karen_hi, I HAD some pics on my camera and plugged them into my computer, xubuntu, of which I'm new at. I couldn't transfer them over to the computer for some reason even though the computer said it was plugged in. Now, my camera isn't showing any pics at all even when I tried to take one a minute ago. So, normally, I guess, on the left side in "home", it would say I had something there, but when I went to look, it didn't show anything. Maybe00:22
karen_ my camera did something weird. What do you think? I have been talking on the "Ubuntu" channel, but they couldn't help me.00:22
w30nagev, ahh, my bad; I forgot to clear text.00:36
w0lfsenHello, I have installed Xubutu just now and I cannot get the sound running. Intel onboard HDA soundcard. ALSA mixer is all high up. Had the same problem with ubutu. :(. Help would be greatly appreciated!00:46
SonikkuAmericaw0lfsen: Xubuntu doesn't use ALSA; it uses PulseAudio.00:47
w0lfsenSonikkuAmerica, oh okay. So how do I start that? Sorry first time linux user00:50
SonikkuAmericaw0lfsen: It should be started with lightdm-gtk-greeter (the login screen)00:51
SonikkuAmericaw0lfsen: But head for Settings Manager and see if anything is in there that says "Sound"00:51
dunpealUnit193: cool, thanks.00:52
w0lfsenSonikkuAmerica, interesting, there is no sound option. But I can click on the sound icon in the upper right corner00:53
SonikkuAmericaw0lfsen: There should be a "Sound Settings" menu item under that icon00:53
w0lfsenSonikkuAmerica, yeah, and I have see it before when I installed xubuntu the first time. Now, it is gone. Very weird00:55
w0lfsenbut I can click on sound setting through the icon on top of the screen00:55
w0lfsenSonikkuAmerica, this is my sound card btw: Conexant CX2058800:56

w0lfsenSonikkuAmerica, Thanks for your help! Greatly appreciated. Love how Xubuntu looks and would like to switch permanently to it! But without sound and such...01:05
SonikkuAmericaw0lfsen: Hope you enjoy it! Hmm... It seems that a certain C header is missing for your kernel.01:05
SonikkuAmerica!kernel01:05
ubottuThe core of Ubuntu is the Linux kernel: see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel - You shouldn't have to compile your own, and if you need to troubleshoot issues, you can try a !Mainline kernel instead, but if you insist, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel/Compile (see also !Stages)01:05
SonikkuAmericaThere's not really a reason to compile a kernel though, but I'm surprised that they didn't update this C header correctly.01:06
w0lfsenSonikkuAmerica, okay what are my options now?01:07
SonikkuAmericaYou might try filing a bug on Launchpad (http://launchpad.net), or searching "xubuntu conexant" on Google or your fav search engine.01:07

xubuntu195Hello, I am using xubuntu 12.10 and when i start my computer it does not boot. I have to switch it off from the button, and when I turn it on again, the second time it boots ok? What is the problem and what do I have to do? Thanks08:39
TheSheepwhat is the error?08:42
xubuntu195the error is that i always have to switch on my pc two times otherwise it does not start08:52
Noskcajxubuntu195, that seems to be a hardware or bios issue, not a xubuntu issue08:53
TheSheepxubuntu195: but what it is the error message that you have displayed when it fails to boot?08:54
xubuntu195Thank you <Noskcaj> and <the sheep> for your answers. There is no error message, the first time when I switch it on, it is loading for a few seconds and then it stops with black screen. No message or anything...Then I  turn it off and the second time, everything is ok within a few seconds. The same problem appears on two laptops with xubuntu 12.10, so I do not thin its a bios or a hardware problem..08:57
TheSheepxubuntu195: without any message it's hard to tell what may be happening08:58
Noskcajxubuntu195, strange. does the laptop POST?08:58
xubuntu195<Noskcaj> what do you mean POST?09:00
Noskcajxubuntu195, Power-On Self Test. all PCs run this as they first turn on. A screen with the manufacturer's logo or some text appears if it is successful.09:01

MikeHauk53I am trying to install Xubuntu and have the torrent file downloaded. What I do with it?13:15
acerimmer!md5sum|MikeHauk53,13:16
ubottuMikeHauk53,: To verify your Ubuntu ISO image (or other files for which an MD5 checksum is provided), see http://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM or http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/answers/LQ_ISO/Checking_the_md5sum_in_Windows13:16
