vale_phillw installing 12.04 worked :D00:14
vale_I just wonder why the heck wasn't 13.04 working00:14
vale_anyhow, thank you for the hint, I would had never thought about it00:15
phillwvale_: excellent, now take your life in your hands and follow the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/Hardware00:15
phillwas it says, if you do not know ho to update the table... ask!00:16
phillw*how*00:16
vale_even if I have 12.04 installed would it be valid?00:17
phillwby the way, to paste into a terminal, it is CTRL+SHIFT+v00:17
vale_yup00:18
phillwvale, the insides of your computer do not change depending on what operating system you use :D00:18
vale_LEL, right XD00:19
vale_I thought it was like a bug report, which also depends on the OS00:19
phillwvale_: the idea of having a hardware report in, is that if you say "it works on 12.04, but does not on 13,04", they can look and see what changed that would prevent it working on the same hardware. The wiki page that has the details on reporting your hardware does go into a bit more detail.00:25
vale_oh, now I get it00:26
vale_btw I'm installing the sofwtare needed for that report00:26
phillwvale_: do you have a launchpad account?00:33
vale_nope00:33
vale_and it seems the pc has just crashed :S00:33
phillwvale_:  you need one to report bugs.00:33
vale_not ubuntu one?00:34
phillwif you have a ubuntu launchpad account, that is what is required.00:34
phillwwas there anything obvious on the crash when you tried to install the applications to get a hardware review?00:35
vale_nah it didn't crashed, it just frozed for a bit, I guess too many chrome tabs opened00:36
phillwchrome can eat memory!00:36
vale_but it seems I can't login on the wiki, since the login page doesn't load00:36
vale_it sure does, I need a lighter browser00:37
vale_I only have a PIII @500 MHz00:37
phillwhas the install of the new applications happened yet?00:37
phillwvale_: we're switching back to ffox in 13.10, it is now the lighter browser.00:38
vale_is it? mh, I think I need something waaaaaaay lighter00:39
vale_nope, no new installation for the moment, nor updates00:39
phillwfor a really low spec machine, there is one much lighter, just not fully official.00:39
vale_which one?00:39
vale_ok, even if I logged in it says I can't modify the page :S00:40
vale_if I give you the pastebin and other things, can you do it?00:41
phillwyes, I will edit the page up. i do need some sort of contact name at some point... wiki / launchpad address etc.00:42
vale_mk00:43
phillwthe low resource browser is xombrero (used to be called xxxterm) it is avaialable from https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-dev/+archive/non-official-apps00:43
vale_http://pastebin.com/ZUracGfP it's a custom desktop PC, asus MB P3B-F00:43
vale_ok, thanks00:44
vale_btw it's cool how lubuntu recognized the network connection via lan cable to my laptop00:47
vale_on windows i've spent like 3 hours connecting it00:47
vale_i share the web connection on that computer with a cross lan cable00:48
vale_my name on the wiki is vale_maio00:48
phillwvale_: I cannot find you on the ubuntu wiki area, can you paste your link up, thanks00:54
vale_sure00:55
vale_mh, where do I find the link to my user page? :S00:57
phillwhave you got a launchpad account?00:58
phillwvale_: if you have not got an launchpad address, go get one.. you will need it for reporting bugs etc. It is quite easy to sign up to... https://login.launchpad.net/+new_account,01:00
vale_indeed01:00
vale_i have one01:01
phillwwhat is the link to it?01:01
vale_https://launchpad.net/~vale-maio201:01
phillwthat's pretty recent :D01:02
vale_indeed01:02
phillwGive me a few minutes whilst I get your hardware details added into the table.01:02
vale_I've just logged in01:02
vale_ok01:02
phillwvale_: have a check on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/Hardware and ensure your details are correct.01:11
vale_everything's fine, except for the graphic card01:12
vale_it's an asus v300501:12
vale_32 MB RAM01:12
phillwthose details should be in the 'specifications' part, the title for a customised machine is the mother board.01:13
vale_yes, I'm taking about that01:14
vale_the specs say it's a SiS 30001:15
vale_anyway, thank you for your help, it's really appreciated01:16
phillwvale_: no, YOUR specs say it is, that was a search of your computer....01:16
phillwwith personal stuff stripped out.01:16
vale_yes i saw that, but I personally mounted an asus V300501:16
vale_which is curious, since windows was telling me I had the same GPU model before installing the appropriate driver01:17
phillwwell, it appears your computer under 12.04 cannot 'see' it. If you have it and it cannot be seen, then you can now look p as to why.01:17
vale_maybe it cannot see it, but aat least it works pretty well01:18
phillwwell, it may work better if it can... as the ubuntu forums are still down after some saddo cracker decided to attack an F/OSS team, I cannot give you the link to where to get further information.01:19
vale_yeah, I saw that, kinda sad01:20
