KayjeHi all. I'm getting an error when I try to reformat one of my hard drives; wondering if anyone has advice on how to fix it. "/dev/sdd: unrecognised disk label"00:07
WormDrinkso when is next xfce version ?00:11
=== bazhang_ is now known as bazhang
David-AKayje: i suspect it means the partition table is corrupted. i don't know if the drive itself is failing or if you ran some program that overwrote the first block of the drive.00:21
KayjeOh super, I will look into that, thank you :)00:21
David-AKayje: yes, do a proper diagnostics before assuming how to fix it00:22
KayjeDavid-A: The drive is completely empty, so I'm not worried about a reformat, but that is definitely a good point00:24
David-AKayje: there are a bunch of different tools to recover certain files from disks where the file system is damaged. one of them may be able to restore partition tables.00:24
David-AKayje: look at s.m.a.r.t status, what the drive itself think of its own health. there are command line tools, as well as nice guis for that.00:26
KayjeDavid-A: Just reading an article on S.M.A.R.T.; it also mentions using fsck on an unmounted drive00:27
David-AKayje: fsck is to check a filesystem. i suspect you have a problem with the partition table.00:27
KayjeDavid-A: Should I also check for bad blocks?00:28
David-AKayje: one way to check s.m.a.r.t status is the DiskUtility (may have a new name now).00:28
David-AKayje: i would check smart first.00:29
David-AKayje: you can via s.m.a.r.t tell the disk to make a self test, which will take a few minutes (or longer depending on level of thoroness)00:31
KayjeDavid-A: I am having trouble finding the DiskUtility but I'm fairly sure it's because I'm currently running a live session from the boot cd. Once the install finishes I will dig a little deeper. Only options available under "System" are "gigolo" "ibus" and of course "Task manager"00:33
David-AKayje: and don't take my assumption about the partition table for granted. check what "unrecognised disk label" really means, and that you selected the right disk.00:34
KayjeDavid-A: Thanks for all the help :) I'm brand-spanking-new to Linux00:36
David-AKayje: you can install programs in the live session. if it is a live cd, it will only be installed in the current session of course, and you must have enough ram, but that is usually no problem. the package should have "palimpsest" or "gnome-disk" somewhere in its name, unless its changed.00:47
David-AKayje: ^ the package for "disk utility" that is00:48
KayjeDavid-A: I've got GParted but don't see any disks utilities still. Searched /bin/ for both "palimpsest" and "gnome-disk" as well as usr/bin but don't see them in either. My google-fu indicates I should see something labeled "Disks" in my Settings Manager but don't see it there either; I may have to use a command line of some sort to load it00:56
KayjeWell, any disks utilities other than GParted of course00:56
KayjeLooks like it's time for the installation reboot; back in a few00:58
pattihello, could someone help me w a display/depth/width/16/24 bit issue I am having.01:05
pattirunning 12.04 lts01:06
pattiseems drivers are loaded from what i can tell, just display isnt clear, crisp, or focused01:06
KayjeInstall (finally) successful!01:07
David-AKayje: do you have a "disk utility" or "disks" now?01:09
KayjeDavid-A: I do not, and GParted has disappeared. It was suggested to another user with similar issue that they might be hidden01:10
KayjeTrying to find the link but of course I can't remember01:13
David-AKayje: gparted is not installed by default, but easily installed via software center, synaptic package manager (or apt-get if you know the exact name)01:13
pattihttp://paste.ubuntu.com/6038628/   *if anyone is willing to help01:16
holsteinpatti: i would try something like arandr, and see if you can set a native resolution01:18
Kayjepatti: I have just installed Arandr for use with my dual monitors and setting separate resolutions fixed my graininess01:19
KayjeDavid-A: Good to know, nabbed gparted in the software center01:20
KayjeSearching again for palimpsest in my package files01:20
David-Aor search for disk utility (it may have changed name at some point)01:22
KayjeDavid-A: Still don't see palimpsest or gnome-disk in my files. I'll see if I can use apt-get in the terminal01:22
David-AKayje: "in my files?" what about searching in software center or synaptic ?01:23
KayjeDavid-A: Ah, I think I was under the false impression that the disks utility would already be loaded. Found one in the software center01:24
David-AKayje: (kuriosa) you notices gparted was installed by default in the live session, but not in the installed system. there may be other progs that are installed in the one and not the other, and vise versa.01:30
KayjeThat makes sense, thank you01:31
David-AKayje: did you install on the disk that had "unrecognized disk label"?01:34
KayjeI did not. It looks like it doesn't have any partition tables set at all. It was previously NFTS01:36

