pleia2welcome christopherhigue03:24
christopherhigueThanks pleia2 for the right direction- I am here, and to anyone willing to answer something for me I do have a small, but hopefully managable problem...03:25
christopherhigueThanks again- It is time consuming to be "Solo" studying and not at least ask some of the brilliance that is Ubuntu Community..03:27
pleia2christopherhigue: feel free to go ahead and ask, folks kind of lurk and go in and out of here :)03:30
christopherhigueSo, I need to first ask simply- Is it "okay that I have several flavours of 12.04LTS - as I have installed currently, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS untiy 2d as well as Kde plasma(through an Ubuntu Studio for music development desire :)  and now I also have Gnome with classic, and classic(no effects) All this from right after boot ;runs about 900mb of my 2.9gb RAM available- To narrow all this down I had a quick nerve racking  messag03:35
pleia2your line chopped off at: "I had a quick nerve racking  messag"03:35
pleia2didnt get the rest :)03:36
christopherhigueokay-- the rest is -  It had i think my kernel Uvs and what not like [389484]  -Something like that and it said Zero ram loaded? then it went away Very very quickly and I seem to be running 190 process' and 867mb of ram, I have 2.9GB installed on my 64-bit full install of Ubuntu -by the way...:)03:38
pleia2so having multiple desktop environments installed isn't really a problem, only one runs at at time03:39
christopherhigue-Thats what I thought as well :)  I do second guess myself, and me being only a couple weeks into Linux being my savior I am still not just so sure about everything03:40
pleia2welcome to the world of linux!03:40
akkThat's okay, some of us have been using it for decades and we're still not sure about everything. :)03:40
pleia2not sure what the kernel message meant, where did you see it?03:41
akkBTW, if you run something to show you how much memory is free, it will look like most of it is used up03:42
akkbut that's not really true -- Linux uses any spare memory for disk cache (to make disk accesses faster)03:42
christopherhiguehaha awesome to hear!, to pleia2- Right after it started booting the Kubuntu 12.04 bootloader page I think...03:42
akkbut it can free up that memory any time if you need it.03:42
akkWith 3Gb RAM you should have plenty of memory for most things you'll want to do.03:43
christopherhigueyeah I just looked at system monitor and took notice without running something else like an app to test or command..03:43
pleia2well, if there are any specific apps/processes in the list you have questions about, feel free to ask03:47
christopherhigueYeah I always was able to run this system pretty hard with Multiple things going on i.e:; Mozilla, Wine to play around with FL studio , and also with the software ctre or updates installing... I have a pretty well built hp - m8330f. it seemed like a Cro-magnum when ehhehhm - Windows 7 was on it, but I wiped  that **** like  my last laboratory visit.. I cant fight to run my system all the time theres no fun in that exper03:50
pleia2hehe03:56
pleia2ah, my dinner has arrived! be back in a bit03:56
christopherhigueThanks again pleia2 your awesome... I am going to go back into the books of learning everything I can so I only come here for not so obvious questions - ttyl03:58

agliodbshow do I modify the icons in Unity dash so that I change the command line of the programs they're launching?17:47
raevolagliodbs: can you explain a little  more what you mean by "icons in the unity dash"?17:54
agliodbsraevol: you know what Unity Dash is?17:54
raevolagliodbs: there's several things in ubuntu called the dash17:55
raevolagliodbs: are you referring to the menu that pops up when you press the super key?17:55
agliodbsraevol: the think in the upper left corner, and the thing you get if you hit the "windows" key17:55
raevolagliodbs: ok, and then which icons do you want to modify? the application shortcuts? can you give me an example?17:56
agliodbsraevol: yeah, I want to modify "Kate" to pass the -n switch17:56
raevolagliodbs: so those icons are the .desktop entries for the application, the same as the ones that are used in menus in other deskop environments17:57
raevolagliodbs: they generally live in /usr/share/applications/ but not always17:58
raevolopen the file for Kate in a text editor and it should make sense17:58
agliodbsraevol: yeah, I haven't been able to find them17:58
raevolagliodbs: you might want to look up some documentation for .desktop files to see their format17:58
agliodbsraevol: I've looked in the various locations recommended on the web, and the definition files aren't in any of those17:58
raevolagliodbs: you looked in /usr/share/applications/ ?17:58
raevolagliodbs: you're running ubuntu? how did you install kate? from the standard repository, or manually?17:59
agliodbsstandard ...17:59
agliodbsoh.  it's in "kde4"17:59
raevolagliodbs: what do you mean "it's in 'kde4'"?18:00
raevolagliodbs: http://packages.ubuntu.com/raring/amd64/kate/filelist18:01
darthrobotTitle: [Ubuntu – File list of package kate/raring/amd64]18:01
raevolagliodbs: it's in /usr/share/applications/kde4 ok i see what you are saying now18:01
agliodbsyeah18:01
agliodbsraevol: only noticed it when I opened the dir in a gui18:01
agliodbswas searching for "kate"18:01
agliodbsmost of the online guides misdirect me to ~home/.gnome/desktop18:02
raevolyea i don't know anything about that :(18:02
raevolagliodbs: back to work for me, good luck18:03
agliodbsraevol: thanks for the pointer!18:03
