me-1hi...will Lubuntu work on Pentium III with 256 ram and what version is latest LTS04:55
me-1hi...so Lubuntu does not have a LTS release...?06:20
JohnDoe_71Rusme-1: http://askubuntu.com/questions/202844/when-will-the-next-lts-version-of-lubuntu-be-released06:21
qingluo1hi all, can any one show me how can i find the discription about details of bootup lubuntu, including first boot file(shell script) changing environment. thanks a lot08:09
bioterror!upstart08:10
ubottuUpstart is meant to replace the old Sys V Init system with an event-driven init model.  For more information please see: http://upstart.ubuntu.com/08:10
qingluo1does event-driver init model means event.d?08:12
qingluo1my / filesystem doesn't have than folder.08:12
qingluo1im using lxde filesystem. how can i found the first shell script08:13
bioterrorqingluo1, maybe you should explain what you want to do08:18
qingluo1im compare two root filesystem which one is based lxde, while another is based busybox. lxde's can initial serial port and VGA as shell . but the busybox one just can initial one of them to a shell input. i wanna to get understand how it acomplish such function. besides, they use same kernel lubuntu image08:22
bioterror!lxde08:23
ubottuLXDE ( http://lxde.org/ ) is the Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment used by !Lubuntu. To install from Ubuntu: « sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop ». See http://lubuntu.net/ for more information, and join #lubuntu for support.08:23
bioterror!filesystem08:23
ubottuAn explanation of how files and directories are organized on Ubuntu, and how they can be manipulated, can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LinuxFilesystemTreeOverview  see also: man hier08:23
bioterroras you can see, LXDE isn't a filesystem, it's a desktop environment08:24
qingluo1o  sorry about my bad discription.  i'm using linaro alip's workout08:26
qingluo1which top layer based on lxde.08:27
qingluo1is there anyway to find the bootup order in a nonstandard root filesystem? except follow source code(it seems a little big work)08:32
tux_has anyone tried Trisquel? it is basically Lubuntu without the Ubuntu bloat, advertising and proprietary stuff09:33
tux_and its based on Ubuntu LTS09:33
bioterrorwhat's then this ubuntu bloat?09:33
tux_Ubuntu needs at least 1GB RAM and 1GHz CPU, and has bloat like Zeitgeist to better cater the advertising bloat to make you buy stuff found on Ubuntu One, Ubuntu Software Center, Amazon, Rythmbox...etc09:35
bioterrorso, how is this then no-bloat when it's based on ubuntu lts09:36
* bioterror does not understand09:36
tux_ask them on #trisquel09:37
tux_bbl i just downloaded lubuntu :P09:37
phillwbioterror: we have an LTS?... when did that sneak out? :P09:51
bioterrorit's always better to use LTS ubuntu than live on the moment ;)09:52
phillwbioterror: Well, as lubuntu do not have an LTS, I'd not touch it with a barge pole :D 13.10 is looking quite good as our alpha for 14.04 :P09:58
Myrttioh my, it's bioterror12:16
boopla7Installed lubuntu alongside windos. Now i dont need windows anymore. How do i recover the disk space allocated to windows? Is there a way to do it without reinstalling lubuntu (using entire disk this time)?13:33
=== lordsame is now known as SergioMeneses
optimusprimemhi, Ubuntu run fine in this configuration: 2GB RAM, HDD 5400 RPM, AMD Fusion C-60 (Dual Core)? <- this is a netbook17:19
justin__when I try booting off a lubuntu intallation disk and select either "try lubuntu without installing" or "install lubuntu" I get the following messages "error: failure reading sector 0x4f500 from 'cd0' Press any key to continue" and then the message "0.323258] Kernal panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unkown-block(0,0)"17:27
justin__is there something wrong with my grub? or do I need to change the way my hardrive is partitioned?17:29
imacg5hi¨17:53
imacg5can you guys help me with a problem regarding installing lubuntu on an imac g517:55
imacg5it crashes when I try and install17:56
shwouchk_Hello17:57
shwouchk_I have a laptop which I want to have connected to an external monitor 99% of the time. The other 1% I would use its screen. I want the laptop to be closed usually to save space, and to use external KB/mouse. The external monitor supports a higher resolution than the laptop screen, so I won't use screen duplication, and extended desktop is annoying when one of the monitors can't be viewed, so also out of the question. Is there a simple18:03
shwouchk_way to enable the external only configuration, but that would switch to the internal monitor when the external monitor is disconnected, like regular ubuntu/windows/etc provide? What software does regular ubuntu use for this? Thanks in advance18:03
imacg5hi18:13
shwouchk_hi18:13
imacg5lubuntu hangs when i try and install18:13
imacg5am running from disc18:14
imacg5on an imac g518:14
imacg5are you there18:15
shwouchk_(im here like you) does it hang when booting after the install, during the install, or when starting the installer?18:15
imacg5when i launch the installer from desktop18:15
shwouchk_imacg5: keep in mind that I'm not your support staff, and in fact nobody here is.18:16
imacg5i know18:16
imacg5sorry18:16
shwouchk_imacg5: before you did anything in the installer? just the launch itself of the installer?18:16
