Guest29286hello05:17
Guest29286anyone here ?05:17
Guest29286i had a question about the root commands05:18
holstein!ask | Guest2928605:20
ubot93Guest29286: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience05:20
holstein!root05:20
ubot93Do not try to guess the root password, that is impossible. Instead, realise the truth... there is no root password. Then you will see that it is 'sudo' that grants you access and not the root password. Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo05:20
Guest29286sorry...brb dog on me and got my glasses dirty05:22
Guest29286she got both lens05:22

holstein!root | Guest2928605:26
ubot93Guest29286: Do not try to guess the root password, that is impossible. Instead, realise the truth... there is no root password. Then you will see that it is 'sudo' that grants you access and not the root password. Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo05:26
holsteinGuest29286: there is no traditional root account05:26
bodhi_zazenwell, the root account exists, it is just locked05:27
holsteinGuest29286: if you want a root terminal, you can use "sudo -i" or read up on sudo05:27
Guest29286i guess that ihave been away from linux05:27
holstein!sudo05:27
ubot93sudo is a command to run command-line programs with superuser privileges ("root") (also see !cli). Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo for more information. For graphical applications see !gksu (GNOME, Xfce), or !kdesudo (KDE). If you're unable to execute commands with sudo see: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/fixsudo05:27
holsteinyou can undo the lock, but i would leave it as-is05:27
Guest29286okay05:28
Guest29286thats alot for the help ...yes red hat is what i used in the 90'S05:28
AsharasHey, I have a little question05:38
AsharasI installed xfce and its dependencies on my server, just to give a try to X forwarding05:39
Asharasnow I'm trying to uninstalling it but many packages remain with xorg or xfce in their name05:40
Asharascould someone help me?05:40
Unit193So remove them as well if you wish?05:40
Asharasone by one? is there any other way?05:41
Asharas!dpkg05:41
ubot93dpkg is the Debian package maintenance system, which together with apt forms the basic Ubuntu package management toolkit.05:41
Unit193sudo apt-get purge xfce* xorg* may remove too much, though.05:41
AsharasI thought the help text was longer :p05:41
Unit193!apt05:42
ubot93APT is the Advanced Package Tool, which together with dpkg forms the basic Ubuntu package management toolkit. Short apt-get manual: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AptGetHowto - Also see !Synaptic (Gnome), !Muon (KDE) or !Apper (KDE)05:42
Asharasyeah, would be dangerous05:42
Unit193It'd ask you first at least.05:42
AsharasI think I'll prefer the manual way, I still don't have any backup configured05:43
Asharas!rc05:43
Asharasah, nothing05:43
Asharashum05:45
AsharasI was reading my dpkg -l05:45
Unit193dpkg -l | grep -e xfce -e xorg05:45
Asharasmany packages are noted rc05:45
AsharasI'm thinking about a command to purge all packages in this state05:46
Asharaswhere the fuck are my lessons? *opening all books on desk*05:47
Unit193sudo dpkg --purge $(COLUMNS=200 dpkg -l|grep ^rc|awk '{print $2}')05:47
Unit193Asharas: Please keep it family friendly.05:47
Asharassry05:47
Unit193But, that'll do it.05:48
Asharasfirst I'm trying to decode it :p05:48
Asharasbut thx!05:48
Unit193Sure.05:48
Asharas$ means it's an environment variable, isn't it?05:49
Unit193$(run this first) ${var}   excpet for the awk statement.05:50
Asharasoh ^05:50
Unit193Output of that is text, just like echo `whoami`05:50
Unit193(Which is pointless)05:50
Asharashum, awk? let me RTFM (can I use RTFM here?)05:50
Unit193pattern scanning and processing language05:51
Unit193echo bob bobertson | awk '{print $2}'05:52
Asharasawk '{print $2}' prints second column, understood05:53
Asharashum, and why the COLUMNS=200?05:53
Unit193As an example, look at COLUMNS=200 dpkg -l   vs   COLUMNS=600 dpkg -l05:54
Unit193(You want to override what the shell tells it, so it doesn't cut off a name.)05:54
Asharasdoesn't change anything for me :-/05:55
AsharasI'm using putty btw05:55
* Unit193 blames PuTTY, just because he can. :P05:55
Asharas:-D05:55
Unit193holstein: You still around?  I may croak here soon.05:56
Asharastoo noob on linux to use only this OS05:56
Asharasand too much gamer05:56
Unit193Steam works on it now too.  But, got you all fixed up?05:56
Asharasbrb, rebooting the server05:57
Asharassteam yeah, but not all my games05:57
AsharasI have 199 games on steam >_<05:57
Unit193Alrighty, I may not be here (even if my nick is.)05:58
Asharasrebooting the server, lauching your command and hoping you didn't made any mistake :-p05:58
Asharasokay, see ya05:58

ScottyKGreetings! My cat sat down on my laptop, and in the process somehow logged the computer out, and now it's at a command line prompt wanting to log in. How do I get the GUI back without rebooting? thanks!16:25

iodaddiocan someone help me with setting up proxy...I don't think I am understanding the terminology.  I am using ubuntu desktop 12, squid 3 with http/https transparent, and dansguardian.  So my confusion is with who is the parent of who.  If squid is transparent, it doesn't seem to make sense to NAT to dansguardian especially since I want squid to mitm the http/https connections...  How does this relationship work...parents, et21:37
iodaddioI guess that is technically proxies.  I want to add havp and privoxy eventually too :/21:38
iodaddioI think I want client->transparent squid mitm http/s->dansguardian->privoxy->havp->internet21:40
iodaddiotypo: make that ubuntu 13.0421:42
iodaddiois there a good reading resource?  Everything I find is from like 2008 and many of the directives no longer work :(21:43
Unit193Well, I've not done a ton of work with proxies, just some polipo, but you may want to look in #ubuntu-server or https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/21:44
iodaddioI feel fairly comfortable in Ubuntu Desktop, but server scares me.  Not having a gui for anything....no thanks.  I am just concerned dad who just went through first kid google image search of boobs.  Just trying to make things a little safer for the little ones.21:50
iodaddiofound these projects could help...I have no idea how they work or how they work together....yet21:50
Unit193Oh sure, was just thinking the channel should know pretty well since what you want is server related, even if you install on a desktop.  Otherwise, I think the community  edition "Ubuntu Christian Edition" uses dansguardian, you could maybe look at that and see how they pull it together.21:52
iodaddioI am running this local...no server involved21:56
iodaddioLOL21:57
iodaddioguess I could run a server in a local VM that starts at boot....21:59
