peter__hi00:23
peter__i did "sudo apt-get remove -purge openjdk-7-jre" it looks up the dependencies and does everything to remove the package00:27
peter__but in the same process it ask to install openjdk-6-jre instead00:27
peter__why is that?00:27
peter__(im just trying to get rid of everything "java" to do a complete reinstall ov java)00:28
peter__-v +f00:28
peter__anyone? i find it quite puzzling that a remove command will lead to a package install00:35
peter__is this a lubuntu specific behaviour?00:35
peter__im a beginner...iam at this for 6 hours now....im quite frustrated00:36
nitushi. trying to install lubuntu 12.04 on an old inspiron 2200 -- the livecd locks up while loading. so does the installer01:00
nitusso does alternate and mini01:01
nituswhat could it be?01:01
phillwpeter__: why did you want to issue the command?01:01
peter__phillw, like i said to remove the opejkd-7-jre01:01
phillwnitus: please check that the ISO you downloaded is not corrupt and ensure the CD / DVD / USB has an uncorrupted version. The installer does work.01:02
nitusI've tried three discs and a usb install, all of which work fine on other machines01:03
peter__i had the freezing issue myself btw....using the alternate iso did it for me01:03
nituseven mini froze on me01:04
nitussomewhere it's doing something that inspiron just can't abide01:04
phillwpeter__: wht do need to remove it?01:04
phillw*why*01:04
peter__philw: because im not getting the java web starter component running. so iwas going for a complete uninstall of java....then reinstall01:06
nitusah I tried different boot methods and now lubuntu gives me the error: firmware file "b43-open/ucode5.fx" not found01:06
nitusthen download instructions, not very helpful while locked up during boot01:06
nitushmm, maybe if I just disable the wifi card in bios.01:07
peter__actually not true....java also doenst work properly on running -jar files as well01:07
phillwnitus: that may point to  PAE not being supported on that computer.01:07
nitusit isn't which is why I'm using 12.04. I recognize it as a reference to the broadcom wifi driver01:08
phillwnitus: I'm not too sure with inspirion, but https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu-fake-PAE01:09
phillwwill explain further as to which machines it can be of use on.01:09
nitusyeah thanks, not the problem here01:09
nitus12.04 doesn't require pae-enabled chip01:10
nitusI've installed it on a number if non-pae laptops so far, celeron m or pentium m01:11
phillwnitus: it was the last release from lubuntu that did not. However, it is not an LTS from lubuntu01:11
nitusno issues01:11
nitusbut the error message clearly refers to the wifi driver01:11
phillwnitus: that is a driver issue, there is little we can do if providers do not make drivers available :'(01:12
nitusyeah I didn't see that error message before checking all the "other options" options01:13
phillwnitus: the best place to head? http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=336 read the FAQ and also feel free to register and ask on that area.01:14
nitusbut is locking up the installer for no evident reason the provider's fault?01:15
nitusI know exactly where to get the drive for that card, and theinstaller is working fine with it disabled in bios for now01:15
phillwnitus: on standard installer or alternate?01:15
nitusI went back to standard since I now know the problem was just the wifi driver. with it disabled everything is working good01:16
nitusonce installed I can just install the driver and turn it back on in bios01:16
phillwnitus: lubuntu is the only flavour that supports both.  As you have a solution for your machine, please do post it up so that anyone following you can follow it.01:17
nitusI wonder why there's no error message in the other installer modes? I think it may have just been the odd color scheme when you turn on all the "other modes" . .. you know, it goes sort of light blue. the error message was a slightly different shade of blue01:19
nitusso maybe it was always there but the same color as the background, hence invisible01:20
phillwpeter__: I've not done java stuff for a couple of years now. The restricted-extras for 13.10 has been in flux, but it should be somewhat settled now.01:21
nitusphillw yeah I will do so as soon as I get everything up and running, so I can be sure to provide the correct details01:21
phillwnitus: I've been running 13.10 since alpha one, there is a bug which the boss will not fix for us updating. His time is better spent else where. I have my separate /home partition, I just need to re-install my extra apps :D01:24
peter__phillw:  im on 12.04....ok, i wasnt expecting being walked through a java install. but could you clear this up: an apt-get remove command shouldnt lead to a package being installed?01:24
nitusthis is not the first time I've had issues with the installer locking up due to device issues. I had it fail with a defective hdd, even on the livecd it would fill a page of errors trying to scan the device and then dump me in to a text prompt, um, intrarefs or whatever it's called.01:24
nitusI know it's issues lubuntu inherited from parent distros01:25
nitusbut why does livecd even care about the hdd?01:25
peter__philw:im a complete beginner but this is just completlely strange, right?01:25
phillwpeter__: if there are applications that have depends on, then yes.. it will try to re-install.  Again, please give me a few minutes to look this issue up.01:25
peter__phillw: oh, ok i didnt know that01:27
peter__thx01:27
nitusthis laptop only has a 512 stick but the installer is very laggy and choppy. maybe I should have used alternate01:28
phillwpeter__: I cannot find it immeadiately, but if you remove certain packages that *buntu needs to have (called required) then the system will try to find an alternative.01:29
phillwnitus: indeed, you should of :)01:29
nitusI gave slitaz a go when I thought lubuntu wouldn't work, but I had to conclude that it would be too difficult for my friend to use. you have to do too much manually01:30
phillwnitus: or even the minimal route01:30
nituslubuntu once I configure it is easy for any newb01:30
nitusphillw if it completes I'll be ok01:31
peter__phillw: ok, thx im happy with any answer at this point - that sounds somehow assuring!01:32
peter__;)01:32
phillwnitus: lubuntu will go pretty low on resources, if the alternate install still needs too much for web browsing, there is xombrero in the 'non-official' apps area01:32
