cinvokexubuntu 13.04 halts on checking battery state. i read that my Xauthority file may be corrupted, so i moved that and rebooted.  however, this didnt fix the problem.  Does anyone have any ideas?00:24
damianosAny gtkrc ninjas in here?00:24
damianosCan somebody enlighten me about how to target a specific widget in a gtkrc file?  The documentation I've found online is scattered and the info doesn't seem to be effective half the time. I'm running 13.04. I do have xfce4 installed but I'm using compiz standalone with xfce4-panel. I am trying to manipulate the hover effect over the panel buttons00:33
wdkevinoneHello. I just setup a new install of Xubuntu on a VM. I installed VMWare tools then changed my resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768 and now when I type my password to login, it just brings me back to the login screen again.00:40
w30wdkevinone, check the configuration in /etc/X11/xorg,conf and see if you can edit a 1024x768 entry  back to 880x600. Then maybe you can get your resolution fixed with a working GUI01:19
Gooman24Anyone around to help with and install question?06:40
well_laid_lawndepends on the question...06:45
Gooman24hopefully an easy one lol06:45
Gooman24I an trying to install 13.04 on a slightly older laptop06:46
Gooman24it has a bcm4318 based wifi card06:46
Gooman24eveytime I started the install it would crash to a black screen and scroll to fast for me to read06:47
Gooman24I did determine I think that the wifi card drivers is the problem06:47
Gooman24if I run the install plugged into an ethernet cable it does the same06:47
Gooman24if I tell it not to download updates it works... but will crash as soon as the OS loads and I try to dl any updates over ethernet06:47
Gooman24if I remove the wifi card(off the MB) it will install fine06:48
Gooman24now in the live enviroment I unloaded the modules for the wifi and installed the proper bcm4318 drivers and loaded the modules06:48
Gooman24then I was able to connect to wifi and everything seemed stable and working06:48
Gooman24I clicked the install button and it crashed again06:49
Gooman24so my question is would the install routine have tried to reload the bad drivers when it initialised the network?06:49
Gooman24should I have blacklisted them in the live enviroment... would that even help?06:49
Gooman24and the second question being I am running the install now with the wifi card removed... after it is done can I install the drivers... black list the old ones and the put that card in and reboot?  does that sound like the right approach?06:50
bullgard4Gooman24: Regarding your 2nd question: Yes you can try installing the driver. If it fails please analyze the error logs and continue installing accordingly.07:06
Gooman24any thoughts on the first part?07:07
bullgard4Gooman24: Your first question is: "would the install routine have tried to reload the bad drivers when it initialised the network?" You are using conjunctive voice. I do not understand your if clause. Can you re-word your if-clause, please?07:11

pmjdebruijndid it work before?08:33
raven_yes, i see that my battery has just about half the time since installing 13.04 and for example wifi cannot be disabled by fn+f208:34
MrHotsauceraven_: have you tried suspending and un-suspending your computer? i know it sounds stupid but thats what i have to do every boot to get my function keys working08:35
raven_MrHotsauce, suspending does not change that08:36
raven_there were special eee packages on previous versions but not any more08:36
raven_any ideas?08:56

knomeoh, right.10:05
TheSheepas xfce has in debian10:05

TheSheepjust choose the 'xfce session' instead of 'xubuntu session' on the first login10:05
knomebut still, the answer is yes10:05
dasI use xfce4 in debian10:06
dasbut I'm wondering if I can get a sleek panel like Xubuntu has10:06
knomedas, it's just a panel with transparency10:06
dasbecause what I have right now is kinda ugly10:06
TheSheepit's just a question of the theme and settings10:07

zodiakstrange question.. anyone got any good pointers/docs/guides on the touchscreens that are now appearing en masse in laptops with xubuntu ?17:23
zodiakdo they work ? is it jst another pointer device to Xorg ?17:23
TheSheepzodiak: touchscreens are usually treated as 'absolute' pointer devices, just like graphic tablets17:35
zodiakoh! spiffy :)17:35
TheSheepwhether they work depends on the exact model, of course17:36
zodiakcause.. yeah, I can't deal with being stuck with windows 8 ;)17:36
zodiakaaahh.. well. guess it's time to try it and see. Danke :)17:36
xubuntu886I've got a quick question17:41

