* redtape|renegade slaps on ample amounts & splatterings of sticky sun factor 50. http://open.spotify.com/track/4ptSL1o2pRgNvrC4wsN1Pl08:06
christelthey don't no -- i think a lot of companies/organisations are loathe to do so considering the recent attacks mind08:06
christelthe reason our existing sponsors like OSUOSL and several other well-connected universities have had to pull out is because the sustained attacks recently has been of such magnitude that it is costing them too much money08:07
redtape|renegadeWhy ?   , How much would you say 23Gb's of damage would cost ?08:08
diploThat really sucks, can't see why someone would ddos Freenode, understand some other networks being a bit dodgey etc08:08
christelthe hosting companies that have had to pull out have had to do so for purely financial reasons as the domino effect on their paying customers means that they end up paying out for SLA violations, etc.08:08
christeldiplo: i suspect mainly because "they can"08:08
christelsadly we have grown to become the largest irc network out there (which is great in so far that it must mean that more and more foss-y folk are turning up but meh in the way that it makes us more attractive for those that don't get what we're about and just want to cause problems for people)08:09
christelredtape|renegade: well, we've had sponsors who have been taken down for a week+ due to persistent attacks08:10
redtape|renegadechristel: I see .. kinda untangible .. but disastorous all the same .. oh poo !08:11
diplo:/08:11
christelso i suspect in way of money lost by their paying clients followed by money lost by them followed by any charges they incur due to SLA, etc. violations along with resources by way of manpower spent trying to work on the issues, etc. etc it probably mounts up to a fairly hefty amount for most of them08:11
diploWhat are you doing ( Freenode ) to try and curb it ( if you know ? ) Police etc involved like the spamhaus attack ?08:12
christelwe pass on what we have of logs to law enforcement, but historically that yields nil or very little08:12
christelwe also work with some security type companies like team cymru etc08:13
diplosometimes glad we're so small a company that we're overlooked.08:13
diploI still feel that all the companies that benefit from Freenode should maybe take up the strain a bit for you guys and all the work you put in08:14
redtape|renegadechristel, This may sound a bit loopy, but why don't you split the network ?08:14
diploHmm ubuntu is on the acknowledgements page08:15
diploah, no direct financial support :)08:15
christelredtape|renegade: split it how? :)08:16
* redtape|renegade realises that would mean splitting freenode .. and scurries off to the idiot corner to find his hat .. :(08:17
christelhehe08:17
diploIf I was still at my last work place I'd offer up a server to host08:18
redtape|renegade(they did it on the 2600 network )08:18
diploSuppose I could still take over a box there :D08:18
christelthe saddest thing is that "freenode" doesn't suffer perse -- some individual volunteers do by way of having to invest more time trying to keep the network up (and thus falling behind in their jobs, etc.) -- but bar that we don't really suffer much from the attacks08:19
diploThink I may get shouted at here sustaining a 2-3mb link :)08:19
diploDo they need more 'volunteers' then ?08:20
christelit affects the projects that use freenode by causing interruption and it affects our sponsors (financially and by causing disruption to their networks)08:20
christelyeah, we always need volunteers -- manpower-wise we're lagging way behind (people keep doing weird stuff like having babies and getting married) and the network has been growing by around 10K users per year since 2006, the volunteer base does unfortunately not grow in a way corresponding to user growth so we sort of all end up a bit thinly spread :)08:21
diploWell I sit on here all day at work, and don't do a huge amount in the evenings.. especially when I have sproglets so I suppose I ought to do something :)08:22
MooDoochristel: so what kind of people do you need ps i'm married and have 2 children already ;)08:22

MooDooI'm at work now, and luckly I can ssh into my server at home and IRC08:23
diploMoi aussi :)08:23
christelhehe /1108:24
christelwe need i dunno, people who don't get freaked out/angry too easily (because you will face a lot of stupidity), someone who can adapt well to being part of a fairly small team (with a bizarre, twisted sense of humour) and who are able to step back and take a break before they suffer burnout :)08:25
redtape|renegadeyou should all think yourselves lucky .. least you had a good night's sleep ...08:25

brobostigonmornings christel08:39
christelhullu brobostigon :D08:39
brobostigon:)08:39
DJoneschristel: I think you'd probably get quite a few volunteers from a lot of IRC regulars, specially the ones who've stuck around for a number of years if you ever put a call out for volunteers, sadly, I think you'd also be deluged by the many trollish applicants as well08:40
MooDooidentified, sorry about that08:41
MooDooooops08:41
christelDJones: yeah, historically we find that when we do an "official" call for volunteers we'll get a few hundred "applications" -- narrow it down and after a short initial phase we sort of end up with maybe 1/3rd of the ones we selected08:41
christelin the olden days when the network was smaller we had more luck in the way of recruiting at ease because we had more of a chance to get to know users/projects and were in a better position to gauge suitability so that we could simply approach people -- these days there are so many users and so much noise that we tend to remember the "problem users" rather than the "decent users" :)08:42
brobostigonah,08:44
christelmind, we've had most success when picking people we knew from projects rather than doing the whole "please apply here" thing08:44
DJoneschristel: I'd agree with that from my own experience with the Ubuntu community, you recognise the good helpers because you see them almost every day giving good advice & support, trolls stick in your mind even if they only troll once or twice a month because they get noticed and have to be discussed & dealt with, everybody else gets to be a bit of a blur08:45
brobostigonmakes sense really, as you will know those people better, than unknown fremde applicants.08:45
christeltho it means that we go through phases, once upon a time staff were full of debianites... then they created oftc... then in my gentoo dev days we were full of gentoo folk.. these days we seem to like ubuntu people!08:46

