[01:56] Hello [01:56] Hi! [01:57] First time on IRC [01:57] So I need help with sound. [01:57] I don't have any at the moment. [01:58] from any of my programs [01:58] and when I play video, [01:58] State your flavor and release number. [01:58] Ubuntu 13.04 [01:58] any video I play goes really quickly [01:58] Youtube, VLC, all of it. [02:00] There are a few solutions I can think of: [02:01] Step A: Head for System Settings. (i.e. Click on the icon with the gear and wrench in the Unity dash, or search the Dash for it and click its icon) [02:01] ok [02:01] Step B: Click on "Sound." [02:02] alright [02:02] Step C: Are any audio devices listed? [02:02] test sound does nothing [02:02] Digital Output (S/PDIF) [02:02] and Speakers [02:03] output 100% [02:03] You tried testing them both? [02:03] oh, hold on [02:03] Oh [02:04] So speakers works. [02:04] And Youtube is normal speed now. [02:04] How in the world did that effect the playback speed? [02:05] There you are. Provided that you have "Speakers" highlighted, you can close the System Settings window now. Congratulations. You're well on your way to a fuller Ubuntu experience! [02:05] (Who knows? I haven't been able to figure that myself.) [02:05] Well thank you for the help. [02:06] Not that it was a baffling case, [02:06] but no one in the ask Ubuntu forums would get back to me [02:06] but hey, we get them all the time. No need to be ashamed. :) [02:07] Okay, I have a related follow up. [02:07] Ask away! [02:08] Is there any way, [02:08] that I can plug in headphones, [02:08] and have the sound only come through them, but not the laptop speakers? [02:09] Simple! Remember the "Sound" dialog we just came from? Simply select whatever the headphones are listed as, then close the window. [02:10] Selecting S/PDIF turns off everything [02:11] What are your headphones plugged into, the standard headphone jack, a USB port, ...? [02:11] Selecting Speakers turns on everything [02:12] standard headphone [02:13] Hmmm... one second. [02:15] parker_: There seems to be an issue on askubuntu.com that matches yours: http://askubuntu.com/questions/293632/sound-problem-on-both-speakers-and-headphones [02:15] You can try some of the solutions there if you wish. [02:16] okay, mine is HP too, [02:17] parker_: Perhaps the guy with the Pavilion dv6 has a good solution. [02:20] Okay I installed the package that it reccomended. [02:21] Now I have to reboot. [02:21] If I don't see you here again, thank you for all of your help. [02:21] OK... you're welcome. [02:25] It worked! [02:27] All set then! [03:58] does anyone here run steam on 12.04? === jeanaustinr is now known as jeanaustinr|x === jeanaustinr is now known as jeanaustinr|x [20:08] Hi, is there anyone here who could help me with an issue with screen resolutions? [20:09] What's wrong with it? [20:10] !fixvideoresolution [20:10] The X Window System is the part of your system that's responsible for graphical output. To restart your X, type « sudo /etc/init.d/?dm restart » in a console - To fix screen resolution or other X problems: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution [20:10] First off I have a CRT monitor [20:11] The default resolution was 1280x1024 [20:11] I changed it to 1600x1200 which is what I normally use [20:11] Everything got smaller but stayed blurry basically [20:12] It's not changing the actual resolution of the monitor [20:13] I'm running a live CD by the way to test things out [20:41] I accidently rebooted, that command to restart x did not work, command not found [20:41] I tries restart lightdm, it restarted but didn't change a thing [20:42] Any other way to force the monitor resolution to change?