c2tarunHi friends, I am using xubuntu 12.04. Can anyone please tell me what is difference between power management (from settings manager) and power management from Screensaver advanced tab?03:34
nerdtronc2tarun where is the screensaver advance tab?? i can't seem to find it03:49
c2tarungo to settings manager>Screensaver03:51
w30maybe power management gui is for people who don't have the screensaver installed?03:52
c2tarunhttp://www.zimagez.com/zimage/screenshot-thursday29august2013-092202ist.php03:52
c2tarunw30, actually when on battery my monitor is not fully turning off, its backlight is on.03:53
knomei would imagine the settings in screensaver tab are something else from power management (which is a xfc4 component)03:53
nerdtronc2tarun i don't have screensaver on mine.. yes I think it is a seperate program03:54
c2tarunnerdtron, I think its feature of xfce4.10, you are using 4.8 right?03:54
nerdtronI think the screen saver takes over power management when it is activated03:54
nerdtronc2tarun oh yes.. i'm in 4.10 sorry for the confusion03:55
c2tarunnerdtron, still you don't have screensave03:57
c2tarunI installed xubuntu yesterday and just upgraded to 4.10 and installed nothing else03:57
nerdtroni'm on 13.0403:58
c2tarunnerdtron, ohh.. :)03:59
nerdtronoh I remember...i uninstalled xscreensaver because it looks ugly03:59
c2tarun:|03:59
nerdtronthen I installed gnome-screensaver because I want a good looking lookscreen03:59
nerdtronanyway. still it's a mystery on how does the screensaver power options and power management relate to each other04:00
c2tarunyeah04:01
patti:( can anyone help with a graphics issue on 12.04 lts04:38
pattiafter fresh install it seems like i am running with no video drivers, yet they are installed.  my screen (background and logon splash screen look as if i am running in a 16 bit mode, very choppy looking)04:40
Myrttiknome: the blogpost and g+ update are gone now and now he links to your blogentry07:42
Myrttian old one, but still07:45
MarkusDBXAs mir has been elected instead of x11 in the main ubuntu distribution as of 13.10, is there any risk that mir-only apps will not be working in future releases of xubuntu? Or will there be a compatibility layer making mir-only apps work in xfce?08:03

ubottujackson_: Hi!, Welcome to #xubuntu! Feel free to ask questions and help people out. The channel guidelines are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines. Enjoy your stay!11:36
jackson_Just curious... if i want some help with my xubuntu, should i ask here or in #ubuntu?11:36
bgardnerjackson_: Start here, go ahead and ask your questions11:37
jackson_Okay, thanks. I'm seeing an error that says 'Error: opening the cache (E:malformed line 61 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)., E:The list of sources could not be read., E:The package list or status file could not be parsed or opened.)'.11:41
jackson_Its preventing me from using the ubuntu software center.11:42
bgardnerjackson_: Please do this and give us the URL it returns: cat /etc/apt/sources.list | pastebinit11:43
jackson_the url on line 61, i assume?11:45
jackson_deb-src http://archive.canonical.com/ partner11:46
bgardnerjackson_: That's what I want to see, but there may be items above or below that relate.  Or review the file yourself and see if it teaches you something.11:46
bgardnerjackson_: Did you edit this file yourself?  I'm guessing that line should be 'deb-src http://archive.canonical.com/ precise partner' or similar, match your own version of course.11:55
jackson_Ill try that!11:56
jackson_Thank you very much! I added "ubuntu precise" after the slash and it worked like a charm.11:57
bgardnerjackson_: You are running Precise, yes?11:58
jackson_yup11:58
bgardnerjackson_: Okay, excellent - didn't want to give you yet more problems.11:58
jackson_thanks for the help, im kinda new to linux and you have been a life saver11:58
bgardnerjackson_: Glad to help, come on back if you need anything else.11:59

vice_oh god, its realy default, so why the hell skype always asking me about browser priority?!14:05
lokote_jonesvice_: For what ever reason Chrome constantly "forgets" that I set it to default for me too.14:08
lokote_jonesvice_: I don't have a solution; but I raise my fist in solidarity at this issue.14:08
Sysichrome tries to use some own random method for set it to be default, you need to use exo-settings or update-alternatives to actually set it14:09

