Simply didn't have any issues yet. Apart from the ATI thing [07:35] ah [07:35] It hates ATI lol [07:35] Or ATI hates it [07:36] graphics card? [07:36] Yep [07:36] ya ubuntu seems to prefer nvidia [07:36] I found that out the hard way [07:37] Fortunate for things like imaging [07:41] ATI hates Linux [07:42] ATI and NVIDIA are very competitive over how much they hate Linux [07:44] lol [07:46] so hows tonberryE352 today [07:46] sjoe [07:48] wb magespawn [07:52] weird how weather man says we gonna be 5°c but everything is ice in the morning [07:53] have they changed how thermometers read temps [08:02] good morning [08:02] Maaz: coffee on [08:02] * Maaz flips the salt-timer [08:03] hi cvharl [08:04] charl, too [08:04] Maaz, coffee please [08:04] Kilos: Sure [08:06] Coffee's ready for charl and Kilos! [08:08] Is easy Kilos , removed ati card , installed Nvidia card [08:08] lol [08:09] I was in no way in the mood to struggle for days on end just to get the graphics working [08:09] I saw those threads , and no way , don't have the time for all that [08:09] its actually a shame [08:10] Lucky for me I always keep 1 spare of almost everything , and my spare card was nvidia [08:10] lekker [08:10] find some windows okey and swop the ati card for another nvidia card [08:10] Ya we that is so far from shops have learned to keep a spare of most important things cos we can't go and buy new one quick [08:11] ya [08:11] I just need spare wi-fi router still. Have a spare but doesn't have wi-fi [08:12] ah [08:12] I even ordered my new computer with a second hdd , but not connected. Just sitting there lol [08:12] you get wifi there? [08:12] wow [08:12] Internal in my flat I use wi-fi [08:12] For my ps3's [08:12] ah [08:13] So in emergency my pc wil work , but not my ps3's [08:13] I watch cartoons and docies in them using the ps as media server [08:14] ah [08:14] Ish what is that replace thing again ? [10:30] you [10:31] mazal, ping [10:31] ^^ [10:31] Not really. I have been going through some sites that Maz recommended and I did pick up some more info. I have a couple of questions? [10:32] weel if you got probs ask here and someone will help you [10:32] well [10:32] we are here to help [10:37] I downloaded the LTS and versions. I tried to put 4 on a flash drive via Unetbootin, but my pc does not want to boot with it. I then tried 13.04 on a rewritable dvd. It did boot, but with lots of errors and when it did eventually boot it was basically non responsive and I had to reboot pc. Can I test the size of the dl somewhere? I could not find the checksum on the site, I probably missed it. [10:38] oh my [10:39] can you write the 12.04 to a dvd [10:39] and try install that . you can come online from the live dvd and we can help you with the install [10:39] I will try a bit later. Is it okay to use a rewritable dvd? [10:40] some peeps say they not to good but i dunno [10:40] should be unless its been used over and over i spose [10:40] Okay will see if I can find a normal dvd [10:41] where are you HecticZA [10:41] maybe someone close has a dvd for you [10:41] I'm in a small town called Kirkwood, about 80km from PE [10:41] Kilos: goeie more [10:41] good afternoon everyone === Trix[a]r_za is now known as Trixar_za [10:41] Hi there inetpro . [10:42] hi inetpro [10:42] hi HecticZA [10:42] oh my goodness thats far but we might have someone in the area [10:43] i dont know how windows burns isos to dvd [10:43] inetpro, kan jy hom help bietjie? [10:44] Is there a way I can compare the checksum size? [10:44] Telkom is a bit iffy atm and I have various download sizes [10:44] lets hear from the guys. my iso downloads have all worked first time [10:45] oh my [10:45] i have the dvds here that i downloaded so can put one in and see what size i get [10:48] Okay thx. All my other distros worked okay, but these last 2 have been a problem, but I'm pretty sure it is a Telkom issue. [10:48] i get 832.6 meg for 13.04 [10:50] cant rememeber where i put the 12.04.2 iso [10:50] hmm... [10:50] I also have 1 for 832.6 and others for 550 and 734MB. I did burn the 832.6, but the checksum could still be wrong. [10:51] 734 