[04:41] how to install mir desktop [04:50] getting this error while installaing the mir desktop : http://pastebin.com/tVsEfvNU [04:50] the start of mir is there already [04:50] !mir [04:50] Mir is the next-generation display server currently under development by Canonical and Ubuntu. It's slated for inclusion in Ubuntu 14.04. For more information on it, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Mir/Spec . For code, see https://launchpad.net/mir [04:54] arunkumar413, run this command in the terminal and pastebin all the text grep -vr "^#" /etc/apt/sources.list{,.d/} [04:56] wilee-nilee: http://pastebin.com/qjxfdgqC [05:00] wilee-nilee: r u there [05:01] arunkumar413, You added to much to that sources.list.d it should just be deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/mir-team/system-compositor-testing/ubuntu saucy main [05:01] Heh gotta give the helper more than a minute and 1/2 to respond [05:02] You can just gksudo nautilus and navigate to that sources.list.d file and edit it and then run a update then try again. [05:02] gotta go start a wash be back in 10 [05:06] wilee-nilee: this is the content of the sources.list file: http://pastebin.com/3GvayRc4 [05:18] arunkumar413, In /etc/apt is a folder called sources.list.d that is where the mir text file is. notice in that command you ran first this. 19./etc/apt/sources.list.d [05:18] you just posted the regular sources.list there two types, additional repos are added to this other one [05:22] wilee-nilee: updating [05:23] arunkumar413, I would also in the sources.list open the deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu saucy partner repo by removing the # it has the restricted extras and other good things there. [05:24] Cool, the sources an be a bit confusing till you know. ;) [05:24] getting this error: sudo apt-get install mir-demos unity-system-compositor Reading package lists... Done E: Invalid record in the preferences file /etc/apt/preferences.d/50-pin-mir.pref, no Package header [05:25] arunkumar413, Can you paste bin what is in that text file in the sources.list.d folder and the commands leading to the error and all the text, in a pastebin. [05:27] arunkumar413, Did you run a update after the edit of that text? [05:27] wilee-nilee: yes [05:28] arunkumar413, I see no packages yet in that ppa, not sure you should be trying this anyway to be honest the mir thning is not even done. [05:29] supposed to be in 14.04 as of now it is partially in 13.10, but not a done deal. [05:40] wilee-nilee: i think it's installling now. [05:41] cool, strange that they do not list the packages is all [05:42] might be in another linked ppa, just a guess [05:47] wilee-nilee: done, with installing. how to be sure that it's installed correclty and launch mir [05:51] arunkumar413, No idea, there is a wiki on it in the PPA, I assume that is where you started from. === elmargol_ is now known as elmargol [09:08] 'Morning all [09:09] hello [09:15] hi ikonia ...insomnia here === SoulOfTheInterne is now known as ToBeFree [11:47] hello, is the daily of 31 Aug 2013 based on XMir ? I tried in Virtualbox and found X Server running [11:56] streulma, Mir/XMir doesn't run by default in every hardware/driver combination (and VM is definitely one that it won't run under) [11:58] ok Daekdroom, I want to try Ubuntu 13.10 on my Macbook Pro Retina natively, with X Server the fonts are scaled and not good. I don't know how it is with Mir/XMir [11:59] streulma: it's no different [12:00] (or would be no different at this time) [12:19] We're 2 days past the feature freeze. I don't think it'll change until the release. [12:19] (meh, I just realized we got past the feature freeze and I have yet to test the development version) [12:25] streulma: There are quite a lot of font settings [12:27] penguin42: oh yes ? [12:29] streulma: I'd first check in the display settings that the resolution it's got is the full retina res [12:29] hmm - the font settings gui seems to have gone :-( [12:32] Possibly has been for quite awhile. I don't remember it being in 13.04 either. [12:36] streulma: If you install 'unity-tweak-tool' ther eis a fonts tab on it that can change the font scaling factors, antialiasing, hinting and fonts - be careful you can probably make it much worse as well as better! [12:45] Hi all again [15:20] Probably a silly question, but how stable is the Alpha 2 release? I mean, is it pretty close to beta quality, or still pretty much dogfood? [15:51] PatrickDickey: hit and miss, until release, you've got to keep the intention of "may break" [15:59] ikonia: So, next week (according to the release schedule) is when Beta1 will be released? [16:00] according to the schedule, yes [16:01] Thanks. I think I'll take the chance and install it. It's on my laptop, so I really won't be out much if it fails. [16:03] that's the right attitude [16:04] Off hand, do you know if they made any changes to Rhythmbox and how it's handled? [16:05] not that I'm aware of [16:29] hi running saucy but have a graphics issue [16:29] after running nvidia-settings I thinkit messed up my xorg? [16:30] i am on a laptop with optimus and overall it has been excellent on 13.10 [16:31] basically I had the low graphics mode box coming up and nothing would work from that point. I booted to root and reinstalled the nvidia common and now can login - BUT i just get a black screen. I can bring up a terminal and run apps from there. Hence beiong in xchat now [16:32] however the apps have no system borders or controls