HecticZAAfternoon :)10:30
Kiloshi HecticZA wb10:30
HecticZAThx Kilos. :)10:30
Kilosyo winning?10:30
Kilosyou10:30
Kilosmazal, ping10:31
Kilos^^10:31
HecticZANot really. I have been going through some sites that Maz recommended and I did pick up some more info. I have a couple of questions?10:31
Kilosweel if you got probs ask here and someone will help you10:32
Kiloswell10:32
Kiloswe are here to help10:32
HecticZAI downloaded the LTS and versions. I tried to put 4 on a flash drive via Unetbootin, but my pc does not want to boot with it. I then tried 13.04 on a rewritable dvd. It did boot, but with lots of errors and when it did eventually boot it was basically non responsive and I had to reboot pc. Can I test the size of the dl somewhere? I could not find the checksum on the site, I probably missed it.10:37
Kilosoh my10:38
Kiloscan you write the 12.04 to a dvd10:39
Kilosand try install that . you can come online from the live dvd and we can help you with the install10:39
HecticZAI will try a bit later. Is it okay to use a rewritable dvd?10:39
Kilossome peeps say they not to good but i dunno10:40
Kilosshould be unless its been used over and over i spose10:40
HecticZAOkay will see if I can find a normal dvd 10:40
Kiloswhere are you HecticZA 10:41
Kilosmaybe someone close has a dvd for you10:41
HecticZAI'm in a small town called Kirkwood, about 80km from PE10:41
inetproKilos: goeie more10:41
inetprogood afternoon everyone10:41
=== Trix[a]r_za is now known as Trixar_za
HecticZAHi there inetpro .10:41
Kiloshi inetpro 10:42
inetprohi HecticZA10:42
Kilosoh my goodness thats far but we might have someone in the area10:42
Kilosi dont know how windows burns isos to dvd10:43
Kilosinetpro, kan jy hom help bietjie?10:43
HecticZAIs there a way I can compare the checksum size?10:44
HecticZATelkom is a bit iffy atm and I have various download sizes10:44
Kiloslets hear from the guys. my iso downloads have all worked first time10:44
Kilosoh my10:45
Kilosi have the dvds here that i downloaded so can put one in and see what size i get10:45
HecticZAOkay thx. All my other distros worked okay, but these last 2 have been a problem, but I'm pretty sure it is a Telkom issue. 10:48
Kilosi get 832.6 meg for 13.0410:48
Kiloscant rememeber where i put the 12.04.2 iso10:50
Kiloshmm...10:50
HecticZAI also have 1 for 832.6 and others for 550 and 734MB. I did burn the 832.6, but the checksum could still be wrong.10:50
Kilos734 sounds right10:51
HecticZAI will try the LTS version a bit later10:51
HecticZAAll 3 of those were for the 13.04 version10:51
Kilosoh my10:52
Kilosyou need to rev telkom a bit10:52
kbmonkeyhello 10:52
Kiloshi kbmonkey 10:52
kbmonkeytaking a 15 minute break. yey10:53
HecticZAThey are busy with updates and have been struggling the last few weeks.10:53
Kiloseish10:53
Kilosthe lts should be 733m or a bit above if i remember right10:53
HecticZAIt is especially the Cape Town ICP that is strugeling, but at times the Rosebank one as well, so everybody is complaining atm10:54
kbmonkeyHecticZA, you should be able to use the md5sum command to compare a .iso if it downloaded correctly10:54
Kilosdid you download with a download manager10:54
inetprohmm...10:54
HecticZAMy LTS is 693 and yes I did10:54
* inetpro goes to read the backlogs10:54
Kiloshe is still on windows guys10:55
kbmonkeyyou get md5sum for windows :)10:55
HecticZAYes kbmonkey , but where do I find the correct size to compare to?10:55
HecticZAI have Windows and Linux. I'm running on Peppermint 3 atm on this pc10:56
inetprohttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM10:56
Kilosoh then you can do downloads with wget on mint10:56
inetprohttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes10:57
inetprohttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto10:58
kbmonkeyHecticZA, see http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/10:58
kbmonkeythere are md5sums on that site10:58
HecticZAThx for all the links. Busy checking them out10:58
kbmonkeyjust navigate to the version you want :)10:58
kbmonkeyso from Peppermint you can run `md5sum -c MD5SUMS` from the same directory where your iso and that MD5SUMS file live10:59
kbmonkeyit will warn you of the sums of the files you do not have, by the way11:00
Kilosif he is on peppermint he can wget "link" and wget -c to continue a broken download11:00
kbmonkeyKilos, is getting too clever!11:01
Kilosi love wget11:01
Kiloshavent had one bad iso download with it11:01
kbmonkeyalright, my break is over. bye :/11:08
Kilostoods kbmonkey 11:08
Kilosbe good11:08
HecticZAOkay it seems my LTS version checksum is correct, but the 13.04 is corrupted11:08
Kilosuse the lts11:08
HecticZAThx kbmonkey 11:08
HecticZAOkay will try it a bit later Kilos. Thx for the feedback :)11:09
Kilosyou welcome HecticZA 11:09
Kiloskeep in touch11:09
Kilossuch a schlep when internet messes around hey11:11
HecticZAI will. I'm in for the long haul. If I'm not here, it is because I'm busy with something11:11
mazalHectic my ou vriend !!11:11

