xubuntu254Howdy! New user. Is there a way to get my xfce machine to show up on the networking list on my windows 7 tower?02:28
puffxubuntu254: I have no clue how the networking list on windows 7 works... maybe it's a samba thing?02:34
xubuntu254samba? I'll lookthat up, thanks!02:35
XRS1you need to edit /etc/samba/smb.conf so your machine is in the right workgroup02:37
XRS1find out what workgroup your windows machine are on and add it to /etc/samba/smb.conf02:38

xubuntu345I am running Xubuntu 13.04 64 bit, kernel 3.8... I got everything working except de wireless card! I am on a Asus U32U laptop, and the wireless card for this model is a Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter!03:01
xubuntu345If I press fn + F2 (in this model is how I turned on and off the wireless card using Windows), instead of turn on or off the wireless, in turns on or off the bleutooth...03:05
xubuntu345When I go to addicional drivers only my graffic card is listed...03:06
xubuntu345And anothe detail, when I resume from suspend, the list of wireless networks is avaiable and I can connect... But when I reboot, the problem goes back again...03:09
xubuntu345What can I do to solve this problem?03:09
pleia2I haven't seen this issue, sorry, hopefully someone else will come along :)03:10

haider254Hi folks! anyone willing to lend a helping hand?13:27
baizon!ask | haider25413:28
ubottuhaider254: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience13:28
haider254Alrighty then!  I have the following issue. I have mounted a 500gb usb drive to the location /home/user/USB . Under this location I have several directories to organise my media. I have recently noticed that for some reason the data isn't being saved on the USB drive but instead on the internal HD. I have verified this by running df -h which shows that the USB drive is practically empty even though there should be gigs worth of dat13:31
GridCubehaider254, are you shure that the drive is mounted where you think it is?13:32
GridCubeyou might have been copying to a directory that its not the actual mount point but just before13:33
haider254This is the output from df -h regarding the drive /dev/sdc1             459G   70M  435G   1% /home/user/USB13:33
GridCubemmmhm13:33
haider254This is an example of a download directory from my download manager /home/user/USB/TV/13:35
haider254well looks like this discussion already helped a bunch. Looks like the drive wasn't correctly mounted for some reason and like you said the data was in the internal drive. Will correct the situation by changing the drives mount point and transferring the data to the USB drive. Thanks a bunch for all the help!13:39
antithesishi13:42
antithesisI just installed xubuntu with the same home partition as before, and now xfce won't run under my user13:43

xubuntu776Hi all!16:12
tenguixhey guys. anybody know where I'd find [a] source for panel plugins and [b] legible .ui (or similar) files for the xfce metapackage17:11
jonhighley9000anybody know of a site where a newbie (such as myself) can get detailed instructions on setting up transmission?17:51
qwebirc29536jonhighley9000: Transmission is already very simple. You don't need to set many things to it17:52
jonhighley9000ok.17:53
Poisoned_Dragontransmission works out of the box17:53
Poisoned_DragonThe only thing you would want to configure is the ip filter section.17:53
jonhighley9000would that require a server? if so, i have none.17:54
Poisoned_Dragonno17:54
Poisoned_Dragonjust a link to a ip list.17:55
jonhighley9000Poisoned_Dragon: thank you.17:55
jonhighley9000Poisoned_Dragon: would i just need to put in my internal ip (192.168.x.x) for that?17:57
Poisoned_Dragonno17:57
jonhighley9000Poisoned_Dragon: or external ip?17:57
Poisoned_Dragonjonhighley9000, just fire up terminal, go into preferences, click the privacy tab and entre a url that has a list of IP addys you wish to ban.17:59
Poisoned_Dragonthen click the update button.17:59
Poisoned_DragonI'll give you a good example list url...17:59
Poisoned_Dragonjonhighley9000, http://list.iblocklist.com/?list=bt_level1&fileformat=p2p&archiveformat=gz18:00
Poisoned_Dragonthat url will block ip addys that hate p2p.18:00
jonhighley9000Poisoned_Dragon: sorry for the "twenty questions" just trying to get a handle on this that's all. btw, thank you for your patience. :)18:00

sush24Hi, I'm a bit new to xubuntu.. When I open something on appfinder, it launches a new instance of the app. Can I customize it such that it opens an existing instance if present?18:07
GridCubethat depends on the program18:08
sush24hmm18:09
sush24i think atleast for settings, the existing instance should be opened18:09
Poisoned_Dragonsome programs don't have an option to restrict to only one instance18:11
Poisoned_Dragonif you want the current instance instead, just alt+tab to it18:11
nice-coderWhy doesn't 12.04.3 Xubuntu ISO default to newer kernel as mentioned here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack ?18:22
GridCube¿?18:23
GridCubenice-coder, as i understand it xubuntu's kernel for 12.04 still supports PAE, im not sure where this other kernels stand in this issue18:25

