kothzQuick question: when I try to modify the date/time through settings > date & time, I get a message: "Error accessing system permissions: Error initializing authority: Could not connect: No such file or directory" ... all of the other settings interfaces work.12:03
kothzA quick hop, skip and a jump through Google didn't produce anything immediately obvious12:03
bgardnerkothz: Run 'time-admin' from a terminal and see if you get more informative output12:05
kothzbgardner: first .config/ibus/bus wasn't owned by root.  fixed that.  now: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory12:06
kothzbgardner: now that one google seems to recognize... bbs12:08
bgardnerkothz: Ok12:08
flipper88_flAre the xubunbtu/ubuntu forums open to the public as of yet?12:09

elfyyou'll get up to date information either in ubuntu.discourse.org or #ubuntuforums12:14
elfyflipper88_fl: take that to #ubuntuforums - but the answer is likely to not be what you want12:14
elfyit's offtopic for here anyway12:15

xubuntu325i want to convert some old Dell pcs t12:25
xubuntu325I want to convert tham to thin client and connect to Windows RDP12:26
xubuntu325Is there a small version of Ubuntu with just the features I need for thios12:26
knome!minimal | xubuntu32512:27
ubottuxubuntu325: The Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want.  The installer is text based (rather than graphical as used on the Desktop DVD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD12:27
knomexubuntu325, you can use that and install only the packages you need12:27
xubuntu325Which is the best verion to use12:28
knomexubuntu325, i just answered you12:28
Sysifor just running RDP. probably LTS12:29
knomeright, "version".12:29

