recodeHi, I just reinstalled Windows 8 on my notebook (HDD), then I installed Ubuntu 13.04 on the internal SSD. If I boot, grub 2 appears as expected, but when I select Windows 8, there's the message, that bootinformation cannot be found or is corrupt. The thing is, if I hit F12 while booting and select windows boot manager, windows boots as expected. Does anyone know a reason why windows doesn't boot using grub?14:24
=== jeanaustinr is now known as jeanaustinr|x
holsteinrecode: is that something you want to "fix"? or are you just going to use it as is? i would think you should be able to make grub boot windows14:36
holsteinrecode: do you have more than one entry for windows?14:36
recodeyes, there's windows 8 and windows recovery14:37
holsteinrecode: and you have tried both?14:37
recodeholstein: and yes, I want to get it to work via grub14:37
holsteinfirst thing i would do is run "sudo update-grub"14:37
holsteinrecode: does the recovery option work?14:37
recodeholstein: no, both show the same error-message14:38
holsteinrecode: what about after running "sudo update-grub" ?14:38
recodeholstein: give me a minute, I'll try.14:39
recodeholstein: does not change anything14:44
holsteinrecode: i would look at the entries in grub.. i would consider a different boot loader.. i would ask the other operating system maintainer if there is something that is preventing grub from booting it14:45
recodeholstein: It starts the windows boot manager, but it says: The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors.14:45
holsteinrecode: you know windows *can* boot.. and you know grub is working14:45
holsteinrecode: so, you cannot boot windows?14:45
recodeholstein: yes, windows can boot, but not using grub14:45
holsteinrecode: ok.. so the facts still remain then14:46
recodeholstein: and grub is working for ubuntu14:46
holsteini get http://support.gateway.com/s/Checklists/BPC/ck2007051178.shtml http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-system/windows-8-error-the-boot-configuration-data-file/ef046fc5-770e-4fe0-97f7-60144a111f2614:47
holsteinbut those ^^ make it seem like the windows boot is broken, and that might not be the case for you14:48
holstein!grub | recode14:48
ubot93recode: GRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager. Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - For more information and troubleshooting for GRUB2 please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub214:48
recodeholstein: it's a very special issue^^14:51
holsteinrecode: sure.. but i dont think it is14:51
holsteinrecode: i think its something you'll need to manually edit grub for.. what would i do? i would just push f12 and relax about it.. i would also try another boot manager, like GAG, which iirc can be used 'live' to test14:53
holsteinthe fact is, windows isnt broken, nor is grub..14:53
recodeholstein: I'll try to reinstall both again, shouldn't need much time^^15:16
holsteinrecode: yeah?15:16
holsteinrecode: nothing is broken though.. it should just be the same.. i would try another boot manager before that15:17
recodeholstein: in gparted, only /dev/sdb has a boot-flagged partition, /dev/sda doesnt (this is the SSD), can this produce this error?15:31
holsteinrecode: wont hurt to try that.. how did the GAG boot manager work?15:33
holsteinrecode: although, the partition boots other ways15:33
recodeI'm reading about gag at the moment15:33
OaI'm trying to boot Ubuntu from a usb. It asks me for login and password. I obviously have neither. Help!15:41
holsteinOa: it? what? a terminal?15:42
recodeholstein: There are no free space to install GAG.15:43
recodeRemake your partitions to ensure that they start after the sector 6315:43
OaThe screen says "Ubuntu Saucy Salamander (development branch) ubuntu tty115:43
holsteinrecode: you shouldnt need to install it to test..15:44
Oaubuntu login:"15:44
holstein!13.1015:44
ubot93Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander) will be the 19th release of Ubuntu. Announcement: http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/1252 - Discussion and support in #ubuntu+115:44
holsteinOa: you can download a supported final release, or try #ubuntu+1 ..but its not release yet15:44
OaWhat is the difference from what I am trying to use now?15:45
holsteinOa: the one you have, 13.10 is *not* released yet.. so its not supported yet15:45