xubuntu079hello15:49
bgardnerxubuntu079: Hello15:49
lokote_jonesI just finished recovering my 1TB hard drive. Does anyone have a Xubuntu friendly storage method that can easily handle 2-5 TB of data? Or should I just buy some hard drives and do it by hand or what?15:54
holsteinlokote_jones: anything really.. there are many ways to mirror or backup.. i would try implementing something you will do, that works for you.. *all* of these options will require an alternate location15:56
holsteinthe included tools in main ubuntu work well15:56
lokote_jonesCan the included tools do differential backups?15:57
holsteinlokote_jones: i would look at the specific documentation to make certain your needs are being met.. but AFAIK, yes15:57
holsteinwhat do i do? i mirror the data i want to several locations, manually15:58
lokote_jonesWell; I want to keep a backup of my drive local and then take a hard drive to my work.15:58
bgardnerlokote_jones: I do something similar to what you describe with rsync.15:59
holsteinlokote_jones: nothing is preventing you from taking a hard drive with you. if you want to "sync" that data betweem 2 OS's with an external hard drive, that is a different story15:59
holsteinwhat you need to do is, describe *exactly* what it is you are trying to do, and a volunteer can help you15:59
holstein!info grsync15:59
ubottugrsync (source: grsync): GTK+ frontend for rsync. In component universe, is optional. Version 1.2.3-1ubuntu1 (raring), package size 147 kB, installed size 635 kB15:59
lokote_jonesNo syncing necessary. I just don't want to have to clean my underwear again if my hard drive poops out. =(15:59
holstein^ is a nice gui way to learn about using rsync16:00
lokote_jonesI was lucky it only cost me $39.99 to rescue my drives.16:00
holsteinlokote_jones: *all* hard drives fail..16:00
holsteinlokote_jones: its up to you the level you want to get into for backing up, or cloning or mirroring16:00
holsteinlokote_jones: even the external drive you are refercing purchasing will fail16:01
lokote_jonesRight; buyt the idea is that all 3 drives "shouldn't" die on me.16:01
lokote_jonesAtleast not all at once.16:01
bgardnerlokote_jones: Theoretically.16:02
lokote_jonesbgardner: Hopefully.16:02
holsteinlokote_jones: if you just go ahead and plan on *all* of them failing, since they will, you'll be fine16:02
lokote_jonesCan rsync do a differential backup?16:03
holsteinlokote_jones: there is also the house-fire argument.. you can have 17 hard drives mirroring data locally, and if your house were to catch fire, that would be the end of that16:03
holsteinlokote_jones: *you* can do diff or whatever backup you want with *many* tools in *any* os16:03
lokote_jonesholstein: I spoke to my boss at work and he said I could just bring in a drive and keep it in our fire proof safe. He said it's fine. So that gives me a "little" more protection.16:03
holsteinsure.. but files dont get added in any way while its in the safe.. are you going to have 2? and swap them out? how often? .. if you make something more complex than you are wiling to deal wth, you wont deal with it16:05
lokote_jonesRight now my idea is to have 3 drives. One "in the computer". One  external. then one that I rotate into the safe once a month. (I'm pretty anal about stuff when I start so I don't think I will quit if I can just figure out how to do it)16:06
lokote_jonesUgh. Ubuntu One would be awesome but its $150 per month. =(16:09
lokote_jonesFor a terrabyte16:09
holsteinlokote_jones: host your own free version locally, or go with something "cheaper"16:10
bgardnerlokote_jones: To be fair, that's an awful lot of data that you are asking them to store.16:10
holsteini do not use ubuntuone but i set someone up on it, and his hard drive failed, and it literally repopulated everything after logging in.. very slick for him.. and easy16:10
holsteinlokote_jones: he did not pay anthing to recover any data.. and if your drive hadnt been spinning, you could have paid more that $40 for that data recovery..16:12
lokote_jonesbgardner: I agree. holstein: I agree on that too. I was just lucky this time.16:12
holsteinthe only reason not to use ubuntu one is the actual sharing of ones data with a 3rd party like that.. the price is resonable for the space16:13
holsteinno need to sync *everything* up on ubuntuone either..16:13
lokote_jonesholstein: Not to sound like a major nerd but the one thing I didn't want to loose was my 800GB of anime.16:13
bgardnerlokote_jones: I actually use 4 drives + rsync in a configuration similar to what you describe for your plan, and it works well for me.  I don't use Ubuntu One for all backups for both of the reasons holstein just gave.16:14
lokote_jonesThat is my major crux. It's making sure all my art, pictures, videos, and all that junk is never lost.16:14
holsteinlokote_jones: then, you pay to backup 800gb's of anime.. one way or the other16:14
lokote_jonesDoes $86usd sound fair for a 2TB hard drive?16:16
holsteinlokote_jones: i would ask in a hardware channel.. or search something like amazon and compare.. this is the xubuntu support channel.. you can use #xubuntu-offtopic16:17
lokote_jonesholstein: Sorry. Thanks.16:17

