[00:00] http://www.sdzsafaripark.org/video/elephant_cam.html elephants playing in the water! (it's topical because they are in san diego, you see) [00:00] Title: [San Diego Zoo Safari Park: Elephant Cam] === josh_805 is now known as agliodbs [03:24] welcome christopherhigue [03:25] Thanks pleia2 for the right direction- I am here, and to anyone willing to answer something for me I do have a small, but hopefully managable problem... [03:27] Thanks again- It is time consuming to be "Solo" studying and not at least ask some of the brilliance that is Ubuntu Community.. [03:30] christopherhigue: feel free to go ahead and ask, folks kind of lurk and go in and out of here :) [03:35] So, I need to first ask simply- Is it "okay that I have several flavours of 12.04LTS - as I have installed currently, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS untiy 2d as well as Kde plasma(through an Ubuntu Studio for music development desire :) and now I also have Gnome with classic, and classic(no effects) All this from right after boot ;runs about 900mb of my 2.9gb RAM available- To narrow all this down I had a quick nerve racking messag [03:35] your line chopped off at: "I had a quick nerve racking messag" [03:36] didnt get the rest :) [03:38] okay-- the rest is - It had i think my kernel Uvs and what not like [389484] -Something like that and it said Zero ram loaded? then it went away Very very quickly and I seem to be running 190 process' and 867mb of ram, I have 2.9GB installed on my 64-bit full install of Ubuntu -by the way...:) [03:39] so having multiple desktop environments installed isn't really a problem, only one runs at at time [03:40] -Thats what I thought as well :) I do second guess myself, and me being only a couple weeks into Linux being my savior I am still not just so sure about everything [03:40] welcome to the world of linux! [03:40] That's okay, some of us have been using it for decades and we're still not sure about everything. :) [03:41] not sure what the kernel message meant, where did you see it? [03:42] BTW, if you run something to show you how much memory is free, it will look like most of it is used up [03:42] but that's not really true -- Linux uses any spare memory for disk cache (to make disk accesses faster) [03:42] haha awesome to hear!, to pleia2- Right after it started booting the Kubuntu 12.04 bootloader page I think... [03:42] but it can free up that memory any time if you need it. [03:43] With 3Gb RAM you should have plenty of memory for most things you'll want to do. [03:43] yeah I just looked at system monitor and took notice without running something else like an app to test or command.. [03:47] well, if there are any specific apps/processes in the list you have questions about, feel free to ask [03:50] Yeah I always was able to run this system pretty hard with Multiple things going on i.e:; Mozilla, Wine to play around with FL studio , and also with the software ctre or updates installing... I have a pretty well built hp - m8330f. it seemed like a Cro-magnum when ehhehhm - Windows 7 was on it, but I wiped that **** like my last laboratory visit.. I cant fight to run my system all the time theres no fun in that exper [03:56] hehe [03:56] ah, my dinner has arrived! be back in a bit [03:58] Thanks again pleia2 your awesome... I am going to go back into the books of learning everything I can so I only come here for not so obvious questions - ttyl === josh_432 is now known as agliodbs === josh__ is now known as agliodbs [17:47] how do I modify the icons in Unity dash so that I change the command line of the programs they're launching? [17:54] agliodbs: can you explain a little more what you mean by "icons in the unity dash"? [17:54] raevol: you know what Unity Dash is? [17:55] agliodbs: there's several things in ubuntu called the dash [17:55] agliodbs: are you referring to the menu that pops up when you press the super key? [17:55] raevol: the think in the upper left corner, and the thing you get if you hit the "windows" key [17:56] agliodbs: ok, and then which icons do you want to modify? the application shortcuts? can you give me an example? [17:56] raevol: yeah, I want to modify "Kate" to pass the -n switch [17:57] agliodbs: so those icons are the .desktop entries for the application, the same as the ones that are used in menus in other deskop environments [17:58] agliodbs: they generally live in /usr/share/applications/ but not always [17:58] open the file for Kate in a text editor and it should make sense [17:58] raevol: yeah, I haven't been able to find them [17:58] agliodbs: you might want to look up some documentation for .desktop files to see their format [17:58] raevol: I've looked in the various locations recommended on the web, and the definition files aren't in any of those [17:58] agliodbs: you looked in /usr/share/applications/ ? [17:59] agliodbs: you're running ubuntu? how did you install kate? from the standard repository, or manually? [17:59] standard ... [17:59] oh. it's in "kde4" [18:00] agliodbs: what do you mean "it's in 'kde4'"? [18:01] agliodbs: http://packages.ubuntu.com/raring/amd64/kate/filelist [18:01] Title: [Ubuntu – File list of package kate/raring/amd64] [18:01] agliodbs: it's in /usr/share/applications/kde4 ok i see what you are saying now [18:01] yeah [18:01] raevol: only noticed it when I opened the dir in a gui [18:01] was searching for "kate" [18:02] most of the online guides misdirect me to ~home/.gnome/desktop [18:02] yea i don't know anything about that :( [18:03] agliodbs: back to work for me, good luck [18:03] raevol: thanks for the pointer! [23:09] got XMir running on my Xubuntu laptop, I shall bring to Ubuntu Hour tomorrow to show people [23:09] can see if we can break it ;) === josh_424 is now known as agliodbs
