[06:16] morning all [06:16] hi Xethron [06:18] hi nlsthzn we getting min here again [06:18] alo [06:39] good morning [06:39] hi magespawn_ [06:39] And we are growing tails [06:39] ya the few thats left === magespawn_ is now known as magespawn [06:40] internet been sick a while now [06:40] Lots of splits and such [06:40] i dunno where everyone else is [06:41] we were at 40 for weeks [06:42] Working, not-working or maybe just busy? [06:43] sigh [06:43] Today i start the search for a high school for fish one [06:44] wow already [06:44] boarding school? [06:44] or pangeni [06:44] Well i have no idea what is out there so? [06:44] We will look at both. [06:45] hiya maiatoday [06:46] whew you gonna need to find more work [06:46] methinks schools have got expensive now [06:46] For sure [06:47] Like the cost of a new car per year [06:47] i moaned about maritzburg college 20 yuears ago [06:47] wow what you gonna do? [06:49] Hi Kilos [06:55] Kilos that is why the wife and I are both studying [06:55] all the best with that magespawn [06:55] she with be an accountant in a couple of years [06:56] and your studies? [06:56] you need to be a member of parliament to afford schooling looks like [06:57] Not that bad, and there is a wide range of fees [06:57] ya and then the extras [06:57] hi trender [06:57] yo [06:58] they never end, every coupla weeks they ask for so much for this or that [06:59] Some for hostel and school about R69000 rand per year [07:01] eina [07:02] i moaned about 3k a year [07:07] Drakensburg boys choir at R97100.00 [07:07] try maritzburg college [07:07] very good school [07:07] but far [07:08] Most are far [07:08] ya from you they will be [07:26] Hi there, yesterday I tried installing Ubuntu 13.04 dual boot with my Win XP. Did the whole procedure. Now I only get Win XP at start up , and also get a Win messgae ""checking file system on C:" "volume label is System" "one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency"etc [07:26] Is this the right place to get help? [07:27] Hi fiklig [07:27] Hi Magespawn [07:27] Yes it is, this is the voluteer help channel [07:28] hi fiklig [07:28] Great! [07:28] Hi Kilos [07:28] that sounds to me like the ubuntu install did not complete correctly [07:29] yeah grub aint completed [07:29] fiklig: can you boot your win xp and get a working os? [07:29] Yes, at the end it ejected the CD and then terminated all processes and just hunf there, and I had to manuallly shut down [07:30] Sorry, got mixed up. Yes, I can boot the Win XP and have a workign OS, but int he bootup it gives achkdsk error message "one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency" [07:30] magespawn, thats where boot-repair fixed things [07:31] does the win xp see the whole hard drive or is part of it hidden, ie you now have 40gb hadrdrive instead of 80gb? [07:31] but i dunno if it works with 13.04 [07:32] magespawn - I'll have to check wheterh it sees the whole drive . . . just give me a minute or 2 to check please [07:32] i dont think xp will see the ext4 parts [07:33] I just looked at the hardrive, only 121 GB fo 250 disk is showing under windows [07:33] only 121 GB of 250 GB disk . . .. [07:33] so it looks like the ubuntu partitioning worked [07:34] ok [07:34] so perhaps just the grub is the problem which is the boot loader for ubuntu [07:34] let me google [07:34] thanks [07:38] wbb sheep time [07:39] kilos - sorry?? what is "wbb sheep time" [07:39] fiklig is there critical data on the machine? [07:39] will be back sheep time [07:40] magespawn - I did trnasfer all my data to new 1 Tbyte Hardrive [07:40] Kilos looks after sheep he is going to check on them and Be Back Later [07:40] maybe follow the instructions here http://askubuntu.com/questions/256879/dual-boot-menu-not-showing-after-installation-of-ubuntu-12-04 [07:40] magespawn - thanks! intersting sideline !! ;-) [07:40] thanks I'll look up the link now [07:41] magespawn, i once had a prob the same. xp wouldnt allow grub into the mbr [07:41] i think thats when i dumped xp totally [07:41] fiklig: a lot of the guys here are busy at work at the moment, so it does help t hang around [07:43] thanks I was just checking, the last thing I did when installing 13.04 , the message to restart, then ejected the disc, then this message"asking askign all remai9ning rpocesses to terminate" [OK]" and then it hung. Is thatnormal? [07:46] no that is just before the computer shuts down or reboots. that fact that it hung can indicate a problem of some sort [07:47] there is also the forums on the ubuntu and ubuntu-za websites where you go for info, and google is