JoeGibkenAny help?04:00
XRS1whats the issue?04:18
JoeGibkenXRS1: JoeGibken> Hi! I've been trying to install Ubuntu Studio into the laptop of my fiance, but I'm wondering why it does not detect Wifi nor LAN cable. My fiance's laptop is Lenovo G480 - http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/essential/g-series/g480/index.html#techspecs04:27
JoeGibkenBasically, I'm trying to install UbuntuStudio04:28
JoeGibkenBut after I gparted the partitions04:28
JoeGibkenThere is no internet04:28
JoeGibkenI tried attaching cable internet04:28
JoeGibkenBut it does not detect04:28
JoeGibkenNot this computer I'm responding but my fiance's LENOVO G48004:28
JoeGibkenI checked it's a Broadcom problem04:29
JoeGibkenBut I have no idea why that I use LAN internet, it still does not get any internet04:29
JoeGibkenSo I can't really install it fully without recent updates04:29
JoeGibkenI'm just assuming Ubuntu Studio has a different kernel?04:29
XRS1yes it uses a low latency kernel but that it's self shouldnt be affecting compatability05:41
XRS1lspci will show you what chipset the lan is using06:09
XRS1you can also ask in #xubuntu06:10

joheyIf my kernel hangs at boot when using lowlatency, how can I start tracking the problem down? Using Ubuntu 13.04 with official lowlatency kernel package.09:38
joheyIf started without quiet and splash kernel parameters, it just says "Loading Linux 3.8.0-31-lowlatency ..." then hangs at the purple screen.09:39
joheyYou can see a cursor or underscore at the line below, but it won't react on any keypress.09:39
joheyUsing a ThinkPad X1 Carbon, amd64 kernel.09:39
juan_hi! :)10:05
juan_could somebody help me?10:06
juan_I have connected: Bus 003 Device 007: ID 0d8c:000e C-Media Electronics, Inc. Audio Adapter (Planet UP-100, Genius G-Talk)10:07
juan_if I type dmesg is properly connected and loaded (I think)10:08
juan_the problem is10:10
juan_if I connect the guitar to my computer mic in, rakarrack get the guitar10:10
juan_but if I connect the guitar to the device previously mentioned, rakarrack does not get the guitar10:11
=== HisaoNakai_ is now known as HisaoNakai
XRS1you can alwso ask in #opensourcemusicians10:42
juan_thanks XRS1 :)10:43
joheyjuan_: I am not an expert in the area, but rakarrack is connected to jack, isn't it? If so, have you patched it correctly in qjackctl?10:44
joheyjuan_: If not using jack, please take a look at sound device control. Right click on the volume applet and select Sound Settings, then in the Applications tab you should be able to select which sound interface to use for rakarrack.10:46
juan_you mean I should config rakarrak well, is not it?10:47
juan_as far as I know, yeah, rakarrak is connected to qjack10:47
joheyjuan_: But as I said, I'm no expert. This is just based on general knowledge of how things use to be. :)10:48
juan_thanks10:48
joheyjuan_: Ok, jack. Do you use qjackctl to configure jack?10:48
juan_now I am setting up my USB sound card as a default card10:48
juan_yes, I do10:49
juan_but I do not know how to choose the sound card10:49
joheyjuan_: In qjackctl you click Setup, then under Settings tab you set the USB card in the Interface.10:50
johey(The little > arrow to the right of the dropdown box is more verbosal than the dropdown box itself)10:50
joheyThen click Ok and click the start button in the main window to start the jack daemon with this configuration.10:51
joheyAfter that, ensure rakarrack is connected to jack. You might need to restart it.10:52
juan_yes, it is10:52
juan_when I plug the guitar to the computer in, it works10:53
juan_my problem is that It does not work with my usb sound card10:53
joheyAre you sure rakarrack is using jack?10:53
juan_yes i do10:54
juan_yes I am10:54
joheyIn qjackctl, please click Connect.10:54
juan_yeah, I should restart10:54
juan_then I wil do :)10:54
juan_see you later10:54
juan_and many thnks10:54
joheyI think you are not many clicks away from success. :)10:54
juan_I am here again johey :)10:58
joheyI think you are not many clicks away from success. :)10:59
juan_I do no think so10:59
juan_OSS4 error: The device file is missing from /dev. Perhaps you have not installed and started Open Sound System yet.10:59
joheySays who?11:00
joheyRakarrack?11:00
joheyThen it sounds like it is trying to use OSS instead of jack.11:00
juan_I have opened qjackctl (but is not started)11:02
juan_and I get this error when I tried to play a sond11:02
juan_song11:02
joheyWith what application?11:02
joheyThis has nothing to do with the rakarrack issue, right?11:03
joheyEither you have to install OSS4 libs (I know nothing about it) or if possible, configure the player to use ALSA, pulseaudio (which might not be installed in ubuntustudio?) or jack.11:04
