williamtdrHello. I am trying to install Ubuntu on my computer without any external media from my existing Linux installation. I downloaded lubuntu 13.04 and fed the ISO to unetbootin, and then booted into grub. Howeve, when I try to install or boot from the live CD, it gives the error behind the dots (if I press ESC): /dev/sdb: No medium found. and 'stdin: n03:42
williamtdrot a typewriter'. After several minutes it gives up and exists to busybox. What should I do?03:42
williamtdr*lubuntu03:42
williamtdrAdditional clarification: using unetbootin to install off hard disk without external media.03:43
Unit193You have a Ubuntu install already?  You have grml-rescueboot in the repos?03:44
williamtdrUnit193: what's that?03:45
williamtdrI see.03:46
williamtdrfound the page.03:46
Unit193Adds the iso into the grub menu.  Anywho, I'm sorry I can't help, not used that feature of unetbootin, all I can say is if you have the right drive marked.03:46
williamtdrHow do I check that?03:46
Unit193williamtdr: Check your /boot/grub/grub.cfg file.04:18
williamtdrUnit193: checking.04:38
williamtdrUnit193: what should I be checking for?04:38
williamtdrHere's the relevant line:04:40
Unit193/dev/sdb seems to either be the disk (lsblk) or what's in grub config.04:40
williamtdrmenuentry "Install Lubuntu" {04:40
williamtdr        set root=(hd0,5)04:40
williamtdr        linux /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/lubuntu.seed boot=casper only-ubiquity  quiet splash --04:40
williamtdr        initrd /casper/initrd.lz04:40
williamtdr}04:40
williamtdrmenuentry "Install Lubuntu" {04:40
williamtdr        set root=(hd0,5)04:40
williamtdr        linux /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/lubuntu.seed boot=casper only-ubiquity  quiet splash --04:40
williamtdr        initrd /casper/initrd.lz04:40
williamtdr}04:40
williamtdrdouble paste.04:40
williamtdrsorry.04:40
williamtdrThat seems right.04:40
williamtdrUnit193: any problems there?04:44
Unit193Can you check what partition it's on just to make sure?  And it seems from what you've said, my proposed tool should work out for you, do you concure?04:45
Unit193concur*04:45
Unit193holstein: Howdy, you've used unetbootin more than I have I think, got a second?04:47
holsteinUnit193: sure04:48
williamtdrUnit193: it isn't on a physical partition.04:48
williamtdrSorry, trying to help and be helped at the same time.04:54
williamtdrholstein: ever worked with unetbootin's USB-less installation?04:54
holsteinwilliamtdr: nope04:56
williamtdrDrat/04:57
williamtdr*.04:57
holsteinwilliamtdr: what are you trying to do?04:58
holsteinwilliamtdr: do you not have a USB stick?04:58
Unit193!info grml-rescueboot05:00
ubot93grml-rescueboot (source: grml-rescueboot): Integrates Grml ISO booting into GRUB. In component universe, is extra. Version 0.4.2 (raring), package size 6 kB, installed size 61 kB05:00
williamtdrholstein: No, I don't.05:01
holsteinwilliamtdr: what are you trying to do?05:01
holsteinwilliamtdr: install to the same hard drive you are using?05:01
williamtdrholstein: yes.05:02
holsteinwilliamtdr: i would rather take 8 bucks and get a USB stick, and sell it for 10 when im done05:02
holsteinwilliamtdr: can you not aquire a USB stick?05:02
williamtdrNo, I can't.05:02
holsteinwilliamtdr: do you have *any* other hard drive?05:02
williamtdrThis is a computer that isn't easily accessible.05:02
holsteinwilliamtdr: this will be quite challenging, and i have never cared to do it05:03
holsteinwilliamtdr: i would literally prefer mailing you a USB stick than talking bot you about it05:03
holsteinwilliamtdr: can you boot CD?05:03
williamtdrholstein: it's a netbook.05:03
holsteinwilliamtdr: i am on a netbook.. i boot external USB cd drives.. USB sticks. SD cards.. myu android phone with drive droid05:05
holsteinwilliamtdr: i would *never* try installing from the same hard drive that im installing to.. i havent needed to05:05
holsteinwilliamtdr: have you tried unetbootin support? or just hardware? or main linux?05:08
holsteini would take a step back, and just ask a general linux community how to install from the same hard drive you are booting installation media on05:08
holsteini would rather take the hard drive out and install on another machine than deal with what you are dealing with, which i have also done05:09
Unit193The problem is the re-partition, you can install using debootstrap. :P05:09
holsteinit could be done on another box though, and end up with a nice normal partition/install05:10
holsteini would do debootstrap knowing that unless i wanted to boot a live gparted disk, i would lose some space05:10
Unit193(That's one reason slitaz is in netboot, has gparted pre-installed)05:11
williamtdrNight.05:24
Unit193Hrm, well good night.05:24
williamtdr12:23 AM.05:25
williamtdrGotta wake up @ 7  tommorow.05:25
williamtdrI'll dig about for a flash drive.05:25
Unit193Yeah, 01:25 here.  Have a good rest, and work.05:25
williamtdr:)05:25
williamtdrThanks, you too.05:25
joshugood morning or night to some of you ;)07:14

t-ubuntuI found a driver in the file I downloaded22:46

t-ubuntuI typed cd Downloads and a new line came up waiting for another command22:58
