[03:05] What's the specs on your computer, and how long a hang? [03:06] 256mb ram, 2.6ghz processor Not sure on gfx card. 30gb hdd. between 10-30 minutes, the furtherst it got was on Mint, it got to a cursor and would loop between that and the moniter being out of range [03:08] 30 minutes is a bit long, but ram is pretty small. I'd recommend the alternate, or purge the slideshow. [03:08] That is what the people at mint said, I tried their 2 distro sorts, and both failed. What I don't under stand is how can Puppy work but these two don't [03:09] Puppy is quite a bit different, if you want to try something else also different, you can always try AntiX. [03:10] I can look into it, but not it got past generating them, now it is sittign at a blank screen [03:11] Could it be gfx issues? [03:14] Anyone? [03:15] hi [03:16] Howdy, you can try to drop to a tty and check the logs. [03:16] How would I do that? [03:17] !tty [03:17] To get to the TTY terminals 1-6, use the keystroke ctrl + alt + F1-F6 respectively (Alt+F7 will get you back to your graphical login). To change the resolution for your TTY, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ChangeTTYResolution [03:18] I have nothing, just a blank screen but ok [03:19] I'm talking from another computer, this one is just sitting on a blank screen and nothing happened when I pressed any of them [03:20] Oh something new, wall of text popped up [03:23] Can't type anything, but what i can see its saying its mounting my USB which it is installing off. and such [03:24] sysnter_do_call+0x12/0x28 === jeanaustinr is now known as jeanaustinr|x === jeanaustinr is now known as jeanaustinr|x [04:09] Can anyone here help me? === jeanaustinr is now known as jeanaustinr|x [04:11] :/ [04:11] !ask | Johnathon [04:11] Johnathon: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience [04:12] I've already said my problem. It takes forever to load then just hangs on a blank screen with no response [04:12] Johnathon: it? [04:12] The computer I am trying to install Lubuntu on [04:12] Johnathon: are you saying, you wont ask your question for me, in detail? [04:12] Johnathon: lubuntu 13.04? [04:13] Yes [04:13] Johnathon: and you confirme the iso? [04:13] !md5 [04:13] To verify your Ubuntu ISO image (or other files for which an MD5 checksum is provided), see http://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM or http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/answers/LQ_ISO/Checking_the_md5sum_in_Windows [04:13] Yes [04:13] Johnathon: does it load the live desktop? [04:13] I'll try now, I just wanted it installed. I'll report back to see if that loads [04:14] !mini [04:14] The Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want. The installer is text based (rather than graphical as used on the Desktop DVD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD [04:14] Johnathon: you can try using those to install from, but i would want to see the desktop load [04:14] Johnathon: what are you used to installing? windows? [04:15] I copied it to a USB using unetbootin from a Windows enviroment [04:15] The BIOS is alright set to USB [04:16] The live desktop is doing the blue loading screen, which when I chose to install it took quite awhile [04:16] Johnathon: i like to see the desktop, as i said [04:16] Yeah I know it is loading it now [04:16] Johnathon: if you cant get the live CD to load, you will likely have compatibility issues to deal with [04:17] Even though they are two VERY different distros, how is Puppy loaded with no issues yet Mint and Lubuntu both have failed? [04:17] Johnathon: did you use the vesa driver inthe puppy linux graphics wizard? [04:18] Nope, just put it on the USB using unetbootin from my laptop plugged it into the desktop let it boot came back to see it was waiting for use [04:18] I've done the same with Mint and Lubuntu but both hang on a blank screen after a period of time [04:18] Johnathon: "nope".. what does "nope" refer to? [04:18] nope, you dont use the vesa driver? [04:19] what driver did you use, friend? [04:19] No I didn't use any drivers. [04:19] what kernel? [04:19] I just put it on usb like I said. [04:19] Johnathon: yes, you used *some* driver [04:19] Johnathon: and that will be helpful to know [04:19] Well not that I know of, I just got the first download off the puppy site. [04:20] Johnathon: what operating system are you accustomed to installing? if you dont mind me asking, not to imply you are not "savy", but to possibly related you you some of the basics in a general way based on what you are used to. [04:20] Johnathon: puppy uses a graphics driver.. windows does.. they *all* do [04:20] Yes I know that, but I don't know which one is was since it didn't ask to choose one [04:20] Johnathon: im just proposing that puppy was loading the vesa driver, and you can use that with lubuntu as well [04:21] Johnathon: yeah you know what? that you were using a driver? [04:21] Johnathon: you said "im not using a driver? [04:21] Well that I knew of I didn't know what one I was using [04:21] its not a big deal to not understand the "jargon".. [04:21] !volunteer [04:21] !volunteers [04:21] The people here are volunteers, your attitude should reflect that. Answers are not always available. See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines [04:22] !vesa [04:22] vesa is the default video driver if X can't find a better one. Also see !x [04:22] also, another option i like to try when i have graphics compatibility issues.. [04:22] !nomodeset [04:22] A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter [04:23] I'm still letting the live desktop load, do you want me to reboot and try that? [04:23] Johnathon: unless you are on a p3 with 256 or ram or something ridiculously old, the live desktop should boot fast [04:23] fast-ish.. at least [04:24] or, you have a bad usb stick.. or a bad usb controller.. motherboard. etc [04:24] The cpu is solo core 2.6 and 256 ram. So yeah this computer is pretty old... [04:24] but, you booted puppy from this stick, i assume? [04:24] Yes [04:24] Johnathon: i would run puppy on that [04:24] !alternate [04:24] The alternate CD has been discontinued for the main Ubuntu distro, please use and report any bugs in the !LiveCD [04:25] Johnathon: it could be, you just need to wait longer [04:25] Johnathon: i waited about 20 minutes for lubuntu to load on hardware like that once.. installed. [04:25] I waited about 4 hours last night, the furtherest it gets is it loops between cursor and moniter saying out of range [04:26] Johnathon: that machine is old.. i would use puppy on there. it'll be nice and fast.. there is one based on ubuntu [04:27] Johnathon: otherwise, you get the mini iso i mentioned before.. install from that.. and add what you want manually.. lxde or lubuntu-desktop or whatever [04:27] 2004 old.. So yeah it might be best. Does the Ubuntu one support almost all of the default packages from Ubuntu? [04:27] Johnathon: i have no idea [04:28] Johnathon: we dont support it, so you'll be on your own, or up to them to support you [04:28] Then I'll download and install that one. Saves a lot of hassle. Thanks for the help it is much appreciated :) [04:28] Johnathon: otherwise, so the mini and add.. that will install in a resonable amount of time.. like 4 minutes [06:51] has the box icon theme set continued at all? [06:54] and is there any yellowish version of it, rather than blue folders? [08:09] buon giorno e buona domenica [08:10] sono un neofita di lubuntu [08:10] lo installato su un IBM R40 [08:11] 512 mb di ram [08:11] e 30 gb hd [08:12] è di default cromium..a quello che ho capito..ma si può mettere opera?