HecticZASo true, but Telkom said most of the issues will be fixed after this weekends updates. Unfortunately they said that in February as well11:12

mazalEk moet eers verder werk , geniet dit hier by ons11:17
mazalThese guys know their stuff ;-)11:17
HecticZAJa wat, maar ek verkies om dinge self te laai op die stadium. Dit maak die learning curve net so bietjie beter. Ek sukkel net met die distros op die oomblik agv Telkom11:17
HecticZAThx  en cheers :)11:17
HecticZACheers guys. Must go. Kilos, I will try the LTS a bit later and come back to you. 11:18

Kilosi didnt even know there was such a thing11:36
mazalDon't laugh oom. Serious bussness that11:36
mazalRacing wheels , racing seats , pedals. Sim style software11:37
Kilosi thought you had to have handle bars or steering wheel in hand to race11:37
mazalI had a very nice setup with racing seat and wheel and pedals11:37
Kiloshehe11:37
Kilosbusiness11:38
mazalThere's clubs and leagues and all11:38
Kiloswow11:38
mazalYah11:38
mazalWe had club championships whole year round11:38
mazalAnd the telkom DO guys frequently have Do gaming leagues11:38
Kiloslol11:38

Kilosi did it the hard expensive way11:39
mazalThe virtual 24 Hour Le mans is coming up also11:39

mazalSo ya , it's for fun , but also vary serious at the same time hehehe11:42
mazalOne of our SA guys made it through to the top 100 track day in real life event last year11:42
Kilosnice11:42
mazalDunno if he actually went and how he did , I quit the "sport" before then11:43
Kilosbut kids will be tops with all that stuff11:43
mazalNope they don't make it11:43
Kilosoh my11:43
mazalGT5 is heavily sim style11:43
mazalThe cars and physics is very close to real life11:44
Kilosah some experience needed11:44
mazalThat's why you need a wheel and pedals and seat to do well11:44
mazalThe small kid's don't do to well on it11:44
Kiloswow11:44
mazalIn our SA community all were senior guys , youngest was something like 2311:45
mazalYa it's not arcade style button bashing11:45
Kiloslol thats a kid to me11:45
mazalYou actually need skill11:45
mazalAnd the regulations are very strict as well11:46

Kilosai!11:53
trenderahoy anybody alive ??12:10
Kilosya12:11
charli can't believe it i have 179MB of old kernels in my /boot12:13
charlwhat i have 699MB of old kernel sources in my /usr/src this is criminal12:15
charloh no i have 1.1GB of old kernels in /lib/modules12:16
charlthis is terrible how did ubuntu get this bloated12:16
charlplease clean up your old kernels12:16
tonberryE352you can manually uninstall them12:16
tonberryE352but I agree there should be some script or option12:16
tonberryE352keep x old kernels12:16
charlthis should be the default, only last two versions of the kernel12:16
mazalBye everyone12:17
tonberryE352you cannot reasonably expect a new ubuntu user to go and hunt down old kernel versions in a package manager12:17
trenderanybody know if those sata to ide converters are any good with new drives ?????????????#!@##$@#$!@#%$%^%^&12:18
charltonberryE352: exactly12:23
charltonberryE352: what typically happens is that old versions of the kernel accumulate in /boot and eventually fills up the boot partition12:23
charltonberryE352: the boot partition, by default, not being very large12:23
charland let's face it, there are so frequently new kernel updates, this will happen sooner than later for anyone who keeps their system up to date12:24
charltrender: new... ide drives? didn't realise they still sell ide drives12:25
tonberryE352i suspect new big sata drives will give problems if you convert to IDE12:26
trenderasking about sata to ide converters12:26
charlwait which way around12:26
charlsata to the motherboard and ide to the drive?12:26
charlthat's how i understood it12:26
trenderide on the mb sata on the drive12:26
tonberryE352i suspect old ide motherboard with new sata drives12:26
charlah i see, ok that makes more sense12:27
Kilosmethinks he is talking about putting a sata/ide adapter onto an ide socket on the motherboard12:27
trenderneed to know if those sata converters are any good for new sata drives12:27
Kilosi tried ians one on my old p4 with no sata sockets and it worked well12:28
trenderi hate throwing away money12:28
tonberryE352I am unsure what the drive size limit is on IDE12:28
tonberryE352but I doubt 2tb or 3tb would work12:28
trenderwell thats what im trying to do12:29
Kilosi put ians 2tb drive onto my ide pc12:29
charldrive size limit? why would there be a limit on the drive size?12:29
* tonberryE352 shrugs12:29
tonberryE352systems tend to have limits12:29
charli thought there were terabyte drives in the ide days12:29
charlbut yeah i never used any of them so i have no clue sorry12:30
Kilosbiggest ive seen is 500gB12:30
Kilosgoogle will know more12:30
tonberryE352I do know some ide to usb converts do not like 2tb drives12:30
ThatGraemeGuyi think IDE drives topped out at about 750GB12:30
trenderi dont want to buy 100x 3Tb drives and end up with 100 lemons that wont convert to IDE12:30
tonberryE352but that was a funny pata sata usb thingy12:30
ThatGraemeGuyand that was right at the end of IDE's life12:30
tonberryE352buy one and check12:31
trenderseems like the only way 12:31
trenderah well12:32
tonberryE352prototyping is expensive12:33
ThatGraemeGuyinteresting history lesson on the topic of size limits: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Large-Disk-HOWTO-4.html12:33
Kilostimes have changed hey12:43
Kilosi remember on win 95 i thought a 2G drive was massive12:44
ThatGraemeGuymy first PC had 2GB12:44
ThatGraemeGuyand an enormous 32MB of RAM12:45
ThatGraemeGuyin a laptop no less12:45
Kilos'lol ya12:45
Kilosmine was 420 meg i think12:45
Kilosalso 23m ram12:45
