darkxstjbicha, gnome-terminal update never made it into saucy?01:18
jbichadarkxst: nope, bug 1132700 is still unfixed01:40
ubot5bug 1132700 in gnome-terminal (Ubuntu) "gnome-terminal requires sourcing of vte.sh login script" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/113270001:40
jbichayeah, it's disappointing that terminal, webkit, and control-center weren't updated to 3.8, Canonical's desktop team had too many other priorities this cycle01:42
jbichadobey's thinking that the webkit bug is an upstream regression01:42
darkxstyeh he told me that too01:42
darkxstbtw its still broken in 2.1.9001:43
darkxsteven though there was one promising change in the NEWS file01:43
darkxst"Fix rendering of WebKitWebView child widgets with recent GTK+."01:44
darkxstCould well be related/similar, but I can't find the commit for that ;(01:44
jbichasvn :(01:45
jbichaor maybe it's not, but trac isn't as fun to navigate01:46
jbichaI appreciate the stability of waiting until things are bug-free to upload to Ubuntu01:48
jbicha...but on the other hand some things take forever to be fixed if we wait01:48
darkxstI guess it is this, http://trac.webkit.org/changeset/15076302:05
darkxstits more that on one seems to care about the bugs until its in the archive ;(02:09
jbichawell that refers to a gtk 3.8 commit: https://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/commit/?h=gtk-3-8&id=d22fd7202:09
jbichaI guess blogging would be a good way to attract attention to bugs that need help02:10
jbichaI almost blogged this cycle02:10
darkxstjbicha, it seems most people that read the blogs spend their time starting flamewars and trolling, rather than contributing!06:57
jbichahopefully facebook is fixed with today's telepathy-gabble update08:01
darkxstok cool08:03

Andy80hi guys14:22
Andy80I'm using Ubuntu 13.04 and I've added the Gnome3 PPA to my repos. I've installed Gnome 3 and I'm running it. Now.... I can't install ANY extensions. I've already verified all the things described here: https://extensions.gnome.org/about/ but it seems everything all right. I get the popup with Cancel/Install buttons, I click install and the popup closes and nothing happens. I also don't get any error in the .xsession-errors. Any idea?14:24
FiremanEdAndy80: Are the extensions showing in tweak tool>shell extensions?14:35
Andy80let me check...14:39
Andy80FiremanEd, I've the "Shell Extension" option in the tweak tool but I only see default extensions, not the one that I try to install14:39
FiremanEdAndy80: I'm running ubuntugnome 13.10 beta 1, and have noticed the same from the shell extensions web page.  Several attempts to install some extensions then fizzle.14:42
Andy80ufff :/14:45
bjsnideryou're able to turn those extensions on and off?14:46
bjsniderthe ones that show up in tweak?14:46
Andy80bjsnider, let me check...14:46
Andy80bjsnider, yes... just tried with Removable Drive Indicator14:47
bjsniderwhat browser did you use to install the one you're looking for?14:47
Andy80bjsnider, I've tried both with Chrome and Firefox14:51
Andy80and yes: Chrome has the extension plugin installed and enabled14:51
Andy80and Click to Play enabled14:51
bjsnideris the extension supposed to be compatible with gnome-shell 3.8?14:52
Andy80the extensions url is also whitelisted as usual14:52
FiremanEdAndy80: With a few extensions that were doing what you described, I went to their 'developer homepage' listed there and installed them manually, with some success14:52
Andy80I don't know, but the fact is that I can't install ANY extension at all14:52
Andy80I've tried many14:52
bjsniderand the only way you've tried is through the browser?14:52
Andy80bjsnider, yes... I'm trying to install this one https://github.com/brianrobles204/Music-Integration14:53
Andy80in particular14:53
Andy80but I can't find the package to install it manually14:53
Andy80let me try to compile it....14:54
bjsniderthat won't work14:54
bjsniderit's too old14:54
bjsniderit was abandoned14:54
bjsnideri mean look for yourself: https://github.com/brianrobles204/Music-Integration/issues/2714:55
Andy80uhm... but a friend of mine, with my same version, just installed it and it works for him14:55
bjsniderthe api is broken in between minor revisions, and the extension has to be updated to reflect that, so the developer should not have written that it's compatible with "3.2 and above"14:55
bjsnider"up to 3.2" is correct14:57
Andy80ah ok... infact it doesn't compile either....15:02
Andy80that's a shame... I just migrated from Unity and it would have been nice to have a Sound Menu like Unity one15:02
bjsniderso you're saying when you try to install an extension from the site, it just disappears without offering a reason for the failure?15:03
Andy80exactly15:07
Andy80same with Weather one for example15:07
Andy80let me try again just to be sure...15:07