mgdmoh dear15:03
mgdmif that's MySQL you might have entertaining table corruption...15:03
diploit's only my dev PC thankfully15:04

dwatkinsfunny that15:17
dwatkinsin fact, in all seriousness, it's surprisingly bright here, considering how far north I am.15:17
dwatkins(Edinburgh)15:17
mgdmit's rather bright in Glasgow too15:18
awilkinsI hate hot weather16:22
awilkinsInside it's too hot because the company we lease the office from are trying to save money on aircon16:22
awilkinsOutside it's too hot, because it's too hot16:22
awilkinsAlso, people are idiots and leave the blinds open even though it's too hot16:23

awilkinsI'm in the *north* of the UK16:24

awilkinsI hate people who come along and say "This feature isn't desired, so take it out."16:32

daftykinswhat's the best way to change APT mirror? i'm guessing a find and replace on sources.list might not be the best?19:05
MartijnVdSdaftykins: it works :)19:06
daftykinshehe19:06
MartijnVdSdaftykins: there's an option in the menu of software-centre19:06
daftykinsah this is server19:06
Daraeldaftykins: Depends.  With a GUI, the Software Sources tool (wherever that's hiding these days) will do it easily.19:06
MartijnVdSdaftykins: in that case.. vim :)19:06
DaraelGah.  Sniped.19:06
MartijnVdSDarael: internet high fived ;)19:06
DaraelMartijnVdS: vim?  VIM?  sed!19:07
MartijnVdSDarael: sed? ed!19:07
MartijnVdS(ed? magnets!)19:07
MartijnVdS(magnets? quantum fluctiations!)19:07
MartijnVdSOK, done.19:07
daftykinsyeah i'm not up on my reg exp though19:07
daftykinssed -i 's/us/<two letter country code here/' ?19:07
MartijnVdSdaftykins: write Perl for 15 years, you won't ever forget regex again;)19:07
daftykinslol19:08
MartijnVdSdaftykins: I'd do 's/us\./your_code.//'19:08
MartijnVdSjust because "music" shouldn't become "mgbic"19:08
DaraelMartijnVdS: One too many /, I think?19:08
daftykinsi'm afraid i don't think i can dedicated 15 years to this one19:08
MartijnVdSDarael: yes, oops19:08
daftykinsdoes that do every instance?19:09
DaraelDoes the first instance on each line, from memory.19:09
daftykinsah reet19:10
daftykinsgah - still got this program that does not do what is expected19:10
MartijnVdSs/foo/bar/g <-- the g does it "all the times" on a line19:10
daftykinsSource engine dedicated server, possibly 32-bit on a 64-bit server19:10
daftykinsso just then i installed 'ia32-libs' on a guides recommendation19:11
daftykins$ ./steam19:11
daftykinsChecking bootstrapper version ...19:11
daftykinsthat's all i get, heh19:11
MartijnVdSdaftykins: uh, ia32-libs is WAAY too much19:11
MartijnVdSalso, steam kind of requires X19:11
daftykinsreally?19:11
daftykinsi've got hldsupdatetool.bin which downloaded the 'steam' script19:12
MartijnVdSyeah.19:12
DaraelThe steam install (especially if it was from the partner repo) should have pulled in all its *:i386 dependencies.  ia32-libs shouldn't be necessary.19:12
daftykinsah well, that part's done19:12
DaraelWell, at least if steam's from a package.19:12
MartijnVdSeven if not from a package19:13
daftykinsit says if you run just 'steam' it'll spit out a list of its' commands19:13
MartijnVdSit'll detect Ubuntu and switch to package install19:13
DaraelMartijnVdS: Really?  Huh.  Shiny.19:13
MartijnVdSDarael: did for me anyway19:13
daftykinsguides online say to do: "./steam -command update -game episode1 -dir ."19:13
daftykinswhich just does as above, i.e. pretty much nothing19:13
MartijnVdScould be for old steam? no idea :(19:13
daftykinshttps://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Source_Dedicated_Server19:14
daftykinswell this does refer to a 'SteamCMD' but says that's for newer games 0o19:14
Daraeldaftykins: Do it with X forwarded and see if that yields any more info?19:14
daftykinshmm19:14
daftykinsgood idea19:14
daftykinsi shall have to boot a Linux host with X to try :D19:15
daftykinshmm nothing ssh -X'ing in19:18
daftykinsit did complain about a lack of .XAuthority19:18
daftykinsalright i have no idea why that sucker is doing nothing19:19
daftykinsi'm going to call it food o'clock and resume later19:19
StevenRarrrgh. Why does mdadm keep saying devices are spares?19:43
bigcalmGood evening peeps :)19:46

daftykinsStevenR: i read that as 'madam'20:00
daftykins:D20:00
MartijnVdSStevenR: "Kill the spare!" </voldemort>20:02

daftykinsok i tried it on my 13.04 VM20:12
daftykinsit still does exactly the same, no expected output20:12
daftykinsany ideas how to diagnose what it's doing? it's a .bin sadly =/20:12
daftykinsi'm pretty certain it's a CLI only dedicated server binary20:13
MartijnVdSstrace?20:13

daftykinsit stops there20:16
daftykinsah it's sitting trying IPs and timing out20:17
MartijnVdSare you not allowed to connect to those IPs?20:17
daftykinsperhaps that client has been ditched20:18
MartijnVdS$likely20:18
daftykinssome guy is talking about port forwarding for it online 0o20:21

daftykinsah he do some game server stuffs?21:06
daftykinsAzelphur: hello sir o/21:06
ali1234yeah you should never need ia32-libs any more because multiarch replaces it with individual packages21:07
daftykinsmmm, i tried it for fun since this program wasn't working, strace shows me it's failing to hit IPs though and timing out21:07
daftykinsso i know that for future now21:07
