marawan2hello01:05
marawan2i would like to ask you guys about a list of suggested softwares from the ubuntu software center01:06
marawan2like one for the graphics, games, internet etc01:06
rmobenchainhello everyone.  I am trying to play a game on chess.com but everytime I try to, it tells me I need to install an iced tea java plugin.  when I did so via the terminal, nothing happens.  am on chrome using Ubuntu 13.0401:10
marawan2maybe the chess.com game in not designed for linux01:12
Unit193rmobenchain: You icedtea-7-plugin and restart chrome?01:12
wilee-nileermobenchain, Did you try firefox, do you have the restricted extras installed?01:12
rmobenchainI tried restarting chrome.  restricted extras?  uh, didn't know there were restricted extras01:12
rmobenchainand also had no luck on firefoxc01:13
Unit193!restricted01:13
ubot93For multimedia issues, this page has useful information: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats - See also https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/ubuntu-help/media.html  - But please use free formats if you can: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FreeFormats01:13
rmobenchainwould this be the correct terminal command?  sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras01:14
rmobenchainwill try it :)01:14
wilee-nileermobenchain, Yeah if your running ubuntu01:15
rmobenchainwilee-niles: it seems to be working.  terminal is doing its thing01:15
wilee-nileedesktop if xubuntu or kubuntu you would sub them, however they are probably the same01:15
wilee-nileermobenchain, YOu can tab complete nicks so we see the answer in red as you do here.01:16
rmobenchainnot sure what you just said... LOL01:16
wilee-nileermobenchain, type will then hit tab and it will complete my nick, I then am notified you are talking to me besides seeing my name.01:17
rmobenchainwilee-nilee: ahhh... that's cool01:17
wilee-nileeDoh wilee-nilee01:17
rmobenchaindid I do it right?01:18
wilee-nileeI spelled it wrong first letters of nick then tab to complete01:18
wilee-nileermobenchain, that be it camper. ;)01:18
wilee-nileesometimes the channel gets so busy and full of stuff it gets hard to follow is all.01:19
rmobenchainwilee-nilee: awesome.  I'm now on title page of user agreements, with an OK option at the bottom, how do I OK that stuff?01:19
wilee-nileermobenchain, In the terminal?01:19
rmobenchainwilee-nilee:  yes01:21
wilee-nileermobenchain, In the terminal I do it without thinking, the arrow keys to hit yes or y for yes I forget01:21
wilee-nileermobenchain, If needed you can do a screen shot and imagebin it if no one else remembers.01:22
rmobenchainwilee-nilee: nope, not working. if i coudl take a screenshot and show it, i would01:22
krytarikrmobenchain: Use Tab and Enter.01:23
wilee-nileekrytarik, THanks that sounds right, I have done it so many times I do it without thinking.01:23
rmobenchainkrytarik: did it, and nothing01:24
krytarikrmobenchain: Is the terminal window even in focus? :P01:25
rmobenchainkrytarik: but print screen worked!01:25
krytarikrmobenchain: And on the second screen, the Arrow keys as mentioned by wilee-nilee.01:26
rmobenchainkrytarik: wilee-nilee  AHA!  the arrows worked!01:26
wilee-nileermobenchain, Cool, hope that gets you on the chessboard to rip it up. ;)01:28
rmobenchainwilee-nilee: getting ready to close and restart browser and will come back to let you know :)01:35
wilee-nileecool01:35
rmobenchainit would seem that didn't work.  still have a gray screen01:38
wilee-nileermobenchain, I would contact them, to see the compatibility. THere is a firefox addon called user agent switcher that will have you masquerade as pther browsers life safari or ie and a bunch of others, I have had to use it in a college online situation.01:43
wilee-nileejust guessing here really01:43
rmobenchainwilee-nilee: i might try that.  i also have an IT buddy who might be able to help me out too.  thanks :)01:44
wilee-nileermobenchain, No problem.01:44
raubBonding question:15:35
raubin https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBonding eth0 and eth1 are defined15:36
raubbut in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1631796 they are specifically not. How come?15:36
argosy_opsHey everyone :) I hope this is the right place to ask. Trying my own server installation of Ubuntu for the first time, but I can't seem to get it to boot after installation20:36
