herman_ok.. thanks! :)07:56
valoriewhat are you looking for, in particular?07:57
valoriethere is a command some people don't know, which is the searcher here on freenode07:57

herman_my firend said this was a good program for getting help with computer stuff, I'm a python and pygame developer, soo like a channel or something for that...07:58
valorieand viola, you become hermanator07:58
valorieso the search app here is called alis07:58

chirag_d_gr8i want to switch to intel gfx but when I type   echo IGD > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch  the terminal shows me permission denied10:08
chirag_d_gr8how to fix this?10:08
smartboyhwchirag_d_gr8: Use sudo10:08
smartboyhw!sudo10:09
ubottusudo is a command to run command-line programs with superuser privileges ("root") (also see !cli). Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo for more information. For graphical applications see !gksu (GNOME, Xfce), or !kdesudo (KDE). If you're unable to execute commands with sudo see: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/fixsudo10:09
smartboyhw!kdesudo10:09
ubottuIn KDE use « kdesudo <program> »  to run graphical applications with root privileges when you have to. Never just use "sudo"! | See http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/graphicalsudo to find out why.10:09
chirag_d_gr8prefixing kdesudo still shows me the error Permission Denied10:10
chirag_d_gr8sudo does not fix the problem either10:10
smartboyhwchirag_d_gr8: :O10:11
smartboyhwThe error is only "Permission denied"?10:11
chirag_d_gr8yes exactly10:11
smartboyhwchirag_d_gr8: Hmm10:12
smartboyhwI would not normally recommend this, but you should try to root then10:12
smartboyhw!root10:12
ubottuDo not try to guess the root password, that is impossible. Instead, realise the truth... there is no root password. Then you will see that it is 'sudo' that grants you access and not the root password. Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo10:12

theillusivemanI just did an install of Kubuntu 13.04 on an asus g72gx and cannot for the life  of me get it off of dummyy sound11:40
theillusivemanI've spent four days scoouring forums and trying stuff, just reinstalled today and came here for help11:40

theillusivemanyea, altough I'm not using it11:47
theillusivemansome people claim that downgrading the kernel to 3.8.0-17 works, but I dunno how to do that11:48

BluesKajtheillusiveman, ok I have ask , have you checked systemsettings>multimedia>phonon>audio software setup tab and set the output in the drop down ?11:49

BluesKajtheillusiveman, there's one more thing to try , open in the krunner . kdesudo kate /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf , add this line to the bottom , then save the file , options snd-hda-intel index=0 . this makes the kernel module driver stick after loading , then reboot again12:10

theillusivemando I gotta press something at some point in there?12:23
h41how do I tell kubuntu to show me the boot messages during booting?12:25
BluesKajyou can use the shift key right after the bios screen to bring up grub , but changing the time out in /etc/default/grub the running sudo update grub will make it permanent , GRUB_TIMEOUT=10 ...10 is the number secs grub appears12:26
BluesKajtheillusiveman,^12:26

h41BluesKaj, allright to get to the point. i've played around with getting an ntfs drive in fstab. when booting the kernel mesgs pass by then the screen goes black and normaly there would be the login screen after some time. h41OerHeks: thanks OerHerks for your help about the sleep mode but that seems to be a known bug and i can live with hibernating the system (echo disk >> /sys/power/state) my real problem is, i want to see the init messages during boot like in the old times.14:52
h41BluesKaj, smartboyhw, OerHeks: this message describes my wish exactly https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-users/2012-June/261258.html14:55
BluesKajh41, the ntfs drive can be added in fstab , if your run a sudo blkid and copy the UUID to it  like so, this is my external drive entry in fstab , just substitute ntfs for ext4. : UUID=4b38b3eb-e7aa-4369-a645-3736f7edcecc /media/External ext4     defaults       0       1  Make sure you leave the quotation marks out when copying from the blkid output14:58

h41BluesKaj: sorry, i should work on my "asking a question" skills15:24
fractaline:)15:25
BluesKajI can see where this symptom can lead to soem real confusion15:25
BluesKajsome15:25
fractalinei have so man questions i'm not sure where to start15:25
fractalinemany!15:26
BluesKajh41, no need to be sorry , it's good to know there are other issues that have to be considered when the login fails to start x and the desktop15:26
BluesKajfractaline, so what's your most important question :) ?15:59
fractalinegood question   ;)16:00
BluesKajhehe16:00
BluesKajthen just pick one16:01
fractalinethere are so many applications for everything,  now i've installed kubuntu over ubuntu i have a mix up of default apps16:02
fractalinei'm wondering if i should / could purge some stuff?16:03
BluesKajso what are your most used application types16:03
BluesKajthat are duplicated16:04
BluesKajwell you could do purekde , but Idon't know if it's been setup for 13.04 yet16:05
fractalineweb browser, file browser ,bittorrent16:05
BluesKaja few gtk apps that browsers use are required , especially for firefox16:06
HusarWhat typo of encryption is use to encrypt home dir? (option in installation process)16:06
Husartype*16:06
fractalinethe thing is i want to use / learn new things16:06
BluesKajwell you could purge nautlius , some of the media players , install ktorrent16:08
BluesKajif it isn't already installed16:08
fractalineyeah banshee has got to go16:08
fractalineseems to be there16:09
BluesKajVLC is desktop agnostic so it runs and looks the same on most linux OSs16:09
BluesKajand dektops16:09
fractalineit's what i've always used16:10
* BluesKaj nods16:10
fractalinei guess i'm just exploring16:10
fractalineno issues to solve just a lot of curiosity16:11
fractalineso i've got muon update manager and software updater, yesterday muon said i did not have proper authentication but did not give the option to input password so i used software updater16:19
BluesKajfractaline, you could run ,sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop16:22
fractalinei was considering that16:22
fractalineno harm in it right?16:22
fractalineif i really missed something i could reinstall16:23
fractalinean app that is16:23
fractalineBluesKaj, would you recommend it?16:26
BluesKajyes16:26
BluesKajyou already have kubuntu-desktop installed , right ?16:26

