Connect the router to the pc via LAN cable, and use the pc as the gateway. You can setup dhcp on either the wifi router, or via the pc. [14:04] Gateway setup can be done via IPTables Masquerading. [14:05] basically packet forwarding by the firewall. [14:05] i have it and it connects to pc with eth cable [14:05] i dont know how to do anything on the router [14:06] but pc shows its connected [14:07] Ok basically, the easiest would be dhcp setup on the pc. So that when the tablet connects to wifi, it gets assigned an IP by the dhcp server (pc) [14:07] Ubuntu pc? [14:07] i didnt get a book with it and the online manual link dont work [14:07] yip 12.04 [14:08] What make and model is the wifi? [14:08] Ok Guide to setup for dhcp server: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-and-configure-dhcp-server-in-ubuntu-server.html [14:09] billion 7300 nx [14:09] ty [14:09] I'm assuming the problem is the wifi router setup, correct? [14:10] i know nothing about it, ive setup my nm to do dhcp automatic [14:11] nm? [14:11] tablet sees it but cant use the 3g connection [14:11] network manager [14:11] ah ok. [14:11] let me see what that link says [14:11] something we can try, on the tablet settings for wifi connections, set the gateway to the pcs ip. [14:11] i might have to install something here [14:12] Maybe we're lucky and the ip the billion has is the same range as the pcs. [14:12] where do you find these settings [14:13] Ok, this is going to complicate things...lets get into the billion, and do the setup correctly. [14:14] tomorrow is fine if you prefer [14:14] anytime tomorrow [14:15] you near hometime now arent you [14:15] I'm leaving work at 16:30. But I'll log in from home at around 18:00. [14:15] I wonder if you use the free data before your real data or if it's afterwards like the free airtime [14:15] I got an sms that with every R50 recharged they give you 50 free sms and 50MB data [14:15] thats fine ty Superhuman [14:16] what isp Trixar_za [14:16] 8ta [14:16] i dont get that free stuff [14:16] Same 7 day deal [14:17] and add R150 at a time [14:17] Which is really just 6 days [14:17] :P [14:17] Kilos: Docs for the router - http://issuu.com/fanusvanstraten/docs/billion-bipac-7300nx-router [14:17] ty Superhuman [14:18] what is your lan ip for the pc? [14:19] Kilos: ifconfig in command line, look for eth0 or eth1. [14:20] inet address is 10.42.0.1 [14:20] mmm, is there a reason for being set to that (to use on another network or something) [14:20] ? [14:21] nope thats what it did when i installed [14:21] use to have 192.168. o.0 i think [14:22] Ok, can you set it to 192.168.1.1 for this? It will make things LOADS better. So that the pc has a static IP. [14:22] ok ill do that in nm [14:23] cool. That's for the LAN cable connection, so we know how/where to connect to. [14:23] That will be the gateway IP the tablet uses when it connects. [14:23] gateway the same [14:24] ? [14:24] no gateway address...I think...maybe 127.0.0.1 [14:24] will put that in [14:25] ok done i restart everything before you come on tonight [14:28] ok cool. [14:28] i dunno how to download that manual [14:29] I'm trying now, but it's taking forever. I'll check on the download later, and share a new link with you. [14:29] ok ty [14:29] Ok, I'm off for now. Will be back at 6. [14:30] later [14:30] Kilos: Take a look at Page 27 on the doc (online reader). We will need to reset the wifi router to factory settings, so we can get into it via the browser on the pc. [14:31] the red box explains how to reset it to factory settings. [16:16] Superhuman: Okay, I'll tell Kilos on freenode [16:18] unity is dead... it is no more... [16:18] maybe the install for the dhcp server broke something... [16:20] unity is dead? [16:20] what about unity 8? [16:23] unity 8 is in space... Mir to be exact :p [16:26] :p [16:26] it's coming... [16:26] as is Christmas.. [16:28] and winter [16:28] :D [16:33] winter is here '-';;; [16:33] but yeah, i think we really need to wait for 14.04 to see what it'll be like [16:33] 13.10 will run Mir by default, but i don't expect it to be a smooth experience [16:34] watch this: http://ubuntuonair.com/ [16:43] 13.10 will be running XMir if I am not mistaken... [16:44] ah [16:44] xmir :p [16:44] right [16:44] i was a bit confused by what i said, and i started looking for more info >.