acerimmerMikeHauk53, first check that you got a got torrent as per the instructions above.  Then make a usb or cdrom with startup disk creator or some other tool.13:16
MikeHauk53With the torrent on it?13:17
acerimmerMikeHauk53, the torrent should have downloaded an ISO file.  THAT's the file you'll be working with form here on ... NOT the "torrent".  torrent is only the method used to obtain the iso.13:18
MikeHauk53Okay, thanks13:19

ChevyCowboy15hello14:01
bgardnerChevyCowboy15: Welcome14:01
ChevyCowboy15thank you14:02
DistrotGreetings! Has anybody found some apps (Firefox, Chrome, etc.) to be unstable in Xubuntu, or is it just me?14:02
ChevyCowboy15thats what i was about to ask14:02
DistrotReally? lol14:03
ChevyCowboy15my vmware stopped working after the update this morning14:03
bgardnerDistrot: Nope, I run Xubuntu for my day job and it's nothing but stable.  What kind of issue are you having?14:03
DistrotI'll have Firefox or Chromium open, not doing anything special and they'll suddenly crash.14:03
DistrotOr I'll have Software Center open and it will also crash.14:04
ChevyCowboy15im having unusually slow logins with apps through errors14:04
DistrotThe crash reports also seem to crash (apport?)14:04
bgardnerNothing like that on my end, no.  Any clues in your logs?14:05
DistrotLike I said, the reports also spurn more crashes, so I can't really get more info unfortunately.14:06
ChevyCowboy15im searching through mine now14:06
DistrotJust wondering if it is a relatively common issue.14:06
DistrotWhich it seems to be, lol.14:06
bgardnerDistrot: Well, that's relative.14:06
DistrotAlbeit with variation.14:06
DistrotI'm just at the point where I want to like Xubuntu, but it's making it difficult.14:07
bgardnerDistrot: As with anything your own experiences may vary, but I am completely satisfied with the stability of Xubuntu.14:08
DistrotI understand that. Just wonder why it has to be me, lol.14:08
bgardnerDistrot: Did you move from one of the other *buntu flavors and are now experiencing problems?14:08
bgardnerDistrot: And can you give us anything else to help you besides "crashes" - any messages, behaviors or anything?14:09
DistrotWell, not really. I have Ubuntu on a few other machines; I've tried Linux Mint on a machine; and have generally used a few other distros, but I wouldn't say I've "moved".14:09
bgardnerDistrot: I'm only talking about the specific machine you are having issues with.  I'm trying to find out if you have had anything happen that might have contributed to your issue.14:10
bgardnerDistrot: It's relatively common, as in my own case, to install Ubuntu and then switch that installation to Xubuntu, for example.14:11
DistrotOh, I see. This machine has had Ubuntu on it, yes.14:11
DistrotI tried Xubuntu since I am trying to make this an HTPC.14:11
DistrotRunning XBMC14:11
DistrotI figured a lighter (hopefully stable) OS would be appropriate for this relatively lower-end machine.14:12
bgardnerDistrot: And did you have problems with Firefox crashing under Ubuntu?  Or did you not spend time trying that out before switching?14:12
bgardnerDistrot: Also, you said "Firefox, Chrome, etc" - what do you mean when you say "etc"?  What other apps are giving you trouble?14:13
DistrotOh, I spent the time, lol. There were few crashes in Ubuntu, but there were some - mostly with Software Center. I attributed this somewhat to the relatively sluggish performance though, and thus tried Xubuntu which performs quite well in terms of speed.14:13
DistrotUbuntu Software Center, XBMC has crashed once (so far), and that's about it. I don't use much else on this machine, but the few things I use I would like to be reliable.14:14
DistrotI also use Transmission (sparingly) and Teamviewer, but not as frequently as the browser or XBMC.14:14
bgardnerDistrot: Any other clues you can give?  What exactly is the message you get at the time of the crash?  Is the message *identical* between the one for Firefox and the one for Chrome?14:15
DistrotHmm, let me see if I can jog my memory. One sec, por favor.14:15
bgardnerChevyCowboy15: "vmware stopped working" - what message are you getting?  I use VirtualBox myself so I may be less useful to you than others, but I can try.14:17
ChevyCowboy15hold on ill run it again and get the message14:17
ChevyCowboy15http://paste.ubuntu.com/5786892/14:19
DistrotHmm, well, Chromium's crash simply attributed the problem as a bug derived from the source of the executable (usr/lib...chromium)14:20
