lokote_jonesIs there a way to know which cable for my SSD would make sure it is number one in the list? Does it even matter what cable my SSD is connected to inside my computer?01:28
holsteinlokote_jones: i would ask in a hardware irc channel.. you can always just try isolating them out, and plugging just a few or one in. fstab is good for nailing down where things are03:18
holstein!fstab03:18
ubottuThe /etc/fstab file indicates how drive partitions are to be used or otherwise integrated into the file system. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Fstab and http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/fstab.html and !Partitions03:18

darshanhi guys! small question regarding shortcut keys: i added a new shortcut for opening the applications menu with Super_L. But when I use combinations with Super_L e.g. Super_L-F for the file browser, the application menu triggers as well. Any way around this?07:54
well_laid_lawntry alt+super_l for the menu07:56
darshanthanks. yes that will do it. But I like to have just Super_L for the menu. And Super_L combinations for others. Is this not possible?07:57
well_laid_lawnyou press super+L and the menu is gonna pop up - doesn't matter what othe keybindings you have set up08:00
well_laid_lawnoops I meant super_L08:01
well_laid_lawnbut you knew that ;)08:01
darshanthat's right. but if i bind Super_L+F for the file browser, both the file browser & menu opens!08:04
well_laid_lawnyes 'cause you pressed super_L08:05
well_laid_lawnit's pretty straight forward08:05
well_laid_lawnadd a modifier for the menu08:05

darshanok thanks08:06

xubuntu881Hi there! In Xubuntu 12.04 LTS de-DE there is an pronounciation error: Dateiystem instead of Dateisystem. Please correct!17:05
xubuntu218I have downloaded the iso, twice, the resultant dvd isn't bootable?17:28
elfyI'd check the md5sum and make sure you're burning it properly - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto17:30
xubuntu829hello17:34
xubuntu829is it possible to connect a disk drive to a xubuntu box and install xubunto onto this disk from the running xubuntu?17:36
xubuntu829there is a startup disk creator for usb... so it should be not very different I guess17:37
xubuntu829I tried to google but found nothing useful17:37

darkblue_bhi all - first things first.. our Linux "distribution" has gone 7.0, we build on top of XUbuntu and once again we are just so pleased with the whole thing. well_laid_lawnyou might need to check your bios and make sure the computer can boot from the dvd19:36
xubuntu218it boots to several cds Hiram's for one19:37

xubuntu772hello19:57
xubuntu829is there a way to install xubunto to a second disk from an existing xubuntu system without booting the installer (anyhow) ?19:57
xubuntu772I've been having a minor issue in 13.04 recently where I'll be prompted about an avaiable update(s)  but viewing the updates shows no information about them, the update manager is blank. Rebooting makes no difference. Updates still install fine though.20:00
TheSheepxubuntu829: you could probably boot a virtual machine20:00
ui_!debootstrap | xubuntu82920:00
ubottuxubuntu829: debootstrap is used to create a !Debian or Ubuntu base system from scratch, without requiring the availability of !dpkg or !APT. It does this by downloading !.deb files from a mirror site, and carefully unpacking them into a directory you can eventually !chroot into.  See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebootstrapChroot for more information20:00
xubuntu772Not that I can think of xubuntu829, but I'm no expert20:01
ui_xubuntu829: ... or install ubiquity20:01
xubuntu772oops there ya go i guess :)20:01
ui_!ubiquity20:01
xubuntu829this is still about bootingh20:01
xubuntu829why does the installer need to booted?20:01
xubuntu829being root it could simply run on an existing installed xubuntu??20:02
TheSheepxubuntu829: it wasn't designed with that in mind20:02
ui_debootstrap and ubiquity can be run from a running system.20:02
ui_The second one is newbie-friendly, the first one gives more customization but has a more complex installation process20:02
TheSheepah, so it was designed for that after all, sorry20:03
ui_xubuntu772: open a terminal, type sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade20:03

xubuntu772thanks, like i said it still updates fine and all just no info shown in the update manager :)20:04
xubuntu772Anyway my post about my issue was really more of a bug report i guess, but wasn't sure where else to share it.20:04
xubuntu772I can view what they are in terminal, but casual/new users won't use terminal for updates.20:05
xubuntu772Sorry, the "Software Updater"20:06
xubuntu772Sorry, one last time with correct terminology: I've been experiencing a minor bug in 13.04 recently where I'll be prompted about an avaiable update(s)  but viewing the updates shows no information about them, the Software Updater is blank. Rebooting makes no difference. Updates still install fine though.  Anyone else?20:10
xubuntu829ui_: thanks... my google hits told me these can install the live cd itself...20:11
xubuntu829without having a CD written...20:11
xubuntu772kind of like a live usb 829?20:13

