[07:03] he installed 12.04 but whole 2tb second drive is now empty [07:04] ouch [07:04] he said it has/had lots of data on [07:04] did he try to recover it? [07:04] we were looking for options last night [07:05] disk utility sees it as empty [07:05] wb nlsthzn [07:05] last resort will be data recovery [07:06] my keabord works again after setting it to the right type :p [07:06] i think that fsck command will sort him though [07:06] lol [07:06] asrab keyboard [07:06] arab as well [07:06] let me go scroll quickly [07:06] HecticZA Kilos? I must just add that I took it out and connected to the Windows system and the partition is gone. I do not have sufficient space to recover the data. [09:29] open a terminal and copy paste this there [09:30] we can fix it im sure [09:30] but am willing to try anything [09:30] k [09:30] is there data there you need to save [09:30] put the drive back first [09:31] would like to yes, but i buggered it somehow, so would not cry too many tears [09:31] I have [09:31] always remember to diconnect other drives power cord when installing [09:31] we can save it im sure [09:32] k:) [09:36] ubuntu has great recovery tools [09:36] ? [09:36] is the drive back? [09:36] yes [09:36] open terminal [09:37] ready [09:37] copy paste [09:37] sudo fsck -f /dev/sdb1 [09:38] Im on a netbook here. let me change to the pc [09:38] that should check the filesystem of the 2tb [09:38] ok [09:39] you can also type the command in [09:40] hmm... [09:44] It does [09:44] tick check filesystem [09:45] whats happening? ive never used this thing before [09:46] I do not see the option. Remember there is no partition according to Linux. [09:46] ok close it [09:47] I can add a partition, format and Smart data which can run tests [09:47] ok [09:47] then in terminal [09:47] sudo aptitude install testdisk scalpel foremost [09:48] those are data recovery tools [09:48] How do I copy from this screen? [09:48] oh ok [09:48] ctrlc is copy [09:48] ctrl+c [09:48] ah okay [09:48] and ctrl+v is paste here [09:49] but in the terminal it will right click paste [09:49] Yeah I know the commands, but did not realize they would work in Linux [09:49] Y [09:49] ah [09:49] magespawn, you here? [09:54] K. Must I enter on it now? [09:54] yes [09:55] Must I paste the output? See now [10:15] ok [10:17] wb HecticZA [10:17] Thx [10:18] we need to know what that drives name is [10:18] disk utility? [10:18] do you see it in home now [10:19] Nope. No drives there [10:19] eish [10:19] ok use disk utility [10:20] where do I see the name? [10:20] Is it dev/sda? [10:20] when you tick on the 2tb it will open [10:21] lemme open disk utility and see [10:22] ya tick on the 2tb and it opens and on the right near the top it will show [10:22] next to device [10:23] /dev/sda [10:23] ok [10:23] you got 2 sata ports you using? [10:25] or is the 80g an ide [10:25] No, it is SATA and the 80GB is ide [10:25] normally the ide shows as sda [10:26] anyway try the fsck command again [10:26] It did when the 2TB was removed [10:26] sudo fsck -f /dev/sda1 [10:28] ronald@ronald-media:~$ sudo fsck -f /dev/sda1 [10:28] [sudo] password for ronald: [10:28] fsck from util-linux 2.20.1 [10:28] e2fsck 1.42 (29-Nov-2011) [10:28] fsck.ext2: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sda1 [10:28] Possibly non-existent device? Can I ask something else in the meantime? [10:46] yes [10:46] dont ask if you can ask just ask [10:46] ive been told that often [10:46] hehe [10:46] hah @ Kilos [10:49] Kilos: you are now one of the channel experts [10:49] whew magespawn this is hard without the drive here [10:49] no man [10:49] I had dual boot system with XP and Peppermint 3. Bothe hardrives had folders shared for Windows and Linux. I eventually decided to just instal 10.04 and deleted the 80GB hdd partition and created a new partition and made ext4 partition. and 3MB swap drive and installed Ubuntu. Is that procedure correct? I kow nothing about the ext4 etc [10:50] i think i need to start studying all the things [10:50] 3m is too little for swap [10:50] Kilos if I install teamviewer you can take my pc? [10:50] 2g is good [10:51] HecticZA: sounds fine, ext4 is default file system now [10:51] Okay will check on that swap drive [10:51] teamviewer dont work on ubuntu [10:51] Is that good or bad magespawn ? [10:51] It does? [10:51] how much swap you need depends on your usage nad how much ram is installed [10:51] I use it regurly? [10:51] 1GB [10:51] old pc [10:52] ext4 is a journaling file system so that means it is more resistant to failure tha NTFS or fat [10:52] we use other remote destop tools [10:52] I think my swap drive might be 3GB [10:53] Oh ok Kilos [10:53] thats fine but shouldnt be more than twice your ram [10:53] I read somewhere you can change the swap size? I will look at that a bit later [10:54] the swap keeps stuff that isnt being used at the moment [10:54] to save ram [10:54] it wont do harm if its 3g [10:54] Ok thx [10:54] just wont all be used [10:55] if that deeper search finds the rest things are looking up [10:56] I would be sooooo greatful. Only 2% done [10:56] after the write it should then be a bootable drive again [10:56] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ext4 there are options when it comes to this, but i like ext and have not had problems with it [10:56] ext4 is the best [10:56] It never was bootable though? [10:56] win pcs cant see it [10:57] Ooh. That is not so cool [10:57] oh is the 2tb just storage [10:57] I always have a shared folder on it [10:57] Yes