[17:55] <dfarmer> Having the discrete GPU switch off when it's not being used
[17:55] <tjaalton> right, not happening
[17:55] <tjaalton> since it needs to draw the screen
[17:56] <tjaalton> several things blocking it, one obvious one is the libGL abi
[17:57] <tjaalton> you can only have one active
[17:57] <tjaalton> in this case it's the nvidia libs
[17:57] <tjaalton> but they're trying to fix that with khronos
[17:58] <dfarmer> Ah ok. I didn't realize the issue there was that fundamental. 
[17:59] <dfarmer> So pretty much what bumblebee is doing with a separate x server and compositing is really the only workable way to have switchable graphics until that gets resolved in the future.
