yownIs there a way to have gnome 2 like environment in 13.4 ubuntu?01:36
krytarikyown, see here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1966370&page=20&p=12665934#post1266593401:42
yownkrytarik: I have seen screeenshots of "fall back" but it misses the "system" menu tree, got any idea about that?01:45
krytarikyown: Nope, you'll just have to live with that then.01:46
yownLive with not being able to access important menu options? I think not. How can one properly manage without them?01:47
yownkrytarik: You don't know of a way to get a more full gnome 2 experience on 13.4?01:47
krytarikyown: It's all just under "Applications".01:48
krytarikIt's a bit inconvenient, but yeah.01:49
yownkrytarik: You mean all the options that were system were moved to application?01:49
krytarikYup.01:49
yownDo you know why this was done?01:50
krytarikOh, please not that discussion with me now. :P01:50
yownI didn't say I wanted to discuss it with you, I just asked if you knew some of the reasons behind it?01:51
yownkrytarik: Is there a clear screen icon in fallback? I am not seeing one in the screenshot01:53
krytarikyown: You mean "Show Desktop"? Yeah, there is.01:54
yownIs there a fork or addon or something that brings back "system"?01:55
yownfor 13.401:55
krytarikyown: Yeah, there is MATE, but I'm not a particular fan of it: http://mate-desktop.org/about/01:57
yownI looked at mate, it doesn't even have a top bar, and it crams all the menu trees into a windows like icon, which I am not a fan of. Is there a way to get MATE to look like gnome 2 krytarik?01:58
yownto give it a top bar including app shortcut placements, the 3 menus?01:59
krytarikyown: On the front page of MATE's site, it looks like, but have a look at the link I've posted.02:00
yownkrytarik: I did, what of it? That screenshot is of gnome 202:01
krytarikyown: Well, it's forked from Gnome 2, that's the whole point of it. :P02:02
krytarikyown: And it definitely used to look that, they seem to at least have added that other menu now though.02:03
yownWhat is, to work like gnome 2? All the screenshots I can find of it make it look like its imitating a windows set up, which is no good02:03
yownkrytarik:  What other menu, where, who? Please elaborate02:05
yownhi marawan2, you know anything about getting gnome 2 like DE on 13.4?02:06
marawan2yown: wow buddy, i joined this cuz it said for begginers02:06
marawan2yown: i am not of much help as of my little info02:07
Unit193!notunity | yown02:07
ubot93yown: Ubuntu 11.10 and higher use the !Unity desktop environment by default.  To use GNOME Shell instead, install the "gnome-shell" package and investigate "gnome-tweak-tool".  For GNOME Fallback mode, which is similar to GNOME 2, install "gnome-panel". Both packages will place entries in the Sessions dropdown.02:07
marawan2*me not understanding anything*02:09
marawan2ubot93: what is unity and gnome02:09
ubot93I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :)02:09
yownI can explain, they are desk top environments. In other words they are the graphical interface you use to interact with ubuntu02:09
krytarikyown: Please have a look at the announcement of its latest release, there is no Windows-like menu in -any- of those screenshots, just the old-style one: http://mate-desktop.org/2013/04/02/mate-1-6-released/02:10
marawan2yown: but i thought usity was for games and stuff02:10
krytarikyown: And now that we've talked about that, it's gone on the front page too, of course. :P02:11
yownmarawan2: no, unit is a DesktopEnvironment (or DE for short)02:11
yownin fact, unity is one of the most resource intensive DE's, and thus the worst for playing games over02:12
yownI dislike it for other reasons02:13
marawan2yown: but there are these begone and rush team games that require some plugin called unity 3d02:13
marawan2does that have anything related02:13
krytarikmarawan2: Nope.02:14
yownOh the flash player?02:14
marawan2yes02:14
yownNow that I think of it, I think there is a 3d flash player with a similar name, that has no relation to this02:14
krytarikmarawan2: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unity_3D02:15
yownkrytarik: But screenshots of 1.8 look like windows, is there a fallback to 1.6 mate?02:17
marawan2ubuntu is so candy eye02:18
marawan2lubuntu is not for sure02:18
yownmarawan2: Unfortunately there is no linux support for unity the flash player that I know of, nor of the latest flash update, I think anyway02:18
yownBut you could perhaps use wine, or other methods to indirectly make them work02:20
marawan2no i can't, i am running old crappy laptop on lubuntu so i cant02:22
