Viva_Neroyes00:02
Viva_NeroIs there a way to set a keyboard shortcut to remove mouse focus from whatever window has it?00:03
David-AViva_Nero: if the problem is that the game steals and held the mouse hostage, have you tried Settings>WindowManagerTweaks>Focus>FocusStealingPrevention ? (I dont know if it will help)00:06
Viva_Neroyes00:09
Viva_Neroalthough I want it to hold the mouse when playing, but get it back on menu screens00:10
Viva_Neroand that option mainly seems to apply to new windows opening00:10
David-AViva_Nero: you can define a keyboard shortcut in Settings>Keyboard that starts any program, in this case a script of your own that calls xdotool that moves focus. (doubt it is the best solution, and not sure it will work in this case)00:27
skorpiohow can i restart xfce window manager without log-out or restart?00:51
David-Askorpio: many wm's have the --replace flag. i.e. xfwm4 --replace00:57
skorpioyea tried that but it didnt solve my problem00:58
skorpioit seems as if only some themes apply to xfce compositing settings00:59
Psil0CybinHey guys quick question so when ever i randomly turn on my laptop sometimes out of the blue it will boot into console instead of the GUI i have tried to figure it out but i cant find a fix, and alot of people with an Acer Aspire one Laptop so someone suggested to look at Xorg.0.log and I have and posted the results here http://pastebin.com/13GhXjQY but i cannot figure out why it is happening01:16
Psil0Cybincan someone help me further diagnose the problem01:16
Psil0Cybinit happends randomly, and is fixed by a quick restart but it never used to happen01:16
Psil0Cybinits like something is failing randomly01:17
David-APsil0Cybin: I suspect the paste is not the complete Xorg.0.log file01:23
Psil0Cybinwell i copied the whole thing but this is a log from when i actually got back into my xfce01:24
Psil0Cybinnot from when i had the problem01:24
Psil0Cybini had to restart to fix it01:24
David-APsil0Cybin: if you boot into a gui sucessfully, the current Xorg.0.log is probably ok, then you have to post Xorg.1.log for the previous boot (assuming previous boot failed, check the time stamps on the logs to be sure)01:26
David-APsil0Cybin: or maybe it is Xorg.0.log.old01:27
Psil0CybinWell this is my Xorg.1.log file01:27
Psil0Cybinhttp://pastebin.com/vVMfemCU01:27
Psil0Cybinone sec let me find the .old01:27
Psil0CybinDavid-A: this is my Xorg.0.log.old file01:28
Psil0Cybinhttp://pastebin.com/rwP7fate01:28
Psil0Cybinlike i cant figure it out01:30
Psil0Cybineverything looks fine01:30
Psil0Cybindo yo uthink i should try to disable the driver im using now and try and use a more updated one?01:30
David-APsil0Cybin: I see no apparent problems in them, but I suspect some are incomplete. Errors should be marked "(EE)"01:31
David-APsil0Cybin: you could try. if you installed the driver via "additional hardware drivers" or whats it called, you should have up-to-date drivers automatically.01:32
SonikkuAmericaDavid-A, Psil0Cybin: What's this: >> [    30.426] (WW) Falling back to old probe method for vesa01:32
Psil0CybinI have no idea...01:34
David-ASonikkuAmerica: I dont know. Its in my log too.01:34
Psil0CybinWell for my computer01:34
Psil0Cybini have two drivers in additional hardware drivers01:34
Psil0Cybinright i have01:34
Psil0Cybindrm driver for the INTEL GMA500 enabled01:34
Psil0Cybinand i also have01:34
Psil0CybinIntel Cedarview Graphics driver01:34
Psil0Cybinthats disabled01:34
Psil0Cybinso i should try switching it?01:34
Psil0Cybinyou think01:34
Psil0Cybinbut the problem is i have no other problems other then it randomly booting into terminal im scared to cause more problems01:35
Psil0Cybinby switching drivers if it almost usually works01:35
Psil0Cybinlike its just wierd how 1/10 boots it will go into console01:35
David-APsil0Cybin: yes, and also try use neither (to use the default open source driver)01:35
Psil0Cybindo u thinkif i swtich drivers i might butcher it even mo eand not be able to get into GUi period01:38
Psil0Cybinif so what should i do?01:38
David-Awhat happend to bravery? but you'r okay. to save the world we need causion01:41
David-APsil0Cybin: if you get to a login screen you can select failsafe session. I am not sure if I remember correctlym, but think then it will use a default driver. It wont help if you dont get to a (gui) login screen.01:43
machstemhey, I was wondering if anyone is around to help me out with a weird issue installing xubuntu on a ASUS EEE PC Flare Series01:52
