JohnathonHello, is it natural for an installation to hang at "Generating locales en_US.utf-8" I had the same problem with Linux Mint, but Puppy started fine.03:04
Unit193What's the specs on your computer, and how long a hang?03:05
Johnathon256mb ram, 2.6ghz processor Not sure on gfx card. 30gb hdd. between 10-30 minutes, the furtherst it got was on Mint, it got to a cursor and would loop between that and the moniter being out of range03:06
Unit19330 minutes is a bit long, but ram is pretty small.  I'd recommend the alternate, or purge the slideshow.03:08
JohnathonThat is what the people at mint said, I tried their 2 distro sorts, and both failed. What I don't under stand is how can Puppy work but these two don't03:08
Unit193Puppy is quite a bit different, if you want to try something else also different, you can always try AntiX.03:09
JohnathonI can look into it, but not it got past generating them, now it is sittign at a blank screen03:10
JohnathonCould it be gfx issues?03:11
JohnathonAnyone?03:14
vn151502510hi03:15
Unit193Howdy, you can try to drop to a tty and check the logs.03:16
JohnathonHow would I do that?03:16
Unit193!tty03:17
ubottuTo get to the TTY terminals 1-6, use the keystroke ctrl + alt + F1-F6 respectively (Alt+F7 will get you back to your graphical login).  To change the resolution for your TTY, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ChangeTTYResolution03:17
JohnathonI have nothing, just a blank screen but ok03:18
JohnathonI'm talking from another computer, this one is just sitting on a blank screen and nothing happened when I pressed any of them03:19
JohnathonOh something new, wall of text popped up03:20
JohnathonCan't type anything, but what i can see its saying its mounting my USB which it is installing off. and such03:23

holstein!ask | Johnathon04:11
ubottuJohnathon: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience04:11
JohnathonI've already said my problem. It takes forever to load then just hangs on a blank screen with no response04:12
holsteinJohnathon: it?04:12
JohnathonThe computer I am trying to install Lubuntu on04:12
holsteinJohnathon: are you saying, you wont ask your question for me, in detail?04:12
holsteinJohnathon: lubuntu 13.04?04:12
JohnathonYes04:13
holsteinJohnathon: and you confirme the iso?04:13
holstein!md504:13
ubottuTo verify your Ubuntu ISO image (or other files for which an MD5 checksum is provided), see http://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM or http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/answers/LQ_ISO/Checking_the_md5sum_in_Windows04:13
JohnathonYes04:13
holsteinJohnathon: does it load the live desktop?04:13
JohnathonI'll try now, I just wanted it installed. I'll report back to see if that loads04:13
holstein!mini04:14
ubottuThe Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want.  The installer is text based (rather than graphical as used on the Desktop DVD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD04:14
holsteinJohnathon: you can try using those to install from, but i would want to see the desktop load04:14
holsteinJohnathon: what are you used to installing? windows?04:14
JohnathonI copied it to a USB using unetbootin from a Windows enviroment04:15
JohnathonThe BIOS is alright set to USB04:15
JohnathonThe live desktop is doing the blue loading screen, which when I chose to install it took quite awhile04:16
holsteinJohnathon: i like to see the desktop, as i said04:16
JohnathonYeah I know it is loading it now04:16
holsteinJohnathon: if you cant get the live CD to load, you will likely have compatibility issues to deal with04:16
JohnathonEven though they are two VERY different distros, how is Puppy loaded with no issues yet Mint and Lubuntu both have failed?04:17
holsteinJohnathon: did you use the vesa driver inthe puppy linux graphics wizard?04:17
JohnathonNope, just put it on the USB using unetbootin from my laptop plugged it into the desktop let it boot came back to see it was waiting for use04:18
JohnathonI've done the same with Mint and Lubuntu but both hang on a blank screen after a period of time04:18
holsteinJohnathon: "nope".. what does "nope" refer to?04:18
holsteinnope, you dont use the vesa driver?04:18
holsteinwhat driver did you use, friend?04:19
JohnathonNo I didn't use any drivers.04:19
holsteinwhat kernel?04:19
JohnathonI just put it on usb like I said.04:19
holsteinJohnathon: yes, you used *some* driver04:19
holsteinJohnathon: and that will be helpful to know04:19
JohnathonWell not that I know of, I just got the first download off the puppy site.04:19
holsteinJohnathon: what operating system are you accustomed to installing? if you dont mind me asking, not to imply you are not "savy", but to possibly related you you some of the basics in a general way based on what you are used to.04:20
holsteinJohnathon: puppy uses a graphics driver.. windows does.. they *all* do04:20
JohnathonYes I know that, but I don't know which one is was since it didn't ask to choose one04:20
holsteinJohnathon: im just proposing that puppy was loading the vesa driver, and you can use that with lubuntu as well04:20
holsteinJohnathon: yeah you know what? that you were using a driver?04:21
holsteinJohnathon: you said "im not using a driver?04:21
JohnathonWell that I knew of I didn't know what one I was using04:21
holsteinits not a big deal to not understand the "jargon"..04:21

holstein!vesa04:22
ubottuvesa is the default video driver if X can't find a better one. Also see !x04:22
holsteinalso, another option i like to try when i have graphics compatibility issues..04:22
holstein!nomodeset04:22
ubottuA common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter04:22
JohnathonI'm still letting the live desktop load, do you want me to reboot and try that?04:23
holsteinJohnathon: unless you are on a p3 with 256 or ram or something ridiculously old, the live desktop should boot fast04:23
holsteinfast-ish.. at least04:23
holsteinor, you have a bad usb stick.. or a bad usb controller.. motherboard. etc04:24
JohnathonThe cpu is solo core 2.6 and 256 ram. So yeah this computer is pretty old...04:24
holsteinbut, you booted puppy from this stick, i assume?04:24
JohnathonYes04:24
holsteinJohnathon: i would run puppy on that04:24
holstein!alternate04:24
ubottuThe alternate CD has been discontinued for the main Ubuntu distro, please use and report any bugs in the !LiveCD04:24
holsteinJohnathon: it could be, you just need to wait longer04:25
holsteinJohnathon: i waited about 20 minutes for lubuntu to load on hardware like that once.. installed.04:25
JohnathonI waited about 4 hours last night, the furtherest it gets is it loops between cursor and moniter saying out of range04:25
holsteinJohnathon: that machine is old.. i would use puppy on there. it'll be nice and fast.. there is one based on ubuntu04:26
holsteinJohnathon: otherwise, you get the mini iso i mentioned before.. install from that.. and add what you want manually.. lxde or lubuntu-desktop or whatever04:27
Johnathon2004 old.. So yeah it might be best. Does the Ubuntu one support almost all of the default packages from Ubuntu?04:27
holsteinJohnathon: i have no idea04:27
holsteinJohnathon: we dont support it, so you'll be on your own, or up to them to support you04:28
JohnathonThen I'll download and install that one. Saves a lot of hassle. Thanks for the help it is much appreciated :)04:28
holsteinJohnathon: otherwise, so the mini and add.. that will install in a resonable amount of time.. like 4 minutes04:28