DistrotI would give more info, but I think Mousepad is about to crash... lol.14:23
ChevyCowboy15ok my vmware problem is due to the mesa-libGL updates this morning14:24
bgardnerChevyCowboy15: You found something?14:25
DistrotAbout to run those updates myself.14:25
DistrotMousepad still being obstinate.14:25
bgardnerDistrot: Do you have any specific logs or errors yet?  It's super hard to debug from just the phrase "<application> keeps crashing"14:25
ChevyCowboy15yeah in the logs there is something about function (NULL) error in the mesa/libGL.so14:26
ChevyCowboy15and i updated like 4 libgl1-mesa files14:27
ChevyCowboy15so thats got to be it for the vmware14:27
ChevyCowboy15i dont know what to do about it but atleast now i know that problem14:28
DistrotTrying to open crash log in AbiWord.14:28
bgardnerChevyCowboy15: You make me nervous, I have not yet installed those yet.14:28
ChevyCowboy15lol sorry14:28
DistrotI just installed them and Firefox is still running, so (doesn't mean anything but...) lol.14:28
ChevyCowboy15im not having problems with google chrome <---- just wanted to throw that out there14:29
ChevyCowboy15now if i can just figure out the slow login stuff14:29
DistrotOK so I got the Apport crash log open in AbiWord and it says "Title: apport-gtk crashed with OSError in _read_eof(): CRC check failed 0x603aa2831= 0x4766b9f514:30
bgardnerChevyCowboy15, Distrot: I don't think your two issues are related at all.  I haven't heard anything yet that would lead me to believe they have anything in common.14:30
bgardnerChevyCowboy15: Slow login like long pause of quite system, or do you have thrashing?14:30
DistrotI don't think so either.14:31
bgardnerDistrot: That's not good.  paste.ubuntu.com your dmesg output.14:31
DistrotMy logins are remarkably fast. I don't think this machine has ever booted this quickly in its life.14:31
bgardner*quiet system14:31
ChevyCowboy15when i input password and enter.... i have original background and mouse movement for literally 5 min before anything bars pop up14:31
DistrotOk is AbiWord problematic as well? I:ve never used it, but it's stuck at 81% trying to open this crash report....14:32
DistrotIt's slowing down my entire system right now.14:32
bgardnerChevyCowboy15: Sounds like timeouts to me.  Search your dmesg/logs for name resolution errors or other timeouts.14:32
bgardnerDistrot: It sounds to me like your HDD has issues.  Which would account for all of your symptoms.14:32
DistrotMy Swap is at 99%14:32
bgardnerDistrot: Also a bad sign.14:33
DistrotI ran tests on the HDD and they passed though. I mean, that doesn't rule the HDD out, it just makes it unlikely as the sole culprit.14:33
bgardnerDistrot: Try: 'dmesg | pastebinit', and paste the resulting URL here14:33
DistrotOkee doke, one sec, por favor.14:34
DistrotLol... it's frozen.14:34
ChevyCowboy15http://paste.ubuntu.com/5786939/14:34
DistrotLet me try closing some apps... if it lets me.14:35
DistrotI might have to do a cold shutdown...14:36
DistrotThe Task Manager I had open says CPU: 100% Memory: 90% Swap: 100% and hasn't changed in sometime (could be frozen as well)14:37
DistrotAlright, I'm going to restart. I think I've wasted enough of your time with useless information.14:38
bgardnerDistrot: Go ahead, would have helped a lot to see dmesg before rebooting, but it sounds like it will refill to me.14:39
DistrotSorry, I'm not sure when the system would have loosened up to the point where it would have... whoa...14:39
DistrotNo python boot menu and some crash related messages at start up, but it booted xfce fine...14:40
bgardnerChevyCowboy15: Still looks to implicate VMware14:40
ChevyCowboy15yeah thats kind of what i was thinking14:40
ChevyCowboy15i think on the login it gets hung on some vmware process14:40
bgardnerChevyCowboy15: Your big pause is followed by VMWare messages.  Do you have VMWare-specific logs?14:40
bgardnerChevyCowboy15: Agreed.  You might see if there is a VMWare IRC on freenode.  I'm sure they would be more helpful than I am.14:41
bgardnerDistrot: As soon as you reasonably can, do 'dmesg | pastebinit'14:41
Distrothttp://paste.ubuntu.com/5786955/14:41
ChevyCowboy15thanks for the help isolating my problem14:44
bgardnerChevyCowboy15: Certainly, good luck with it!14:45
tabsterleirHey all, I have a small issue with Xubuntu 13.04 x64. I've fixed my video tearing on screen 1 with this http://www.webupd8.org/2012/10/xfce-sync-to-vblank-support-for-xfwm.html and I extend my display using arandr to a HDMI monitor. Unfortunately vsync doesn't seem to work on screen 2. Any ideas on how to fix it?14:45
