=== HisaoNakai is now known as The_Empire === The_Empire is now known as HisaoNakai [18:54] hi everyone === mauro is now known as Guest21966 [18:55] hello [18:56] i'm new to ubuntu studio [18:56] anyine who can give me any tips? [19:03] Guest21966: What kind of help do you need? [19:04] sorry zequence i'm running low bat [19:04] i'll have to log out and power the laptop [19:04] back in a while [22:08] Hi folks. I'm having a wicked sound issue in ubuntustudio 13.04. i.e. no sound at all. My laptop is an alienware m14x. [22:11] /proc/asound shows me two cards: HDA Intel PCH and HDA NVidia [22:11] pavucontrol seema to be configured correctly [22:12] (sorry -> seams) [22:13] volta: you dont really configure pavucontrol [22:13] you can use it to configure pulse [22:13] !audio [22:13] If you're having problems with sound, click the Volume applet, then Sound Preferences, and check your Volume, Hardware, Input, and Output settings. If that fails, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting - http://alsa.opensrc.org/DmixPlugin - For playing audio files, see !players and !mp3. [22:13] volta: if you refer to that ^^ you'll see that if you open a terminal, and run "aplay -l" you should see what alsa is capable of using [22:14] if it were me, i would just load up a few live CD's til something works.. or just check the usual places.. alsamixer and/or pavucontrol.. and dont trust any labels for volume controls [22:15] Did all the volume applet stuff. There is apparently a signal. But nothing to hear from the speakers [22:15] volta: look for, and apply all upgrades [22:15] volta: try other live CD's [22:16] volta: confirm that the hardware is functioning [22:16] the issue exists only in ubuntustudio. My dualboot debian 7 works flawlessly. [22:17] volta: then, check alsa versions and kernel versions [22:17] did all system update, upgrade and system-upgrade today [22:17] volta: there is nothing about ubuntustudio that is different, and going to cause you an issue like that [22:17] its config related [22:17] volta: what is the output of "aplay -l" ? [22:17] volta: have you read that linke? [22:18] link* [22:18] have you tried another ubuntu live CD? [22:18] do you need ubuntustudio? [22:18] suppose so too, but the **** thing is not speaking to me - must be my (configuration) fault [22:19] I like ubuntu studio. It's fast (xfce), slim and nice to handle [22:19] volta: im not suggestions its your fault [22:19] volta: what is the output of aplay -l ? [22:19] may i post it here? [22:19] volta: you can install slim and xfce in debian 7 [22:19] !paste [22:19] For posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://imagebin.org/?page=add | !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic. [22:20] aplay -l [22:20] **** Liste der Hardware-Geräte (PLAYBACK) **** [22:20] Karte 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], Gerät 0: CA0132 Analog [CA0132 Analog] [22:20] Sub-Geräte: 1/1 [22:20] Sub-Gerät #0: subdevice #0 [22:20] Karte 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], Gerät 1: CA0132 Digital [CA0132 Digital] [22:20] Sub-Geräte: 1/1 [22:20] Sub-Gerät #0: subdevice #0 [22:20] Karte 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], Gerät 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0] [22:20] Sub-Geräte: 1/1 [22:20] Sub-Gerät #0: subdevice #0 [22:20] Karte 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], Gerät 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0] [22:20] Sub-Geräte: 1/1 [22:20] Sub-Gerät #0: subdevice #0 [22:20] thank you ubottu [22:20] the intel should be working finr [22:20] fine* [22:20] !bot [22:20] Hi! I'm #ubuntustudio's favorite infobot, you can search my brain yourself at http://ubottu.com/factoids.cgi | Usage info: http://ubottu.com/devel/wiki/Plugins | Bot channels and general info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Bots [22:21] anyways, i would try the same installer disc you used live [22:21] lol [22:21] its likely just something tricky [22:21] volta: one interesting thing that happens via xfce.. if you mute with the keyboard, you cant unmute [22:21] volta: so, if you have tried unmuting.. try doing it again, and differently [22:22] volta: try from the live CD, so you can bypass what you have done so far [22:22] FN seems to work fine (mute unmute) [22:22] volta: FN is what im talking about [22:22] volta: and it will *seem* like it is fine [22:22] volta: but, as i said, and in