imacg5i boot from cd, and after a while i see the desktop18:17
imacg5it has one icon, "install lubuntu 12.10"18:17
imacg5i doubleclick, and it hangs18:17
shwouchk_hmm18:19
ianorlincan you check disc for errors?'18:20
imacg5while in lubuntu, or on another computer18:20
ianorlinwhen first booting18:20
shwouchk_imacg5: just the installation or the whole computer? Are you able to press A+C+F1 to get to a tty (press A+F7 to get back to xorg afterwards)? Do you see the capslock light blink when you press capslock?18:20
shwouchk_ah, that's a good idea also.18:21
imacg5the capslock light blinks, and upon pressing a+c+f1 the fans started whirring but nothing happened18:21
shwouchk_hmm18:22
shwouchk_that's odd18:22
shwouchk_I would do what ianorlin suggested18:23
imacg5do i check for errors before pressing enter18:24
imacg5when booting from disc, i press c to boot from cd and then press enter to launch lubuntu18:25
shwouchk_imacg5: I don't remember how the menu looks, but I think that if you pay attention, then there is an option to check CD for defects at some point while booting. alternatively I would run md5hash on /dev/sr0 or whatever the device with the CD is (from another OS, I'm not sure whether it would work from the same OS), and compare with the posted hash18:27
imacg5okay ill try that thanks18:27
imacg5i don't see any way to check for errors18:29
ianorlinwhen you first boot up isn't there a menu?18:29
ianorlinalso did you check the md5 sum of your iso?18:30
imacg5there is a menu white text on black18:30
imacg5but i don't see a way to check for errors18:31
imacg5what should i write18:31
shwouchk_imacg5: it is possible that you need to hold down the shift button while booting to get a menu18:32
shwouchk_ah, you said there's a menu18:32
ianorlinnot sure that brings up check for errors message18:32
imacg5i do get a menu, it says welcome to lubuntu 12.1018:33
imacg5brb18:34
shwouchk_imacg5: "md5sum <thefile.iso>" and compare to the md5 posted online where you downloaded it18:34
imacg5in the menu?18:35
ianorlinfrom tty I think18:35
shwouchk_imacg5: from a working machine, the one you downloaded the iso to18:36
shwouchk_ianorlin: you wouldn't happen to have a clue about my question, would you?18:36
ianorlinwhat was your question?18:37
shwouchk_ianorlin: (it was long) in short, how to have the screen layout update upon monitor in/out in a way similar to what other distros OS/s provide, and/or what other distros use to enable such functionality18:39
ianorlinum not sure about multiple monitors18:40
ianorlinI might try to find something18:40
shwouchk_:()18:40
ianorlindo you have arandr18:41
ianorlinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/MultiDisplay18:43
justin__when I try booting off a lubuntu intallation disk and select either "try lubuntu without installing" or "install lubuntu" I get the following messages "error: failure reading sector 0x4f500 from 'cd0' Press any key to continue" and then the message "0.323258] Kernal panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unkown-block(0,0)"18:47
justin__how can i fix this and get lubuntu to install?18:47
ianorlinhave you checked for errors or is thta not on the menu18:47
shwouchk_ianorlin: I do, but as far as I see it does not support automatic configuration change - only running a given configuration as a script.18:48
ianorlinno to see if the disk is good18:48
shwouchk_justin__: sounds like a bad CD to me18:49
justin__shwouchk: I have used multiple CD's though18:50
ianorlindid you check the iso?18:50
ianorlinalso burn as slow as you can18:50
justin__i got the iso from lubuntu.net18:51
ianorlinno the md5 sum of the iso18:51
imacg5i didn't get to choose that, mine just went straight to the desktop, and it hangs whenever i open a new window18:51
justin__shwouchk: when i try to boot from kubuntu, lubuntu or ubuntu disks I have the same problems, but arch and chakra disks work fine18:52
shwouchk_justin__: as ianorlin said, check md5 of the iso first please18:54
shwouchk_also imacg5.18:54
imacg5i have the md5 value of my iso file, but what do i compare that to18:54
ianorlinwiat are you using alt installer?18:55
imacg5i was linked to this site http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/quantal/release/18:56
imacg5i dont see no md5 value18:56
shwouchk_ianorlin: usually the page where you downloaded the iso from18:57
shwouchk_has the md5 of it18:58
ianorlinhttp://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/quantal/release/18:58
ianorlinfor 12.1018:58
imacg5yes that is where i downloaded it from18:59
imacg5but where do i find md5 value18:59
shwouchk_imacg5: I would try to search for the word "md5" on that page19:03
imacg5it's identical19:06
imacg5okay thanks for all the help guys, really appreciate it19:09
imacg5gtg19:10
justin__so I'm redownloading a lubuntu iso directly this time and not a torrent19:13
justin__and then ill burn it as slow as possible19:13
justin__and see if i still have the same errors19:13
justin__so I checked the md5sum on my .iso file and it's correct and when i burned to a disk i burned as slow as possible22:24
justin__but i still got the same errors as before "error: failure reading sectore 0x4f500 from 'cd0'." and " 0.323258] Kernal panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) "22:31
justin__anyone?22:47