sounds right [10:51] I will try the LTS version a bit later [10:51] All 3 of those were for the 13.04 version [10:52] oh my [10:52] you need to rev telkom a bit [10:52] hello [10:52] hi kbmonkey [10:53] taking a 15 minute break. yey [10:53] They are busy with updates and have been struggling the last few weeks. [10:53] eish [10:53] the lts should be 733m or a bit above if i remember right [10:54] It is especially the Cape Town ICP that is strugeling, but at times the Rosebank one as well, so everybody is complaining atm [10:54] HecticZA, you should be able to use the md5sum command to compare a .iso if it downloaded correctly [10:54] did you download with a download manager [10:54] hmm... [10:54] My LTS is 693 and yes I did [10:54] * inetpro goes to read the backlogs [10:55] he is still on windows guys [10:55] you get md5sum for windows :) [10:55] Yes kbmonkey , but where do I find the correct size to compare to? [10:56] I have Windows and Linux. I'm running on Peppermint 3 atm on this pc [10:56] https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM [10:56] oh then you can do downloads with wget on mint [10:57] https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes [10:58] https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto [10:58] HecticZA, see http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ [10:58] there are md5sums on that site [10:58] Thx for all the links. Busy checking them out [10:58] just navigate to the version you want :) [10:59] so from Peppermint you can run `md5sum -c MD5SUMS` from the same directory where your iso and that MD5SUMS file live [11:00] it will warn you of the sums of the files you do not have, by the way [11:00] if he is on peppermint he can wget "link" and wget -c to continue a broken download [11:01] Kilos, is getting too clever! [11:01] i love wget [11:01] havent had one bad iso download with it [11:08] alright, my break is over. bye :/ [11:08] toods kbmonkey [11:08] be good [11:08] Okay it seems my LTS version checksum is correct, but the 13.04 is corrupted [11:08] use the lts [11:08] Thx kbmonkey [11:09] Okay will try it a bit later Kilos. Thx for the feedback :) [11:09] you welcome HecticZA [11:09] keep in touch [11:11] such a schlep when internet messes around hey [11:11] I will. I'm in for the long haul. If I'm not here, it is because I'm busy with something [11:11] Hectic my ou vriend !! [11:11] cool [11:12] So true, but Telkom said most of the issues will be fixed after this weekends updates. Unfortunately they said that in February as well [11:12] Hey MAz :D [11:12] Welcome :-) [11:12] Hoe gaan dit ? [11:12] Dankie man :) [11:12] Goed dankie [11:13] en die rug? [11:13] Baie goed , so 90% reg [11:13] Goed om te hoor :) [11:13] Lus om een aand a race te join , maar ai [11:14] besig besig besig [11:14] Ag almal is nou moeg jong. GT6 moet kom [11:15] HecticZA, where you live ? [11:15] Kirkwood, naby PE [11:15] Plaas dorpie. Must go. Kilos, I will try the LTS a bit later and come back to you. [11:18] cheers HecticZA good luck [11:19] eish poor guy [11:21] i heard more people are having trouble with telkom [11:22] yeah weird [11:22] my mom phoned them various times and got someone on the phone who told her she's over her "cap" because she downloaded more than 3GB [11:22] my 8ta keeps going [11:22] but she's on uncapped so that's nonsense [11:22] eish [11:22] after 5+ times of phoning she got some person on the line with half a clue [11:22] he said a server went down and since then they are having troubles [11:23] how extremely and utterly incompetent are these people? [11:23] they just slow at the moment because as they say they are upgrading [11:23] bull**** [11:23] can take 6 months to a year they told me [11:23] i mailed them [11:24] 8ta Social [11:24] the incompetence is so immense it's beyond saving [11:24] yip [11:24] also govt dept [11:24] pay peanuts get monkeys [11:24] yeah that too [11:27] dankie vir die lienks inetpro [11:27] lienke [11:27] daai goed [11:30] Kilos: np [11:32] Kilos: lekker om nog 'n plaasmens hier te sien [11:32] ya man baie grand [11:33] en iemand wat moeg is vir die ander OS [11:33] daar is baie van hulle [11:33] ons weet net nie van hulle almal nie [11:33] ons moet miskien bietjie adverteer [11:34] advertise [11:34] everything look wrong today [11:34] advertensies is duur man [11:34] mors van geld [11:34] nee man online goed [11:35] You guys have no idea how many years it took me to try and convince him hehehe [11:35] well done mazal [11:35] mazal: cool [11:35] His a great guy , been racing with him for a long time [11:35] most of our new peeps are word of mouth peeps [11:35] racing what? [11:36] Online racing , I use to race in competitions. Mostly GT5 on PS3 [11:36] haha [11:36] i didnt even know there was such a thing [11:36] Don't laugh oom. Serious bussness that [11:37] Racing wheels , racing seats , pedals. Sim style software [11:37] i thought you had to have handle bars or steering wheel in hand to race [11:37] I had a very nice setup with racing seat and wheel and pedals [11:37] hehe [11:38] business [11:38] There's clubs and leagues and all [11:38] wow [11:38] Yah [11:38] We had club championships whole year round [11:38] And the telkom DO guys frequently have Do gaming leagues [11:38] lol [11:38] new world [11:39] i did it the hard expensive way [11:39] The virtual 24 Hour Le mans is coming up also [11:39] wow [11:39] Guys from all over doing the 24 hour Le Mans virtually. Teams and all and all [11:40] i want an audi turbo diesel for that [11:40] And PD ( GT5 manufacturer ) runs their own league every year [11:40] whew [11:40] And the top few guys in each country get's invited to track days in real life [11:40] Top 3 there get's offered real racing contracts [11:40] great [11:40] And wins a car like the new AMG [11:41] wow [11:41] big bucks that [11:41] There is 3 ex-gt5 boys racing in real life now in various leagues in the world [11:41] amg=mercedes hey [11:41] Yep [11:42] So ya , it's for fun , but also vary serious at the same time hehehe [11:42] One of our SA guys made it through to the top 100 track day in real life event last year [11:42] nice [11:43] Dunno if he actually went and how he did , I quit the "sport" before then [11:43] but kids will be tops with all that stuff [11:43] Nope they don't make it [11:43] oh my [11:43] GT5 is heavily sim style [11:44] The cars and physics is very close to real life [11:44] ah some experience needed [11:44] That's why you need a wheel and pedals and seat to do well [11:44] The small kid's don't do to well on it [11:44] wow [11:45] In our SA community all were senior guys , youngest was something like 23 [11:45] Ya it's not arcade style button bashing [11:45] lol thats a kid to me [11:45] You actually need skill [11:46] And the regulations are very strict as well [11:47] hmm [11:49] closest i got to motor sport on a pc was playing sbk [11:49] hey peeps [11:49] hi ThatGraemeGuy [11:50] all good that side? [11:50] good ty [11:50] not really its winter here [11:50] only summer is really good [11:52] yeah cooling down and sky turning gloomy down here again [11:53] ai! [12:10] ahoy anybody alive ?? [12:11] ya [12:13] i can't believe it i have 179MB of old kernels in my /boot [12:15] what i have 699MB of old kernel sources in my /usr/src this is criminal [12:16] oh no i have 1.1GB of old kernels in /lib/modules [12:16] this is terrible how did ubuntu get this bloated [12:16] please clean up your old kernels [12:16] you can manually uninstall them [12:16] but I agree there should be some script or option [12:16] keep x old kernels [12:16] this should be the default, only last two versions of the kernel [12:17] Bye everyone [12:17] you cannot reasonably expect a new ubuntu user to go and hunt down old kernel versions in a package manager [12:18] anybody know if those sata to ide converters are any good with new drives ?????????????#!@##$@#$!