ubottucinvoke: Please don't ask the same question in multiple Ubuntu channels at the same time. Many helpers are in more than one channel and it's not fair to them or the other people seeking support.18:02
cinvokebazhang: nice someone is alive!  didnt realize anyone saw my older one.18:04
cinvokebazhang: am i asking the right question?  is there perhap another way to put it?  i know some helpers have their "standards18:08

BlueSharkHey!20:06
BlueSharkI'm currently using Xubuntu 12.04 and I was trying to upgrade to the latest stable release with `sudo apt-get upgrade` — it finished the process but `lsb_release -a` still shows 'Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS' even after a reboot. Any idea what's wrong?20:08
pleia2you want `do-release-upgrade`20:08
pleia2plain old upgrade just does upgrades on your current version20:08
pleia2and from 12.04 do-release-upgrade will get you to 12.10, you run it again to get to 13.0420:09
elfywill 12.04 upgrade to anything but the next lts? ie 14.0420:09
pleia2elfy: only 12.1020:09
pleia2and when 14.04 comes out, it can upgrade to that20:09
* elfy thought you had to change things to get lts to see anything but lts 20:10
elfyperhaps I should use a release for longer than a week20:10
pleia2I think that's just for auto-prompting20:10
Unit193elfy: grep Prompt /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades  yeah.20:10
pleia2you can still upgrade to 12.10, it just won't prompt you for it20:11
BlueSharkChecking for a new Ubuntu release20:12
BlueSharkNo new release found20:12
BlueSharkpleia2: when I did `do-release-upgrade` ^ that was the result.20:13
pleia2BlueShark: try: do-release-upgrade -d20:13
pleia2it should have been fine though, the non-support for upgrading is only pre 12.04.220:14
BlueSharkI think that worked!20:14
pleia2good :)20:14
BlueSharkprobably a stupid question, but...20:15
BlueSharkcan I schedule the second do-release-upgrade too?20:15
pleia2you'll want to wait until this one is done and make sure things work ok (do a reboot)20:15
pleia2then you can do the next one to get you to 13.0420:16
BlueSharkah, okay. cool20:16
BlueSharkwill do, thanks.20:16
pleia2my current system has been installed since 10.04, upgrades every 6 months like this20:16
BlueSharkautomatically?20:16
pleia2I run do-release-upgrade20:16
HarrihuHello22:04
knomehello22:04
HarrihuHas anyone here ever run into an installation of untrusted packages issue while updating?22:05
knomei think i've heard that before - i suppose it's because you are using a country mirror instead of the main mirror22:05
HarrihuUm not sure22:05
knomecan you check the terminal output and see if there's anything about what server the installer is using22:05
Harrihuok22:06
Harrihuhow would one go about doing that?22:06
knomeiirc, there's a small arrow and some text saying about terminal output22:06
knomewhen you click that, some black-backgrounded text should appear22:07
HarrihuRight the terminal22:07
Harrihuone moment22:07
HarrihuOK I clicked show updates22:07
HarrihuJust gave me the option to update software. I can click install now, cancel and settings. I'll click settings22:08
knomeyou can choose cancel if you're unsure - that should allow you to finish off the installation any way22:09
HarrihuNo I think I found the problem. You were right. In the settings it was set to United States. I switched it to Main.22:10
knomeok, no problem22:10
knomeenjoy :)22:10
HarrihuOK so um interesting...22:11
HarrihuI did that switch then tried to update and without doing anything it instantly generated a crash report icon and now claims it's all up to date.22:11
HarrihuLOL So wierd guess I'll keep experementing22:12
HarrihuGuess I'm up to date22:14
Harrihufffuuuuu got to go. I'll be back later22:14
Harrihucya and thanks for the help knome22:14
