popeyAlanBell: happy birthday!10:27
shaunoit's been ages (10+ years) since I was on a non-debian distro.  now I can't raise a network on 'scientific linux' and I feel like a complete fish out of water10:52
MartijnVdSshauno: not even using "ip" or "ifconfig"?11:05
* MartijnVdS wouldn't know how to configure anything other than Debian(based) or OpenWRT distros11:05
MartijnVdSwell.. using google of course11:06
shaunoMartijnVdS: yeah, I got that far, but I can't get it to survive a reboot11:09
bigcalmGood morning peeps :)11:52
MartijnVdShi bigcalm11:52
bigcalmKerbal Space Program is fun :)11:56
bigcalmAnd oops, it's the afternoon11:58
penguin42hey BC12:17
AlanBellthanks popey13:52
christelhappy birthday old man! <313:52
* AlanBell is old13:53
christelyes, this is tru e:(13:56
* penguin42 has about 3 weeks to go before he gets older13:57
brobostigonit has been said of me, i am an old man, is a young mans body.13:58
brobostigonin*13:59
* penguin42 isn't too sure that his body isn't trying to catch up13:59
brobostigonwell, being diagnosed with osteoporosis and braking my right hip 4 years ago, will do that.14:00
penguin42ouch, yeh - did you manage to break the hip while doing something outlandish or something that shouldn't have been able to do it?14:01
brobostigoncloser to the latter, it gradually became weaker, over some time, when out for the quiz on thursday, felt some pain walking home, tried to get out of bed next morning, fell on my face, it gave up underneath me.14:02
penguin42ouch14:03
brobostigonquite, yes.14:04
bigcalmHow does one find out if a package was installed from a ppa or not?14:19
penguin42bigcalm: Try apt-cache policy14:20
bigcalmhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/5771032/14:21
bigcalmLooks like it didn't come from the ppa14:21
bigcalmGood14:21
bigcalmI've just upgraded from 12.10 to 13.0414:21
bigcalmgeary was one of the things I had from a ppa in 12.1014:22
bigcalmWasn't sure if it would mess up on the move14:22
penguin42what's geary?14:23
bigcalmpenguin42: thanks :)14:24
bigcalmpenguin42: it's an email client14:24
penguin42ah, how is it different from the other 2^68 email clients?14:24
funkyHatpenguin42: it's a clone of OSX's Mail.app, as far as I can tell from the screenshots14:26
funkyHatOh sorry is it a faux pas to point out when open source projects are copying Apple? ᗡ⢁14:27
bigcalmWoop. Since upgrading to 13.04, synergy is at a modern release. Which means it works with my windows server again. Which means I don't need to faff about to client licences to do RDP14:27
penguin42bigcalm: Do you get problems with Ω when you mean @?14:28
bigcalmEh?14:28
penguin42on synergy when I type @ I get a Ω on the other machine14:28
bigcalmAh14:29
MartijnVdSsounds like a keyboard layout issue14:29
bigcalmI'm waiting for the windows server to wake up14:29
MartijnVdSthough that would be a cool email address separator :)14:29
penguin42MartijnVdS: Yeh, although it's UK to UK14:29
MartijnVdSfooΩbar.com14:29
penguin42MartijnVdS: I think there would be a lot of resistence to such a change14:29
bigcalmPendulum: Ubuntu 13.04 (server) -> Windows 2010 server (client) : @ = @14:29
* penguin42 swings into bigcalm14:30
bigcalmo.O14:30
bigcalmI have had keyboard layout problems in the past though14:30
MartijnVdSpenguin42: someone in power should force it then14:30
Pendulumbigcalm: you know I love you, but somehow I don't think you meant me :P14:32
bigcalmOops :)14:32
* bigcalm tickles Pendulum 14:32
bigcalmpenguin42: ^^14:32
MartijnVdSpentium!14:33
bigcalmPeople are forever tab-confusing me and BigRedS. It's only fair that other people have to suffer ;)14:33
daftykinshappy sunday all14:37
daftykins\o14:37
bigcalmGrrr17:47
daftykinso hai17:47
popeymoo17:47
bigcalmSystem sounds are crackly in 13.04. Spotify is just fine though17:48
daftykinswhat would you guys do if you could procure a free LGA775 core 2 quad system? albeit minus a case17:48
Laneyjust bought this with me tax refund17:48
Laneyhttp://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-sullivan-chair-plain-pink/p55146417:48
daftykinsbigcalm: perhaps they're clipping at too high a volume?17:48
bigcalmdaftykins: not that kind of crackle17:48
daftykins*lost*17:49
bigcalmIt appears to sort itself out after a while of playing the audio though17:49