BluesKajI'd say it is now16:29
BluesKajsynaptic was becoming slow to load and run so i finally gave it up16:30

BluesKaj!Krfb | Jeruvy18:19
JeruvySo using krfb how does one automate remote login?18:19
Jeruvy(ie: I don't want to send permission requests)18:20
Jeruvyremoving it seemed out of the question.  Wanted to do a kde-full removal.18:20
BluesKajJeruvy, don't know much about it , just that it's described as http://pastebin.com/GryrwVHv18:22
JeruvyAnd for some reason the machine is blocking my vnc requests to 5900.  I do not know why.18:23
BluesKajKrfb isn't installed by default here18:25
JeruvyI'm curious how you did that.18:28
BluesKajIlooked up the description of Kfrb in muon and copied pasted the text to www.pastebin.com then copied the resulting URL after submitting the text18:29
BluesKajand pasted the url here, which automtically creates a link to that page18:31
BluesKaj!pastebin18:31

palassoI'm asking because I'm trying to figure out which versions of kernel you had in each case21:31
juniormendoncacan u see any light?21:31
palassoYou said you're using eth right? So no proprietary driver right?21:31
juniormendoncaso i tell u that network ok using windows too21:32
juniormendoncaman. I can't confirm that21:32
palassoIs it ethernet?21:32
juniormendoncaethernet21:33
juniormendoncacan't confirm about proprietary driver21:33
palassocould you find from menu the "additional drivers" program?21:33
palassoIf you use any proprietary driver it should list it there21:34
juniormendoncatrying to launch app21:35
palassoKubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.2 64-bit seems to have the problem and Linux Mint 14 with kernel 3.5 32-bit seems to work ok. I would try out a more recent version of Kubuntu in case it'd change sth.21:35
palassoDoes this disconnection happen often?21:35
juniormendoncafrequently21:36
juniormendoncacuriously right now we got no problem21:36
juniormendoncaupgrading OS21:36
juniormendoncamaybe fixed it ...21:36
palassoI'd try to test it with a liveCD on Kubuntu 12.10 or even 13.04 in case it'd happen21:37
juniormendoncai got liveCD and same situation21:37
juniormendonca12.0421:37
palassowith 12.04?21:37
palassoYeah21:37
palassoSo it's reproducible and it's on unchanged liveCD21:37
palassoMaybe it's a problem on the specific release21:38
palassoHow abt trying out a liveCD with 13.04 or 12.1021:38
palassoSo if my speculation is correct 12.10 32-bit should behave like Linux Mint21:39
juniormendoncaso... no problem about that... but it really seems to be fixed right now21:39
juniormendoncawith OS updating21:39
juniormendoncaupgrading21:39
palassoI hope it's fixed :)21:39
juniormendoncaso palasso where r u from?21:40
palassoThough you're still using the old kernel... You need to restart after the distro upgrade for the new kernel to load21:40
juniormendoncahum.21:40
palassoBut it might not be an issue on the kernel... and it might be fixed anyways21:40
juniormendoncaso I'm not using the updated version yet?21:40
juniormendoncaok i got it21:41
palassoYou're not using the kernel yet. The other parts are getting loaded from disk as they're needed so they're the updated ones mostly21:41
palassoSo now you're on 13.04 64-bit?21:41
juniormendoncahow can i see?21:42
juniormendoncahow can i see some "My Computer properties"?21:43
palassoopen a terminal and type: lsb_release -a21:43
palassoI think there is a module somewhere on KDE system settings as well just don't remember right now where...21:44
juniormendonca12.04.2 LTS21:44
juniormendoncaprecise21:44
palassoOk so that was a regular update...21:45
juniormendoncaupgrading 12.04 to 13.04 with no formatting is no recommended?21:45
juniormendoncaor possible21:45
juniormendonca?21:45
palassoIt is possible. You can do it if you want. I just wouldn't recommend it yet. I'd firstly try out the liveCD solution21:46
juniormendoncajust for upgrading and no for fixing that issue21:46
palasso12.04 is an LTS release. 13.04 is standard release (support for 9 months only) you might want to stay on LTS. If it persists on LTS then maybe you'd have a better experience on a more recent release if no other solution is found21:47
palassoif you open up muon package manager there is a button that does that ;)21:47
juniormendoncai did it21:49
palassoYou may also go from muon's menu to "Software Sources" and change the setting which will notify you every time (every 6 months) a new kubuntu release is available21:49
palassoYou can select there if you want to be notified for newer LTS-only releases (which happen every 2 years next being 14.04), all releases or not getting a notification about newer releases21:50
palassojuniormendonca, after the update finishes do a restart and then type in terminal lsb_release -a to see the release21:51
palassook I'm out see you tomorrow21:51
juniormendoncapalasso: tks a lot!21:51