FiremanEdAndy80: gnome 3.6 or 3.815:07
Andy80I confirm.... Gnome 3.815:08
bjsniderthe latest neroth extension for weather based on gweather works15:08
bjsnidercode is only a few weeks old15:08
FiremanEdok. The weather ext. I did manually and then it worked15:08
bjsnideryou have to install the typelib gweather package15:09
u-k-i-tThe weather extension if system installed on 13.10 does work but it drops and changes weather location a alot. Maybe young code, but looks promising if it can be made stable for chosen location/weather sources.15:12
bjsniderworks perfectly here15:12
bjsnideron raring15:12
u-k-i-tbjsnider: It changed me from chosen to Boston once. Dropped the location a couple of times and likes to offer then not offer a weather location at times. It's fun. :-) May look at it more at a later date.15:13
FiremanEdu-k-i-t: curious, using it on 13.10 as well, but not with your symptoms.15:15
u-k-i-tFiremanEd: May look at it sooner than later. I am UK so us and the weather never have a good relationship. :-)15:16
FiremanEdu-k-i-t: ahh!15:17
bjsnideryeah but if not for that strand of the gulf stream the uk would be a lot colder15:18
Andy80u-k-i-t, same here :D15:18
u-k-i-tbjsnider: True enough.15:18
u-k-i-tCan anyone confirm this. bug 1223462.15:21
ubot5bug 1223462 in fonts-cantarell (Ubuntu) "ubuntu gnome 13.10 - Default font 'Cantarell' - Bad '9'" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/122346215:21
u-k-i-tShould also add '6' to that bug later.15:22
Andy80do you think the solution given here could work http://askubuntu.com/questions/142054/why-does-installing-gnome-shell-extensions-from-extensions-gnome-org-fail-silent ?15:23
jbichau-k-i-t: try 0.0.14-1 from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fonts-cantarell15:24
bjsniderAndy80, what's ls -l on .local/gnome-shell/extensions15:25
u-k-i-tjbicha: Currently running it.15:25
Andy80bjsnider, andrea@andrea-ThinkPad:~$ ls -l ~/.local/gnome-shell/extensions15:26
Andy80ls: cannot access /home/andrea/.local/gnome-shell/extensions: No such file or directory15:26
jbichau-k-i-t: oh I see, could you report that at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=cantarell-fonts too then?15:27
u-k-i-tjbicha: Will do.15:27
bjsniderAndy80, .local/gnome-shell/share/extensions15:28
bjsniderno, .local/share/gnome-shell/extensions15:28
Andy80bjsnider, andrea@andrea-ThinkPad:~$ ls -l ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions15:28
Andy80total 015:28
Andy80and it's normal... all the extensions installed are system wide installed because are the default one15:29
bjsniderls -ld15:29
bjsniderit should be 755 and you own it15:30
bjsniderok, jasper says the extensions site has a bug that prevents it from reporting errors at the moment. that's why you didn't see any info and it just died15:32
FiremanEdbjsnider:thanks.15:33
Andy80yeah it is:15:36
Andy80andrea@andrea-ThinkPad:~$ ls -ld ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions15:36
Andy80drwxrwxr-x 2 andrea andrea 4096 Sep 11 16:07 /home/andrea/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions15:36
u-k-i-tjbicha: Filed upstream and linked to each other.15:36
jbichau-k-i-t: thanks!15:37
bjsnider775, but anyway there's no issue creating anything under that15:37
u-k-i-tWhile I have you here. ;-) bug 1218351 Any opinions on it and how to address it locally or upstream?15:40
ubot5bug 1218351 in gedit (Ubuntu) "ubuntu gnome - gedit - 80 char line end marker hardly visible" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/121835115:40
jbichau-k-i-t: file that one to gnome too as Ubuntu GNOME just uses the default GNOME theme15:45
u-k-i-tjbicha: Will do.15:45
Andy80uff,,, I also receive double notifications when I get a message from Empathy... the first one is the nice GNOME one... thet pop up from the bottom, then I also get another one as dialog window. How can I avoid the second one?15:45
u-k-i-tRight. Now we just have the issue of not being able to boot any 13.10 iso images. But that's a kernel / main project problem.15:56
qubit01I love ubuntu-gnome, you guys rock15:59
Andy80it looks like that enabling the staging repository I'm able to install some extensions16:13
Andy80this one for exapmple https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/55/media-player-indicator/16:13
Andy80while the Weather one is still not working16:17
FiremanEdAndy80: Those two work for me in 13.10 but only have the 'gnome3 team' enabled.16:22
Andy80with a bit of efforts but it's getting better :)16:25
FiremanEdgood deal16:26
Andy80I hope the version available with Saucy will be a bit more stable ;)16:26
jbichaAndy80: if you're using the gnome3 ppa, try sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-extension-weather16:27
Andy80yes just got it... I was also missing another little lib. Up and running right now :)16:30