DistrotChevyCowboy15: I honestly don't know much about this, but you mind telling me which video drivers you have currently in use?14:45
bgardnerDistrot: Leave a terminal ready to do 'dmesg | tail -n 100 | pastebinit'.  With that standing by, open a couple applications until someone weirds out and crashes.  Then go hit enter on that command.14:46
DistrotOops, nvm.14:46
DistrotOk, one sec.14:46
DistrotHmm, that's weird, lol. XBMC won't start.14:47
DistrotJust a black screen.14:48
DistrotNo HDD activity, no response to window switching/app quitting...14:48
bgardnerDistrot: Pretty sure you have a pervasive hardware issue that is causing all of these unrelated issues.14:49
DistrotI mean, I've done some pretty extensive testing though...14:50
DistrotYou're thinking HDD?14:50
DistrotI'm going to restart again.14:50
bgardnerDistrot: Probably HDD, yes.  Let me put it this way: I've seen this happen to me in the past, and every time it's a controller, motherboard, ratty memory chip or (most often) a dying HDD.14:51
bgardnerDistrot: You've named 5 different apps that crashed, then described a system that hung twice inside half an hour, plus a swap consumption of 99%.  Yeah, I'm thinking hardware.14:53
DistrotWell, I already isolated a bad memory stick and removed it... I ran some HDD tests with UBCD, and it came up with no errors, so. I don't know exactly what is left to isolate at this point except motherboard (which you can't really...) or a controller, like you said.14:53
DistrotThe wallpaper didn't load when I booted this time... lol... wth.14:53
DistrotShould I even bother progress this diagnostic any further?14:55
bgardnerDistrot: I'd boot a Live USB and surface-scan the HDD, if it were me.14:56
bgardnerDistrot: Then do a memtest.14:56
DistrotSurface-scan?14:56
bgardnerbadblocks14:57
bgardnerOr fsck -c -c /dev/devicename14:57
DistrotWhat would you use to do it though?14:57

DistrotHey bgardner, you still there?15:58
bgardnerDistrot: I am15:58
DistrotHey, sorry to bother again.15:58
DistrotI ran fsck and it came back clean.15:59
bgardnerDistrot: Did you include the -c -c parameters like I mentioned?15:59
DistrotAlso ran memtest and it also found nothing.15:59
DistrotNo actually, I had to look up how to do it here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1518426&page=416:00
DistrotThe live CD was telling me the drive was currently in use and I wasn't sure why it wouldn't run it since I had "umount"ed it.16:00
DistrotSo I tried looking it up and forgot about your -c -c suggestion.16:01
bgardnerDistrot: Hm.  Yes, the Live CD pretty aggressively mounts the partitions it sees.16:01
bgardnerDistrot: Well, without those options it would skip the surface test, which is faster and usually will be fine but in your case I would say it really is recommended.16:02
DistrotDespite my dismounting the drive, it wouldn't fsck it unless I did it by partition.16:02
bgardnerDistrot: "Did it by partition" ?16:02
DistrotI could run fsck by partition, so "/dev/sda1" or "/dev/sda2" or "/dev/sda5"16:03
bgardnerDistrot: In a Live CD environment and at a terminal do 'sudo umount /dev/sda1' followed by 'sudo e2fsck -f -c -c /dev/sda1'.  That should dismount the partition so you can check it.  Repeat the two commands for each of your partitions.16:07
bgardnerDistrot: How large are the partitions?16:07
DistrotPersonally, I didn't partition the drive, so I think it's set to some default values but I'll give you an actual number in a sec.16:08
bgardnerDistrot: A while back you said you replaced a memory stick.  Did you do that after you installed Xubuntu, or before?16:09
DistrotI didn't replace one, I just removed one. But, I think I've reinstalled twice or so since then, so I don't think it matters, lol.16:15
DistrotIt says my /dev/sda1 isn't mounted16:16
bgardnerDistrot: Then move to the e2fsck line for /dev/sda1 before the live CD mounts it on you.  :P16:18
DistrotOk, sorry, lol.16:19
DistrotOk, it's running.16:20
Distrot*phew* lol16:20
DistrotI'm actually hoping it finds something.16:20
DistrotI just want something tangible to blame, lol.16:20
DistrotDoes it usually take a long time?16:23
bgardnerDistrot: Depends on the size of the partition, but a surface scan definitely can take a while.16:24

nikolamfacebook and pages with large amount of pictures are killers. Also, it seems like it is not releaseing all possible RAM when closing tabs or something17:27
bazhangit's surprising it runs at all17:27