your friend [07:48] most of the problems come up with later versions of windows, xp usually plays nicely [07:48] thanks I had tried googleing, shall try ubuntu-za website now. Thanks for your help. I'll try the bootrepair link also. How do I log out of this IRC? [07:49] Kilos: what is the mailing list link? [07:49] sec [07:49] fiklig: how did you get here? from the site or are you using a irc client? [07:49] http://bit.ly/MCOujZ [07:49] from the ubuntu-za site [07:49] fiklig: you can also ask here ^^ [07:50] probable just close the tab/windows with the chat in [07:50] magespawn, there is a way to boot from the cd and install grub again but i think you gotta mnt the drive first [07:51] magespawn: and kilos: I'll use the install CD and "try ubuntu" option, and then try the grub repair using command line [07:52] I really appreciate you guys advice, thanks again .... [07:52] visit here often fiklig [07:52] aw [07:53] its grub-pc he has to install i think [08:00] yup that was in the link i gave him [08:00] or her [08:01] ah [08:06] right at the bottom there was another link to boot repair home page as well [08:07] ah you shoulda pointed him there [08:08] boot-repair is a good tool [08:08] from live cd [08:44] ohi [08:47] ho superfly [08:47] work already or only tomorrow [08:48] hey superfly [08:50] work today [08:51] shame [08:51] well youll need it to recover from the lekker holiday methinks [08:51] and you can kick that guy [08:52] forget his nick [08:52] oh superfly did you ingress all the wqay [08:52] way [08:56] http://www.khaleejtimes.com/kt-article-display-1.asp?xfile=data/uaebusiness/2013/June/uaebusiness_June158.xml§ion=uaebusiness [08:57] Kilos: a little bit [09:19] superfly how is the weather down there? [09:36] Squirm: there was an "Ubuntu Hour" near durbs [09:36] I met kbmonkey and Vince-0 (in addition to nuvolari) [09:36] which I absolutely forgot about :/ [09:37] aw Squirm old age catching up [09:56] it is pretty cool to meet online people face to face [09:58] I've met nuvolari [09:58] hmm [09:58] I've met a whole 2 people from irc [09:58] :P [09:59] lol ive only met the pro [09:59] nice guy [10:03] hi Vince-0 [10:03] wb [10:04] hi charl [10:05] hi Kilos [10:05] how's it going [10:05] ok ty and you? [10:05] good thanks [10:12] sorry accidentally pressed meta+shift+e instead of meta+shift+q [10:12] still need to get used to i3 [10:13] Maaz: coffee on [10:13] * Maaz washes some mugs [10:14] Hi Kilos [10:15] 2nd sick day - [10:16] so I get to tinker with LDAP for the desktop's auth [10:17] Coffee's ready for charl! [10:17] howdy Vince-0 charl Squirm [10:17] Maaz: thanks [10:17] charl: Sure [10:17] 36 Kilos [10:17] hi magespawn [10:17] haai [10:17] 37 [10:17] * Kilos holds thumbs [10:17] Squirm: is it you who works at Treverton? [10:17] magespawn: indeed it is [10:18] Vince-0: i did that years ago, central ldap login with openldap, pretty cool stuff [10:18] i was jsut checking out high schools for 2016 [10:18] just [10:18] Vince-0: only problem: when ldap goes down :( [10:18] that is when fish one goes [10:19] prep/college? [10:19] college grade 7 [10:19] yes! also , this has to be on ldap2,linux mint 13 [10:19] magespawn: grade 8? [10:19] yes sorry [10:19] Vince-0: am i getting the right impression that, these days, linux mint is more popular than ubuntu? [10:20] I use mint [10:20] Vince-0: i get the impression that ubuntu has taken a big blow due to unity [10:20] at office and at home [10:20] Squirm: main motivation? [10:20] charl: that's why I'm using mint [10:20] Mint MATE [10:20] ah i see [10:20] anyone use cinnamon? [10:20] didn't appear to be terribly stable last when i used it but it looks very promising [10:26] yes indeed [10:26] Mate's OK - it runs on 1GB RAM systems [10:26] well even windows 8 runs on 1gb ram systems :P [10:26] does not exactly give me the feeling of minimalism :P [10:27] it's a pitty the desktop environment decides the distro [10:27] i am using standard ubuntu with i3 now, the new xubuntu also looks great, lubuntu too [10:27] too many choices [10:27] I have half an idea to get makululinux a go [10:28] lol [10:28] wheres the other half [10:28] only look at it now for the first time [10:29] it looks like an african project, anyone know who is behind it? [10:29] i have not seen many african distributions the last while, there used to be a couple [10:29] ubuntu is too actually, but that kind of went international [10:29] business needs ability to easily lock down tight 200+ linux desktops - (can't get mate to disable wallpaper change reliably) [10:30] define lock down tight? [10:30] some