ui_is it this bug?20:14
xubuntu772Thanks ubottu, I think so, sounds the same.20:15
ui_xubuntu829: AFAIK they do not.20:17
xubuntu772Yep, I read it all and exact same issue, glad it's been properly reported, thanks again.20:18
ui_If you want a custom Live CD, you want to google for "remaster", and you'll find UCK (Ubuntu Customization Kit) or RemasterSys20:18
xubuntu772*Thanks ui, not ubottu :)20:19
ui_!remaster20:20
ubottuInterested in remastering the Ubuntu !LiveCD or !Alternate installer? See: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomization and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallCDCustomization - Or use tools such as http://uck.sourceforge.net/ or http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/DRU_Disc_Remastering_Utility20:20
xubuntu218  on the problem with the dvd not booting.  It isn't the dvd, I tried it with the laptop and it works; but the old Dell will boot to an old Mandriva dvd, just doesn't have room for it20:21
ui_xubuntu829: If you want to copy the default live CD, just do dd if=/dev/sr0 of=/path/to/file.iso bs=40M and then add a menu entry to grub https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/ISOBoot#Manually_editing_the_GRUB_files20:22
xubuntu218I cannot see why it sees some dvds as bootable and others not20:22
xubuntu499hello all20:41
xubuntu499i am very new to linux and have an issue with my install of 12.04 LTS, it seems after the install my graphics/dispaly is really bad a if its running on a 16 bit of sorts.20:43

pattii can upload a screenshot to show u how bad my graphics look20:51
pattiif it helps20:51
ali1234well, it might help20:51
ali1234there's a chance your screenshot will look normal to everyone else20:51
ali1234but that in itself would give some information20:52
pattiah20:52
ali1234i'm just looking for the bug report about this actually20:52
ali1234https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5911320:53
ubottuFreedesktop bug 59113 in Driver/intel "[IVB DP] Banded colors/reduced depth over Thunderbolt on Mac Mini Server 2012 (6,2)" [Normal,Resolved: fixed]20:53
ali1234note that the fix is labelled "drm/i915: set up PIPECONF explicitly on ilk-ivb"20:53
ali1234and was fixed very recently, so it won't be in 12.04 probably20:53
patti:(20:55

ali1234that looks ok to me21:06
pattidam21:06
ali1234but i half expected that21:06
ali1234the same was true for all the other people who had this problem21:06
pattioh ok21:06
ali1234although - you know the wallpaper is supposed to look like that?21:06
pattithat messed up like someone smered it around?21:07
ali1234the banding, it's supposed to be trees i think21:07
ali1234hang on let me check21:07
pattisee its almost like its out of focus21:07
ali1234can you take a photo of the screen for comparison?21:08
pattilike um... shadows ontop of shadows21:08
ali1234on the bird?21:08
pattiall over21:08
pattii see almost 2 birds21:08
ali1234even on windows and stuff?21:08
pattiwindows are fine21:08
ali1234yeah i'm pretty sure it's meant to look like that21:09
pattiwow what a mind screw that is21:09
pattihmm wait its still gotta be something wrong21:10
patticause even at the login its the same way21:11
ali1234well there still could be stuff you can see that doesn't show in the screenshot21:11
pattilike im running in 16 bit grapics not true21:11
pattiwish it was easier to explain :(21:12
ui_I agree, the background image looks normal to me.21:12
ali1234http://www.photoanswers.co.uk/upload/4366/TEST%20PRINT.jpeg21:13
ui_Does Google Images also look 16-bit?21:13
ali1234what does that look like?21:13
knomepatti, the wallpaper is designed to be like that. you can always change it if you don't like it.21:14
pattiits ok, not clear i guess.  also when i move a window (drag) its choppy while moving.  The problems are like if I uninstalled my video drivers in windows, then tried to run without them21:16
pattihttps://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59113  <--- is what my display looks like21:19

