xubuntu116Hello. I am a new user with very little experience in the behind the scenes work of operating systems15:59
xubuntu116we are using a virtual client of Xubuntu to run an integrated  library system15:59
xubuntu116We have found that configuring printers has been an issue for us16:00
xubuntu116we are currently using the citizen c300 receipt printer, and are having some issues getting it configured16:01
[0gb_us]Xubuntu 13.04 has several issues, so I'm reinstalling 12.04 on my other computer from the mini.iso CD. However, the CD is failing to download GRUB. It is connected to te network, as it was installing other packages before that. Is there something I can try?18:29
dverghi, i'm stuck with an odd problem. i installed gnome-sudoku, and every time i start it the width of the window is wider than my display. I can change the height, but i cannot narrow the window, only make it even wider.18:30
Sysidverg: how small display do you have?18:31
Sysican you maximize the window?18:31
recon_lapwhats the deal with 0gb_us as a user name? dont seem to be able to tab complete it!18:32
[0gb_us]It starts with a square bracket.18:32
[0gb_us][18:32
recon_lapdverg: right click on the title bar and select resize18:32
Sysiirssi tabcompletes [0gb_us] just fine18:32
[0gb_us]I'd drop the brackets, but without them, IRC won't let me begin my name with a digit.18:33
recon_laplol, My brain just filtered out the brackets, to much programming I guess18:34
[0gb_us]Ha ha, yeah.18:34
recon_lap[0gb_us]: i was going to suggest you check your sources list on the install media to see what repo it's using18:35
[0gb_us]recon_lap, ow do I do that?18:35
recon_lap/etc/apt-get/source.lst i think18:35
dverg_the display is 1042x768 and i can maximize, but than some part is still outside the display18:36
dverg_sry, had a disconnect18:36
recon_lapdverg_: sounds like you screen size is set larger than your computers actual resolution18:37
[0gb_us]I can't find that directory on the iso.18:37
Sysi/etc/apt/sources.list but I'm not sure what would the installer use18:37
dverg_i have this problem only with the one prgramm , everything else works fine18:39
SysiI guess gnome-sudoku has minimum size hardcoded, you need to try some other sudoku app18:39
dverg_i have this problem with gnome-sudoke since i use xubuntu 13.04 on 12.04 sudoku had also a minimum window width, but much more narrow18:42
[0gb_us]It seems that the ubuntu.com server(s) is/are down. Maybe GRUB is on the down server, and the other packages are on other servers.18:43
recon_lap[0gb_us]: what server is it using?18:45
Sysiwith expertmode you can select what mirror to use18:45
[0gb_us]I think it's us.archives.ubuntu.com.18:46
recon_lapI think there where problems with GRUB when 12.04 came out, the repo's might have been changed18:46
[0gb_us]I'll try the Canadian mirror. Other than that, I don't know what to do if the mini.iso doesn't use the right servers. I don't have a spare DVD right now, and the regular Xubuntu installer won't fit on a CD.18:48
recon_lap[0gb_us]: just did a apt-get update , got no errors18:48
[0gb_us]From a working system though.18:48
[0gb_us]This is a blank drive using the mini.iso.18:49
recon_lap[0gb_us]: thats why i was asking what the repo address is, so I can see if it is online and contains grub18:49
[0gb_us]I don't know how to tell unless it's the chosen download mirror, which is us.archive.ubuntu.com.18:49
recon_lap[0gb_us]: that would be it18:50
[0gb_us]I'll ping it from the other computer.18:51
[0gb_us]It says it's up. Though the browser won't go there, so I guess there's no HTTP service right now.18:52
krytarikWell, I get there.18:52
[0gb_us]Oops, the browser switched to HTTPS on me ...18:53
[0gb_us]Okay, I'm there, though I don't know what to look for.18:53
recon_lap[0gb_us]: so you got a error about downloading grub, did it continue installing?18:54
[0gb_us]Also, both the Canadian and Mexican mirrors are said to be invalid by the installer.18:54
[0gb_us]No, the installer stops when it can't download GRUB.18:54
[0gb_us]It allows me to retry or go back to past installation steps.18:55
[0gb_us]It also says I can skip installing GRUB but that if I do, the computer won't boot.18:56
recon_lap[0gb_us]: there is a solution to that, you can boot from the live CD and install GRUB manually18:56
[0gb_us]The live CD won't fit on a CD and I lack a DVD at the moment.18:57
recon_lap[0gb_us]: can you boot from the CD? you should be able to get a command line at least18:57
