RusHi. im having a problem setting up apt-mirror. i deleted the lock file. but now have the following issue: proceed indexes:[Ssh cannot open archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/lucid/main/source/Sources.gz: No such file. (next line) apt-mirror: can't open index in proceed_index_gz at /usr/bin/apt-mirror line 449. Can someone please help?00:31
jeaHi Rus. I haven't actually set up an apt-mirror before, but I can try to help00:32
jeajared has set one up, so might know more (but might not be around at the moment)00:33
Rushi jea. Wow thanks for that. well im willing if you are : )00:33
Rusjea. i am a newbie with linux and ubuntu.00:34
Russo i have now idea what to do next.00:34
jeaWelcome to Ubuntu then :)00:34
Rusthanks jea : )00:34
jeacould you paste your mirror.list file into http://paste.ubuntu.com/ and paste the link here please?00:35
Rusjea. ive been trying to make sense of the stuff on the internet about apt-mirror. and have tried to follow the instruction on issues that arise eg. deleting the lock file. Okay. 1 moment.00:36
Rusjea. you mean the one located in /etc/apt ?00:38
Rusjea. paste.ubuntu.com/5652945 i think : )00:41
RusHello??? is anyone here??? am i still here???00:45
jeaI wasn't gone for that long00:46
jeaRus: I am back now. was just called away for a few minutes00:47
Rusjea. oh phew. no worries. i thought i must have done something wrong.00:48
Russeeming that im the newbie : )00:49
jeano, you were still here00:49
Ruswell so far. so good : )00:49
Rusjea. i have not edited the mirror.list file since ive installed apt-mirror.00:51
jeaI am just trying to track down possible options00:51
jeaok00:51
Rusjea. oh thanks. ive done the same. but im not understanding most of what i read : (00:52
jeasudo /usr/bin/apt-mirror00:55
jeasudo /var/spool/apt-mirror/var/clean.sh00:55
jeawhat happens if you run them?00:55
jeanote: running as sudo is not always a good idea, but might help to track the issue00:55
Rusjea. never tried. will try now. one moment please.00:55
RusOkay. just typed in first command. and recieved the following... apt-mirror is already running, exiting at /usr/bin/apt-mirror line 18700:58
Russhall i type in second command now?00:58
jeaok00:58
jeaum, not sure00:58
Rusi think this error means i need to delete the lock file.00:58
jeaum, not really00:59
jeait means there is already an instance fo that running00:59
jea*of00:59
Rusoh. Okay. : )01:00
jeaactually, yes, you probably should delete the lock file01:05
jeawhich I think will be located here01:05
jea /var/spool/apt-mirror/var/apt-mirror.lock01:05
jeaRus: you should delete the lock file01:27
jeahttp://nwlinux.com/configure-an-ubuntu-repo-mirror/01:27
jeawell, that makes it hard01:27
Rusjea. do know when might be the best time to try and catch jared?01:34
jeaRus: no, not entirely sure sorry01:36
jeahttp://nwlinux.com/configure-an-ubuntu-repo-mirror/01:36
jeaI was reading that01:36
jeaand this 01:37
jeahttp://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-599479.html01:37
RusOkay. i will just have to keep an eye out him him. i hope i am not keeping you from what you are wanting to do. and i thank you for your time and attention.01:38
jeathat is alright01:38
jeaaskubuntu is good, as are the forums01:38
jeaalso, is there a reason you are using lucid?01:38
jeabecause from memory it is no longer supported, so it might be harder to get help01:39
Rusjea. are you from oz? yeah. the problem is that im newy to linux. and the solutions posted are still hard for me to understand.01:39
Rusjea. yes. i have old pc's. i have been using 10.04 for the last year or 2. just to do basic things like web surfing. the odd letter.01:40
jeaYes, I am from Australia (Brisbane)01:40
Rusjea. oh Cool. im in sydney.01:41
jeaOk. I guess if you are able to, you might find a newer version to help with some things - newer packages, etc01:41
jeathere are a few people from Sydney in Ubuntu-AU01:41
* nrdb__ Portland, NSW myself01:42
Rusjea. oh Okay. i'll keep that in mind(new packages). well i hope to get to chat with them. am nearly thinking about paying someone to set up this apt mirror.01:42
jeawhat are you trying to get the apt mirror for?01:43
jeaI think tpg has an unmetered repository01:43
Rushi nrdb__. where is portland in nsw near?01:43
nrdb__Rus, Bathurst01:43
jeaactually, I appear to be wrong. there is no unmetered ubuntu repository01:44
Rusjea. thats handy to know. i hear i will need to download at least 30Gb for the mirror. im am not unlimited downloads : (01:44
jeafor tpg01:44
Rusarrrr damn : (01:45
jeai see why you might like it now01:45
Ruswhat do you mean jea?01:45
jeaWell, you would want the offline copy so you only download once and use it across all computers you have01:46
Rusmy main reason for 10.04. is that it runs quite well for my old pc's. but 12.04 gives them a cornary : (01:46
Rusjea. yes. exactly.01:46
nrdb__jea, have a look at approx01:47
nrdb__jea, it keeps a local copy of any packages download, for reuse latter01:47
jeaYes, I am aware of it01:48
jeabut I don't need such a cache, due to having unmetered access to mirror.aarnet.edu.au through bigpond01:48
nrdb__I have infinite download so I am not worried myself ether.01:49
nrdb__I have a VM that is dropping straight into a root shell, but I can't find out why, when I exit the shell it boots OK... this appeared to happen after removing apparmor (I don't know if that is important) ... but I do need the boot to proceed without stoping.01:52