Kilos, just data storage [10:57] ah [10:58] I don't know how I buggred it up. I was soo careful to stay away from the 2TB, but I had to install Ubuntu about 5 times, so it wrong somewhere. [10:58] *wen [10:58] *went [10:59] you shoulda just installed ubuntu on the 2tb sata is faster [10:59] Did wnt to risk the data on the 2TB, Lol [10:59] not want* [11:00] anyway we see if the write function makes it useable [11:00] hehe [11:00] well with luck on our side we will still find the data [11:01] HecticZA, what was the other question? [11:02] I strugled with the Ubunt install. Only later discovered that Telkom had dropped or the connection was very slow. Language packages showed 37964:56 to complete. I thought there was something wrong with didk or it was normal for Ubuntu. Waited almost 2 hours for it to try and install. [11:02] Okay hold on. Need to get a link [11:04] ubuntu installs in 25 mins [11:04] i always install without it updating at the same time [11:05] once installed then i update/upgrade [11:05] I had updates and 3rd party ticked. Only later discovered Telkom was buggered. Restarted router and finally it installed [11:07] you can install with no internet [11:07] much faster way i think [11:07] Oh did not know [11:08] and that way you can get a working os up and running [11:08] as i say 25 mins [11:08] yip [11:09] http://peppermintos.net/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=5666&start=0 I have issues with my screen resolution, because I'm connecting via a KVM switch. I have the same issue with Ubuntu now. The link has my solution for Peppermint. Will it work on ubuntu as well? [11:11] ive had some probs with screen resolution but when installing the nvidia drivers it sorts itself out [11:12] in dash type in additional [11:12] it will look for the card drivers [11:12] k [11:14] It is using the latest proprietary driver [11:14] good [11:15] nvidia-173? [11:15] I'm not using the MVK switch now and it works perfectly, but when I use the switch it goes to 640 x 480 [11:15] Yes 173. [11:15] But that is a fight for another day [11:16] ah [11:16] Why are some messages red at times? [11:16] im using the nvidia-173-extras i think [11:16] i dunno [11:17] k [11:17] messages on here are red [11:17] ? [11:17] nope [11:17] thats if your nick is mentioned [11:17] oh [11:17] ah okay [11:18] HecticZA, like this [11:18] Hi Kilos [11:18] lol okay and mine? [11:18] same [11:18] red here [11:18] Dar leer ek alweer iets :D [11:18] it helps one find personal messages [11:20] I need to do something quickly. This test is going to run for a while. Is it okay if I check back at 15:00 Would that suit you? [11:20] np [11:20] Ty :) [11:21] yw [11:21] HecticZA: i think peppermint is based on ubuntu so it might [11:21] debian i think ya [11:21] Squirm, will know [11:22] oh is peppermint and mint different [11:22] ? [11:23] It is. but someone said Peppermint is based on Lbuntu I think [11:23] Anyways, how do I indicate that I'm away? [11:24] at the top go settings [11:24] preferences [11:24] k [11:25] general [11:25] k [11:25] or do the "/away" command [11:26] * HecticZA is away: I'm busy [11:26] hehe [11:26] and when I'm back? [11:26] same? [11:26] whats the undo for that magespawn [11:26] * HecticZA is back (gone 00:00:41) [11:26] * HecticZA is away: I'm busy [11:27] * HecticZA is back (gone 00:00:06) [11:27] "/back' [11:27] ah ty [11:27] lol. Thx [11:27] well this time im gone for real. See later [11:27] later [11:27] * HecticZA is away: I'm busy [11:42] that was nogal hectic lol [11:42] hehe [11:43] so hard without the drive here [11:43] one of the ways i have found to do this is to write out a step by step procedure [11:44] yeah but finding where you saved it sucks [11:45] print it out maybe, and put it a file or bind them together [11:46] eek too many papers already [11:46] burned half or more even [11:46] books full of info [11:47] maybe some sort of electronic file system that allows you to search file via keywords [11:47] eish thats even more thinking [11:48] ah well that we cn't get away from [11:48] can't [11:48] hehe [11:48] better to just leave clever peeps to help noobs [11:48] i think you did fine there [11:49] its not fixed yet but lets hope hey [11:49] ty [11:50] would maybe have been easier using a ubcd disk [11:51] maybe [12:26] home time for me, later all [12:27] later magespawn [13:00] Im back [13:00] hddd 245 done :( [13:00] good grief. [13:00] Hdd at 24% [13:01] wb HecticZA [13:01] ya recoveries take long on slow pcs [13:01] Thx Kilos :) [13:02] but its a big drive [13:02] Yes I understand. [13:02] also adding ram will help your pc [13:02] ubuntu loves ram [13:02] It is DDr400 :( [13:03] they only come in 1g max i think [13:03] and hard to find [13:03] Can I ask about ppa? Yes you are correct [13:03] my pc also uses ddr but i dunno which [13:04] what about ppa? [13:05] AS I understand it, it is 3rd party drivers or apps and you need to add it, but how do you know the names you need to add? [13:05] most of what you need you will find in synaptic [13:06] then there is a command for adding ppa's but i dunno that [13:06] like the one we used for boot-repair [13:07] I'v eseen the command and I have notes on it, but it is a mystery for me where the ppl find the name. [13:07] yeah me too [13:07] what [13:07] um [13:07] i forgot now [13:09] but normally one can google what you want and you find commands there but normally ask here first [13:09] but always check synaptic first [13:10] Yeah, looks that might be the best for me.
