[03:42] Hello. I am trying to install Ubuntu on my computer without any external media from my existing Linux installation. I downloaded lubuntu 13.04 and fed the ISO to unetbootin, and then booted into grub. Howeve, when I try to install or boot from the live CD, it gives the error behind the dots (if I press ESC): /dev/sdb: No medium found. and 'stdin: n [03:42] ot a typewriter'. After several minutes it gives up and exists to busybox. What should I do? [03:42] *lubuntu [03:43] Additional clarification: using unetbootin to install off hard disk without external media. [03:44] You have a Ubuntu install already? You have grml-rescueboot in the repos? [03:45] Unit193: what's that? [03:46] I see. [03:46] found the page. [03:46] Adds the iso into the grub menu. Anywho, I'm sorry I can't help, not used that feature of unetbootin, all I can say is if you have the right drive marked. [03:46] How do I check that? [04:18] williamtdr: Check your /boot/grub/grub.cfg file. [04:38] Unit193: checking. [04:38] Unit193: what should I be checking for? [04:40] Here's the relevant line: [04:40] /dev/sdb seems to either be the disk (lsblk) or what's in grub config. [04:40] menuentry "Install Lubuntu" { [04:40] set root=(hd0,5) [04:40] linux /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/lubuntu.seed boot=casper only-ubiquity quiet splash -- [04:40] initrd /casper/initrd.lz [04:40] } [04:40] menuentry "Install Lubuntu" { [04:40] set root=(hd0,5) [04:40] linux /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/lubuntu.seed boot=casper only-ubiquity quiet splash -- [04:40] initrd /casper/initrd.lz [04:40] } [04:40] double paste. [04:40] sorry. [04:40] That seems right. [04:44] Unit193: any problems there? [04:45] Can you check what partition it's on just to make sure? And it seems from what you've said, my proposed tool should work out for you, do you concure? [04:45] concur* [04:47] holstein: Howdy, you've used unetbootin more than I have I think, got a second? [04:48] Unit193: sure [04:48] Unit193: it isn't on a physical partition. [04:54] Sorry, trying to help and be helped at the same time. [04:54] holstein: ever worked with unetbootin's USB-less installation? [04:56] williamtdr: nope [04:57] Drat/ [04:57] *. [04:58] williamtdr: what are you trying to do? [04:58] williamtdr: do you not have a USB stick? [05:00] !info grml-rescueboot [05:00] grml-rescueboot (source: grml-rescueboot): Integrates Grml ISO booting into GRUB. In component universe, is extra. Version 0.4.2 (raring), package size 6 kB, installed size 61 kB [05:01] holstein: No, I don't. [05:01] williamtdr: what are you trying to do? [05:01] williamtdr: install to the same hard drive you are using? [05:02] holstein: yes. [05:02] williamtdr: i would rather take 8 bucks and get a USB stick, and sell it for 10 when im done [05:02] williamtdr: can you not aquire a USB stick? [05:02] No, I can't. [05:02] williamtdr: do you have *any* other hard drive? [05:02] This is a computer that isn't easily accessible. [05:03] williamtdr: this will be quite challenging, and i have never cared to do it [05:03] williamtdr: i would literally prefer mailing you a USB stick than talking bot you about it [05:03] williamtdr: can you boot CD? [05:03] holstein: it's a netbook. [05:05] williamtdr: i am on a netbook.. i boot external USB cd drives.. USB sticks. SD cards.. myu android phone with drive droid [05:05] williamtdr: i would *never* try installing from the same hard drive that im installing to.. i havent needed to [05:08] williamtdr: have you tried unetbootin support? or just hardware? or main linux? [05:08] i would take a step back, and just ask a general linux community how to install from the same hard drive you are booting installation media on [05:09] i would rather take the hard drive out and install on another machine than deal with what you are dealing with, which i have also done [05:09] The problem is the re-partition, you can install using debootstrap. :P [05:10] it could be done on another box though, and end up with a nice normal partition/install [05:10] i would do debootstrap knowing that unless i wanted to boot a live gparted disk, i would lose some space [05:11] (That's one reason slitaz is in netboot, has gparted pre-installed) [05:24] Night. [05:24] Hrm, well good night. [05:25] 12:23 AM. [05:25] Gotta wake up @ 7 tommorow. [05:25] I'll dig about for a flash drive. [05:25] Yeah, 01:25 here. Have a good rest, and work. [05:25] :) [05:25] Thanks, you too. [07:14] good morning or night to some of you ;) === moondoggie is now known as moondog === daker_ is now known as daker [14:03] hi === Techman_ is now known as Techman [17:30] Hello [17:31] hi Adrien_D [17:31] I search the official Twitter account of lubuntu, can you help me ? [17:32] Adrien_D: https://twitter.com/LubuntuOfficial [17:34] okay, thanks, because I see LubuntuOfficial, LubuntuDesktop and LubuntuLinux [22:29] hi all [22:29] Could anyone help me with wifi syupport? [22:35] t-ubuntu: fire away [22:39] could you take a look at this link http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PFid=48&Level=5&Conn=4&ProdID=229&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true | and download the linux kernel and look at the documentation [22:39] why don't you start by telling me what your problem is [22:40] I cant seem to