TSKGreetings.  Hey, I was trying to install Kubuntu 13.04 (and 12.10 and 13.10, but they all exhibit the same issue) and discovered that there's apparently a problem with the installer for a lotta folk, where it hangs and won't continue past "Preparing to install".  Anyone else seen this issue?  I been Googling for two days now and finding few (non-working) solutions thus far.12:14
lordievaderTSK: Do you perhaps know what it is trying to do?12:15
TSKThus far I'm unable to find any reason for it's behaviour.  Nothing in the logs or the dmesg suggest any problem, yet it refuses to get past the "Preparing to install" stage into the part where you can choose partitions, etc.12:16
=== spawn[dead] is now known as spawn57
TSKIt's quite frustrating, as I'm used to Linux at least giving error messages when there's trouble.12:16
lordievaderTSK: Perhaps running ubuiqity from the commandline can give you a hint to what is wrong.12:17
BluesKaj_thtat sounds like the ubiqiuty bug , which hangs with certain types of HW recognition, TSK  , usually with amd64 cpu12:17
TSKUsually with an error message of some sort it's possible to diagnose or at least have a hint where to look.  THIS particular issue has been more than a bit bizarre in that respect.12:17
BluesKaj_TSK, are you running amd64 bit hardware ?12:18
TSKlordievader: No error messages when I do that.  No messages at all, actually.12:18
lordievaderHmm... that is annoying... It might indeed be the bug BluesKaj_ is talking about... :(12:19
BluesKaj_trhere won't be any error messages12:19
TSKBluesKaj_: According to /proc/cpuinfo it's "GenuineIntel"12:19
TSKIntel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU12:19
BluesKaj_I had the same problem TSK , which kubuntu are your running atm ?12:20
TSKAll nvidia chipset, too.  (Including all the control chips on the motherboard.)12:20
BluesKaj_TSK, yeah it's a difficult problem , nvidia all around here as well, except for the cpu12:21
TSKRight this instant I'm visiting IRC from the Kubuntu 13.10 LiveDVD,  but I have tried both Ubuntu and Kubuntu 12.10, 13.04, and 13.10 thus far and all show the same problem.  12.04 installed flawlessly (ever so long ago).12:21
BluesKaj_do you still have the 12.04 install ?12:22
TSKIt's on a different hard drive which is currently unplugged (due to it being in the act of dying).  Figured the shiny new hard drive (exact match replacement) was a good excuse to try a newer Ubuntu variant.12:23
BluesKaj_have you formatted the new drive ?12:23
TSKAlready rsync'd all my data off the old HD onto a (currently unplugged) external USB drive.12:23
TSKAye.  Several times thus far.12:23
TSKVarious filesystems, various partition schemes (including no partitions, unused space).12:24
TSKThus far nothing I've tried from any messageboard thread anywhere has gotten Ubiquity past that point.12:24
BluesKaj_recommend a / and a /home and swap fot the new drive, ext412:25
TSKStarting to look like mebbe I might be forced to install Kubuntu 12.04 and then upgrade (TWICE) to get to 13.04 (or THRICE if I want to test 13.10 pre-release).12:25
TSKI usually mount /home from a seperate drive entirely.  Makes it easier to upgrade if that drive fills due to user data.12:26
TSKAlso easier to back up the most important bit.  That user data... ;)12:27
BluesKaj_TSK, yeah ,unfortunately "the powers that be" dropped the alternat install/test-based12:29
TSKWell, I'm happy/sad to discover that I'm not the only person having this issue.  Wish there was some way I could help diagnose it tho, so it could be fixed once and for all.12:29
TSKAye.  I read that somewhere.  :(12:29
TSKWhat were they thinking?12:29
TSK*alternate install/text-based12:30
BluesKaj_TSK, I had all kinds of trouble with 13.04 livecd installer , so i installed 12.10 and upgrade from there , but your problem seems more serious12:31
TSKI'm seeing a disturbing trend lately to try and brutally and viciously murder anything that even remotely looks like a shell or "dos prompt".12:31
TSKThankfully I don't think it's possible to ever completely remove the shell from Linux.  I'd be lost if they ever did.  It's still far too useful for far too many things.12:32
BluesKaj_think it's the ease of use enterprise mentality taking over at canonical12:33
TSKNot just canonical, sadly.  It appears to be the overall opinion of "the masses" that the commandline is a "relic of the past" and needs to be destroyed for the good of all.12:34
