iUnify I am looking for a way to organize my applications in Ubuntu.  I have all of the Studio apps for example - and I am very happy with the way that Studio organizes them... namely in an approiately named folder with the link to each app... sub folders if neccessary... secondly with the fact that menu is right at the top of the screen where the Ubuntu menu is.... so, I would like VERY much to find a way to do something of this nature in 03:21
iUnify Ubuntu menu than I would like to at least be able to have an application launcher I can create folders in and sub folders with shortcuts to the apps.  Like Mac has.... whatever, just somthing.  Any help!?  :D03:21
iUnifyHey Guys.... you know the Ubuntu Search...? For example, when I click the "Applications" tab... it gives me results in 3 fields: Recently Used, Installed and Available For Download... can I consolidate that to just Installed? I dont want to see ALL the other results and have separate categories.... just keep it simple.04:03
Unit193"Ubuntu Search"?  Is this in USC or something?04:07
phil_234234hey there, need some help, system does not boot anymore05:09
phil_234234where are logs i can have a look at?05:09
mapps um /var/log05:20
tyguy678Hey, while I was installing Xubuntu from a live CD my comp got unplugged, am I screwed?05:28
Unit193Meaning do you have to start over?  Well, depends on which part you lost power, but I'd say it's a safe bet.05:30
tyguy678It lost power when after the "Who Are You?" stuff and it was installing the system folder.05:31
Unit193I'd go for a re-install, easier and you don't really have any files to lose.05:33
tyguy678OK, I'll try it.05:34
tyguy678The re-install is working so far, thanks. :)05:39
Unit193Sure.05:46
tyguy678is the installing system screen supposed to take a very long time? I'm actually suspicious it may have crashed.06:06
cfhowletttyguy678, define "long"06:07
tyguy678oh, never mind, it was just stuck on the same part of the progress bar for 1006:08
tyguy678minutes06:08
tyguy678the installation just finished06:08

yeyemanHi, I accidentally kubuntu-desktop08:24
yeyemanhow can I remove it?08:24
elfywhat version08:25
well_laid_lawn!pure-xfce08:25
well_laid_lawn!purexfce08:26
ubottuIf you want to remove all !KDE and !Gnome packages and have a default !Xubuntu system follow the instructions here « http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce »08:26
elfyyeyeman: to remove it on 13.04 http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntucat/tag/pure-xubuntu/ for versions pre 13.04 http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexubuntu08:26
yeyemanelfy: that does not work08:27
yeyemanI get a bunch of "unable to locate package"08:27
elfythen perhaps you didn't install it08:28
yeyemanno it's there08:29
elfywhat is kubuntu-desktop or it and all the apps it will install08:30
yeyemanit's all the apps as well I think08:31
yeyemannow when I start the comp I see this horrible animated wallpaper08:31
yeyemanand I tried apt-get remove kubuntu-desktop08:32
yeyemanbut KDE plasma windows is still an option in the login menu08:32
elfyapt-get remove kubuntu-desktop won't help08:34
well_laid_lawnkubuntu-desktop is a meta package - just one package that installs lots of others, you have to remove the installed packages sepearately08:34
well_laid_lawnwhy that hasn't been sorted out yet is beyond me08:34
yeyemanWell, what I'm most anxious to get rid of is the start up stuff08:35
well_laid_lawnyou have to follow the purexfce/purexubuntu links above08:36
elfyyeyeman: if you are running something like http://pastebin.com/ruVJUjYH and it tells you unable to locate package then you have problems08:36
yeyemanyep08:38
yeyemanI just wanted to try a new desktop08:38
yeyemanI did it before with gnome 308:39
yeyemanand that did not take over my comp and install 450 apps08:39
elfyplease use pastebin to show us the exact command you are using and the error message08:40
yeyemanhold on I might be able to fix it08:42
yeyemaneverybody hold your breath :P08:43
TheSheepyou get "unable to locate package" when you didn't run 'apt-get update' for a long time, and the versions of packages have changed on the server08:44
TheSheepjust running update should fix it08:44
yeyemanwhat's the difference between update and upgrade?08:45
elfyupdate updates the package lists08:45
TheSheepupdate checks what versions are on the servers, upgrade actually installs the latest versions08:45
yeyemankde sucks08:49
yeyemanbtw08:49
yeyemanI'm a bit of a minimalist, but I actually can't understand why anyone would want that08:50
yeyemanI can deal with windows and even mac08:50
yeyemangnome didn't disgust me so much as I thought it would08:51
yeyemanbut kde with all it's bs effects and weirdo desktop system08:51