< [16:45] wait.. [16:45] lazy link - http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/06/mir-display-server-to-ship-default-in-ubuntu-13-10 [16:45] http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/06/mir-display-server-to-ship-default-in-ubuntu-13-10?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+d0od+%28OMG!+Ubuntu!%29 [16:45] unity 7 running on xmir [16:45] oh yeah [16:45] same link [16:45] mine just has rss info in it [16:46] :p [16:46] but read the article [16:46] "But while Mir and XMir will be shipping in October’s release by default, not everyone will be able to use it." [16:46] it implies both Mir and XMir will be running [16:46] doesn't quite make sense -.- [16:46] so i am confused -.- [16:46] read whole article and it doesn't mention mir once... only xmir and normal x for fallback [16:46] oh oh oh [16:46] no no [16:46] afaik [16:47] it is running Mir [16:47] but because Unity 7 was written for X [16:47] XMir must be used to provide Unity 7 [16:47] maybe i'm misunderstanding, but that's really the impression i get [16:47] but still with xmir in bewteen.... seems like [16:48] no native mir / unity 8 [16:48] I have been following this and the whole wayland debacle and can't make head or tales of it still.... [16:48] yeah [16:48] well, when unity 8 is ready then it will be much better [16:49] but that will probably be for 14.04 only [16:49] what exactly mir / wayland does still confuses me (one thing I read still has x doing most of the work and mir / wayland not so much) [16:49] I thought x would be replaced completely but doesn't seem so [16:49] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_server [16:49] oh [16:50] i think x will be replaced completely, but it will take some time [16:50] it's a huge piece of software that does many things [16:50] so to replace it isn't easy [16:50] i think that's why we have new software coming through, but providing compatibility (XMir) for programs written for X [16:51] until all programs have been written for the new display servers we're bound to encounter X and / or compatibility layers [16:52] then mir is in trouble as no other project seems to care about it ... it is all wayland currently... except if canonical will make all apps compatible [16:52] XMir is just a driver for X, so X can run on Mir [16:53] for now, Mir is a system-level compositor [16:53] tumbleweed to the rescue :) [16:54] not_found, i'm not sure about that - Mir has different goals to Wayland - it's just that Wayland is targeting pretty much everything and suits a broader market [16:54] Mir may be ideal for many others, but it needs to mature first [16:55] sounds exciting and greek... [16:56] Mir and Wayland have very similar goals, as far as I can see [16:56] just slightly different implementation [16:56] and Mir (at least initially) will only have X and Unity on top of it [16:56] unless Mir takes off [16:57] i thought Mir was going for the streamlined approach - only offering so much as is needed for Ubuntu (Touch) [16:57] and that Wayland was trying to cater to everything and operating systems in general [16:57] yes [16:58] although, the Mir people seem to be keen for people to start using Mir [16:59] so that any requirements non-Unity clients have can be dealt with before the design stabilises too much [17:01] oh, that makes a lot of sense :) [17:01] chatting to 민아 now... so kinda AFK >.