Pretoria guy, he's quite good - getting I think 5 DE's in one [10:30] that's not so difficult actually [10:30] most just don't do it out of choice [10:31] it's all just package selection [10:31] program compatibility is lots of work? [10:31] program compatibility? [10:31] what does that have to do with the DE? [10:31] Cinnamon, Gnome, KDE, Mate, Xfce [10:31] o/ lo [10:32] er, iol.co.za is falling over [10:32] Maaz: is iol.co.za up? [10:32] it all just comes down to application themeing but in principle it doesn't matter [10:32] nuvolari: No, http://iol.co.za/ is down (Server is not responding) [10:32] hi nuvolari [10:32] hello charl [10:33] lo nuvolari [10:33] i'm going for a walk outside, bbl... [10:35] oh hi Kilos :) [10:35] hi all [11:32] nuvolari: have you seen why? [11:33] it's being DDoS'd by Hactivists [11:57] yo Sub_Oracle [11:58] Squirm: how do you know that? [11:58] pastebin url? [11:58] http://www.news24.com/Technology/News/IOL-confirms-DDOS-attack-20130612 [12:27] wow nice, they supported mugabe, that is shocking [12:27] http://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/hackers-attack-iol-1.1531273 [12:29] i agree with otter no point in taking down a site like that [12:29] i was interviewed by him a long time ago [12:30] i see on their twitter they are about to take down http://www.zanupf.org.zw/ [12:33] harhar [12:34] ... and it's down lol [12:39] https://twitter.com/zim4thewin/status/344794788551356416 [12:39] if only taking down a website that probably nobody visits anyway could account for lost lives [12:41] just looking at https://twitter.com/ZANUPF_Official it seems all they do is slander mdc-t [13:13] have a good evening, all! [13:13] i'm off [15:06] Squirm: nope, didn't see why [15:06] but it came back up later [15:06] ah, I thought so much [17:17] Spaceman! :D [17:17] Babylon Zoo - Spaceman [17:17] For the bandwidth-equipped under us: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeUx5sdp3qM === smile4ever is now known as smile4space [17:19] hi smile4space [17:19] Hi Kilos :) How are you feeling? [19:02] magespawn: yep [19:02] oh my [19:02] they need to change the app to use API v1.1 [19:02] so pidgin no good either anymore? [19:02] magespawn: https://dev.twitter.com/blog/api-v1-is-retired [19:02] or gwibber [19:02] ahh well, that kinda sucks, will have to wait a bit for that [19:03] yeah i saw something alpng those lines on twitter, i think [19:03] and the sad part is that twitter RSS feeds have now also been retired [19:03] * inetpro can't understand why people don't want RSS any more [19:04] aw [19:04] i like RSS <3 [19:04] what are they using instead? [19:04] Cantide: that's what we need to figure out now [19:04] people be crazy '< [19:04] there is no alternative that does the same thing IMHO at this stage [19:05] obviously I could be wrong [19:05] again? [19:06] Kilos: probably [19:06] aw [19:06] so then its twit place via browser [19:06] i love rss, best way to keep update with lots of info [19:07] ill need another workspace [19:07] hehe [19:07] magespawn: absolutely right [19:07] and if you have the right client you update and read offline [19:08] Kilos: maybe try one of the other clients [19:09] ya will have to try something [19:09] inetpro, is it dead already [19:09] magespawn: I also used to monitor a twitter search string or two as RSS feeds, now those are all broken [19:09] Kilos: yep, they officially retired (killed) it today [19:09] never tried that [19:10] with lots of warning of course [19:10] i go see what pidgin twitter says [19:10] they actually did extend the retirement date with a month already [19:10] should have been dead in May [19:11] but as usual everyone waits until the last minute to fix things if at all [19:12] * inetpro was silently hoping that the devs would fix things for me [19:13] ya pidgin twitter dead too [19:13] the droid twitter still works [19:13] swines [19:14] actually tweetdeck for android was also supposed to die, but mine is still working [19:14] sflr and corrie gonna be lost [19:15] Kilos: I don't think so, they are probably using something that is already using the new API [19:15] isn't there a tweetdeck for ubuntu? runs on adobe air? [19:18] magespawn: tweetdeck on the web is perfect, but [19:18] it's not the same as a dedicated client [19:18] See: https://web.tweetdeck.com/ [19:19] i though it was only a client, learn something new each day [19:19] * inetpro just loves the simplicity of choqok [19:19] fortunately choqok should be back soon [19:20] http://momeny.wordpress.com/2013/06/12/choqok-will-back-soon [19:20] what is it?