TheSheepyou can rant all you want, just do it on the offtopic channel, and don't swear :)08:54
yeyemanacknowledged08:57
yeyemanhi09:09
yeyemanso the pastebin thing sure did remove a lot of stuff09:09
yeyemanbut the start up animation is still there09:10
yeyemanI would love to get back the mouse and the spinning ring09:10
yeyemanit was cute09:10
yeyemanor just replace it with something else really anything09:11
yeyemanotherwise it will be like every time I start my comp there will be a reminder there09:12
yeyeman"hey remember when you installed kde and everything sucked"09:13
yeyemanhere's an ugly animated wallpaper to remind you09:13
elfyyeyeman: you actually need to go to the links that well_laid_lawn and I gave you and run the right one for your version - you also need to read what people are telling you to do09:16
elfyand just because you don't like something it doesn't suck09:16
yeyemanI did run the links you gave me09:17
elfyyou ran the pastebin example - that might not be the right one for your version09:18
yeyemanthe other one didn't work09:18
yeyemanit gave me errors about "unable to find package"09:19
elfythen that is down to you - where do you think I found that command?09:19
yeyemanbut the pastebin removed all the apps, and the option to start kde at login09:20
yeyemanhowever, the grub screen still shows "start kubuntu" and the subsequent animation I've been telling you about09:20
elfywell good luck with it - I'm off now09:21
m1chaeli have a windows 8 laptop. i tried to install xubuntu on it a few months ago. i deleted the efi partition and removed xubuntu. however, i still see xUbuntu in the bios/efi boot menu. i tried using 'bcdedit' but do not see xUbuntu in the list. I tried using xubuntu 13.04 x64 'efibootmgr' but there is a bug that does not make the changes. I don't have fast enough internet at the moment to try14:11
m1chaelxubuntu 12.04. is there a way i can do this without downloading xubuntu 12.04?14:11
bekksYou cant try out software without obtaining it first.14:12
m1chaelare you talking to me bekks?14:13
m1chaelif so, i know that. but can i do it with windows?14:14
vladim1chael: try removing Xubuntu entry with EasyBCD14:24
m1chaelthanks vladi, i'll try this! looks promising14:26
BuzzerMy xubuntu freezes on boot (splash shows briefly). The last thing I did was performing the second option in http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.org.user-groups.linux.boston.discuss/43603 . I've already deleted the config file and cleared the tmp directory from a live cd but no change. Ideas?15:14
BuzzerThe third option*15:14
xubuntu545Where could I find more information about the panel? Documentation is of no use. Whenever I start Xubuntu, I get 7 errors, displayed on my second screen, a beamer which is turned off during day. The panel icons dont accept clicks. And now, the panes has desided not to stick to the upper edge, but come down to 1/3rd of the screen, overlaying whatever I am working on.15:19
TheSheepxubuntu545: try disabling the other screen15:40
TheSheepxubuntu545: in display settings15:40
oelsenhi all. can I map names to names in resolv.conf? I can map IP to names there. I want to "alias" a domain16:07
oelsenok, I found the pdnsd manual page. somebody reading this? I don't know how to make *.X.com records into the config file (it should be possible, I think)16:32
oelsenha! I probably found a workaround :D (if someone reads this later)17:02
xubuntu906I received a notification to update my Raring base. When I attempted to I received this message:18:06
xubuntu906Ugh. Not letting me paste the message. Anyway, it's indicating that I don't have enough space on /boot. I am a followed the suggestion of trying sudo apt-get clean to no avail. I'm a Linux novice. How do I best go about making room for the update?18:09
yeyemanhey, I have a problem with the way fonts are rendered18:14
MalgorathAnyone suggest a decent laptop that isn't to expensive? I'm looking at getting something just for  xubuntu18:14
yeyemanthey look almost too sharp, or to have too much contrast18:14
elfyxubuntu906: that's the trouble with having a /boot partition - have you got synaptic installed18:14
yeyemanit's hurting my eyes a bit to look at it18:15
yeyemanwhere are some setting to play around with?18:15
elfyxubuntu906: if you haven't run this in a terminal please - you'll get a url - give us that18:16
elfydpkg -l linux-image* |pastebinit18:16
xubuntu906ok, I'll do that now18:17
elfyif you've got synaptic installed - just open that18:17
xubuntu906http://paste.ubuntu.com/6080278/18:18
elfythere's probably and easier way to do this a bunch at a time - but I'm not really here18:19
flux242yeyeman: i'd check antialiasing settings first. Appearence->Fonts->Rendering18:19
elfyxubuntu906: so in a terminal you can use apt-get to remove some of those18:19
xubuntu906are they all safe to go? Or only some of them?18:20
elfyxubuntu906: some18:20
elfyxubuntu906: remove the pairs of 19/25/2618:21
elfylike this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2150092&p=12676629&viewfull=1#post1267662918:21
elfyxubuntu906: why do you have a /boot partition ? not very useful imo unless you really need them and then you'd probably be able to deal with a full partition :)18:22
elfyxubuntu906: I like to always keep the current and previous kernels in general18:23
xubuntu906I didn't realize I had a /boot partition to be perfectly honest. It's a new (to me) laptop and I'm still getting a feel for it.18:25
elfywell - you'll need to keep an eye on that in future :)18:26
xubuntu545TheSheep: Thanks, disabling/enabling 2nd screen worked18:27
xubuntu906I will. Thanks. Just reading over the link you sent me so I can try to clear this stuff out.18:29
elfyxubuntu906: ok - the link has different kernels - but the logic is the same for your list, just don't remove them all - to be clear you'll remove 3 linux-image and 3 linux-image-extra18:31
elfyI'm off for a bit - there are others about :)18:31
xubuntu906thanks so much :)18:32

ShirakawasunaI lost my firetray systray icon for thunderbird in the process of switching from nvidia to intel graphics (which involved redoing my panel, including indicator applet). I'm not sure why. Any ideas or alternatives?20:30
ShirakawasunaI'm hoping there's a systray whitelist somewhere or something20:30
Shirakawasunaah, there's separate notification area vs. indicator applets. For some reason I thought the indicator plugin had both20:34
