problems with apparmor, slapd and /etc/ssl/private ? - when I change the ownership of /etc/ssl/private to openldap it works correctly but when keeping it as root, slapd is not able to properly access the private key and will not start properly)14:37
roy2098RoyK: my nas4free mounts via nfs, it could also use iscsi - but consensus seems to be no perf diffs14:37
RoyKroy2098: shouldn't be much of a diff, although NFSv3 has more overhead - NFSv4 should be good14:37
RoyKlocal drives will always be faster, though, but the flexibility of using separate storage is the win14:38
roy2098RoyK: I just know from my initial testing that a vm right on vmware hypervisor data store very different than mounting storage14:38
roy2098RoyK: you are certainly correct14:38
RoyKroy2098: testing will probably show it's slower than local storage, but then, is it fast enough?14:38
RoyKit probably is14:38
roy2098RoyK: good enough for everyday database reads/writes, not great for large data loads though14:39
RoyKperhaps try with 10Gbps ethernet14:39
roy2098RoyK: 10G ether sure, when money's no object14:39
RoyKor aggregated 1Gbps links14:39
roy2098RoyK aggregated links may be better14:39
roy2098RoyK but here's the other thing - server will start out in basement of residence14:40
roy2098RoyK to move in 1 yr to datacenter14:40
roy2098RoyK "mega server" only 2U14:40
RoyKthen the single 1Gbps link should suffice ;)14:40
roy2098RoyK = less cost in datacenter14:40
Psi-JackHow do you kill the status of an upstart job that claims to be in the state, start/killed, process 659?14:40
RoyKeven if it's slightly slower than local drives for bulk transfers14:40
Psi-JackI14:40
Psi-JackI'm trying to write an upstart job, so I'm in the process of mangling it to work as expected, but I can't proceed since I can't get it to clear that state,.14:41
roy2098RoyK: thanks for your help14:47
RoyKroy2098: just happy to help a roy - good luck :)15:00
ntzrmtthihu777question. I have ubuntu 12.04.2 server installed, but dpkg --get-selections | grep linux-headers shows linux-headers-generic-lts-quantal16:29
ntzrmtthihu777so whats the deal with that?16:29
sarnoldntzrmtthihu777: 12.04.2 was a hardware-enablement release that included the quantal kernel, xorg, and some other pieces, to provide better hardware support16:52
ntzrmtthihu777sarnold: ah, thankya. was not really concerned, but was curious about the reasoning.16:56
GrueMasterThe real critical components to an LTS release are the gcc/glibc api and the kernel stability.  By switching up to the 3.5 kernel, but having it built on the 12.04 stack, you get more platform support without sacrificing overall stability (and I see it's benefit daily here at work).17:26
GrueMasterThe rest of the package updates are mainly security updates and major bug fixes (rare, but happens).17:27

jonconleyIf I want to save a copy of pretty much every config file on all my linux servers along with all the changes, would that be looking into something like chef/puppet with a git repository for the config storage?20:59
sarnoldjonconley: chef or puppet is if you want to -manage- all those files on all your systems. as I understand them, they wouldn't help much for the ones not managed within the system21:01
sarnoldjonconley: look into etckeeper, see if that may be a better fit for what you want to do21:01
mariopHi, i have to install ubuntu server 12.04.2 on an headless machine (no monitor, no keyboard). Lets say the machine is configured to boot anything (usb, cdrom, hd), how can i do this?21:02
jonconleysarnold: Thank you. That looks perfect. I was feeling chef/puppet might be overkill, at least for now. Is RANCID still the standard for networking device configs?21:03
sarnoldjonconley: no idea on rancid, never heard of it :) but that probably says more about me than about rancid..21:04
jonconleysarnold: LOL. You are fine. It is old like me.21:04
sarnoldhaha21:04
SpamapSjonconley: you're kind of doing it backwards. Rather than duplicating all of the weirdness on one server onto another, what you want is to define what you want with something like puppet/chef/salt and then apply it to servers.21:05
jonconleySpamapS: They seem to have a rather steep learning curve. Which I am not opposed to, but I am taking on logstash+redis+git+elasticsearch for the current project and I am sick of trying to tweak a config here or there and later not being able to revert to what was working.21:09