nitusit *should do ok on 512mb, but every machine is different. always assuming it makes it through the install ;p01:34
peter__phillw: might i issue another probaly too basic beginner question, i actually have hopes it might be easy to answer01:35
nituspeter what's your issue?01:35
phillw!ask | peter__01:37
ubottupeter__: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience01:37
peter__nitus: i did use the alternate install and the debain-based-installer aks you to make an account...basically just used for an email account01:37
peter__it supposed to use your real name here.....after that it asks to make your actualy user account01:38
nitusI usuallly find irc is better as you can get details or follow up, but the forum post stays there long enough for multiple answers01:38
nituspeter a user account you mean?01:38
nitusI could be wrong but I think in OEM mode it doesn't01:39
peter__well...i know have that (outdate i assume) email account as a regular user account on the graphical login screen01:39
peter__is that normal behaviour?01:39
nitusI'm not sure what you mean by email account01:39
nitusI've used all the different installers and they just want  user account01:40
phillwnitus: yes, all installers requires a person.01:41
peter__sorry for my typos and poor english...iam at this for far too long now01:41
phillwyou have to say who the person is, so it knows where to save the data attributed01:41
phillwpeter__: get some rest, feel free to 'ping' me (just put phillw as part of a message)01:43
peter__phillw: right, it asks me to put in my name ( real name suggested because it will only be used for emails mostly it says) and then it asks me to set up the normal user account01:43
peter__BUT: now i have to user accounts on my log in screen....that email thingy and my normal user/ computer account01:43
phillwpeter__: put in what you are happy with, but do keep a record of both name and password01:44
phillw'real name' means nothing, it is trying to set up your account.01:45
nituslocked up. now I think this must be the mini install as it says "ubuntu" on the menu01:45
nitusI was looking for alternate but mini will suffice01:46
phillwnitus: I'm heading for bed (02:46 here), feel free to give me a poke later01:46
peter__phillw: is it normal that i end up with two accounts in the graphical login screen after install?01:47
nitusnot unless you create two ;p01:47
phillwpeter__: it depends if you have added lubuntu to one existing system, or have installed it from fresh. If the latter, then yes, there will be two accounts set up for you.]01:48
peter__ok, i guess ill do a reinstall and just leave this email stuff blank01:48
nitusI honestly don't know what email stuff you are talking about01:48
peter__nitus: i know, i know.....i can find it anyhwere on the help pages as well...i always end up with stuff like that01:49
peter__enough of it! thanks to both of you01:49
peter__;)01:49
phillwpeter__: you will see guest and your user name.. select your user name and enter the password. Next time you reboot, it will default to the name01:50
peter__thanks for ypur patience and good will01:50
nitusit asks for root credentials and a user afiak01:50
peter__phillw: oh well...ok, i have 3 accounts then your  right i also have a guest account...i forgot hehe01:51
peter__this is confusing.....i think ill just do a reinstall01:51
nituswhy?01:51
nituspeter__ it asks for an account name and then a username for the account, but it's the same account01:52
peter__ok01:53
peter__i hope i got it then.01:54
peter__thanks a heap....again :)01:54
nitusnp01:54
peter__im better getting off this for some sleep now ;)01:55
peter__bye bye01:55
nitusok, I don't know what I changed, but now instead of the standard list of wifi access points in range, it wants me to preconfigure for a single, specific access point07:26
nitusoh, and it seems to think it's ubuntu07:31
nitusoh, I see. the repository isn't even in synaptic08:14

ubottuA general introduction to the ways software can be installed, removed and managed in Ubuntu can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoftwareManagement - See also !Packages, !Equivalents17:19
wxlinstalling htop is useful for other things but totally unnnecessary for that one thing17:19
Unit193Of course, you can always sudo killall5.17:20
rosemballlearning your way through /proc would be the best17:21
* wxl slaps Unit193 17:21
rosemballso I installed lubuntu using abnt keyboard layout and now I am using an en_us layout19:48
rosemballis there a way to change the default layout at boot time, I don't want to have to change it by hand everytime19:48
pepeethe logout menu doesn't work in 13.10, it show an error about dbus and systemd ...19:58
rosemballgraphical error or terminal?20:02
rosemballif graphical ps it and upload to imagehoster, post link here20:02
csonAnybody happen to run lubuntu on a thinkpad x100e?  It seems 80% of the time I boot up to a frozen display.  I tried grub changes like i915.modeset=n to no avail.20:02
csonThe fact that it boots up fine the other 20% is what's weird.20:03
pepeerosemball, this is the error message:   gdbus.error:org.freedesktop.dbus.error.serviceunknown: the name org.freedesktop.systemd1 was not provided by any .service file20:08
pepeeit happens when I press the "suspend" button20:09
pepee(or whatever it's called, my language is spanish...)20:10
rosemballok I understand20:13

rosemballthanks gomiboy20:13
rosemballXKBLAYOUT="br" changing this to "en" will do the trick?20:20
gomiboyrosemball: mine is actually set to "us"20:23
rosemballok20:24
rosemballI used another way, as pointed by the manual20:24
rosemballdpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration20:24
rosemballdpkg-reconfigure console-setup20:24
rosemballthese 2 commands should do the trick20:24
rosemball*did*20:25
pepeefor anyone interested, this is the bug I have:  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfce4-session/+bug/122180920:41
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1221809 in xfce4-session (Ubuntu) "systemd-shim removal causes restart to logout" [Undecided,Confirmed]20:41
pepeesystemd-shim is missing..20:41
Unit193There's all sorts of login/out issues, all flavors.20:42
pepeeinstalling systemd-shim solved it (error message from the logout menu:  "the name org.freedesktop.systemd1 was not provided by any .service file")22:03