[0gb_us]Booting from the mini CD gives me the installer. Booting from the live CD isn't possible without a DVD to burn it to as it has a lot of packages and won't fit on a CD.18:58
Sysican you get to the instalaltion menu? select cancel or something with tab19:00
Sysithere's "change debconf priprity"19:00
Sysiif you set that to low you should get mirror selection in some other menu item19:01
[0gb_us]Okay, aborted. It's reloading the CD now.19:01
Sysiit's the same as selecting expert mode when booting19:01
recon_lap[0gb_us]: There is probably a way, just need to figure out the magic command :)19:01
[0gb_us]"Command-line install"?19:01
Sysino "Expert install" or "Expert mode"19:02
[0gb_us]The only command-line option.19:02
[0gb_us]"Advanced options >"?19:02
Sysimight be under that19:02
[0gb_us]The only other two are "Install" and "Help".19:02
[0gb_us]Okay, it's a sub-menu. "Expert install" is here.19:03
[0gb_us]What do I do from here?19:04
recon_lapwhat bring up the boot menu in 12.04 when it's booting, f2? f6?19:04
[0gb_us]I don't know. I've never brought that up.19:04
[0gb_us]Neither key does anything.19:06
recon_lap[0gb_us]: you have to press it when GRUB is loading from the CD as it's booting. but never used a mini-cd so not sure19:07
[0gb_us]Hmm. I don't know. I'll reboot it and try.19:08
Sysidoesn't matter, just select good mirror in the expert install19:08
[0gb_us]Oops, I got to hardware bios with F2.19:08
recon_lap[0gb_us]: Sysi's suggestion seems good, do we know of a good mirror ?19:08
[0gb_us]us.archive.ubuntu.com seems good exapt for GRUB. ca.archive.ubuntu.co and mx.archive.ubuntu.com are said by the installer to be bad.19:10
[0gb_us]I don't know other than that. I could keep trying mirrors.19:10
SysiI'm starting to doubt your install CD, would be quite something to have three mirros dysdunctional19:11
recon_lap[0gb_us]: I think the problem is that grub got changed after 12.04 can out and old installers are not configured with the new grub setup19:11
recon_lap[0gb_us]: so all mirrors probably going to cause the same problem19:11
recon_lapcan out/came out*19:12
[0gb_us]I see. So either the CD is dysfunctional and needs to be redownloaded and burnt or it is mis-configured.19:12
Sysiif some installer was broken it should've been fixed (unless it's very recent)19:12
Sysi[0gb_us]: usb isn't option?19:13
[0gb_us]My only USB drive that I know where it is has data I can't lose on it. If there is a way to set that up without losing the drive's contents, that might work. Though I've never booted this computer from USB, I don't know if it has that option.19:14
recon_lap [0gb_us] do you get a prompt at any stage of booting?19:18
[0gb_us]No prompt until the installer menu. On my laptop I get the bios prompt, but not on the desktop.19:19
Sysiyou don't need to press anything to get to the menu with mini.iso19:21
[0gb_us]Okay, so the menu I see is the right one?19:22
recon_lap[0gb_us]: you get anywhere?19:48
[0gb_us]No, I'm still in the same place. THough I'm researching the "alternate CD" in hopes that it holds the answer.19:50
recon_lap[0gb_us]: so you have no way to boot from the live CD, I find that hard to believe. there must be a way to the cli19:52
[0gb_us]I can boot from the mini CD, but the live CD is not a CD - it's a DVD. There in lies the issue.19:52
recon_lap[0gb_us]: but can you boot to a cli from the mini CD19:53
Sysiit's quite restricted and if mini doesn't contain grub files it won't even help19:53
recon_lap[0gb_us]: if not, it's a big feature that was overlooked19:53
[0gb_us]These are two options for installing via the command line, but no other options to open the command line.19:54
recon_lapSysi: install without grub, boot from mini cd to cli, install grub $sudo  grub-install  --boot-directory=/mnt/boot    /dev/sdX   19:54
Sysiactually installing command line system means just that you don't install xubuntu desktop19:54
Sysirecon_lap: does. not. help. if. there. is. no. grub. to . install19:55
recon_lapapt get the correct version first19:57
Sysihmm, using chroot and running apt from the installed system might work19:58
[0gb_us]Exept that I can't get to the installed system, only the live one.19:59
[0gb_us]NickServ is going to log me out here.20:00
=== ashams is now known as Guest64962

Sysithat's why I said chroot, running from cd doesn't restrict from using the system on harddrive20:01
Guest60110I see.20:01
Sysidoesn't mini cd have the option to boot from harddrive?20:01