TSKI see more and more discussion threads started these days about that very topic and full-on flamewars started between those who accept it as fact, and those who KNOW it for FUD.12:35
TSKI dunno why the shell has to die to please the people who fear it.  Why can't they just stay away from it if it terrifies them that much?12:35
BluesKaj_don't think the command line is going anywhere in the foreseeable future .. it's here to stay for devs and the rest of us who wish to use it .12:36
TSKAye.  I'm sure it's here to stay, really.  Just a bit strange that there's a growing crowd of folk clamoring for it's destruction when it's not even relevant to them.12:38
BluesKaj_let the cli-phobes fool with their guis .12:38
TSKAnd then to see text based "alternate installers" gettin' kicked to the curb leads to a bit of concern (at least with regards to Ubuntu and Canonical).12:39
TSKI'm all for makin' stuff easier, sure, but right now an alternate installer would sure be easier than what I'm currently tryin' to AVOID doin'.  (Upgrading unnecessarily twice in a row or even thrice.)12:41
TSKI guess I have no choice tho.12:41
* TSK goes to download Kubuntu 12.04 again.12:41
BluesKaj_yeah TSK , can't think of of an alternative (pun inteneded)12:43
TSKOooo, hmmm...  I suppose I could try Mint.12:43
TSK(Just read in one of the threads I'm still researching that it worked out nicely for someone else to just go with KDE Mint.)12:44
TSKOnly problem with that tho is I believe if I wanted to "downgrade" to pure Ubuntu, that's not an easy task.12:44
BluesKaj_well, that's your call12:44
* yofel_ notes that the alternate wasn't dropped because nobody was using it or because it is evil, it was killed because there was not enough manpower willing to properly QA it12:45
TSKBasically, it seems as if the choice is easy now, hard later, or hard now, maybe easy later?12:45
yofel_ubuntu-server alternate + kubuntu-desktop task is an easy enough workaround12:45
TSKyofel_: OOoo!  GOOD IDEA!12:45
* TSK wonders why he didn't think of that.12:46
yofel_it's easy to miss the obvious :P12:46
BluesKaj_me included ...good suggestion yofel_12:46
TSKGosh, I bet that works, too.12:46
BluesKaj_yofel_, kubuntu-desktop task ?12:47
TSKAll these complicated messageboard threads and not ONE person suggested that.12:47
TSKBluesKaj_: kde-desktop I think (metapackage)12:48
BluesKaj_not alot of users even in linux think of installing server editions12:48
yofel_BluesKaj_: at some point tasksel asks you what package sets you want to intall. Kubuntu Desktop should be one of the choices12:48
yofel_TSK: meta package would be kubuntu-desktop12:49
BluesKaj_right , tasksel ..yeah , now i recall ..I did try ubuntu server with kde-desktop a couple of years back12:49
BluesKaj_thought I was gonna setup a small family webserver, but I was in over my head with trying to build a website ...none of the "easydo" sites like godaddy appealed to me.12:51
TSKThere we go.  Got the iso burning now.  Thanks a ton for a FANTASTIC idea.  Should also result in a slightly cleaner system, too.  :)12:52
TSKBluesKaj_: Static website?12:52
TSK(Non-dynamic content?)12:52
BluesKaj_yeah. my Isp charges a minimal fee for a static IP12:53
TSKhttp://ringce.com/hyde12:54
TSKBluesKaj_: Actually, I meant the content itself.  Static content on yer website, or were you planning to have a messageboard and all that fancy dynamic stuff?12:54
BluesKaj_but l;ike most families , the kids all use email and facebook for their communication , some texting12:54
TSKIf you was goin' for static content, you can use a site generator for that bit.  If you wanted messaging and comments and stuff that starts to get a bit more complex (tho you could always embed something javascripty via cut'n'paste into the static site to handle comments, etc).12:56
BluesKaj_no , i didn't get that far TSK  ..as soon as I saw what was required for the kind of site I wanted , it just fizzled12:56
TSKAnother option would be to just install one of the ready-made open source content management systems (CMS) and use that, but if you did, be sure to stay on top of updates, as dynamic sites tend to open up avenues of attack for "script kiddiez".12:58

TSKNice.  KVPN no workie?13:09
monkeyjuice#kubuntu-offtopic maybe?13:09
TSKOr Network Manager?13:09
BluesKaj_TSK, without NM13:10
TSKBluesKaj_: Just wondering about Network Manager, because I know (at least on Kubuntu) it has VPN support.13:10
BluesKaj_yes it does , but I could never get it work anyway13:11
TSKBluesKaj_: On the "Manage Connections" window you can get at.13:11