nikolamon that one with 768/swap I can manage to kill it and it behaves like that after long sufr and many tabs. On 512/no swap, even 3-4 tabs can choke it.17:28
toraxI'd use midori or luakit17:28
bazhangand lubuntu17:28
nikolamxubuntu uses just 140MB on boot to xfce here.17:28
nikolammust also have something to do with talks about mozilla is leaking RAM. but it IS surprise, one can loose control over desktop/computer because of an App using all RAM and CPU17:29
bazhangnot really17:30
bazhangbeing able to boot is far different from being able to reasonably  use a computer system17:31
nikolammust be something with linux overcommiting ram. I would feel better if APP would say: "no more ram".17:31
nikolamand linux would say: thats it, no more for you.17:31
bazhangor you expect way too much from such a minimal ram system17:31
nikolambazhang, well,. I gess using firefox in 512MB ram was the thing I would always say: it should work.17:32
nikolambut...17:32
bazhangeven One Gigabyte is going to be slow17:33
bazhangtry lxde/openbox and a different browser17:33
nikolamok bazhang17:33
bazhanglubuntu-desktop17:33
toraxfirefox will hog memory, no matter what desktop17:39
bazhangI have 4 gig, and it sometimes crawls even with that17:39
nikolambazhang, on 64bit or on 32bit17:40
bazhangthat wont make a difference nikolam17:40
bazhangeverything is PAE these days17:40
bazhang!pae17:41
ubottuTo use more than ~3.2GB RAM on a 32bit system you can install the PAE-enabled kernel. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnablingPAE for more info17:41
bazhangyeah thats outdated17:41
mr_christorax, Lately I've found it's been pretty good about memory.17:42
mr_chrisBeen running it for days on end and am only at a little over 600 MB.17:42
nikolamI also found this: /etc/sysctl.conf  vm.overcommit_memory = 2 vm.overcommit_ratio = 80  Turns off overcommiting RAM (so that application does not "think" there is more RAM then actually is)17:42
mr_chrisOf course, I use noscript. If I remember correctly, the memory leak problems from days of old were due to problems with JavaScript.17:43
nikolamwill try also that, and report back17:43
nikolamof course, noscript and flashblock are a must on any system I use.17:43
nikolambazhang, it is also troublesome to me that ubuntu is installing both regular and PAE kernel, and17:46
nikolambut nevermind.17:46
nikolam(if mchine can have 2G memory max anyway, it don't need PAE)17:47
nikolamwell nice, with that vm.overcommitratio things, xfce feezes on log-in17:57
goddardfor some reason i can't access anything outside19:16
xubuntu232Im trying to install Xubuntu 13.04 onto a new 64GB USB thumb drive, it's the only drive in my system at the moment. It seems to be hung while trying to create an ext4 file system on the drive. Any ideas what to do???19:17
goddardbut i can request data from my computer after setting a static ip19:17
goddardis there some additional step i should set up?19:17
bgardnergoddard: Do you have a DHCP server on your network?19:17
goddardbgardner: yes19:18
bgardnergoddard: Can you ping IP addresses on the internet?19:18
xubuntu232I can't copy and paste the output from the errer that has additional details.19:18
goddardbgardner: nope19:19
goddardbgardner: but i can ssh to the box using the static ip and I can also access it via port 8019:19
goddardbgardner: i have another system using ubuntu-server and it has the same network interfaces file except the static ip is different of course19:20
goddardbgardner: it can ping google.com19:20
bgardnergoddard: Did you set a default route on the new box?19:20
bgardnergoddard: Put another way, what is your gateway?19:21
goddardbgardner: i set the gateway the same on both boxes19:22
bgardnergoddard: And can the box with the issue ping the gateway?19:22
goddardbgardner: yep19:23
bgardnerOkay, can you ping your ISP's DNS server?19:23
bgardnergoddard: ^19:24
goddardbgardner: yep19:24
bgardnergoddard: Can you ping 74.125.225.208?19:25
goddardyep19:25
goddard:D19:28
bgardnergoddard: What is the output of 'host www.google.com'?19:30
goddardbgardner: no servers could be reached19:43
bgardnergoddard: Is this an ubuntu desktop or server?19:43
goddardbgardner: its xubuntu19:46
bgardnergoddard: Ok, then could you do 'nm-tool | pastebinit' and give us the URL?19:46
goddardbgardner: http://pastebin.com/DKGm4ad219:49
bgardnergoddard: Oh.  Allright, then how about 'cat /etc/network/interfaces | pastebinit' instead?19:50
bgardnergoddard: Still with us?19:55