machstemI wanted to install xubuntu 12.10 for my daughter on this thing, and the process seems to go, but all throughout the install I see a message about "unable to enumerate usb device on port 1".  It goes on, over and over and over again, throughout the installer, and then on reboot after a successful install, it constantly floods the screen.  I never end up seeing a GUI, just a init3 login prompt.  It's so bad I can't even see myself type s01:54
machstemover and over again.01:54
machstemI installed the OS using a USB drive; having use the ubuntu usb installer method.  There are no options for me to disable USB ports in the BIOS of this thing.  I'm at a loss as I haven't been able to find anyone who can help.  I tried a command:  update-usbids and the command worked, but the messages keep appearing repeatedly.01:55
Psil0Cybinmachstem: i never heard of that problem02:01
Psil0Cybinim using an ASUS Aspire One02:02
Psil0Cybinand it was hard to get Xubuntu i had to find a SPECIFIC build02:02

ubottuLaunchpad bug 1069031 in X.Org X server "intel gma3600: X unable to start" [Undecided,New]02:05
machstemi don't know exactly how to patch this kind of stuff02:05
machstemhow do i blacklist gma500_glx ?02:06
Psil0CybinDavid-A: when i tried to remove the old driver it removed the new one02:10
Psil0Cybinso the only way to active the latest one is to active both of them :S02:10
Psil0Cybinis that normal02:10
machstemPsil0Cybin: looks like I may need to use 12.04 LTS from what I've read02:14
machstemPsil0Cybin:  do you know how to "disable gma500_glx" ? (one of the suggestions posed on a bug report)02:15
Psil0Cybinno machstem :(02:15
Psil0Cybinim kinda figuring out linux lol im still pretty new02:15
Psil0Cybin5 months02:15
Psil0Cybinsince i stepped fully into Xubuntu without windows02:15
machstemah k02:15
machstemi run a lot of linux systems, but mostly server stuff02:15
machstemrarely use a gui at work02:16
Psil0Cybinso02:19
Psil0Cybinselected the new driver guys and it enabled both of them so i guess i have to have both of them activated02:20
Psil0Cybinbecause i cannot have the newest driver activated without the older one02:20
Psil0Cybinbut now the problem is i have to keep restarting and restarting till i see if the problem occures02:20
Psil0Cybinit seems okay at the moment, i was able to boot right into Xubuntu this time02:20
no_escdo the mime types also reside in a file? which can be edited in vim for example?07:26
well_laid_lawnhave a look in ~/.local for a file07:28
no_escI checked, but as far I can determine it's not possible, because it is sort of a database which depends on a directory structure located in /usr/share/mime/ and xml-files08:03
no_escBut thanks for the time, much appreciated. (in the future I will search before asking)08:05

aicasn-Vevery so often my pc needs more ram than it has so it starts using the swap space. why is it, though, that when ram usage drops back down to almost non-existent the data isn't moved back out of the swap space?13:19
bgardneraicasn-V: Here's a lengthy overview of swap that should address your question: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq13:20
aicasn-Vthanks. will read13:23
cubaicasn-V, I think if you during the installation chose "Use the whole disc" it will give you a swap space equal to your RAM. At least mine is.13:34
bgardnercub: I believe aicasn-V's question was why swap was not being freed after it was no longer in use, rather than amount of swap created at install.13:35
cubbgardner, yeah, I just wondered myself when I read through the wiki page.14:05
bgardnercub: Yeah, and while that's a comprehensive article, I don't know that it actually answers aicasn-V's question.14:06
cubaicasn-V, "Once data is in swap, when does it come out again? Transferring data out of swap is (for traditional hard disks, at least) just as time-consuming as putting it in there. So understandably, your kernel will be just as reluctant to remove data from swap, especially if it's not actually being used (ie read from or written to). If you have data in swap and it's not being used, then it's actually a good thing that it remains in swap, since it leaves more14:17
cub memory for other things that are being used, potentially speeding up your system."14:17
cubfrom: http://askubuntu.com/questions/157793/why-is-swap-being-used-even-though-i-have-plenty-of-free-ram14:18
aicasn-Vbgardner: the link you provided has a script for forcing the data back into memory (a simple disable then reenable swap partitions) but it doesn't say why the kernel chose to leave the data swapped in the first place14:21
bgardneraicasn-V: Correct, see cub's answer - the kernel is understandably reluctant to touch data for swap, either in or out.14:22
aicasn-Vcub: makes sense. thanks for posting that :)14:24
cubnp, I got curious myself running a small eee pc14:24
