[00:14] phillw installing 12.04 worked :D [00:14] I just wonder why the heck wasn't 13.04 working [00:15] anyhow, thank you for the hint, I would had never thought about it [00:15] vale_: excellent, now take your life in your hands and follow the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/Hardware [00:16] as it says, if you do not know ho to update the table... ask! [00:16] *how* [00:17] even if I have 12.04 installed would it be valid? [00:17] by the way, to paste into a terminal, it is CTRL+SHIFT+v [00:18] yup [00:18] vale, the insides of your computer do not change depending on what operating system you use :D [00:19] LEL, right XD [00:19] I thought it was like a bug report, which also depends on the OS [00:25] vale_: the idea of having a hardware report in, is that if you say "it works on 12.04, but does not on 13,04", they can look and see what changed that would prevent it working on the same hardware. The wiki page that has the details on reporting your hardware does go into a bit more detail. [00:26] oh, now I get it [00:26] btw I'm installing the sofwtare needed for that report [00:33] vale_: do you have a launchpad account? [00:33] nope [00:33] and it seems the pc has just crashed :S [00:33] vale_: you need one to report bugs. [00:34] not ubuntu one? [00:34] if you have a ubuntu launchpad account, that is what is required. [00:35] was there anything obvious on the crash when you tried to install the applications to get a hardware review? [00:36] nah it didn't crashed, it just frozed for a bit, I guess too many chrome tabs opened [00:36] chrome can eat memory! [00:36] but it seems I can't login on the wiki, since the login page doesn't load [00:37] it sure does, I need a lighter browser [00:37] I only have a PIII @500 MHz [00:37] has the install of the new applications happened yet? [00:38] vale_: we're switching back to ffox in 13.10, it is now the lighter browser. [00:39] is it? mh, I think I need something waaaaaaay lighter [00:39] nope, no new installation for the moment, nor updates [00:39] for a really low spec machine, there is one much lighter, just not fully official. [00:39] which one? [00:40] ok, even if I logged in it says I can't modify the page :S [00:41] if I give you the pastebin and other things, can you do it? [00:42] yes, I will edit the page up. i do need some sort of contact name at some point... wiki / launchpad address etc. [00:43] mk [00:43] the low resource browser is xombrero (used to be called xxxterm) it is avaialable from https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-dev/+archive/non-official-apps [00:43] http://pastebin.com/ZUracGfP it's a custom desktop PC, asus MB P3B-F [00:44] ok, thanks [00:47] btw it's cool how lubuntu recognized the network connection via lan cable to my laptop [00:47] on windows i've spent like 3 hours connecting it [00:48] i share the web connection on that computer with a cross lan cable [00:48] my name on the wiki is vale_maio [00:54] vale_: I cannot find you on the ubuntu wiki area, can you paste your link up, thanks [00:55] sure [00:57] mh, where do I find the link to my user page? :S [00:58] have you got a launchpad account? [01:00] vale_: if you have not got an launchpad address, go get one.. you will need it for reporting bugs etc. It is quite easy to sign up to... https://login.launchpad.net/+new_account, [01:00] indeed [01:01] i have one [01:01] what is the link to it? [01:01] https://launchpad.net/~vale-maio2 [01:02] that's pretty recent :D [01:02] indeed [01:02] Give me a few minutes whilst I get your hardware details added into the table. [01:02] I've just logged in [01:02] ok [01:11] vale_: have a check on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/Hardware and ensure your details are correct. [01:12] everything's fine, except for the graphic card [01:12] it's an asus v3005 [01:12] 32 MB RAM [01:13] those details should be in the 'specifications' part, the title for a customised machine is the mother board. [01:14] yes, I'm taking about that [01:15] the specs say it's a SiS 300 [01:16] anyway, thank you for your help, it's really appreciated [01:16] vale_: no, YOUR specs say it is, that was a search of your computer.... [01:16] with personal stuff stripped out. [01:16] yes i saw that, but I personally mounted an asus V3005 [01:17] which is curious, since windows was telling me I had the same GPU model before installing the appropriate driver [01:17] well, it appears your computer under 12.04 