=== xubuntu836 is now known as adamus
=== adamus is now known as adamus2
adamus2I asked this 12 hours ago but nobody answered, hope it's not fearsomely bad netiquette to ask again: anybody out there know what could be the problem with video and dvd playback after upgrading from 12.10 to 13.04? I fixed it in vlc by selecting the option "x11" video, but banshee, parole etc are still foobarred13:00
bgardneradamus2: Foobarred in what way, exactly?13:03
adamus2both banshee and parole cannot survive an attempt to play a video. they crash.13:03
bgardneradamus2: Try running either from a terminal and see if you get more informative output.13:04
adamus2The program 'Banshee' received an X Window System error.     This probably reflects a bug in the program.     The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.       (Details: serial 44 error_code 11 request_code 149 minor_code 19)13:05
adamus2Either someone just stole some of my RAM chips or that's not true...13:06
adamus2I googled it and that's where I got the solution for vlc from. But I can't find a way to tell Banshee and Parole to do what vlc is doing when I choose x11 video forit13:07
bgardneradamus2: Bear with me, that's kind of a generic error so my research is slow.13:10
adamus2no hurry. it's been killing me for days.13:11
bgardneradamus2: Does Parole crash with the same error if run from a terminal?13:11
adamus2let me see.13:12
GridCubeadamus2: what video drivers are you using?13:15
GridCubeadamus2: can you login using the guest account and see if your playing videos fails the same?13:16
adamus2bgardner: yes, parole gives same message13:16
=== azeam_afk is now known as azeam
adamus2gridcube: re guest account - not done that before - re video drivers - tried to work that out yesterday, didn't succeed13:17
adamus2sorry, a bit lame. where in xubuntu do you tell?13:17
GridCubeadamus2: what do you mean bu didn't succeed?13:17
GridCubeadamus2: to see what drivers you are using you open the Software Sources manager, from the ubuntu software center or standalone from the settings manager and go to the last tab thats "aditional drivers"13:18
GridCubethere you will see the list of available drivers for your computer13:19
GridCubehttp://techhamlet.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/software-sources-550x401.jpg13:20
adamus2GridCube: I don't have such an option in my settings manager. obviously not got it installed if that's possible. is there a cli command for it13:22
adamus2no software sources manager, i mean13:22
GridCubeadamus2: if you are using xubuntu 13.04 you do13:22
GridCubeyou can access it from the ubuntu software center then13:23
GridCubeim pretty sure it is on the settings manager but i cant recall now to test it13:23
adamus2can you upgrade ubuntu without upgrading xubuntu? if not, then I'm on xubuntu 13.04 and I don't have a 'software sources' manager in my settings manager. i'll look into it though - sounds important :S13:24
GridCubeadamus2: its called "software & updates" on the settings manager13:25
GridCubehttp://www.dedoimedo.com/images/computers_years/2013_1/xubuntu-ringtail-nvidia-settings.jpg adamus2 see13:27
adamus2GridCube: aha. Then my Additional Drivers panel is empty. Nothing listed for video drivers or anything.13:27
GridCubeok then13:28
GridCubeon a terminal run: lspci | grep "VGA"13:28
GridCubeand paste that line here13:28
adamus200:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)13:29
GridCubeok then generic drivers should be good13:30
GridCubenow check that you are trully using generic drivers, go to /etc/X11/ and see that there is NOT a file named xorg.conf13:32
GridCubeif there is an xorg.conf file thats wrong, you dont want one for generic drivers13:32
Sysiadamus2: do you have gstreamer0.10-vaapi installed?13:32
adamus2I don't have an xorg.conf in my /etc dir13:33
adamus2and I haven't got gstreamer0.10-vaapi either13:34
adamus2is it good or bad?13:35
Sysitry installing that and i965-va-driver13:35
Sysithen you may need to reboot13:35
adamus2I've got xserver-xorg-video-intel - not specific enough?13:38
Sysiva-api is for video playback hardware acceleration13:39
GridCubethe i965 driver seems to be the one you need adamus2 http://h-node.org/videocards/view/es/106/Intel-Corporation-Mobile-4-Series-Chipset-Integrated-Graphics-Controller--rev-07-13:40
Sysi(on intel gpu:s)13:40
adamus2GridCube: probably a stupid question, but that page says "i915" not i96513:44
GridCubeoh yeah i retyped what Sysi said, the page use a different one, search what the page says in the software center13:45
GridCubei91513:45
GridCubeyou can also add the x-swat ppa for ultra updated drivers https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates13:46
SysiI don't think it's driver issue (might still be)13:47
Sysixorg/gstreamer/application problem would be more likely13:47
GridCubemaybe13:48
GridCubeadamus2: have you installed the xubuntu-restricted-extras right?13:48
bgardneradamus2: Just to clarify one item, GridCube asked you to check that you didn't have a file at /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and you said you had no file at /etc/xorg.conf - which is not the same.13:48
adamus2let me check13:48
adamus2let me check that too13:48
adamus2no xorg.conf file in /etc/X1113:49
GridCube:) thats good13:49
GridCubeyou have generic drivers then13:49
adamus2got that restricted extras pkg too13:49
GridCubeok13:50
adamus2i'm adding that x-swat ppa13:50
GridCubeadamus2: could you try to log in as guest and try a video, it could be, it sometimes is, that you dragged a wrong config file from the upgrade and its the one messing things around13:51
GridCubeit could be as simple as that13:51
adamus2ok. let me install that x-swat ppa first then i'll reboot. what should the type/location/components for that url be in a ppa config line? deb https://launchpad....../... raring ???13:52
GridCubeadamus2: clic on "read about installing"13:53
adamus2the video's working again in banshee and parole14:32
adamus2that's great.14:32
GridCubewhat did you did?14:32
adamus2was a combination or one of adding the gstreamer0.10-vaapi pkg, the i965-va-driver, adding that ubuntu-x-swat ppa and rebooting. but something caused my window manager to lose the window frames... or even just to lose the window manager?14:36
adamus2my windows are not controllable.14:37
bgardneradamus2: Sounds like your WM died, yes.14:37
bgardneradamus2: If you can get to a terminal, do sudo service lightdm start14:38
adamus2i am using xfce and starting x from the cli - it's in a config file, right?14:38
bgardneradamus2: Oh, startx?14:38
adamus2yep14:38
bgardneradamus2: Hmm, I haven't done that in ages - not sure if what I said before is still appropriate for a startx'ed session.14:39
adamus2ok, i'm only doing that because i have done it since i can remember.14:40
adamus2i guess i should set up the system to go straight into x - do you know the place to set that up?14:40
bgardneradamus2: What's your /etc/issue contents?14:41
adamus2Ubuntu 13.04 \n \l14:41
bgardneradamus2: Dumb question next - how did you first turn off GUI booting after install?  Or did you install server and add X later?14:42
adamus2hmmm, i have no recollection. sorry. my memory is shot by chronic sleep deprivation.14:44
bgardneradamus2: Okay, one moment.14:44
bgardneradamus2: Okay, what output do you get from this command: cat /etc/default/grub | grep GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT14:46
adamus2cat /etc/default/grub | grep GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT14:47
adamus2oops.14:47
bgardneradamus2: :D14:48
adamus2GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text"14:48
bgardneradamus2: Okay, I believe you want to change that to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"14:49
bgardneradamus2: Then do: sudo update-grub14:50
Sysiadamus2: remove /cache/sessions (and run xfwm4 --replace)14:50
adamus2ok. allow me to leave the chat temporarily.....14:51
bgardneradamus2: Ok14:51
GridCubeadamus2: you might need a different dm, why dont you try installing gdm?14:52
GridCubesudo apt-get install gdm14:52
adamus2ok14:52
GridCubethen you can simply start the dm using the service, sudo service gdm start14:52