yownwell no reason to bother with unity 3d in the first place then, since even directly without emulation or whatever, its not exactly low on resource requirement. Flash is pretty inefficient that way from what I have seen02:24
yownkrytarik: Still there? You know anything directly about mate? Have you used it before?02:26
krytarikyown: You realize that with MATE 1.8, you are talking about a version that isn't even released yet, right? And I can't even get screenshots of that on a quick web search right now. You may have more luck asking about such details in their own channel, #mate.02:28
krytarikyown: It looks like you are confusing MATE with Cinnamon.02:31
marawan2yown: me trying my best to theme ubuntu http://imgur.com/A3Wqd5N02:33
krytarikyown: And no, didn't try it myself, I'm past Gnome 2's setup since a while already, my blog partner did though.02:34
marawan2<krytarik> is it that all people who try linux are either blogers/youtubers, freelancers or programmers ? because i don't understand any of the mate and cinnamon you r saying!02:35
yownkrytarik: Did you say you didn't like Mate? If so, what didn't you like about it?02:37
yownmarawan2: They are the names of DE environments like I was explaining earlier02:38
krytarikyown: Yup, I said so. First, it's Gnome 2-ish; second, its default theme is really ugly. :P02:38
marawan2yown: well i guess there is many DE envirnoments02:38
yownThink of them as flavors of linux, and you will find it very simple to understand02:38
yownyes, very many02:38
yownAnd DE mostly effects how you interact with the Operating System, and not basic functionality/compatibility etc02:39
yownSo the analogy would be, ubuntu is a flavor of linux icecream, and a DE is the topping you might choose to put on top of that icecream02:40
krytarikI like that analogy. :)02:41
marawan2:)02:41
marawan2i think you guys should be at the Ubuntu-pro02:42
yownheh, except this is very basic stuff02:42
marawan2oh so there is more in depth02:43
yownOperating systems are very complex02:43
yownWindows is very complex, it just hides that complexity, where as linux exposes it more02:44
yownubuntu is a good entry point for a new person like yourself02:44
yownBut I would recommend against the default DE of ubuntu, "unity" as personally believe it is not newbie friendly02:45
marawan2my opinion linux is not newbie friendly at all02:46
yownIt really is02:46
marawan2while my grandma uses windows 7 with ease :D02:46
yownI was scared myself when first coming into linux, but really its pretty simple02:47
yownUse the ubuntu software center for installing new programs02:47
marawan2i am just past the scared02:47
marawan2right into the confused02:47
yownWell what confuses you02:48
marawan2some softwares will be like untrusted so i have to do some weird sudo apt stuff through the terminal02:48
marawan2which i don't understand what i am doing by the way02:48
yownAre you talking about installing through ubuntu software center?02:48
marawan2yes02:49
yownWell put the details here, and maybe someone can help02:49
marawan2i did in the ubuntu server02:49
yownyou mean the ubuntu channel?02:50
marawan2ya02:50
marawan2i am new to the irc chat too02:50
yownno help? Keep at it then, or ask here02:50
marawan2i got help02:50
yowncool02:50
marawan2they say use the synpatic pakge manager02:50
yownIts not like you can find this kind of help with windows02:50
marawan2no02:50
marawan2windows is crap, slow, viruse full, expensive and not FUN02:51
marawan2i got to admit linux is cool02:51
yownWell do as they instruct. There should be a bunch of lines you can put into a terminal in order to install what you need to install02:51
yownYou dont need to understand the lines at first02:51
yownJust find them online or through help02:51
marawan2ya thats what i did02:58
marawan2well yown, could you suggest some softwares for me03:03
marawan2yown u still there bro03:06
marawan2i didn't get to know your real name or where u from03:06
checkinhi10:13
checkinI am unable to toggle wireless on/off, mute/unmute, play/pause using Front operation panel LED keys on my Toshiba Qosmio F60. Currently I need to enable WiFi/Bluetooth from Windows for it to work. Fn+F8 toggle works as soft block/unblock only if I have already enabled WiFi under Windows. Any ideas as how this can be done? I have tried Ubuntu 13.04 as well. The only LED Touch button that works under Ubuntu is the Volume Up/10:13
oddthingyHello guys, I wonder if you could help me here please -10:22
oddthingyDo you know of any usb wireless modem devices that are known to work straight away (plug&play)?10:23