Andy80jbicha, this one works for you https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/150/message-notifier/ ?16:35
u-k-i-tlol. Some people who hang around the gnome bugzilla should really not think that the Linus Torvalds charm school way of talking to folks is the right way. :-D16:57
Andy80he's "just" a little emothive, but he's not a bad guy :D16:59
Andy80emotive16:59
u-k-i-tI know, but folks should not think that is always the way and try emulate. All good fun.17:01
Andy80yep... I agree that there could be people who try to emulate him17:03
Andy80got to go now, see you later and thanks for the help before!17:03
u-k-i-tAre there plans to use the next vUDS for ubuntu-gnome with a session or two as the next release will be the first ubuntu-gnome LTS?17:04
jbichawe don't have enough developers to support an LTS17:07
u-k-i-tThat is a shame. Are there any group plans for recruitment of volunteers etc. and build the structure required?17:08
jbichawe need people to package sru's and test them17:09
jbichafor instance, this update needs to be verified: bug 106458417:10
ubot5bug 1064584 in gnome-shell (Ubuntu Raring) "Locked gnome session unlocks without password authentication" [Medium,Fix committed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/106458417:10
u-k-i-tCould SRU requests go to the mailing list so more can see and maybe get involved?17:12
jbichasure, someone could do that17:15
jbichahonestly though, I think we're pretty set about UG 14.04 not being an LTS17:15
jbichathat doesn't stop any one from releasing bugfix updates for 14.04 as long as the regular Ubuntu is supported17:16
u-k-i-tTrue enough.17:16
jbichawe just don't have the resources to be making a 5-year promise or even a 3-year promise17:16
u-k-i-tHopefully that changes as popularity grows.17:17
jbichaexcept that the GNOME project generally isn't interested in supporting any thing except for the most recent stable gnome series17:17
u-k-i-tYes, that is an issue. For widespread adoption that should change. Maybe ubuntu gnome could link with Red Hat / Fedora / CentOS in some way as they have a stronger gnome support network. Just a thought.17:19
jbichait sounds like RHEL7 will be using GNOME 3.8; do you think we should stick with 3.8 next cycle too?17:20
u-k-i-tWould have to give that some consideration. Many would like to jump to latest and some may like the stability. That is a discussion for another day on the mailing list.17:21
u-k-i-tTime to go and hunt some food. Bye all.17:23
theendusero/18:29
theenduserSo I usually disable GS animations but afer the last updates the settings won't stick. After log-out and -in they're back. Any thoughts?18:30
theenduserThe extension doesn't install either BTW..18:30
theenduserthis is saucy18:31
stijn_not sure if anyone replied to theenduser's question? sorry I logged out19:14
okinMokinhi. whatever I put under  settings->keyboard->system->'show the activities overview' the windows key (or super_L) is never deactivated. how can I achieve this?21:01
okinMokinthat is gnome-shell 3.6.3.121:25
bjsniderthat's not the latest21:56
okinMokin@bjsnider: talking to me? well, it's ubuntu 13.04 standard. you suggesting that it's kind of a bug?22:01
meetingologyokinMokin: Error: "bjsnider:" is not a valid command.22:01
okinMokinbjsnider: talking to me? well, it's ubuntu 13.04 standard. you suggesting that it's kind of a bug?22:01
darkxstokinMokin, the <super> key is hardcoded I believe22:07
okinMokindarkxst: wow, that sucks22:07
darkxstokinMokin, obviously you can change/set <super>+key shortcuts, but just not <super> by itself22:08
darkxstif you wanted to do that, you probably need to use xmodmap or similar22:09
okinMokinyeah, i found that out as well. but that is exactly what is bugging me: whenever i accidently press super the whole 3d-graphic eye candy gets going22:10
bjsniderokinMokin, do you accidentally press it a lot?22:19
okinMokinbjsnider: too much to ignore it22:20
okinMokinand sometimes (i think especially the first time after booting) it takes a looong time during which the system is irresponsive22:20
bjsnidertakes a long time to get to overview?22:28
okinMokinwell yeah, it can be a couple of seconds (maybe even ten). maybe it's a different reason, though.22:30
darkxstokinMokin, the first time you press it, it has to build a lot of caches22:31
okinMokini understand that22:31
okinMokinbut even later on. you type something, press it without wanting and keep typing in that field up there in the overview. pretty annoyinh22:31
bjsnideri dunno, first time i press it, it jumps up fast, but i have a fast system22:40
okinMokinbjsnider: to be honest, so do i, but i do have other issues with my graphics driver too (i'm on a shiny macbookproretina).22:43
darkxstbjsnider, it has been improved somewhat since 3.622:43
coolspothi22:44
