=== TheLordOfTime is now known as LordOfTime|EC2 [04:33] I updated from a fine working 12.04 LTS to 12.10 on an old computer and now I can only boot in recovery mode, startx fails. If I try to boot normally I end up with a screen that changes between black, purple and light purple. What can I do to get the GUI back ? [04:34] You can try and see if nomodeset helps. [04:34] !nomodeset [04:34] A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter [04:37] from a command prompt, how would I check nomodeset ? [04:38] alex57: you would do it from boot, as the guide suggests.. from grub [04:41] now the tricky part is how to get to the grub menu... [04:43] alex57: tap shift at boot, and you should be able to enter it there [04:43] i usually try it from a live CD, but im a "look before you leap" kind of guy.. and i *never* do distibution upgrades, except to test the path [04:44] i can briefly see some grub stuff but it soon changes into the list of bootable OSes on the system [04:46] alex57: you can manually edit that if needed via a live CD [04:46] alex57: you should be albe to tap shift, and see the grub menu, that allows you to follow above.. [04:46] okay I just noticed the 'c' option in the list of OSes, and now I am at the grub prompt [04:50] the 'e' option lets me edit an entry. SO shall I add nomodeset ? [04:50] alex57: i would read above, and enter the options exactly as stated.. i do it via live CD, so i dont know them off the top of my head, though, if you need me to look at the link Unit193 gave you, i can [04:52] e is it, find "nosplash" and it should go around there. Ctrl+x boots, IIRC. [04:55] I will try from a live CD as well... [05:02] holstein: if I do it from a live CD the setting would apply only to the liveCD session, right ? [05:12] I edited the grub entry for Ubuntu 12.10, inserted a new line with just 'nomodeset' rebooted, but the GUI wouldn't start up. Upon rebooting again, the line that I added was missing... [05:37] Yes, you are editing the boot options one time, if you reboot rather than boot from there, nogo. [05:47] If that's the case, adding nomodeset didn't seem to help. In the meantime I located my grub configuration file, according to http://www.liberiangeek.net/2012/07/how-to-find-where-grub-is-installed-in-ubuntu/ and added nomodeset after quiet, however I still have the same problem: after rebooting and seeing briefly a Lubuntu 12.10 light blue screen, it starts cycling a black screen, then purple, then light purple, forever... [06:07] How can I check if any driver is missing ? [07:54] I am still unable to boot into a desktop manager [11:46] I'm having problems with the 13.04 lubuntu on two of my machines. I've installed it from Live-USB and it all goes fine, I'm in my shell, feeling comfortable, aptgetting emacs but it stops with the message that I have unmet dependencies. [11:47] Normally, I tried apt-get install -f, doesn't work. [11:47] Then I tried many weird solutions that I stumbled on the web, nothing helped at all. [11:47] Is anyone having similar problems? === AlanChicken is now known as AlanBell [15:44] hi [15:54] Anyone know where 13.04 keeps the lightdm theme XML? 12.10, I believe, was in /usr/share/lightdm-gtk-greeter/greeter.ui but 13.04 doesn't seem to have that [18:11] malaphus: That file doesn't exist in lubuntu-artwork-13.04 for lightdm, only lxdm. lightdm-gtk-greeter also doesn't have it, and locate didn't find anything with lightdm or greeter in the name other than the LXDM one. [19:17] Hi I am not able to resize the launcher icon size after upgrading my system from 12.04 LTS to 12.10. Any one plz let me know how to do? I would like to know also that, What is the most important things I have to do after upgrading , as initially I was not able to get the unity desktop, only mouse pointer it shows. but after I install unity, it shows the desktop icon. [19:19] ajnr: Please don't cross post, and this isn't really the channel for Unity. [22:09] Unit193: yeah, i discovered the same, trying to figure out how to re-theme lightdm on 13.04 heh [22:10] can disable the language selector via the conf file in etc, id like to do some more advanced customizations though [22:13] theme-name=Name > /usr/share/themes/Name/gtk-3.0/apps/lightdm-gtk-greeter.css [22:58] What package do I need so that lxappearance will have a Window Border tab? [22:59] Never mind. Found it (lxappearance-obconf). [23:00] Yep, Openbox. :D [23:34] How do I add Shutdown, Reboot, Suspend, and Hibernate to the lubuntu-logout application? [23:42] any lubuntu experts out there? === micahg_ is now known as micahg [23:56] Never mind. Apparently installing policykit-1 fixes it.