vale_well, I gotta go now, thank you again for your help01:20
phillwyou're more than welcome. i hope I have at least solved a couple of issues!01:21
vale_you sure did!01:22
vale_bye!01:22
Guest12284im running lubuntu 13.04 - 64bit on an acer aspire s3 and i was wondering if anyone could help me figure out how to get controll of the screen brightness?02:43
phillwGuest12284: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireS302:45
phillwI'm hoping that does not point to the forum area, as it is currently 'down'.02:46
Guest12284nah it seems to work .. i think i tried that in a different forum that i was looking through but ill go through it again thanks02:47
Guest12284looks like my grub file is blank ... uh oh02:49
Unit193What "grub file"?02:50
Guest12284sudo gedit /etc/defaults/grub02:50
Guest12284that grub02:50
Guest12284/etc/defaults/grub02:50
Unit193No, it's /etc/default/grub02:51
Guest12284ha typo on the webpage02:51
Unit193Bleh.02:52
phillwGuest12284: which wiki page?02:54
Guest12284https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireS302:54
Guest12284it doesnt work anyway02:54
Guest12284...at least on my model02:55
Guest12284it says "defaults" rather than "default" under the section about screen brightness02:55
phillwGuest12284: corrected, thanks for reporting it.02:57
Unit193http://askubuntu.com/questions/75219/screen-brightness-not-adjustable-for-acer-aspire-s3 though I didn't actually read it. >_>02:57
phillwyou have now contributed to the greater good in reporting an error on a wiki page.02:58
Unit193After you edit the config, and update grub, you have to reboot.02:59
Guest12284does it say that in the wiki ? or is that more or less a common sense thing ?02:59
phillwUnit193: the person who wrote the commands into the wiki page can not C&P, the source page they referred to states03:02
phillwsudo gedit /etc/default/grub03:02
phillwmeh....03:02
kristonHi, how can I add a search box to the Lubuntu menu like I have in Xubuntu and other environments?03:09
phillwkriston: I've never run xubuntu, so you will have to be a bit more specific as to what you want to achieve.03:15
kristonphillw: Thanks.  In some desktop environments there is a little box that appears.  It's a search box where I can type "Terminal" and when I type it the results of that search appear from which I can choose the results.03:15
kristonIn regular Ubuntu, it's the box that appears when you click the Ubuntu icon.  You start typing what you want in that box and the results start appearing instantly.  I see it in the other variants of Ubuntu but not in Lubuntu.  I think some people call it "live search."03:17
phillwkriston: it is most likely disabled (not installed) by default owing to it requiring too much resources for low-spec machines. If you find its name in, say, xubuntu, you can most likely add it using apt-get install.03:26
kristonphillw: I think you're right.  It does require lots of resources.  I'll keep looking.  Thanks!03:27
phillwkriston: it is for this reason we have LSC as our software center, the others are just too hungry for resources on the lowest specification machines.03:28
kristonphillw: Yeah, thanks, that didn't occur to me, but I think I get it now.  Thanks again.03:29
phillwyou're welcome!03:29
kristonIt was one of those cool features but I didn't realize it involved a significant amount of background task resources to actually index the system for it to work.03:34
kristonHow do I add things to the LXDE menu?03:36
kristonWell, actually, it will be a search box, probably not able to do that.  I was just wondering.03:40
phillwkriston: the way I know is  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Windows#How_to_make.2BAC8-add_an_application_to_the_.22start.22_menu.03:41
phillwThere may be an easier way (try lubuntu tweaks)03:42
kristonExcellent suggestion.  THanks.03:42
Unit193xfce4-appfinder really isn't heavy, it's the Alt+F2 application.03:55
vychunehello everyone!04:20
kristonDoes Alt-F2 do a live search as I type a command, like "Terminal," into the box?04:20
vychunekriston: no its looking for a Linux command such as "man startx" or something like that04:22
kristonvychune: Oh, that's not what I'm looking for, but since live search is outside the scope of the low-resource LXDE, I'm probably looking in the wrong place.04:23
vychuneyou can install a program for it though04:23
kristonWhat program?  I am looking for a box that lets me do a live search in the main menu or in the panel.04:24
vychunei ant to say gnome-do but thats not lxde04:27
vychune*want04:27
ianorlinhmm pcmanfm doesn't have applications inside of it as a search criteria04:28
ianorlinoh actually hitting super+R for run brings up a  box that does that04:30
ianorlinif you start typing it will try to complete it or is that only if you have launched it in terminal04:30
vychunekriston: you want kupfer04:31
kristonInteresting04:32
vychunei'm about to get it myself lol04:32
kristonHonestly, I have confusion.04:32
vychunehey guys, i just tried to install netbeans and got an installArchives() error04:33