@#%$%^%^& [12:23] tonberryE352: exactly [12:23] tonberryE352: what typically happens is that old versions of the kernel accumulate in /boot and eventually fills up the boot partition [12:23] tonberryE352: the boot partition, by default, not being very large [12:24] and let's face it, there are so frequently new kernel updates, this will happen sooner than later for anyone who keeps their system up to date [12:25] trender: new... ide drives? didn't realise they still sell ide drives [12:26] i suspect new big sata drives will give problems if you convert to IDE [12:26] asking about sata to ide converters [12:26] wait which way around [12:26] sata to the motherboard and ide to the drive? [12:26] that's how i understood it [12:26] ide on the mb sata on the drive [12:26] i suspect old ide motherboard with new sata drives [12:27] ah i see, ok that makes more sense [12:27] methinks he is talking about putting a sata/ide adapter onto an ide socket on the motherboard [12:27] need to know if those sata converters are any good for new sata drives [12:28] i tried ians one on my old p4 with no sata sockets and it worked well [12:28] i hate throwing away money [12:28] I am unsure what the drive size limit is on IDE [12:28] but I doubt 2tb or 3tb would work [12:29] well thats what im trying to do [12:29] i put ians 2tb drive onto my ide pc [12:29] drive size limit? why would there be a limit on the drive size? [12:29] * tonberryE352 shrugs [12:29] systems tend to have limits [12:29] i thought there were terabyte drives in the ide days [12:30] but yeah i never used any of them so i have no clue sorry [12:30] biggest ive seen is 500gB [12:30] google will know more [12:30] I do know some ide to usb converts do not like 2tb drives [12:30] i think IDE drives topped out at about 750GB [12:30] i dont want to buy 100x 3Tb drives and end up with 100 lemons that wont convert to IDE [12:30] but that was a funny pata sata usb thingy [12:30] and that was right at the end of IDE's life [12:31] buy one and check [12:31] seems like the only way [12:32] ah well [12:33] prototyping is expensive [12:33] interesting history lesson on the topic of size limits: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Large-Disk-HOWTO-4.html [12:43] times have changed hey [12:44] i remember on win 95 i thought a 2G drive was massive [12:44] my first PC had 2GB [12:45] and an enormous 32MB of RAM [12:45] in a laptop no less [12:45] 'lol ya [12:45] mine was 420 meg i think [12:45] also 23m ram [12:45] 32 [12:46] now 1.5g of ram is too min [12:50] hi [12:50] hi Squirm === Trixar_za is now known as Trix[a]r_za [13:27] afternoon all [13:27] hi magespawn [13:28] trender i have that the converters work but there is a serious loss of performance [13:29] ^found [13:31] ciao all [13:35] thanks performance is no concern to me it just needs to work === Trix[a]r_za is now known as Trixar_za [15:27] good night all === Trixar_za is now known as Trix[a]r_za === Trix[a]r_za is now known as Trixar_za [16:31] good evening, oom Kilos :p [16:32] hi Cantide [17:07] hi psychicist [17:24] hi Kilos [17:52] ehlo [17:53] hiya inetpro [17:53] koud ne [17:53] baie [18:09] hi inetpro [18:16] hi psychicist [18:17] * inetpro crying [18:17] why [18:17] need to go for a long trip this weekend and one of my tyres has a small bubble [18:18] brand new tyre that the previous owner put in for me [18:18] tyres* [18:18] eish [18:18] hit a bad pothole [18:18] have a gator put in [18:18] now I'm worried to drive long distance like this [18:19] its a thick patch they stick inside [18:19] hmm... sounds like a cool idea [18:19] all my ideas are cool [18:20] will go to the tyre place tomorrow [18:20] hehe [18:20] damn tyres are expensive these days [18:20] you will see the gator is thick and strong [18:20] just need to balance that wheel after [18:20] what isnt [18:21] thing is my wife went there this week and they said they can't fix it [18:22] but you still riding it like that [18:22] then it must be able to take a gator [18:23] well the bubble is not big but it's there, on the side wall [18:23] must work with a gator in [18:25] i did that often [18:32] thanks Kilos, you make me feel lots better [18:32] let's hope they fix it with a gator for me [18:32] good [18:32] tyres cost big buck [18:32] s [18:33] these tyres the guy put on are like the most expensive that you can get [18:33] don't think I will be able to sustain that [18:34] Copper Discoverer [18:34] Cooper* [18:34] 4x4 tyres [18:35] ai!