actualility, its not [22:23] volta: its a bug in xfce/alsa where that will *not* unmute [22:23] volta: so, if you have, as i said, used the keyboard to mute and unmute, use the GUI instead [22:23] volta: understand? [22:23] I installed from a usb stick and already deleted the image, so i woud have to do the download again and prepare the stick.... [22:23] volta: are you following? [22:24] volta: OK [22:24] volta: then, try the mute suggestion please [22:25] got that. going to mute/umute from the mixer (right klick on sound symbol) [22:27] right klick on sound symbol offers mute option. I tried it with no result [22:28] I had to manually add the sound symbol to the bar because it disappeared before [22:29] volta: try as a different user [22:29] volta: try in #xubuntu or #ubuntu since this is really not ubuntustudio related [22:29] volta: try with different kernels, if you have an older one [22:29] Funny thing is that I can see a peak signal in pavucontrol [22:29] volta: that is from something playing audio [22:29] tried already an older kernel [22:29] volta: you can "see" that if you have no audio device [22:30] volta: forget that [22:30] volta: its something you have muted [22:30] yes, I#m running vlc for testing purposes [22:30] ok [22:31] volta: run many things for testing purposes [22:32] same with totem and kaffeine, no sound [22:33] volta: i understand that [22:33] volta: im just saying, try other things, as you test [22:33] volta: you have something muted, friend [22:33] volta: i would try a live CD, and you should have sound out of the box [22:33] volta: it is a debian base, so all the same "tricks" apply [22:34] volta: you are using different UI's here, and are likely just not accustomed to them, and have done something accidentally [22:34] volta: you may also, as i said, insatll xfce in debian 7 and enjoy [22:34] probably right. As I wrote I have sound from this same machine, just with another linux. [22:35] volta: then, as i said, you can refer to that kernel version, and alsa version [22:35] volta: the same software is the same [22:36] Would be nicer to find just the right "unmute-button" . [22:37] volta: install whatever DE you are used to using [22:37] Thanks a lot for your help so far. [22:37] volta: how about the other user? [22:37] good idea [22:38] I'm going to log out, log into the other user and then come back [23:00] hi. Had to add a new user, so it took longer. But no sound symbol and also no sound with the new user. [23:00] volta: try a live CD, friend [23:00] and copy some configuration from the cd?! [23:00] or, just add the 2 packages you are interested in running into your debian which is working [23:01] just want something more bleeding edge than debian, something to toy arround [23:01] tried a lot of distros ;-) [23:02] I'm happy I have these two quite well configured. Dispite this little catastrophe ;-) [23:02] volta: i would see that *everything* works from the live CD [23:03] I'm quite shure it does. But I will try on occasin. [23:03] *occasion [23:04] I'll go through the links you sent me earlier in detail. See what happens. [23:05] ...not that I did't already google some of them ;-) [23:05] +n [23:05] volta: you can also try #xubuntu or #ubuntu [23:06] volta: i know this is challenging to understand, but this is not ubuntustduio specific [23:07] I still think it's meplayingtoomucharroundspecific. But that's ok ;-) [23:07] Could jack just be in the way? [23:07] volta: are you using jack? [23:07] if not, it wont be [23:08] yes [23:08] volta: if you are never going to use jack, then dont use it [23:08] ardour asked for it [23:08] volta: jack will break the config that i have been talking you through [23:08] and some other tools [23:08] volta: you should restart the machine [23:08] launch *nothing* but vlc [23:08] troubleshoot what you know [23:09] get pulse working [23:09] !proaudio [23:09] For information on professional audio tools in Ubuntu, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/ProAudioIntro [23:10] Just to mention it: soud did work before, on this same installation. [23:10] volta: then, you broke it [23:10] volta: that clears that up [23:10] jippeeee [23:11] volta: i was troubleshooting as though it *never* worked [23:11] new stuff to learn [23:11] /join #opensourcemusicians and read the links [23:11] sorry [23:11] i suggest testing with a live CD.. still.. again [23:11] ok [23:12] you wont break anything permanently by messing around