TSKAh, I see.  I've only ever tried it with PPTP VPN and it worked fine for me with that, but there seems to be more than a few other options it claims to support.13:12
TSKAll of which I've never yet tried.13:12
BluesKaj_I dumpewd NM a long time ago and went with the network/interfaces and resolv.conf (now aka: /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/base)13:13
TSKAh, right on.  Hardcoded network config.  Certainly much more reliable.13:14
BluesKaj_TSK, my knowlege of VPN back then was probly why I couldn't make it work , but I've doing some research in the last while and perhaps NM might be to my benefit again13:15
TSKWell, where Network Manager is useful for ME is that I have a wireless card in my machine (and on my Kubuntu powered netbook as well) and it's rather convenient for that purpose.13:16
TSKBTW, for any of y'all who've never tried it, Kubuntu is quite happy on Acer Aspire One netbooks.  Mine's been runnin' great usin' Kubuntu from day one (when I INSTANTLY Wiped Win7 Home from it the minute I got it home).  ;)13:17
BluesKaj_yeah , my old laptop wifi worked from the get go with NM13:18
TSKAll the features work as expected, including power management, sleep, wifi, brighness, volume, etc, etc.13:18
TSKKubuntu + Netbook = Mobile Bliss13:18
BluesKaj_acver seems more linux friendlky harware-wise than alot of others13:19
BluesKaj_err acer13:19
* BluesKaj_ goes for another coffee13:20

TSKMmmCoffee ~ Me too!13:20
* TSK runs to the brewmaster.13:20
TSKSo, assumedly, kubuntu-desktop gets not JUST the KDE desktop, but all the extra little Kubuntu bits as well, aye?13:23
* TSK is ready to reboot and try out yofel_'s suggestion.13:24
BluesKaj_TSK, yeah , that's probly your best bet ..I'm going try to remember that suggestion13:26

TSKBeats the heck outta having to upgrade from 12.04 (twice).  :)14:30

TSKcahir: A friend of mine recently updated his laptop to the latest Kubuntu because Muon offered it to him and he clicked "Upgrade" or "Install" or whatever option it gives there.15:32

paul_reiserI am having trouble connecting my HDMI to my TV. If I try to connect HDMI through my receiver, there is no feed. However, if I run it straight from my video card, it works fine. Thoughts?21:23
ahoneybunreceiver?21:24
BluesKajpaul_reiser,are you using hdmi monitor out on the receiver to feed the tv?21:25
paul_reiseryes21:25
BluesKajpaul_reiser, my setup is different , since I don't hdmi inputs or outputs on my receiver , i feed the hdmi directly to the tv and the pcm/spdif audio out to the digital inputs on the receiver21:29
BluesKajyou could loop the audio back to the receiver from the tv digital out instead , paul_reiser21:31
ospi3BluesKaj: hi, any news of |kira and Thunderbird Backup Exploder?21:31
paul_reiserThats worth a try21:31
paul_reiserthanks21:31
BluesKajboth work here , Ive treis bothg setups21:32
BluesKajpaul_reiser,^21:32
BluesKajtried21:32
BluesKajospi3, that's first ive heard of Thunderbird Backup Exploder21:33
paul_reiserwell i recently switched from a desktop with windows 7 to a desktop with kubuntu 13.0421:33
paul_reiserand my old setup worked fine with the same video card21:33
ospi3BluesKaj: you were there with us yesterday, dont you remember?21:33
ospi3BluesKaj: you said kira is a lurker...21:34
BluesKajeshlox, I may have been logged in , but I wasn't around for a lot of the time21:35
BluesKajospi3,^21:35
BluesKajI don't see anything about it on google21:35
|kiraospi3: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/ I was going to make something a lot like this standalone, but this does what I need, probably good for you too21:41
lorddeltaHi, are there problems with the ppas? I was hoping to cross reference my info someone else; I'm having lots of crashes, and I can't submit the bug reports because drkonqi is crashing, and it doesn't seem its in my repositories...21:46
lorddeltaso I can't purge it and re-install21:46
ahoneybunlorddelta: you can purge a ppa and then do a update and upgrade21:47
lorddeltahttps://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/ppa precise main is failing on update21:47
lorddeltaahoneybun: what do you mean?21:47
lorddeltaDo I just remove the line from sources.list, update, and then do-over again?21:47
ahoneybunthat has no precise builds21:48
ahoneybunyou need to remove that ppa and add the kubuntu-backports ppa21:48
lorddeltaahoneybun: but they exist (somewhere)?21:48
lorddeltaah21:48
ahoneybunthen update and upgrade21:49
lorddeltaSorry, its not like there's a manual anywhere stating this sort of stuff.21:49