holstein13.04 *is* supported15:46
holsteinthats the major difference that is relevant to you now15:46
OaSupported by what?15:46
holsteinOa: by anyone15:46
holsteinOa: its not out yet.. that could be a bug you are encountering that is not meant to work yet15:47
OaAnyway, I tried 13.04 before, and the same thing happened.15:47
OaShould I try an earlier version?15:47
holsteinSometimes a LiveCD might ask you for a user-name or password. Just leave these blank and press enter (or allow it to time-out).15:47
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD from here15:47
holsteinOa: you should use a supported, actually released version of ubuntu if you want support15:48
holsteinOa: 13.10, the version you have, is *not* released yet. thus,, not supported yet15:48
OaBut 13.04 is?15:48
holsteinOa: you are saying "i am having issues with 13.10" and i am saying, "its not out yet, thus, not supported here, or in any channels but #ubuntu+1"15:49
holstein!13.04 | Oa15:49
ubot93Oa: Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) is the current release of Ubuntu. Download http://releases.ubuntu.com/13.04/ - Release notes: http://ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/13.0415:49
holsteinOa: the 13 is the year, and the .04 is the month.. so yes.. 13.04 was released in april this year, and *is* supported.. and *should* work15:49
holstein13.10 will be released in october, and will be supported at that time.. otherwise, you are "on your own" with what does and doesn not work about it15:50
OaI understand. But the things that don't work with 13.10 didn't work with 13.04 either.15:52
OaAnd I have tried to press enter without writing anything.15:53
holsteinOa: are you at a command prompt?15:54
holsteinyou shouldnt be at a command prompt15:54
holsteini think you are failing to load a graphics driver.. or something else is crashing for some reason15:54
OaThe screen is black with white text. No graphics. If that's what you mean.15:54
holstein!nomodeset | Oa15:54
ubot93Oa: A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter15:54
holstein^^ i would try nomodeset from a live CD15:55
OaWhat is that?15:55
holsteinOa: i think you are assuing this "the credentials for the live user are not working and im not logging into the desktop".. what could also, and is more likley happening "the desktop is crashing ddue to driver support for your graphics card15:56
holsteinOa: you can read about nomodeset, and try it via live CD.. you should boot to the desktop.. not a prompt15:56
OaOkay, I'll check the forum link, and see if that makes me wiser.15:57
OaIt didn't work.16:11
holsteinwhat didnt do what?16:11
holsteinnomodeset didnt get you to a desktop from a live CD? from a 13.04 live CD?16:12
OaActually, I was still using 13.10. Now I'm trying to use 13.04 again, but it seems it doesn't suffice to just copy the files back to the usb.16:40
OaSo I guess I'll have to do it from the beginning.16:41
OaWould you suggest that I use 13.04 (which didn't work last time I tried) or to use an older version?16:42
OaSo, now I'm trying with 9.10.17:21
OaI'ts not asking for login now. Instead it says:17:21
Oa"Temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled"17:22
OaThis is repeated many times.17:22
OaAnd at the bottom of the screen, it says:17:22
Oa"ubuntu@ubuntu:~$"17:23
recodeholstein: got it to work by reinstalling both and installing ubuntu to hdd instead of ssd18:32
recodeholstein: so, thats not true, but it's a solution for me18:34
recodeholstein: windows is starting if I do not do anything (without grub) and pressing f12 lets me select ubuntu and I can start ubuntu. starting windows out of grub doesnt work again, but this way I dont need that18:35
jackson34443i am very new at using ubuntu and linux (first day) I am trying to install flash on a 64bit machine.23:34

jackson34443jeff@ubuntu:/usr/lib/flash-plugin$ sudo ln -s /usr/lib/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so ln: failed to create symbolic link `./libflashplayer.so': File exists jeff@ubuntu:/usr/lib/flash-plugin$23:36
Unit193Oh dear... Well that's wrong, what you should do is actually install it from the repo.  What version of Ubuntu do you have?23:40
Unit193I recommend enableing the partner repo and installing adobe-flashplugin.23:40
