karmiclycheeHey so, my Xubuntu upgrade appears to have stalled01:05
karmiclycheeI'm a bit worried that my OS is nuked.01:05
karmiclycheewoot, nm, it moved01:08
Unit193\o/01:08
karmiclycheedamnit, the log is saying a bunch of "you have held broken packages"01:09
Quix86I undocked and x barfed. How do I restart it in tty?02:26

[0gb_us]I'm trying to set up a VNC server, but not having much luck. What server software would you recommend, and how do you set it up?04:21
JdgtrnubIs anyone there?04:47
[0gb_us]Nope. No one.04:48
Unit193[0gb_us]: x11vnc is what I use, and LAN only. (Or, over SSH.)04:48
JdgtrnubSo is burning the iso into a disk the only way to install xubuntu? If I am currently running on Ubuntu04:48
[0gb_us]Hmm. x11vnc (from what I've read) only allows access to sessions that are already running. Is that not true?04:49
[0gb_us]sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop04:49
Unit193!purexubuntu | Should technically work.04:49
ubottuShould technically work.: If you want to remove all !KDE and !Gnome packages and have a default !Xubuntu system follow the instructions here « http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce »04:49
Unit193[0gb_us]: I can login to lightdm, I'm pretty sure.  But are you looking to start a new session for the VNC client?  tightvncserver I think does that, if I have the right name.04:50
[0gb_us]I tried logging in, maybe I didn't have it set up right ..... Okay, I'll try tightvncserver next. Thanks!04:51
Unit193http://paste.openstack.org/show/I6sF3QJVPFwHTSQxuA81 may not be the best, but I have that for an upstart job.04:53
[0gb_us]Okay, I'll remove tightvncserver for x11vnc and try that.04:57
[0gb_us]Hmm. The info says it only woks on boxes with actual monitors. That'll work on my one computer, but not my server.04:59
=== H264 is now known as WalterN
[0gb_us]Wow, that was lame. I used sudo reboot over shh to restart the computer that's only a foot away ...05:04
JdgtrnubI have installed xubuntu using 'sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop' how to I start up the OS?05:04
[0gb_us]Start it as normal, then choose Xubuntu Session from the display manager, instead of Ubuntu Session.05:05
[0gb_us]Unit193, I added your script at /etc/init.d/vncserver.0gb.us and rebooted, but I can't connect with a VNC client. Is that the wrong place to put it?05:06
Unit193/etc/init/x11vnc.conf is mine.05:07
Unit193Note, X has to be already running.05:07
[0gb_us]So in init, not init.d then?05:09
[0gb_us]X appears to be running, I see the lightdm on that computer's monitor.05:10
jdgtrnubI have started it up like normal, but yet I'm still in ubuntu, how do I choose xubuntu?05:10
[0gb_us]Are you logged in? Log out.05:11
jdgtrnubI logged out and restarted the computer.05:11
[0gb_us]Then click the Ubuntu logo by your name.05:11
jdgtrnub_There we go, I got in xubuntu. How do I get rid of all the others? And including my windows install?05:12
[0gb_us]Getting rid of Windows would require deleting the Windows partition and reconfiguring GRUB.05:14
jdgtrnub_I got rid of the partition but how to I reconfigure GRUB?05:14
jdgtrnub_Or is there a guide I can look at?05:14
[0gb_us]It would be easier to install from scratch.05:14
jdgtrnub_I don't have a cd burner :/05:15
[0gb_us]I don't know where a guide is, but I'm sure there is one.05:15
jdgtrnub_Er, dvd burner.05:15
[0gb_us]USB?05:15
jdgtrnub_I do have a USB yes, but it's only 4GB05:19
jdgtrnub_I guess the iso is only 800MB how install it from USB?05:20
[0gb_us]If it's empty, you can make a live USB to install from.05:20
[0gb_us]There is a Live USB creator in Ubuntu I think. I don't know where.05:20
flux242just dd the image onto the usb stick05:21
[0gb_us]Unit193, I moved the file to /etc/init, with no effect.05:21
Unit193[0gb_us]: Look at the log.05:21
jdgtrnub_What do you mean by dd05:22
[0gb_us]Where do you find this log?05:22
[0gb_us]I imagine dd is a command. run "dd --help".05:23
jdgtrnub_What should I dd an ISO as?05:27
cfhowlettjdgtrnub_, don't understand ... you mean how do you boot it?05:28
[0gb_us]cfhowlett, he means how do you put it on the USB.05:28
[0gb_us]Be warned, it will WIPE the data on the USB. I think.05:28
jdgtrnub_Well apparently dd is a command to write files to devices, but I can change the format. What should I dd an ISO as onto the USB?05:29
cfhowlettjdgtrnub_, indeed, your USB will be wiped completely.05:29
jdgtrnub_That's okay05:29
cfhowlettjdgtrnub_, you're using dd to make a bootable USB?  Why not use the startup disk creator or unetbootin?05:29
jdgtrnub_Because I don't have a DVD rom to burn it to :/05:30
jdgtrnub_And CD is slightly too small05:30
cfhowlettjdgtrnub_, both will create a boot USB ... not just cd/dvd05:30
jdgtrnub_Oh, well why didn't you say that in the first place, how do I get the startup disk creater?05:31

SixtyFoldcfhowlett - thank you07:12
SixtyFoldi need a light weight OS with the ability to snap windows basically07:13
cfhowlettSixtyFold, compiz* is available but not installed.  as far as pretty effects like snapping, I THINK lxde might be easier to configure in that manner.07:13
koegsSixtyFold: compiz is not needed for snapping and tiling, xfce does that on its own07:14

cfhowlettSixtyFold, it does snap but it's not compiz as that isn't installed in 12.0407:15
SixtyFoldi dont want compiz or anything extra graphically to be honest07:15
SixtyFoldi just want my windows to snap to half the screen size so theyre symmetrical07:15
knomei don't think snapping to half the screen is possible with the xfce core07:17
Sysiit's built to xfwm, you just need to disable dragging window to next workspace07:18

GolfwangHi, does anyone know if it is possible to install xubuntu on a RAID5 config?11:30
cfhowlettGolfwang, of course.  don't ask me how though11:31

GolfwangHey, I'm trying to install Xubuntu, and I'm getting an error after selecting my partition: 'The creation of swap space in partition #1 of Serial ATA RAID (insert swap space partition) (Partition #3) failed.'12:03
GolfwangI'm installing it on a RAID5 config.12:03
koegsGolfwang: what kind of RAID5 is it? some external (PCI/Express) hardware raid controller, onboard fake-raid controller or mdadm software raid?12:14
GolfwangIt's a hardware raid controller, configured in BIOS.12:16
koegsso, a fake-raid :)12:17

koegseither use a real hardware raid controller (costs a lot) or use mdadm for raid12:19
koegsGolfwang: is windows installed on the same raid?12:20
Golfwangyeah12:21
koegsok, then forget option2/mdadm12:21
GolfwangOh, lol.12:21

koegsyeah, i am not an expert on that dmraid/fake-raid stuff, i dont want to one in the future :)12:23

cfhowlett!mini|pebe,14:00
ubottupebe,: The Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want.  The installer is text based (rather than graphical as used on the Desktop DVD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD14:00

Quix86shouldn't it be something removed from the xubuntu distro?22:46
Unit193Quix86: It's up to you, but it isn't really popcon (there's that for Ubuntu too.), not exactly related to unity, just unity makes extensive use of it.  You can remove it if you wish, but if you remove all zeitgeist programs, you'll lose catfish too.22:52