cannot 'see' it. If you have it and it cannot be seen, then you can now look p as to why. [01:18] maybe it cannot see it, but aat least it works pretty well [01:19] well, it may work better if it can... as the ubuntu forums are still down after some saddo cracker decided to attack an F/OSS team, I cannot give you the link to where to get further information. [01:20] yeah, I saw that, kinda sad [01:20] well, I gotta go now, thank you again for your help [01:21] you're more than welcome. i hope I have at least solved a couple of issues! [01:22] you sure did! [01:22] bye! [02:43] im running lubuntu 13.04 - 64bit on an acer aspire s3 and i was wondering if anyone could help me figure out how to get controll of the screen brightness? [02:45] Guest12284: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireS3 [02:46] I'm hoping that does not point to the forum area, as it is currently 'down'. [02:47] nah it seems to work .. i think i tried that in a different forum that i was looking through but ill go through it again thanks [02:49] looks like my grub file is blank ... uh oh [02:50] What "grub file"? [02:50] sudo gedit /etc/defaults/grub [02:50] that grub [02:50] /etc/defaults/grub [02:51] No, it's /etc/default/grub [02:51] ha typo on the webpage [02:52] Bleh. [02:54] Guest12284: which wiki page? [02:54] https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireS3 [02:54] it doesnt work anyway [02:55] ...at least on my model [02:55] it says "defaults" rather than "default" under the section about screen brightness [02:57] Guest12284: corrected, thanks for reporting it. [02:57] http://askubuntu.com/questions/75219/screen-brightness-not-adjustable-for-acer-aspire-s3 though I didn't actually read it. >_> [02:58] you have now contributed to the greater good in reporting an error on a wiki page. [02:59] After you edit the config, and update grub, you have to reboot. [02:59] does it say that in the wiki ? or is that more or less a common sense thing ? [03:02] Unit193: the person who wrote the commands into the wiki page can not C&P, the source page they referred to states [03:02] sudo gedit /etc/default/grub [03:02] meh.... [03:09] Hi, how can I add a search box to the Lubuntu menu like I have in Xubuntu and other environments? [03:15] kriston: I've never run xubuntu, so you will have to be a bit more specific as to what you want to achieve. [03:15] phillw: Thanks. In some desktop environments there is a little box that appears. It's a search box where I can type "Terminal" and when I type it the results of that search appear from which I can choose the results. [03:17] In regular Ubuntu, it's the box that appears when you click the Ubuntu icon. You start typing what you want in that box and the results start appearing instantly. I see it in the other variants of Ubuntu but not in Lubuntu. I think some people call it "live search." [03:26] kriston: it is most likely disabled (not installed) by default owing to it requiring too much resources for low-spec machines. If you find its name in, say, xubuntu, you can most likely add it using apt-get install. [03:27] phillw: I think you're right. It does require lots of resources. I'll keep looking. Thanks! [03:28] kriston: it is for this reason we have LSC as our software center, the others are just too hungry for resources on the lowest specification machines. [03:29] phillw: Yeah, thanks, that didn't occur to me, but I think I get it now. Thanks again. [03:29] you're welcome! [03:34] It was one of those cool features but I didn't realize it involved a significant amount of background task resources to actually index the system for it to work. [03:36] How do I add things to the LXDE menu? [03:40] Well, actually, it will be a search box, probably not able to do that. I was just wondering. [03:41] kriston: the way I know is https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Windows#How_to_make.2BAC8-add_an_application_to_the_.22start.22_menu. [03:42] There may be an easier way (try lubuntu tweaks) [03:42] Excellent suggestion. THanks. [03:55] xfce4-appfinder really isn't heavy, it's the Alt+F2 application. [04:20] hello everyone! [04:20] Does Alt-F2 do a live search as I type a command, like "Terminal," into the box? [04:22] kriston: no its looking for a Linux command such as "man startx" or something like that [04:23] vychune: Oh, that's not what I'm looking for, but since live search is outside the scope of the low-resource LXDE, I'm probably looking