Soren_Hi everyone! :)20:14
Soren_Im thinking about installing xubuntu again. But the last time i did it, i got a completely black screen on boot. I think it was because i have ati graphic card or something.20:15
Soren_Do you guys have an page where i can find the most common issues?20:15
Soren_I really cant find anything about it20:15
Janeks991____my usb ports aren't working20:15
Soren_wow, thats not good :p20:16
Janeks991____+ I feel like somebody has been doing something with this pc20:16
Janeks991____like configuration or something20:18
knomeJaneks991____, for starters, could you remove your other clones from the channel. you seem to have five clients joining.20:18
Janeks991____lol really20:18
Janeks991____?20:18
Soren_rofl20:18
Janeks991____thats like news to me20:18
Janeks991____this is some malicious xubuntu I'm using20:19
knomeJaneks991____, i would doubt that, but can you first remove those clones. tell us if you need assistance with that.20:19
Janeks991____really something is wrong with this pc20:19
knomeJaneks991____, "something is wrong" or "it's not working" are not useful for debugging; can you try to be a bit more elaborate on that?20:20
Soren_Would you guys recommend installing xubuntu from windows? Or should i do it from usb?20:20
Janeks991____well I can't reinstall it20:21
knomeSoren_, do it from USB; if you are referring to Wubi, that shouldn't be enabled for later versions of xubuntu, and it's not a clean installation anyway; with wubi, xubuntu is installed inside windows20:21
elfySoren_: I'd recommend from usb20:21
Soren_Okay. Great, maybe that was the issue last time then.20:22
Soren_and yes, it was wubi i was thinking about :)20:22
knomeJaneks991____, is there an error message? what's the error message if there is one? if there is no error message, what happens?20:22
Soren_how about dualboot? Do you recommend grub or what?20:23
Soren_I need windows for some applications i use20:23
knomeSoren_, grub should do the trick20:23
knomeSoren_, be sure to check the dualboot instructions out first:20:23
knome!dualboot | Soren_20:23

Soren_Okay, is that automatic when installing xubuntu or do i need to do something specific?20:23
Soren_ah great.20:24
knomethat should be pretty much automatic as long as you select the right things20:24
Soren_Anything you would recommend me before i install it?20:24
knometry to run xubuntu in a live mode, eg. boot the USB stick and select "try xubuntu" to check if everything works20:24
knomeand, naturally; back up any important data20:25
Soren_Yeah ofc. Everything is backed up to my nas20:26
knomeyep. you should be good to go then. good luck :)20:26
Soren_Im not used to desktop linux at all. I use linux on my server and alittle on my laptop20:27
knomelaptop/desktop experience is basically the same20:27
Soren_but ive not used desktop linux very mutch :/20:27
Soren_Okay. I just remembered that i had some issues with xubuntu last time i installed it on this computer. But im not 100% sure what the issue was20:28
knomethe only difference is the hardware really, and if it works, then great :)20:28
knomewell if you still have it, join the channel again and we can try to debug it20:28
knomeif it's a bug, we'll get that filed and it'll eventually (hopefully sooner than later) be fixed20:28
Soren_Yes.20:28
knomethings with proprietary drivers are a bit complicated, but let's hope it's not about those20:28
Soren_I remember that this was a known issue for like an year ago20:28
Soren_so hopefully its fixed now20:29
Soren_It was something with the drivers, i remember that20:29
Soren_I got black screen or something like that.20:29
knomeif it was with the open source drivers, the proprietary drivers might be able to fix that20:30
knomeif it was with the proprietary drivers, the open source drivers might be able to fix that20:30
Soren_Yeah it was something like that.20:30
knomeor later versions of the same drivers.20:30
knomeif it's a year, there has been some progress on both, so it's possible that it is fixed and you won't hit it again20:30
Soren_Sounds really great20:31
Soren_I dont remember if i used wubi or not tho20:31
Soren_Hmm, maybe i shoud login to irc on my ipad meanwhile :p20:31
knomethat's a good solution as well20:31