=== genii is now known as Guest71967
Guest60110No, it doesn't.20:01
Sysihum, I think it should20:01
recon_lapdont know much about chroot myself, hardly ever used it20:03
=== Guest71967 is now known as genii
recon_lapbut we cant get to a cli from the mini cd, so not really progressing20:05
Sysiyou can press ctrl alt F1 at any point of installation to get tty20:07
[0gb_us]That key combination is having no effect.20:07
[0gb_us]It works on my laptop, but not on this mini CD.20:08
Sysiit doesn't work on the startup menu20:09
recon_lapprobably a GUI key combo20:09
Sysictrl alt f2 maybe if tty1 is reserved20:10
[0gb_us]Probably. I'll start the installer though and try the key combination again to be sure.20:10
recon_lap[0gb_us]: also try pressing del and esc , see if you can get a grub menu20:10
Sysitty4 should have installation status/progress list20:10
SysiI think it's shift20:10
[0gb_us]Okay, yeah, it looks like tty1 is in use by the installer, but tty2 is open.20:10
recon_lap[0gb_us]: well that could work, wonder if you have a net connection now , lol20:12
[0gb_us]No, it doesn't know what connection to use untill later in the instalation proccess. Unless there is a way to tell it via the command line.20:13
[0gb_us]It seems there is no apt-get anyway.20:15
recon_lap[0gb_us]: you need to install without grub first, then you can chroot and run it off the hard drive20:17
recon_lap[0gb_us]: after you boot from the mini-cd and get a tty20:17
recon_lap[0gb_us]: all very hopeful though20:17
Sysiactually you don't need chroot for running it but to make it work20:17
Sysistart chroot and run apt with absolute path20:17
[0gb_us]Okay. So install, skip installing GRUB, then load the CD again? Doing ...20:17
geniiIf minimal or server iso then usually console 1  is active, then console 2,3 you can start busybox and console 4 is the output of console 120:17
Sysiif you already did the installation, no need to redo it20:18
recon_lap[0gb_us]: ctrl alt f2 to get a tty console (cli in other words)20:18
[0gb_us]When I canceled the installation, the installer said the system would be left in an unusable state.20:19
recon_lap[0gb_us]: you have to finish the install. so reinstall from start20:20
Sysiwell it didn't boot20:20
Sysithough it might have left some step out if you didn't finish the installation20:20
[0gb_us]It also didn't finish some of the other parts of the installation. Namely, anything installed after GRUB.20:20
recon_lap[0gb_us]: can you give me the exact name of the grub package it failed to find?20:22
[0gb_us]I forger what it was called. It failed to download six files, then said grub-<something> couldn't be installed. I'll check the name of it once the installer gets to that point again.20:24
[0gb_us]The installer seems to have locked up this time. Restarting.20:44
recon_lap[0gb_us]: thats not good. maybe a trip to a web cafe with a blank dvd :)20:49
[0gb_us]I don't have a DVD, only a stack of CDs.20:50
[0gb_us]I have a network connection here though on the other computer.20:50

lesbianGreenhi guys, i got a minor problem. My external Usbdrive is fighting against ejection and unmounting. When I open up the terminal and type: "sudo umount /dev/sdX" I get this error message: MyUSBdrive is busy". When I check which process is stalling my wish to eject is the "sleep" and "xdg-scree" (screensaver, i guess). How can i fix this?22:19
holsteinlesbianGreen: i would test it, and go from there22:19
lesbianGreenwhat do you mean by test it?22:20
lesbianGreenI'm new to linux and so I don't know that much :/22:20
holsteinlesbianGreen: you should be able to mount it in the filemanager22:21
holsteinlesbianGreen: what happends when you open the filemanager, plug it in, and unmount it from the filmenager?22:21
lesbianGreenthe mounting is not the problem, i can see all my data and copy whatever i want. The Problem is the Ejecting/Unmounting. Even Using the right click in the file manager says: Volume is busy and it shows the sleep process (sleep 50, but i don't have a clou what's that) and the Bourne Shell (some screensaver stuff).22:24
holsteinlesbianGreen: and, what about when you plug it in and literally dont do anything else? and use the filemanager?22:25
lesbianGreenthen, everything is fine, but after copying any data I'm confronted with this problem22:25
lillenI would like to add my xubuntu-13.04-desktop-i386.iso as an apt-repository. Is there a good way to do this? Thanks a million!22:25
