RaphaelAraujoAnybody there having problems to compress to .rar using Ark? I'm trying to compress some files as .rar through the Dolphin compression menu and I can compress in .zip, .tar.gz, but not in .rar. When I try to compress in .rar the notification progress goes on and on and never ends, and if I stop it, ark continues to run on the background.03:40
RaphaelAraujoAnybody with the same kubuntu as me could at least check to see if I'm the only one with this problem? I'm using Kubuntu 13.0403:51

bga_xyzzyI upgraded to kubuntu 13.04 and kde doesn't work in either plasma or the other workspace, and unity hides the mouse pointer unless it's over an application.  what are my options, reinstall 13.04?05:31
bga_xyzzyAnd, if I reinstall 13.04, can I install it without losing my home directories?05:32
valoriebga_xyzzy: how did you install it ?05:34
bga_xyzzyIt popped up a window saying kubuntu 13.04 was available, and I clicked on the ok button05:35
valorieah05:36
valorieby "kde doesn't work" what do you mean?05:36
bga_xyzzyWell, no window manager would start up when the display manager was dmlight, so I installed kdm, and when kde starts, it plays the startup sound and displays some stuff in a menu on the top of the screen, but the mouse only is visible in the top left corner and I can't select anything05:39
bga_xyzzyIt doesn't display any of my old KDE layout either05:39
valoriethat does sound very messed up, indeed05:39
bga_xyzzyyes, and while googling, I've seen several comments that updating is prone to issues05:40
valorieif you do want to do a clean install, it's best to back up your ~/home first05:40
valoriepersonally, I would do a complete backup, and then just use the whole drive05:41
bga_xyzzyI sort of figured that.05:41
valoriesimplest and fastest05:41
bga_xyzzyactually just the partition, it's dual boot with win805:41
valorieI had good luck with upgrading, and almost always have had good luck with05:41
valorieok05:42
bga_xyzzyI must say I've never had this sort of problem when upgrading freebsd05:42
valorieeasier than manual, at least for me05:42

BluesKajovidiu-florin, for some reason the monitor capability isn't being transmitted to the video card using EDID ...maybe the vga connection might give you more resolution options . Could be one or some of the pins on the dvi card isn't connecting properly13:03

ovidiu-florin_how do you know that?14:44
=== Authority_ is now known as Authority
ovidiu-florin_to me it looks like this last EDID gives more information than any of the past.14:50
ovidiu-florin_On the installed Kubuntu, on vga on PCI, I got the same EDID as on the LiveCD on the onBoard VGA14:50
BluesKajvpn connection took me down , for some reason14:51
ovidiu-florinBluesKaj: it works now14:56
ovidiu-florinI don't understand this creature14:56
ovidiu-florinI've rebooted into the installed OS, using the PCI board, connected only on DVI14:56
ovidiu-florinand it work's now14:56
ovidiu-florinand it's using the nvidia 319 driver14:57
BluesKajso it probly was the driver that was at fault then , ovidiu-florin ,but sometimes these things are hard to tracj=k down when there are unrelated errors14:58
ovidiu-florinBluesKaj: KDE keeps crashing14:59
BluesKajovidiu-florin, add the raring backports ppa to your sources.list15:00
BluesKajbut run an update then dist-upgrade first15:00
BluesKajovidiu-florin, sudo apt-add-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports15:02

genii!nomodeset20:52
ubottuA common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter20:52

ubottunetsplit is when two IRC servers of the same network (like freenode) disconnect from each other, so users on one server stop seeing users on the other. If this is happening now, just relax and enjoy the show. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netsplit22:39