and I cannot tab between them. [16:33] is this xorg OR nvidia please? how can I reset to basic xorg conf as the xorg.conf file doesnt seem to be in the X11 file? [16:35] right tried an xorg reinstall [16:44] hi back a reinstall of xorg did not help [16:44] infact i can no longer login as myself === streulma_ is now known as streulma [16:55] jarope_: ok, go back a step [16:55] jarope_: What did you install in what order, and what have you had working? [17:08] hi penguin42 [17:09] ok I have had everything working fantastic for weeks [17:09] THEN [17:09] I tried the nvidia-settings to see if any updates had moved the multi monitor situation forward [17:10] so nothing changed until I rebooted and was greeted with the "low graphic" mode bix [17:10] which wouldnt let me change the configs etc just see the log, which I couldnt see any obvious problems in [17:10] ok, so you're betting it's some nvidia setting that's unhappy [17:11] yep [17:11] * penguin42 hasn't run the closed nvidia drivers for a while [17:11] now in the past I know you could go and remove the xorg.conf file and everything would sort itself out [17:11] but xorg.conf isnt in X11 [17:12] there is .backup and .failsafe [17:12] jarope_: Right so a normal Ubuntu install doesn't have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf [17:12] and as 13.10 is MIR [17:12] jarope_: X configs tend to go into /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d [17:12] ok [17:12] hmm, I don't know anything about Mir [17:13] me neither and dont think it has anything to do with this [17:13] it doesn't [17:13] thanks for confirm ali1234 [17:13] nvidia stopped using xorg.conf a few versions ago [17:13] i don't know how you reset the config on new versions [17:13] probably by uninstalling the driver with jockey [17:13] well i tried a reinstall [17:14] apt-get install --reinstall [17:14] would there be anything in my home area that could be being called? .nvidia-? [17:15] or in .conf [17:15] no [17:15] ok [17:15] so jockey would be a good place to start [17:16] nvidia-settings saves settings in ~/.nvidia-settings [17:16] will try that if there are no other suggestions. Last time I had this I did a reinstall but have set up so much now I am loathed to do that again. I appreciate that it is dev so I am not complaining [17:16] but that can't affect the login screen [17:17] well I get the login screen now but after that nothing [17:17] ctl+alt+t works to bring up terminal [17:17] jarope_: What happens if you make yourself a new user or login as guest? [17:17] I am logged in as guest now [17:17] blank screen no unity [17:17] no system borders on aps [17:18] ok, so it's not just specific to one user [17:18] and they are all stacked one on top of the other so to open anything else I have to open new terminal . penguin42 no affecting all to different extents [17:19] for me no login just jumps out and back to login screen [17:20] yeh so I'd agree at trying to use jockey to remove the nvidia stuff and see what state you get to and then add it back [17:23] ok there was no jockey [17:23] no jockey-cli ? [17:23] gtk-jockey [17:23] oo didnt try jockey-cli [17:23] ok will be back [17:24] !find jockey [17:24] Found: jockey-common, jockey-gtk, jockey-kde [17:25] i'm putting gtk in wrong place [17:25] DOH [17:26] nope not there [17:27] anyway removed a nvidia file from my home area so gonna try login to that [17:27] thanks for help guys === Kow_ is now known as Kow === bazhang_ is now known as bazhang [21:04] hi, ive upgraded to 13.10 and now cant switch keyboard layout with Alt + shift [21:05] if i assign other weird shortcuts it works [21:05] anyone can help me figure out why? [21:06] Koko0, make another user and see if it happens there. [21:06] ok... [21:06] btw new users leave garbage on the disk? === Fyodorovna is now known as sporkeee [21:07] No [21:08] You said you upgraded this a fresh install? [21:13] no fresh install [21:14] from 13.04 [21:14] on the new user its the same [21:15] well its kind of weird, i can't assign Alt + Shift from the Region & language Window [21:15] but from keyboard settings i can [21:15] but it doesnt work... [21:34] Koko0, have you tried another keyboard or OS? [21:36] one sec, i will try in vm [21:37] working perfectly in an xp vm [21:40] I would download the daily and try it to get a clean look at it. [21:41] well, cant do this...its still my main os [21:44] ...? [21:44] Oh. You mean you'd lose data? [21:45] im afraid of daily builds [21:45] cant lose this machine [21:45] ... [21:46] If you upgraded to 13.10 and is upgrading the packages constantly, you're using the same packages that are shipped within the daily build [21:46] (although I can't guarantee that the daily installer works as good :P) [21:46] well, if thats what u mean by daily so yes [21:46] i thought u ment like compile it myself or something [21:47] Nah. [21:47] !daily [21:47] Daily builds of the CD images of the current development version of Ubuntu are available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ [21:48] isnt it the same as apt-get update & upgrade?... [21:48] dist-upgrade is needed sometimes, but yeah. [21:48] so im on the daily build === sporkeee is now known as wilee-nilee [22:43] this is the ubuntu 13.10 irc channel? [22:43] yep [22:44] well i was here with keybaord problem, and now tried with live cd [22:44] same problem, not able to choose Alt Shift as a keyboard layout switcher === Guest46080 is now known as wgrant === wgrant is now known as Guest34878
