pink_Hello00:37
pink_may I ask a question? How can I open/launch a program (like firefox) via ssh? I'd like the program runs on the server (lubuntu on the server, putty on windows)00:38
juan_144on command line?00:40
juan_144have you tried firefox00:40
juan_144?00:40
pink_yes on command line. If i send via ssh: firefox (or nohup firefox) it does not start on the server (neither in the client obviusly)00:42
pink_I tried this: http://superuser.com/questions/326206/starting-a-program-on-the-desktop-from-ssh-in-ubuntu but does not work00:42
juan_144what runlevel has the server?00:42
pink_root00:43
pink_(if I understand what runlevel is, I'm newbee)00:43
juan_144runlevel=run mode00:44
juan_144single user00:44
juan_144text mode00:44
juan_144graphical mode00:44
juan_144there are a total of 600:44
juan_1440 halt the system00:45
juan_144100:45
juan_144single user00:45
juan_1442 I dont remember00:45
juan_1443 is multiuser text mode00:45
juan_1444 is unuser00:45
juan_144and 5 s graphical mode00:45
juan_1446 restart the system00:46
pink_I really dont know, the default ones I suppose (just downloaded the iso and flashed over usb)00:47
juan_144what iso?00:47
pink_runlevel n° 200:48
pink_ * 2 Full multi-user mode (Default)00:48
pink_just checked via ssh00:48
juan_144OK, Firefox will not run on that mode00:48
juan_144It needs a graphical server00:49
pink_you mean that will not run from ssh? (because If I start firefox or another program with a GUI, directly from the server, it works)00:50
juan_144then you are not running on runlevel 2 on the server00:51
juan_144and if you call firefox from CLI you will get stuck on it until firefox closes00:52
pink_ok thanks00:54
deckard_hello. Would someone please tell me the command to install Lubuntu?07:17
JohnathonHello all, I seem to have a problem after installing Lubuntu from the alternate installer, it installs fine, but when I boot up it gets to a blank screen with the cursor in the middle then looping to the moniter saying out of range11:20
JohnathonHello?11:48
SonikkuAmericaHello11:49
JohnathonWould you be able to help with "I seem to have a problem after installing Lubuntu from the alternate installer, it installs fine, but when I boot up it gets to a blank screen with the cursor in the middle then looping to the moniter saying out of range"11:51
SonikkuAmericaWell, I'd start by saying "Is there a reason you need to install from the alternate install image?"11:57
JohnathonIt would hang on install not showing anything no matter what I did so someone told me to install it from the alternate iso.11:57
SonikkuAmericaWhat about the mini.iso?11:58
SonikkuAmerica!min11:58
SonikkuAmerica!mini11:58
ubottuThe Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want.  The installer is text based (rather than graphical as used on the Desktop DVD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD11:58
SonikkuAmericaOne sec...11:58
Johnathonsure11:58
JohnathonBut I can't use an online based one since the computer I'm installing it on doesn't have internet11:59
SonikkuAmericaOK yeah, what about the mini.iso?12:06
JohnathonI cant install it since the computer doesnt have access to internet12:06
SonikkuAmericaNow that could be a problem.12:07
SonikkuAmericaOK, what's the targeet hardware?12:07
SonikkuAmerica*target12:08
JohnathonNot sure of gfx but when I boot it into puppy it says it loaded vesa the rest are 30GB HDD 2.6Ghz Processor (Pentium I think), 256 MB of RAM.12:08
SonikkuAmericaOK, that should be plenty of space to install Lubuntu... perhaps your installer image was corrupted?12:09
JohnathonTried it in a VM and it works fine12:09
JohnathonIt is just this computer every distro seems to freak up on, It installs fine, but when it boots the moniter compains about being out of range12:10
SonikkuAmericaMonitor specs? Graphics card? If you can get Puppy to work, run [ lspci ] for that12:11
JohnathonI don't know the gfx card type, I know the moniters model number.12:12
JohnathonThe OS installed fine, but I can't do anything since it is out of range12:12
SonikkuAmericaJohnathon: Can you drop to a tty? (press Ctrl+Alt+F1)12:12
JohnathonNo12:13
SonikkuAmericaDid you try with a LiveCD set to nomodeset?12:14
SonikkuAmerica!nomodeset12:14
ubottuA common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter12:14
JohnathonYes, it ended with the same result execpt it refused to boot I left it for like 5 hours and no desktop what so ever12:15
SonikkuAmericaWell, the last thing I can think of is "Did you use the correct install media for your architecture?12:16
SonikkuAmerica" and that's usually detected.12:16
JohnathonYes, but12:16
JohnathonProgress12:16
=== jeanaustinr is now known as jeanaustinr|x
JohnathonAfter flipping between out of range and the cursor it got to command line via CTRL ALT F112:16