argosy_opsI had a RAID1 configured through EFI which would cause grub to exit the installation. Afterwards, I tried setting up a software RAID through the Ubuntu installer instead. Went through fine, but "no bootable device" afterwards20:38
argosy_opsSince there are no further meaningful error notices, I have no clue where to start searching for the issue20:40
holsteinargosy_ops: i would just try installing, if its your first, time20:53
holsteinargosy_ops: just do a normal install, no software raid20:54
holstein!uefi20:54
ubot93UEFI is a specification that defines a software interface between an operating system and platform firmware, it is meant as a replacement for the BIOS. For information on how to set up and install Ubuntu and its derivatives on UEFI machines please read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI20:54
holstein^ that could be an issue, if thats what you are referencing20:54
holsteinargosy_ops: the server boots to a prompt anyways. FYI20:54
holsteinargosy_ops: you also dont need ubuntu server to run an ubuntu server20:54
argosy_opsWell, it's a server machine that's supposed to have some redundancy, so doing without wouldn't be too much of a help :)20:55
holsteinargosy_ops: if you are able to install one of the variants, you can just add ther server components you want to it20:55
holsteinargosy_ops: supposed to?20:55
holsteinargosy_ops: im only suggesting that you "get your feet wet"20:55
holstein"some redundancy" could be you manually backing things up occasionally20:56
holsteinRAID is not the only redundancy. and arguably not the best, considering the situation20:56
argosy_opsThat happens in addition. That server has been purchased with raid-optimized drives, so it would be a waste not to use it that way20:56
argosy_ops*reads the UEFI article*20:56
holsteinargosy_ops: then, you'll just need to RTFM20:56
holsteinargosy_ops: i have always found it a bit of a challenge.. and i dont use software RAID anyway20:57
holsteinif you saved the reciepts, maybe just return the machine, or the drives, and get something more "normal"20:57
holsteineither, take some of the bigger server company's ideas, and just use normal consumer drives20:58
holsteinor, get something that comes ready to go, from somewhere like system7620:58
holsteinyou should need "raid optimized drives"20:58
holsteinyou just put the drives in a raid.. if you want a raid20:58
argosy_opshmm that article is interesting, holstein. The tutorials I21:10
argosy_opsI've followed so far went ahead with only a raid and a swap partition, this article now mentions a mandatory EFI partition - which I did try before, but failed with "could not create efi filesystem".21:10
holsteinargosy_ops: you have many variables21:11
holsteinargosy_ops: are you new to linux?21:11
holsteinwhat i suggest, which is not what you want to hear, but.. you should just insatll *something*... anything to get started21:11
argosy_opsI've used Ubuntu so far, but I've never installed it21:11
holsteinyou dont know if the machine supports ubuntu21:12
holsteinyou dont know if the hardware support is OK21:12
holsteini would install whatever you are used to.. main ubuntu as i said21:12
holsteinthat can be run on a raid.. on uefi21:12
holsteinthen, when you get that running, you can use it as the server21:12
holsteinubuntuserver *is* ubuntu21:12
holsteinsame repos21:12
argosy_opsIn which way would the procedure or expectable result be different if it's the same down the line?21:13
holsteinargosy_ops: well, for you, its going to look familiar21:13
holsteinyoull have a desktop you can use for a bit21:14
holsteinyou can always get rid of that later21:14
holstein!text21:14
ubot93To start your system in text-only mode append 'text' (without the quotes) to the kernel line in the grub menu. You can access the grub menu by pressing Esc (Grub legacy) or Shift (Grub2) during boot. For more info see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions#Text%20Mode21:14
argosy_opsI meant in terms of installation procedure, since I've got stuck before even being able to boot up any desktop :)21:15
holsteinyou'll be able to get to a desktop from the live CD> then, you'll hav an idea of the hardware support21:15
argosy_opsah21:15
holsteinyou'll have GUI's for everything, to start with21:15
argosy_opswell that's worth a try21:15
argosy_opsI'll create a live usb tomorrow, thanks for the assistance :)21:18
holsteinsure. good luck!21:20