in the wrong place. [04:23] you can install a program for it though [04:24] What program? I am looking for a box that lets me do a live search in the main menu or in the panel. [04:27] i ant to say gnome-do but thats not lxde [04:27] *want [04:28] hmm pcmanfm doesn't have applications inside of it as a search criteria [04:30] oh actually hitting super+R for run brings up a box that does that [04:30] if you start typing it will try to complete it or is that only if you have launched it in terminal [04:31] kriston: you want kupfer [04:32] Interesting [04:32] i'm about to get it myself lol [04:32] Honestly, I have confusion. [04:33] hey guys, i just tried to install netbeans and got an installArchives() error [04:33] any idea what happened? [04:34] kriston: do you mean you are confused? [04:34] Yep [04:35] about? [04:36] About the way to add a live search box to my LXDE menu. [04:36] wait....like the one in windows 7? [04:36] Yes, and all the other variants of Ubuntu. [04:38] xubuntu doesnt have that lol [04:38] I installed it yesterday and it does have it. [04:38] rally? [04:38] really* [04:38] when did that happen? lol [04:39] Yeah. I was installing some of the GNOME-like "Start Menu" derivatives to see which ones had the live search feature. [04:40] oh i thought you meant pre installed lol [04:40] those dont work in lxde? [04:40] !info kupfer [04:40] kupfer (source: kupfer): fast and lightweight desktop summoner/launcher. In component universe, is optional. Version 0+v208-2 (raring), package size 810 kB, installed size 2862 kB [04:40] If they do, I don't know how to add them to lxde [04:41] ^^ i just add that, which is gnome-do/synapse like.. [04:41] holstein: thanks for that [04:41] i think that is "live search" [04:41] i told him about that already [04:41] Yes, like gnome-do. But "live search" is a microsoft term people don't like to hear. And vychune did mention that. [04:42] kriston: i dont care what im hearing.. the issue is, i dont know what that is [04:42] he wants it in the menu like Windows 7 [04:42] kriston: pretent i dont use windows, since i dont [04:42] kriston: what are you wanting? [04:42] Well, like regular Ubuntu more like. [04:42] Scroll up. We solved it already. But, thanks anyway. [04:44] holstein:http://youtu.be/KhxFmU0xlow [04:46] hitting super+r to run things also gets an autocomplete which can be helpful [04:47] ianorlin:thats for commandline, not what he wanted [04:47] looks like kupfer to me [04:48] yep [04:49] oh [04:50] anybody know how to fix the slowness with ATI rage 128 pro cards? [04:50] vychune: vesa driver ;) [04:51] :/ [04:52] caant wait to get a new card [04:53] oh great x crashed [04:54] holstein: name of the driver? might have to install from command line [04:55] !vesa [04:55] vesa is the default video driver if X can't find a better one. Also see !x [04:56] you can specify it with a custom xorg.conf.. i usually just fire up a live CD like puppy or knoppix and grab the xorg from there [04:57] Unit193: o/ don't remember where i've seen you but hey! [04:57] Howdy again! [04:57] oh yeah ubuntu tn right? [04:58] Yep. [04:58] (howdy clicked my memory) [04:58] Ahaha! Nice. :P [04:58] good times [04:59] bu anywho, there's no better driver for this? [04:59] vychune: no [04:59] support for that hardware likely wont get any "better" [05:00] ati isnt likely to do any new development for it anytime soon [05:00] i know that [05:00] yeah [05:00] but what about the last one to come out? [05:01] vychune: try it [05:01] i could if i knew how to get it [05:01] !ati [05:01] For Ati/NVidia/Matrox video cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VideoDriverHowto [05:02] ^^ thats what i always refer to.. but you might need to go to the amd site for latest drivers [05:02] gotta lov that bot [05:21] hit the dng wifi switch [05:24] holstein: trying it now [06:45] does lubuntu have a driver for graphics card Radeon HD4200 Series? [06:47] You can check for additional drivers in "Software Sources" [06:48] I did but i dont this my distribution supports my graphics card any more because of the new kernal raring ringtail has [06:51] the driver only supports Xorg 6.9 to Xserver 1.12 and Kernel version up to 3.4 [06:52] Do you now what linux distribution might have this? [06:54] :) [06:54] Nope, though I'd hope they'd update it... [06:56] Yea i dont think they'd update these graphics cards no more :( its a legacy driver [06:58] So much for lubuntu trying to run on "old" computers.