configure my network adapter to connect to my network [22:40] and what adapter do you have? [22:40] Realtek RTU8191SU Airlink AWLL6075 [22:41] what does lspci tell you? [22:41] It is a usb adpter [22:42] w hat about lsusb then? [22:42] it recognizes 3 ports being used [22:42] 1 is a mouse, 1 is a keyboard, and the realtek adapter [22:42] and what information specifically does it give you about the adapter [22:42] like don't paraphrase [22:42] copy/paste [22:42] just the relevant line [22:43] sorry it is on a desktop, and I am on the laptop, I will try my best [22:44] Bus 001 Device 010: ID 0bda:8172 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8191SU 802.11n WLAN Adapter [22:44] okies [22:44] so any help? [22:44] omg this link is hilarious [22:44] it just sends me in a loop [22:45] what? [22:45] http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=21&PFid=48&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true%20&Downloads=true&Downloads=true [22:45] damn it [22:45] so from what i can ghather you need to compile it [22:45] is that's where you are stuck? [22:46] I don't even know, im a newbie to linux [22:46] well apparently you picked the worst adapter known to man :) [22:46] I found a driver in the file I downloaded [22:46] I guess just the one to linux [22:46] cuz it looks like to me you need to download from the mfgr, compile the driver (not for noobs usually), and then install it [22:47] I am looking at the documentation [22:47] and it is saying how to compile and install the driver [22:47] yep [22:47] I just can't seem to understand how to do it [22:47] why don't you do this: put the documentation text up on pastebin.com [22:47] okay [22:50] http://pastebin.com/0htMDG92 [22:50] please tell me if I need to post more [22:50] ok [22:50] so if you're in the terminal in the folder where all the files are, run ls [22:51] actually run ls -al [22:51] give me the line that's got install.sh on it [22:52] could you elaborate? What line? [22:52] did you do ls -al [22:53] yeah then what [22:54] is there a line that has install.sh on it? [22:54] i found the install.sh file [22:54] in the documentation [22:54] but is it in the files that came in the download? [22:55] yeah [22:55] and so when you do ls -al, you see it? [22:56] I see a downloads line, but I do not see install.ls [22:57] try cd Downloads [22:57] what's in there? [22:58] I typed cd Downloads and a new line came up waiting for another command [22:58] now do ls -al [22:58] do you see install.sh yet? if not what? [22:59] it is showing the folder containing the install.sh script [22:59] http://www.realtek.com.tw/products/productsView.aspx?Langid=1&PFid=48&Level=5&Conn=4&ProdID=229 [22:59] here try clicking on the link all the way at the bottom called "software" [22:59] so cd into that folder and then do ls -al and give me the line from that output that includes install.sh [23:01] -rw-rw-r-- 1 s*****-pc s*****-pc 3106 Apr 3 2012 install.sh [23:02] do chmod +x install.sh [23:02] now> [23:02] now what? [23:02] ./install.sh [23:03] its asking for a password, and when I input mine it is not working [23:04] how do I install synaptic on a computer that does not have internet [23:06] try sudo ./install.sh [23:07] ok [23:08] offline installation of packages: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingSoftware#Installing_packages_without_an_Internet_connection [23:09] I dont have synaptic [23:09] how do i install it [23:10] ??? [23:10] what version do you have? [23:10] 12.04 LTS [23:10] of lubuntu? [23:10] Ubuntu [23:10] then why are you on the lubuntu channel? [23:11] and for that matter, how the heck could you not have synaptic? [23:11] how am I supposed to know? lol when I look for synaptic it does not exist on my computer [23:11] sorry [23:12] about the ubuntu thing, u are just the only person willing to help [23:12] so is there any way to install synaptic [23:13] well i'm puzzled as to why you don't have synaptic [23:13] hwo did you install ubuntu? [23:14] via USb [23:14] Its the LTS version [23:14] but you installed the normal desktop iso? [23:14] Guess so yes [23:14] then there is no reason you should not have synaptic [23:14] hm odd [23:15] Im this guys freind wxl [23:15] so you might go join #ubuntu (not #lubuntu) and see if they can help you [23:15] hmm [23:15] they tried :p [23:15] Your the best help we have [23:15] 1 second [23:15] k [23:17] so do this: apt-cache policy synaptic | grep -i installed [23:18] wait [23:18] t-ubuntu, isnt back [23:18] np i'm working anyways [23:18] hah see t-ubuntu and I live across the street [23:18] so yep helping him with this wifi issue [23:19] used alot of linux before [23:19] like ArchBang etc [23:19] yep [23:19] whats the comamnd to run again wxl ? [23:19] I accidentally cleared the chat [23:19] so do this: apt-cache policy synaptic | grep -i installed [23:19] ok [23:20] I'm sure he'll bbe back [23:20] its friday and yeah [23:25] now what wxl ? [23:25] what was the result? [23:25] I am still in the fglder of the linux kernel driver [23:25] erm [23:25] hold on [23:25] doesn't matter where you are [23:26] whats the line after synaptic mean? [23:26] how do i type that? [23:26] shift \ [23:27] it says none [23:27] that's insane [23:27] ikr [23:27] i would defer to you to #ubuntu because i'm clueless [23:27] i don't use synaptic anyways