Rus2coz i tend to use my 10.04 for a month or 2. then it seems to get bogged up from all the web surfing. so i just pop in the cd. use a fresh install. but now that the support for 10.04 is going/gone. i was hoping to keep a mirror here at home.01:52
jeaRus2: maybe something liku lubuntu would work better01:54
Rus2sorry i think i had to change my name.01:54
jeait is a lightweight desktop environment that should run on older computers01:54
jeajared could help with that also01:54
Rus2jea. yes. i have downloaded a copy recently. i am just use to and feel a little more familiar and safer with my 10.04.01:55
Rus2jea. is jarred from oz also?01:56
Rus2nrdb__. i use to live in portland......... Victoria ; )01:56
jeaJared is the Ubuntu-Au Team Contact, and is also from Brisbane01:57
Rus2jea. sounds awesome(ubuntu expert). does sydney have one/any?01:59
jeahttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/AustralianTeam/ContactUs02:00
jeaThere is nobody listed for Sydney, but I am sure there is someone02:01
jeaThere is a team meeting here tomorrow night02:06
jeaJared should be there then if you want to ask questions, Rus2 02:06
jeahttp://loco.ubuntu.com/meetings/ubuntu-au/574/detail/02:06
Rus2sorry. im not sure why my machine keeps disconnecting.02:23
=== nrdb is now known as 66MAAD3PY
jaredjea: I actually cheated and just ran it as a stand alone webserver.04:52
jaredI didn't bother with apt-mirror04:52
jeajared: oh, oops04:56
jeaI thought you had done it with apt-mirror04:56
jeaI will let Rus know next time he is on04:57
jaredNah that's alright. I then used some DNS config to make ubuntu.com and au.ubuntu.com to the laptop I rand it on. That then had the external usb drive set up with an rsync of the entire mirror04:59
jaredSo both archives and releases were available.05:00
jeathat almost sounds more complicated than apt-mirror (from the little I know about it)05:00
jaredYeah but it was more flexible as well.05:01
jeaThat would be worth it then05:01
jaredBecause that laptop was also running as a gateway and router for the network.05:02
jeaah, well that makes more sense then05:06
jaredI'm not going to be able to be available for this month's meeting but I need to start a topic off so I'll be adding an agenda item if people want to discuss it05:19
jeaOk, sure05:22
jeaI will lead it if you want05:22
jaredWe've had notification we're due this cycle for re-approval05:22
jaredSo I wanted to start the discussion on if it's worth preparing an application05:22
jeaAh, I suspected that was coming05:22
jeaI must say I am not sure if it is worth it05:23
jeaAs much as I want us to, we just don't do enough to warrant it05:24
jaredI'm happy for people to step up and have a crack. but as it is I'm on the same opinion you have.05:25
jeaMaybe in a year we will have a few more people doing things, and then it would be easier to reapply05:27
jeaAs an unregistered team, can we still request one of the ubuntu packs?05:28
jaredYes, they're smaller and have less resources though.05:29
jaredhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuAtConferences05:29
jeabecause I think one might be good for the event I will run at uni at the start of next semester05:29
jeaDo you still have the banners, etc?05:29
jaredAh, bear in mind it can take 6 or more weeks to receive the items so might need to start thinking about ordering05:29
jaredYep, I still have banners and posters05:30
jeaCool. I haven't got a date yet, but probably week 2 of semester 205:30
jaredI'd still be putting in the order in the next week or two if you wanted to be sure to receive the goods in time.05:31
jaredUsually they aren't too bad, but sometimes it gets held up in transit05:31
jaredI'm assuming that week 2 is in early July?05:31
jeaOk. I assume we can request them for things other than conferences?05:31
jeaI think it is05:32
jeaI will try to find a calendar05:32
jaredAs long as they're events that are promoting Ubuntu it should be fine, we got it for an open day.05:32
jeaOk. It will be an intro to linux, and I was going to use Ubuntu for it all05:32
jaredSounds good to me :)05:32
jaredPresentation to the course, class, whole uni in general or at an open day?05:33
jeaI am going to link it to a course, and the lecturer of that course recommends debian based distros (ubuntu for most, or raw debian if you are ready for it)05:33
jeaIt will be open to anyone05:33
jeaWeek 2 starts on 29/705:34
jaredCool, well I'd have the order requested by the end of this month then. Gives you an extra week or two05:35
jeaOk. Are you the one to put the request in?05:36
jaredYeah it has to come from the team contact but I can have it sent directly to you.05:37
jeaOk. I will get the details written up and send them through to you05:37
jeaDoes it matter if the date is not 100% certain yet?05:37
jaredI'd just set it as the Saturday prior for now and note that it's subject to change.05:38
jaredAnd to make it easier to show linking if you can make it a loco.u.c event that will help05:38
jeaOk, that sounds fine05:38
jaredIn the past I've essentially just copied the template email listed and put in my own information. So if you ahve enough information to fill that template email in that's when you know you have enough info really05:39
jeaGreat. That makes it easy05:39
jaredAlrighty, agenda item added, email sent.05:43
jaredI really should have a look at some uni work today so I'll be around but not paying muchu attention. Feel free to email any questions through but I think the template (once you scroll across) is pretty easy to see what's needed.05:46
jeaOk. Thanks for your help. Have fun with your study05:50