SonikkuAmericaJohnathon: Oh it did. Now you can [ lspci ] and give more specs.12:17
JohnathonA lot piled up on the screen is there anyway to scroll p?12:17
SonikkuAmericaNot in a tty. I need the "Graphics Controller" line.12:18
JohnathonMulltimeadia video controller is the closest it has12:19
SonikkuAmericaTry [ lspci | less ] then. (That is a straight slash (Shift+\))12:20
JohnathonNothing I can see with that. VGA compatible cotroller is the only other thing that seems to be gfx related12:21
SonikkuAmericaAnd what does that line read? [ lspci | grep VGA ]12:22
JohnathonVGA compatible controller: silicon integrated systems [SiS] 65xM650/740 PCI/AGP VGA Display Adapter12:24
SonikkuAmericaThen this page is for you: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Sis12:25
JohnathonThanks, I'll go do that now and report back if anything is still wrong or I don't understand part of it :)12:27
SonikkuAmericaAll right. I have to go now but I'll be back in about 2 hrs12:28
JohnathonShould be still awake12:28
LucreCarotI have a problem with de update and upgrade, the console said:14:26

SonikkuAmericaAre you using LVM?14:29
LucreCarotwhats is LVM?14:29
LucreCarotthe computer have a lot of space14:29
LucreCarotnot I not using LVM14:30
LucreCarotI had to install this?14:30
xnoxLucreCarot: what does: $ sudo lvs14:31
xnoxsays?14:31
LucreCarot LV     VG      Attr     LSize   Pool Origin Data%  Move Log Copy%  Convert   root   lubuntu -wi-ao-- 463,48g                                              swap_1 lubuntu -wi-ao--   1,99g14:32

LucreCarotswap_1 lubuntu -wi-ao--   1,99g14:33
SonikkuAmericaLucreCarot: That only appears if LVM were installed.14:33
LucreCarotok, I run this command and said this14:34
LucreCarotthe lines I paste before14:34
SonikkuAmericaLucreCarot: You'll run into problems with normal updating and upgrading with LVM. You should reinstall without LVM if you don't really need it.14:35
LucreCarotHow I reinstall without LVM?14:35
LucreCarotIf I reinstall I will lost all my software and programmes?14:36
SonikkuAmericaLucreCarot: Pop your live image in and make sure "Use LVM with the new Lubuntu installation" is unchecked. And yes you will lose all that, but there is a way to preserve it:14:36
SonikkuAmericaLucreCarot: To preserve your programs, run [ dpkg --get-selections > installed-software ] and put installed-software on external media. To save your PPAs, copy /etc/apt/sources.list to external media.14:37
LucreCarotOk, thank you very mucho, this is the unique solution? Its impossible desinstall the LVM or something like this?14:38
SonikkuAmericaLucreCarot: And then, to restore them, overwrite /etc/apt/sources.list on the new install with the old one, copy the "installed-software" file to your home dir and run [ dpkg --set-selections < installed-software ] in a terminal.14:38
SonikkuAmericaLucreCarot: Nope. That's the only solution to remove LVM (because that's how the partitioning system is set up.14:39
SonikkuAmerica)14:39
LucreCarotOk! thank you very much for your help!!!! A final question, when is important used the LVM? o for what thing is important used the LVM?14:40
SonikkuAmericaLucreCarot: Logical volume management is good for RAID arrays (daisy-chained drives on data storage systems and the like)14:41
LucreCarotOk14:42
LucreCarotthanks a lot!!!!!!14:42
LucreCarotto reinstall all! jejejejeje14:42
JohnathonI've having a problem starting my Lubuntu, I installed from the alternate image since i was having difficulties loading the original ISO without the installer crashing, on start up I get a cursor in the middle of the screen flashing between that and the moniter being out of range, i can't use CTRL+ALT+f1-f6 without it permantly going to out of range15:40
SonikkuAmericawb15:43
SonikkuAmericaDid you try the steps mentioned on the Web page regarding SiS drivers?15:43
JohnathonIt died, and went back to out of range before I could do it :/15:44
SonikkuAmericaIt ... died? Did you have the thing plugged in?15:44
JohnathonYes.15:44
JohnathonIt just flipped back to out of range15:45
JohnathonIf I got Puppy on it, would I be able to do the steps from there? Or does it have to be done this way15:45
SonikkuAmericaLubuntu is rather specific. I'm suprised the mini.iso wouldn't work. Either way, the installer didn't detect your wireless or wired connection?15:46
JohnathonIt doesn't have internet access at the present moment. I don't know when it will be restored15:47
SonikkuAmericaJohnathon: Well... at this point, I'm outta ideas. I don't think installing any Ubuntu distro (except maybe Server) would work with your present configuration... you'd just need a new machine to begin with.15:49
Johnathon:/ Damn, thanks for all the help. I might as well go get a new computer. Thanks15:52