ahoneybunlorddelta: np that's why there is this irc channel :)21:49
ahoneybunfor support21:49
lorddeltaThat's the sort of thing I wish we had notifications for; like you know, a system mail that we could read :)21:51
lorddeltahmmm21:51
lorddelta'W: Failed to fetch https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/ppa/dists/kubuntu-backports/main/binary-amd64/Packages  The requested URL returned error: 404'21:51
lorddeltawhat's the second part of the ppa?21:52
lorddeltaI just have this line: 'deb https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/ppa kubuntu-backports main'21:52
ahoneybunopen up muon software center21:52
ahoneybungo to settings and then software sources21:53
ahoneybunand remove the ppa kubuntu-ppa21:53
ahoneybunand add the kubuntu-backports ppa21:54
ahoneybunlook in the other software tab21:54
ahoneybunfor the ppa's21:54
ospi3|kira: yes this should be it i think: "export of all messages in single files (eml or html or plain text format or CSV), with attachments and an index"21:54
ahoneybunhow are you doing there lorddelta?21:56
lorddelta...hmm...I didn't know about muon, but it doesn't seem to work after I type in the password for software sources...21:56
lorddeltahttps://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/backports <-- Is that the right deb perhaps?21:57
lorddeltappa:kubuntu-ppa/backport21:57
BluesKajahoneybun, I'm peeved at the lack of intgration between the software sources in muon and the /etc/apt/sources.list..updating after making changes in the sources list aren't reflected the sources listed in muon21:57
ahoneybunBluesKaj: even after a sudo apt-get update before starting Muon?21:58
BluesKajyesd21:58
ahoneybunlorddelta: weird21:58
lorddelta'sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backport21:58
lorddeltaCannot access PPA (https://launchpad.net/api/1.0/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/backport) to get PPA information, please check your internet connection.'21:58
ahoneybunoh21:58
ahoneybunno no21:58
ahoneybunsudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-backports21:58
ahoneybunsorry21:59
BluesKajone has to manually enable the sources in muon , altho they are listed in muon when added in the sources.list21:59
lorddeltastill complains about my internet connection21:59
lorddelta>_>21:59
lorddeltawhich I'm clearly using22:00
ahoneybunBluesKaj: weird22:00
BluesKajafter runing the update22:00
BluesKajyeah22:00
lorddeltaHmm I'm gonna revert to adding stuff straight to the sources.list and seeing what works...22:00
ahoneybunlorddelta: lets start from just the software that came with the release22:01
ahoneybunyour on 12.04 right?22:01
lorddeltaYup22:01
ahoneybunok22:01
ahoneybunit is /kubuntu-ppa/backports22:01
ahoneybunppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports22:02
lorddeltaBtw I added22:02
lorddeltadeb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu precise main to my sources.list, ran an update, apparently their GPA key has changed...22:02
lorddeltaGPG22:02
ospi3|kira: thank you22:02
lorddelta...hmm the ppa worked this time :D22:03
lorddeltanot sure why but hey!22:03
ahoneybunsweet22:03
ahoneybunI would like to know why though22:03
lorddeltamaybe its what BluesKaj was talking about?22:03
ahoneybunmaybe22:03
ahoneybunlets remove the ppas other then the backport one22:04
ahoneybunand then so a sudo apt-get update and upgrade22:04
lorddeltaI've only got these ppas with "kubuntu in them"22:04
lorddeltadeb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu precise main22:04
lorddeltadeb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu precise main22:04
lorddeltaAnd the update was successfull!22:04
lorddeltaO.o22:05
lorddeltaAnd there are the updates22:05
lorddelta107 of them lol22:05
lorddeltaheh konq is one of them, good :)22:05
ahoneybungood22:05
ahoneybunok so you are good?22:06
lorddeltaI should be! I'll stick around if drkonqi keeps acting up but I suspect this will fix lots of things22:06
ahoneybunok great :)22:06
lorddeltaThanks!22:06
ahoneybunnp!22:06
BluesKajlorddelta, yes updating upgrading and even dist-upgrading , every week or 2 can help keep packages stable , also an autoremove and autoclean is also good practice mevery few weeks22:08
BluesKajok , I'm off ...enough for one day22:11
ahoneybunBluesKaj: see ya!22:11
lorddeltaBluesKaj: I know, I try, I'd been getting a message about bad updates for a bit, I just didn't realize it was the kubuntu repository that had failed. Hence all the updates.22:14
