Linusnewbwhy not I had installed via muon package manager before?00:38
muscaLinusnewb: autoremove is used to remove packages that were automatically installed to satisfy dependencies for other packages and are now no longer needed.00:39

LegitsI'm having issues with my initramfs.00:43
LegitsI just installed Kubuntu over a LUKS-encrypted LVM partition on a GPT table.00:45
LegitsI managed to reinstall lvm2 and cryptsetup from a live CD, but the system still doesn't know how to boot everything up.00:46
muscaare you following a howto?00:47
LegitsI used a guide to reinstall the two packages.00:48
LegitsI didn't need a guide to set up LUKS or LVM or to install.00:48
LegitsI just installed Arch on my main box using the same setup. Everything works fine on the Arch box, but Ubuntu's initramfs files are quite a bit different.00:49
=== cds is now known as thechris
LegitsWith Arch, you can add or remove hooks easily by just editing /etc/mkinitcpio.conf. I can't figure out how to do the same with Ubuntu. When I reinstalled lvm2, nothing appeared to change. When I reinstalled cryptsetup, I could get to the Kubuntu splash screen before it would drop down to an initramfs terminal.00:51
LegitsI realized that I needed to indicate GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX= in /etc/default/grub. It didn't fix the problem with initramfs. I'm not sure what else to do.01:14

fractalinehey BluesKaj ,  still pondering a clean install of 13.04 64bit.   i can't tell how much ubuntu i have leftover that i don't need/want11:33
fractalinei did remove ubuntu desktop but i still seem to have a bunch of gtk stuff that doesn't seem needed11:34
seeleanyone have about 30 minutes for an interview about your kde notifications? it will earn a $5 donation to the kde e.v. for your participation.11:43
=== Se7en is now known as Guest29692
BluesKajfractaline, there is going to be some gtk libs needed for certain apps , but the pure kde command at http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purekubuntu , should be written for 13.04 soon.11:46
fractalineyeah, i don't mind the gtk stuff it's just that i'm not sure what is leftovers and what is part of kubuntu11:51
michael__im not sure if i use kde notifications11:53
michael__do you mean when it tells you you have updates, or an app crashed11:53
BluesKajfractaline, once that purekde command is available , you can run it , but don't be concerned about a few gtk libs as long as kubuntu is running well11:54
BluesKajthey're stlll part of the same ubuntu core/kernel11:55
fractalinei'm not ...  not really having any issues.11:55

fractalineBluesKaj, another thing i've noticed is some widget/panel misbehavior, e.g. autohide not working , widgets not resizing/ moving properly...12:13
fractalinelittle stuff12:13
BluesKajit's beyond my experience ...haven't used cairo dock in yrs12:13
fractalineBluesKaj, the truth is i was expecting cairo to act up ...12:17
fractalinelol12:17
BluesKajthe plasma panel provides all the launchers, taskbar ,trays etc that i need12:18
fractalineit's great... super custom!12:19
fractalinealthough the misbehavior i mentioned before was with the plasma setup12:20
fractalinei don't mind ,  just obsevations...12:20
fractalineobservations12:21
BluesKajhmm, odd because I'm testing 13.10 atm ,and the panel is very stable12:21
BluesKajso far12:22
fractalineis that available?12:22
fractalinebeta?12:22
BluesKajnot even alpha yet afaik , I just update/upgrade/dist-upgrade everyday ...haven't looked at the release schedule in a while12:23

fractalinewow, ok .   everyday huh?12:24
fractalinecool12:24
BluesKajhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/SaucySalamander/ReleaseSchedule12:27
BluesKajwife plays games not available on linux , otherwise I could probly talk her into kubuntu due to it's security12:28
BluesKajbut WE7 is the best MS OS so far and it seems to be pretty stable , like XP was/is12:29
BluesKajW712:30
fractalineyeah we put w8 on and it is a joke12:30
fractaline7 was at least stable12:31
fractalinebut yuck12:31
BluesKajI have W7 on a separate HDD on this pc , with some KDE apps so I can run konversation etc .. gotta keep up with the 90% :)12:32
BluesKajwell at least I have vpn working on windows ...seems like steep learning curve on linux12:34
fractalinei know nothing about networks/networking12:35
BluesKajin some ways it's very configurable , but the remote tunneling like vpn etc can get real confuding real fast with all the different protocols that have absolutely not understandable manuals available ...like I said yesterday the mans availabele in the terminal are written by geeks who describe a pencil as awriting tool for ppl without computers.12:39
BluesKajconfudidlng...a new word :)12:41
fractaline:D12:56
BluesKajfractaline, I have a stable 13.04 partition in case this OS crashes and becomes unusable12:59
fractalinenice13:01
BluesKajforgot to mention that ...testing an OS requires a fallback OS13:01
fractalinei have a partition that has mint 13 atm as well as one for winblows.  i was thinking of dedicating the mint one to /home...13:02
fractalinei keep a bootable usb of some description around ... just  in case13:03
fractalineit's about 70gig13:04
BluesKajmint is a nice stable OS for those who need stability and it works well13:05
BluesKajhaving a /home partition has it's advantages13:06
fractalineit was pretty good.   i had a heap of issues with mint that i later attributed to compiz and or cairo.13:07
fractalinei should boot into it again...13:08
BluesKajreinstalling an OS to / speeds up the installation a lot when you already have a /home already setup13:08
fractalinei have 3 kids and not always much time to play with os's13:08
* BluesKaj is repeating himself again ...another sign of ageing :P13:09
fractalinebut i do like  to tinker13:09
fractalinelearning heaps from all this13:09
BluesKajmy kids are grown and gone ..we're empty nesters, and retired13:10
* fractaline is jealous13:10
fractalinekidding,  i love my kid time13:10
fractalineour youngest is 5,  we have a ways to go  :)13:11
BluesKajfractaline, a couple of commands that you may want to run periodaically after update/upgradeand dist-upgrade is sudo apt-get autoremove and autoclean , that keeps your OS and system from bloating up13:20
BluesKajok , gotta do some checking , bbl13:24