lokote_jonesIs it possible in Xubuntu to quickly swap between my HDMI sound and my headphones without being forced to do it one at a time?21:21
lokote_jonesLike, a button I can press that switches all sound from the HDMI port to headphone jack 2.21:21
pattihttp://askubuntu.com/questions/300889/xubuntu-13-04-intel-video-chip-bad-color-and-video21:28
pattithis may do it21:29
ali1234it might do, but you might need a newer kernel as well21:29
pattioh21:29
ali1234also you might find that same update in a PPA, which is probably better than building it yourself21:30
ali1234is there a panel applet for "settings" - ie it shows all the stuff in settings manager as a menu?21:31
knomeali1234, no21:32
pattiok so what would be the correct steps to try in this without breaking my system21:32
ali1234patti: not sure really. pretty much anything you do with this kind of low level software has the potential to break your system21:33
pattibummer21:33
ui_ali1234: in 12.04, the stuff in settings manager is a sub-menu of Applications.21:36
ali1234i'm not using 12.0421:36
ui_You may add a second Applications button and customize the menu21:36
ui_and add them manually21:36
ali1234hmm yeah that would work21:36
ali1234"Use custom menu file" yeah?21:37
PhoenixSTFhey guys, i am having issue alt tabing full screen applications, it seems not to work, any way to fix this?21:37
knomePhoenixSTF, can you be a bit more elaborate than "does not work" ?21:38
ui_Yes, that, or right-click the button >> Properties >> choose the Customize Menu button21:38
ali1234alacarte is horribly broken in 13.1021:38
ali1234also wouldn't that affect the main menu too?21:38
knomeali1234, try menulibre21:38
PhoenixSTFknome, useing full screen Aplication like Dota2, alt+tab does not work21:38
knomeali1234, there's a PPA for that21:39
ali1234why is the demo video running menulibre on unity - which doesn't have a menu?21:39
ali1234you can't disable the icon on applications menus21:42
ali1234ah!21:43
ali1234it's actually much easier than any of these suggestions21:44
ui_ali1234: you can change the icon to process-idle21:44
ui_which is an empty icon21:44
ali1234all you have to do is say "custom menu file" and then select /etc/xdg/menus/xfce-settings-manager.menu21:44
ali1234i won't even need to keep my custom thing in sync if new config applets are added21:45
knomeexcept they probably aren't added there21:46
ali1234why not?21:46
ali1234xfce4-settings-manager does read in this menu file when you run it21:48
knomeali1234, ok, then it's probably automatically updated21:49
knomeali1234, we're pulling stuff in the settings manager based on the category in .desktop files21:50
ali1234i don't see anything obviously missing at this point in time21:50
ali1234actually this settings menu has stuff that isn't in the manager too21:51
ali1234like synaptic21:51
knomethat's why i think it's not completely in sync.21:52
ali1234weirdly there's two different versions, one is in xdg-xubuntu21:52
ali1234they're different sizes too21:52
knomeand aiui, it shouldn't21:52
ali1234they seem to produce the same menus though21:52
ali1234maybe it just defines a menu category and then the actual items are pulled in based on that?21:52
knomeaiui, that's how it's technically done21:53
ali1234yeah it's full of logic and category definitions21:53
ali1234so this might not be identical to settings manager, but it looks like it is exactly what i wanted in the first place21:54
wanttolovedjangoIs there any difrence between xubuntu and ubuntu + xfce  ? I mean can the xubuntu users use #ubutnu ?22:09
wanttolovedjangodifference22:09
ochosiali1234: did you ever test the gtk3 indicators?22:09
ali1234i've been busy reporting bugs in the base stuff all day :)22:10
ochosii see :)22:10
ali1234it's next on my list though22:10
ochosias in: now? :)22:10
ali1234can do22:10
ali1234this is what i've got so far: http://imagebin.org/26905022:16
David-Awanttolovedjango: not much difference between xubuntu and ubuntu with the xubuntu-desktop package installed. there may be some overlap of applications and services unless you uninstall them manually.22:17
ochosiali1234: hm, that's a screenshot of your desktop..? :) so you're at square 1?22:30
ali1234yeah22:31
ochosiwell you have all the instructions22:31
ali1234ochosi: indicator-plugin isn't finding the libxfce4ui headers in /usr/local22:42
ochosiali1234: did you run "sudo ldconfig"?22:46
ali1234yes22:46
ochosithat's odd22:47
ochosiand you built it with --enable-gtk3?22:47
ochosii mean libxfce4ui22:47
ali1234yes22:47
ali1234hang on, it's asking for something different now22:49
ali1234ok, everything built and installed22:49
ali1234how do i backup the panel config?22:49
ali1234oh wait never mind22:49
ochosiali1234: don#t forget to install a few gtk3 indicators ;)22:53
ali1234if i have the gtk2 and gtk3 versions both installed will that cause problems?22:58
ochosii guess not22:59
ochosigtk2 indicators should be ignored22:59
ochosibut you can remove them if you want22:59
ochosiit's not problematic to re-install them22:59
ali1234ok i installed every indicator i could find and added the indicator applet - it's just empty23:00
ochosirestarted the panel?23:00
knomeochosi, ali1234: if you can, take it to -devel so all developers (micah) can follow23:00
ochosi(from the commandline ideally)23:00
ochosiyeah, i gotta go any second anyway23:00
knomeyup, and micah isn't here23:01
ochosiagreed23:01
knomethanks23:01
ali1234yeah i restarted it - made no difference23:02
ali1234even the indicator-sound-gtk2 doesn't show up, which is different23:02