mappsi was going to try and recover data off a damaged hdd later also21:30
shk2well, it was from a Windows machine.21:31
shk2tried my best so far to rescue what is possible/sensible with ddrescue21:31
mappsyea thats what mines from21:31
shk2had it connected with a USB connector21:31
mappsyep same but mine makes a clicking noise21:31
mappshave you tried connecting internally?21:32
shk2found the location of the valuable bytes on it21:32
shk2yes, that is where this problem comes from21:32
mappsah21:32
mappscan you not go back to usb then sorry21:32
shk2I plugged it into the SATA port, and now Xubuntu won't boot21:32
shk2throwing errors about this disk21:32

shk2(which I appreciate and understand)21:33
shk2still would like to boot from the main HDD21:33
shk2there is only one drive in the fstab21:33
shk2or mstab21:33
shk2(or whatever matters...)21:33
shk2sorry. still kind of a noob21:33
shk2at least I got into Grub2 from the main HDD21:34
shk2but then it hangs with these errors21:34
mappsi never now how to recover data21:34
mappsseems to be hard to find good info21:34
shk2I really feel like sharing my journey somewhere, once it might be finished21:36
shk2it was amazing, a lot of stuff to learn for me21:36
shk2so you are as well struggling with a broken Win drive?21:36
mappswell21:37
mappsi got 1 3.5" sata drive damaged21:37
mappsand a few laptop satas which i got a usb enclosure for21:37

mappshm like clicking21:38
mappsso not sure21:38
shk2ok. I heard it is not too bad if thaat happens21:38
mappswindows detects but doesnt appear in my computer21:38
shk2but, unless you did it already, get the partition table from it21:38
shk2without that you are probably really fucked21:38
shk2but otherwise I would like to share what I had done, if you are interested21:39
mappshow do you do that/21:41
mappsyea21:41
shk2well, I did some research21:42
shk2and then made a plan21:42
shk2so, first you want the MFT21:42
shk2so you use icat to get record 0 of the partition, which is the MFT21:43
shk2you do this from the image you tried to get with ddrescue21:43
shk2just a rough run21:43
shk2if you run icat in verbose mode, it will tell you which bytes it is reading from the disk21:44
shk2so then, you use ddrescue so try to recover as much as possible of these21:44
shk2then, you use analyzeMFT.py to get a csv of all the files recoverable, from the MFT21:44
mapdam21:45
shk2then select the records you would like to save, and then use icat again, with the -v switch, to figure out, which bytes these are21:45
mapsorry my netbook BSODd21:45
mapdamn windows 721:45
mapsorry dude last thing i saw was me saying how do you do that21:45
shk2and then run ddrescue just on those areas of your harddisk21:45
shk2ok, sorry21:46
shk2shall I "repeat"21:46
shk2?21:46
mapya please21:46
shk2> well, I did some research21:46
shk2> and then made a plan21:46
shk2> so, first you want the MFT21:46
shk2>so you use icat to get record 0 of the partition, which is the MFT21:46
shk2>you do this from the image you tried to get with ddrescue21:46
shk2>just a rough run21:47
shk2> if you run icat in verbose mode, it will tell you which bytes it is reading from the disk21:47
shk2>so then, you use ddrescue so try to recover as much as possible of these>21:47
shk2> then, you use analyzeMFT.py to get a csv of all the files recoverable, from the MFT21:47
shk2> then select the records you would like to save, and then use icat again, with the -v switch, to figure out, which bytes these are21:47
shk2<map> sorry my netbook BSODd21:47
mapMFT?21:47
shk2and then the rest21:47
shk2master file table21:47
mapah21:47
shk2I learned a lot the last days21:48
mapso icat gives us record 0 then we use ddrescue on what the result of icat?21:48

csedermap: probably some driver issue with NetworkManager, if Xubuntu uses NetworkManager. The installer probably uses the old ifup22:06