ct529lordievader: good afternoon15:56
lordievaderHey ct529, how are you?15:57
ct529testing the new 13.04 ....15:57
silv3r_m00nwhen i start my system everyday, the programs that were left open last day open back, is this called hibernation ?15:57
ct529and you ?15:57
lordievadersilv3r_m00n: It is probably 'session restore', see System Settings -> Startup and Shutdown -> Session Management15:59
lordievaderct529: I'm doing good :)15:59
lordievaderTesting 13.10 ;)15:59
silv3r_m00nlordievader: then what is hibernation ?15:59
LegitsSilver, either you're going into hibernation mode (as opposed to shutting down), or you need to change your session settings.15:59
lordievadersilv3r_m00n: Hibernation saves the state of the pc to disk, and reload that state on restore.16:00
silv3r_m00nmeans its more than session restore16:00
LegitsGo to System Settings > Startup and Shutdown > Session Management.16:00
LegitsMake sure you have the option to start with an empty session selected.16:01
silv3r_m00nno no, its good to get back all apps without effort16:01
silv3r_m00ni saw it, restore session is checked atm16:01
LegitsI like the middle option. You can choose whether or not you want it to restore your previous session. You have to remember to save it before you log out though.16:02
LegitsOr you can just select the new session option at login.16:02
lordievadersilv3r_m00n: Yes hibernation is more that session restore. Session restore simply opens the programs that were open when you powered down the machine. Restore from hibernate restores the entire session.16:03
silv3r_m00ni selected restore previous session16:03
silv3r_m00ncant see the hibernate option in kde16:03
LegitsThen if you ever want a new session without changing that setting, there should be an option on the login screen.16:03
silv3r_m00nhmm16:04
LegitsI don't know about hibernation. I never use it. There might be a keyboard shortcut.16:04
lordievaderFor hibernation to work you need a swap partition.16:06
ct529lordievader: 13:10 already?16:06
lordievaderct529: :)16:07
LegitsI'm still having issues with my initramfs. Anyone know about that?16:10
lordievaderLegits: What kind of error are you seeing?16:11
LegitsWell, I just installed over a LUKS/LVM/GPT.16:11
LegitsI can't boot up at all. I get to right before the login screen, and then it gives up.16:12
lordievaderLegits: If you can get to X I don't think it is initramfs, more something like init.16:12
LegitsI went back into the live CD and reinstalled lvm2 and cryptsetup onto the LVM partition. update-initramfs doesn't do anything.16:12
LegitsYou can see the exact message I get here: http://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread.php?62859-Broken-initramfs16:13
lordievaderLegits: I'm sorry I don't know enough about LVM to help you :(16:14
LegitsI just installed Arch over the same setup, and I had to add the hooks "lvm" and "encrypt" to initramfs in order to get it to boot the encrypted partition.16:16
LegitsI can't figure out how to do the same thing in K/ubuntu.16:16

=== rosco_y is now known as rosco_away
lordievaderskreech_: No real need for swap if you have 32 GB of ram, unless you really need to hibernate.17:38
=== rosco_away is now known as rosco_y
yofellordievader: for hibernate you usually only need as much swap as much RAM is currently in use, and there was at least one swap implementation that supported compression.17:50
yofelas for the 1.5x, that's from the days when you always had something in swap. Today it really depends on the system (my notebook has 8G RAM and 2G swap, my server has 4G RAM and 24G swap)17:51
yofelskreech_: ^17:52
skreech_yofel: What's the server run?17:53
yofelskreech_: what's it doing? Many things, the swap is mostly to catch run-away processes during package builds as it serves as a buildd and to allow for over-provisioned tmpfs mounts.17:54
skreech_yofel: whats your peak usage18:01
=== rdieter_ is now known as rdieter
yofelskreech_: ~18G. Average is ~2G18:06
skreech_yeah thinking of upping my swap to 8G18:07
yofelit was originally 12G which is the size of the swap partition. I added a 12G swapfile later18:08
BluesKaji haven't seen my 5G swap in use yet18:10
yofelas I said, it depends on the use case. Also, if you don't have a SSD but a fast CPU, zram-config might be worth a try too18:11