penguin42daftykins: Buy a case17:50
daftykinsoh yeah that'd be step 1 :)17:50
daftykinsmy file server has a pentium dual-core with no hardware VT17:50
daftykinsit'd kinda benefit from that i think, but at the same time it'd bump the power consumption :(17:51
bigcalmBest thing about all of my tweets going to Facebook - it confuses non-coders when I tweet something codish :)17:55
penguin42daftykins: What gen pentium dual is it compared to what gen Core2 quad?17:55
daftykinspenguin42: http://ark.intel.com/products/31733 vs. http://ark.intel.com/products/3079017:57
daftykins65 vs. 105W TDP17:58
daftykinsalthough my desktop is a Q6600 which is also a 65W TDP, so i could do a big juggle to make my desktop a tad nippier, server more capable for same power and have the 2GHz pentium DC free to perhaps give my parents17:59
daftykinsbut i'm also a fan of not changing what works :D17:59
penguin42daftykins: Will your quad actually fit in your pentium dual board?17:59
daftykinsyep17:59
penguin42daftykins: It might not run any hotter when it's idle or only using 1 or 2 of the 4 cores17:59
daftykins'tis true, all down to speedstep i guess18:00
daftykinsmay need a BIOS update but it'll be fine18:01
penguin42I mean 105W/quad core - maybe only ~50W with 2 cores flat out?18:02
daftykinsyeah, i could watch my UPS stats to compare18:02
daftykinshrmm, may make my downloads drive a 100% dedicated instead of OS shared too18:10

advancedgardeHello. I have a HDD with smart attribute 197 "Current Pending Sector Count" showing 65535 sectors waiting to be remapped. I've obviously backed up all data on the disk and am 99% certain that this issue was caused by a damaged SATA cable that has since been replaced. My thinking is that if a subsequent successful read to one of these suspect sectors is successful, then the flag for that sector will be cleared with22:46
directhexadvancedgarde, 65535 is a very special (i.e. unlikely to be true) number23:05
directhexadvancedgarde, seems more like a firmware bug to me23:05
advancedgardeYes, I had thought that too ^^23:09
advancedgardeBut I wasn't sure if I had just maxed that value in the hardware.23:09
directhexi had that with a disk from work. ignored it, since none of the related pre-fail values were nonzero23:10
directhexit's pretty much impossible for the pending sectors to be nonzero whilst failed sector writes is zero23:10
directhexbedtime.23:11
advancedgardeThe HDD was part of a raid 0 Storage array. The sibling drive which is of similar age is fine.23:12

daftykinsadvancedgarde: you could use the manufacturer utility to properly format it, might reset that value so you get peace of mind23:30
advancedgardedaftykins: I will defiantly give that a shot.23:31
daftykinsalso, you could confirm in multiple SMART utilities if that was just one23:32
advancedgardeI've checked a few in windows and also smartmontools and diskutility - all give the same results so I trust the utilities even if I don't trust the numbers. Do you know where I can find a formatting utility from WD? I've only been able to find one for DOS so far which can't be right, can it?23:34
daftykinsit can, often you need to avoid any OS to do things at a low level23:35
daftykinsso WD would've linked you to 'WinDLG' aka Windows Data Lifeguard Diagnostics23:35
daftykinsi was able to format a flash drive with win98 boot files to make it bootable and run the DOS version23:35
daftykinsworks a treat, although does take up your PC in the meantime :( heh23:35
daftykinsdepending on the size of disk it can take hours to properly zero23:36
advancedgardeYes I know. Thankfully I have a spare computer I'm using. In the past I've used hirens boot CD for such thing but I don't have any CD drives at my house at the moment.23:36
daftykinsah23:38
advancedgardeSo it looks as though WinDLG runs under windows, I'll boot into windows once badblocks is complete and see what I can do with that.23:38
daftykinsyeah if it's a slave drive and you don't mount the file system all should be well23:40
daftykinsjust don't be surprised if it nukes the data, :D23:40
advancedgardeYeah it's just a storage drive and I've copied everything I need from it. But a low level format will take a long time .. 2TB u_u23:42
daftykins^_^23:48
daftykinsindeed23:48