vychuneany idea what happened?04:33
vychunekriston: do you mean you are confused?04:34
kristonYep04:34
vychuneabout?04:35
kristonAbout the way to add a live search box to my LXDE menu.04:36
vychunewait....like the one in windows 7?04:36
kristonYes, and all the other variants of Ubuntu.04:36
vychunexubuntu doesnt have that lol04:38
kristonI installed it yesterday and it does have it.04:38
vychunerally?04:38
vychunereally*04:38
vychunewhen did that happen? lol04:38
kristonYeah.  I was installing some of the GNOME-like "Start Menu" derivatives to see which ones had the live search feature.04:39
vychuneoh i thought you meant pre installed lol04:40
vychunethose dont work in lxde?04:40
holstein!info kupfer04:40
ubottukupfer (source: kupfer): fast and lightweight desktop summoner/launcher. In component universe, is optional. Version 0+v208-2 (raring), package size 810 kB, installed size 2862 kB04:40
kristonIf they do, I don't know how to add them to lxde04:40
holstein^^ i just add that, which is gnome-do/synapse like..04:41
vychuneholstein: thanks for that04:41
holsteini think that is "live search"04:41
vychunei told him about that already04:41
kristonYes, like gnome-do.  But "live search" is a microsoft term people don't like to hear.  And vychune did mention that.04:41
holsteinkriston: i dont care what im hearing.. the issue is, i dont know what that is04:42
vychunehe wants it in the menu like Windows 704:42
holsteinkriston: pretent i dont use windows, since i dont04:42
holsteinkriston: what are you wanting?04:42
kristonWell, like regular Ubuntu more like.04:42
kristonScroll up.  We solved it already.  But, thanks anyway.04:42
vychuneholstein:http://youtu.be/KhxFmU0xlow04:44
ianorlinhitting super+r to run things also gets an autocomplete which can be helpful04:46
vychuneianorlin:thats for commandline, not what he wanted04:47
holsteinlooks like kupfer to me04:47
vychuneyep04:48

holsteinyou can specify it with a custom xorg.conf.. i usually just fire up a live CD like puppy or knoppix and grab the xorg from there04:56

AmkeiAfter upgrading Lubuntu 11.10 to 12.xx (using it in a VirtualBox) the mouse-wheel is disabled. Does anyone know where to configure mouse-types/wheel?15:27
holsteinAmkei: that will be challenging.. i would just reinstall guest additions15:28
AmkeiThats the first thing I'd done15:28
holsteinAmkei: then, you understand it is not a mouse-wheel.. it is passing the hardware through virtually15:30
holsteinyou can try booting a 12.04 live CD in the guest, to confirm that is "should" be working out-of-the-box15:32

joshuhi I'm having a problem with  "No protocol specified, Error: Can't open display :0"15:35
holsteinjoshu: with what? the guest OS inside virtualbox?15:36
joshuI've got xserver-xorg and lightdm installed on ubuntu mini iso. I've tried export DISPLAY=:0 but that doesn't help. I don't know what packages I need or what config is required to solve this error.15:36
joshuholstein this is installed on an HP laptop15:37
holsteinjoshu: you shoul be able to pull in lubuntu from lubuntu-desktop metapackage15:37
holsteinshould*15:37
joshuholstein will it not work without the full lubuntu? I'm trying to build a minimal system I don't need a desktop GUI etc15:38
holsteinjoshu: it worked for me, but i dont know where the minimal iso support channel would be15:38
holsteinjoshu: if you dont want a GUI, there should be no need for lightdm or xserver15:38
joshuholstein wait you've done this from ubuntu mini?15:38
holsteinjoshu: i have used the ubuntu mini iso..15:39
holstein!mini15:39
ubottuThe Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want.  The installer is text based (rather than graphical as used on the Desktop DVD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD15:39
joshuholstein I should have been more specific. I just need lightdm and when a user logs in I want to start an xfreerdp session nothing else15:39
joshuholstein perhaps as you have experience with mini you can suggest what I'm doing wrong. I've tried googling but with no luck15:39
holsteinjoshu: i have had mixed luck with that setup in the past.. sometimes i needed to add more packages15:40
holsteinjoshu: i always found documentation with the thin client helpful15:40
joshuholstein damn I need to figure this out. I didn't realise it would be so difficult to get a freerdp session running from lightdm15:42
holsteinjoshu: ask what the guest needs15:42
joshuholstein sorry I don't follow?15:42
holsteinjoshu: for thinlinc, the guest needs to have XFCE installed15:42
holsteinjoshu: if you dont have all the packages, you will get an error15:42
joshuholstein I'm not using thinlinc.15:43
holsteinjoshu: correct15:43
holsteinjoshu: so, you view the *specific* documentation for what you are using15:43
holsteinjoshu: and, you'l see what the requirements are, and what you need. which in the case of thinlinc, from my recent first hand experience, was all of xfce15:44
holsteinjoshu: for freenx, the requirements were different, though i did that years ago, so i didnt mention the details15:44