juan_the application is audacious11:06
joheyThe fanstastic world of GNU/Linux offers you countless number of audio servers, neither compatible with another. :)11:06
juan_ok11:08
juan_I removed pulseaudio11:08
juan_because I had a lot of servers11:08
juan_but I am going to install it again11:09
joheyMaybe you should leave it uninstalled if you use your machine for recording... There might be issues.11:09
joheyI don't know. I have mixed feelings over pulseaudio.11:09
joheyIt is good at mixing different audio sources for normal use, but in the past I had issues when using it together with jack. Maybe those things have been resorted.11:11
juan_yeah, me too11:12
juan_it is easy for sound configuration11:12
juan_but a lot of problems too11:12
joheyBut if you uninstall pulseaudio, you might need to configure your audio applications.11:13
juan_maybe it does not work because it11:15
juan_because I uninstalled pulseaudio11:15
juan_I do not know11:15
juan_I leave it11:15
juan_I will try to keep the system with the same configuration11:15
juan_I do not want to miss the audio11:16
juan_but I would like to have audio in my computer and no problems when I connect the guitar11:16
juan_but I am too noob11:16
joheyWhen it comes to the guitar, it is likely just about patching it right with jack.11:17
joheyBut what is interesting is that it works with the internal interface despite the fact that you set up jack using the usb card.11:18
joheyEither rakarrack is configured not to use jack or jack is wrongly setup.11:18
joheyOmg. Here I'm sitting trying to tell you what to do, and I'm not even able to get my things working. Why you even listen to me? :P11:20
juan_I agree with the things that you say11:33
juan_the main problem was jack, that it does not get my usb sound card11:34
juan_now I am trying to recover the computer audio because I lost it11:34
juan_I must reboot11:34
juan_hi again11:44
juan_I have solved my sound problem11:44
juan_but now I have another question11:44
juan_I have just found a Sony Sing Star adapter11:44
juan_the computer recognizes it well11:45
juan_but I do not know if I could improve the quality11:45
juan_what do you think?11:45
joheyWhat is a Sony Sing Star adapter?11:45
juan_the adapter to Play Station Sing Star11:48
joheyIs it a USB sound interface?11:49
joheyI don't think I can help anyway. If the quality cannot be improved by setting parameters in qjackctl I don't think you can do much.11:50
joheyI guess the Sing Star hardware is just there to analyze the voice pitch, so the quality doesn't need to be that great.11:51
__ravenhi17:18
__ravenhi17:19
__ravenid like to change from cubase to ardour3 and need a list of instrument plugins running with that to substitute a lot of vst instrument plugins - any ideas? what do you use?17:21
holstein__raven: i would try and not think of it as a substitue17:23
holstein__raven: i dont mean to be "abrasive" or rude, but the fact is, ardour and linux and JACK are all open17:23
holstein*anyone*.. any vendor can and is encouraged to create whatever they want for the platform17:24
holsteinthe *exact* software you are talking about can be release for ardour17:24
holsteinthere are *many* options already available.. but, as far as you saying "i use x vst in cubase, what can i use in ardour".. the issue is, i dont use cubase anymore, and im not given access to the information about the instrumens you are looking for17:25
holsteini would try and think about when you started using cubase17:25
holsteinyou didnt have *any* preconcieved ideas or software or work flows. you just have a task, and you learn to do it17:26
holsteinyou can try visiting #opensourcemusicians and see what is being used.. otherwise, i would try asking specifically for what you are looking for.. "i need to do x, how do you do that in ubuntustudio".. for example17:27
holstein__raven: also, imagine having this coverstation with a person at apple or microsoft.. calling up MS support and saying "im using a DAW.. what vst's are available for it?"17:29
holsteinthey would have no way of getting to all of that information, and that is a proprietary model where folks are paid to culminate such data..17:30
holsteinwith open software, things come and go so much, and no commercial entity is really in charge of making sure information is release about the options17:30
holsteinand, replacing or emulating other software may not be the goal of the projects anyway17:31
holsteinthis is my friends page, [lsd], from #opensourcemusicians.. http://wootangent.net/category/linux/ ..he is my go to midi guy17:31