< [17:07] well I will watch form the side lines and see... [17:09] yeah, me, too [17:09] i'd love to try out Unity 8 [17:09] and see what it's like [17:25] * not_found installed Fedora 19 this afternoon, not much time to play with it yet [17:30] 280mb of updates right of the bat... but a big chunk was libreoffice related [17:36] evening all. what a schlep [17:37] even the remastersys dvd took three installs before it eventually got to rebooting [17:37] im just making a sarmy [17:42] o/ uncle Kilos [17:42] yo not_found [17:43] pc problems uncle Kilos? [17:44] the installing must be pc related yeah not_found but i reinstalled because installing some server thing broke everything from going online [17:44] grrr [17:45] but going now again [17:45] good luck [17:46] sorry about that Kilos [17:46] wasnt you man Superhuman [17:46] i musta done something wrong [17:47] lol the fly always tells me dont follow instructions on the net [17:48] mmm, then we should rather use the router as the dhcp server... [17:48] i cant even read or download that manual [17:48] whew [17:49] must you register there before you can read it? [17:50] bbl [17:50] no, I could read without issues. but my download failed at work [17:51] actually when i got online there i only saw that book in the centre of the page [17:52] yeah, loading takes a while, then you should be able to read it [17:52] and when i ticked on it i got funny windows moving around on the screen so dunno if drive got sick then or some weird thing in that site [17:52] how does one download it? [17:53] i dunno why they dont show a download button [17:53] need to login to download [17:53] aha [17:54] the page was black and i couldnt even read where to type in what to register [17:57] to reset the router, hold the reset button for 6 seconds...then we continue from there [17:58] ok i have connected it yet even but will do that after reset [17:58] should be powered for reset. [18:02] Kilos: let me know when it's connected on the lan and reset. [18:05] damn, I hope I didn't break his pc again. [18:08] wb Kilos [18:08] eish that router disconnects my 3g [18:08] ty [18:08] eish [18:08] maybe remove tge [18:08] remove what? [18:09] remove the gateway stuff from your eth connection. [18:10] that might be the cause of the disconnects [18:10] nm shows everything as default settings [18:11] jnothing added [18:11] ok [18:12] is it resetting thats done something now [18:12] oh my oh my [18:12] evening Kilos Superhuman [18:12] hi magespawn [18:12] is it connected atm? [18:23] jip, thanks [18:23] whew [18:24] thought that was bust as well [18:24] maybe the router needs to reboot [18:25] ok, lets try setup the lan ip, as 192.168.1.1 with nothing as a gateway. [18:25] and no dns... [18:25] ok [18:25] so just ip, broadcast and netmask [18:26] ok [18:26] that should give u an ip on the eth0 otput... [18:27] i have to go manual in nm to do that [18:27] lets reboot the router, and cnnect it up gain on the lan cable. [18:28] damn keyboard misses keys.. [18:28] netmask same as gateway? [18:28] no, should be 255.255.255.0 [18:29] i dont see netmask block [18:29] broadcast 192.168.1.0 [18:29] leave it out the . [18:29] *then [18:29] oh thats where you enter 24 and it does the 3255 bit [18:31] broadcast is 192.168.1.255 [18:31] my bad [18:31] i dont see broadcast i see gateway [18:31] leave gateway blank [18:32] so then i just do ip and netmask [18:33] jip [18:33] ok [18:33] after that, you can try to ping 192.168.1.1 [18:33] should get a response for it. [18:34] nope [18:35] thats now my ip aint it [18:36] yes. you should see it on ifconfig [18:37] nope need to restart nm dont i [18:37] shouldn't have to, but might work [18:43] looks like nm isn't taking the settings for eth0... [18:43] the router aint connected [18:44] no listing for eth0 in ifconfig? [18:44] ya [18:44] but no ip [18:44] i hate nm. [18:46] ok commandline time: sudo ip addr add 192.168.1.1/24 dev eth0 [18:46] sudo ip link set dev eth0 up [18:47] done [18:47] ifconfig? [18:48] there we go [18:48] jip. I need to look at that manual again. [18:56] so i dont touch it [18:57] thats cool ty very much [18:57] we'll do it via tge routers web interface [18:57] ok [18:57] i need to read up on the masquerading as well [18:58] glad you know what you are doing [18:58] lol, i play it by ear [18:58] lol [18:58] i understand what needs to happen, and go from there [18:58] i still have notes here somewhere on masquerading [18:59] when i set up other pc as a server [18:59] but then i could set that pcs ip addy manually [18:59] i have a config somewhere for it [18:59] ah [19:01] ok I'm off.
