arthurfiggishello :) just as a general question, regarding steam for linux...how have people running kubuntu found it in general with regards to the games functioning well? i'm debating installing it and buying a few games, but if they only work well in ubuntu proper...well, let's just say I don't like unity much...or the dash lens, xmir, and a laundry list of other odd decisions :(02:13
skreech_I wouldn't think that there was a difference in KDE03:29

Now i tried to install the win 7 but i get the error that says windows failed to start.a recent hardware or software channge might be the cause.05:59

exosusyeah, it's working. I was asking because it was taking so long only  just to prepare before resizing13:59
BluesKajexosus:  if the resize is large then it has to move a lot of data, then it can take hours14:12
ablyssexosus, don't worry, my upgrade is taking pretty long too14:39

TheLordOfTimerodnice, hiya19:21
TheLordOfTimerodnice, the way to check the answer to your question is to check the wine compatibility DB19:21
TheLordOfTime!wine19:21
ubottuWINE is a compatibility layer for running Windows programs on GNU/Linux - More information: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wine - Search the !AppDB for application compatibility ratings - Join #winehq for application help - See !virtualizers for running Windows (or another OS) inside Ubuntu19:21
TheLordOfTime!appdb19:21
ubottuThe Wine Application DB is a database of applications and help for !Windows programs that run under !WINE: http://appdb.winehq.org - Join #winehq for application help19:21
TheLordOfTimerodnice, and then look up iTunes under the appdb link there19:22
TheLordOfTimefrom my experience, you can get iTunes to sorta work, but it can't be used for syncing iphones and such reliably under Linux19:22
rodnicehey\sorry19:24
rodnice(just a second)19:24
rodnicethanks TL19:24
rodniceman, no iTunes for Linux? I don't really care but all these Apple addicts I have as friends... I'm trying to sell them on Linux19:25
TheLordOfTimerodnice, Apple doesn't like Linux :P19:26
TheLordOfTimeit's apple's fault.19:26
rodniceAhhh! I thought so!19:26
TheLordOfTimethat's basically the only reason I keep Windows around - iTUnes + games.19:26
rodniceO/S wars!19:26
TheLordOfTimerodnice, you'd need to figure out Wine (windows application) compatibility19:26
TheLordOfTimeand i know for a fact iTunes in Wine doesn't behave well with iOS devices19:27
TheLordOfTimesync doesn't work very well19:27
rodniceok, Wine compatibility list at WineHQ19:27
rodnicegotcha19:27
TheLordOfTimerodnice, http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=1347  <--19:27
TheLordOfTimejust go there19:27
rodniceI refuse to ever own an apple device, so I'm ignorant of all that19:27
TheLordOfTimelooks like 11.0.4 has meh results19:28
TheLordOfTimewell, gold results on certain versions of Wine19:28
TheLordOfTimebut, AFAICT, it's got mostly garbage or bronze ratings19:28
TheLordOfTimewhich don't make it look all that well supported19:28
TheLordOfTimei'd have to dig around in the specific test cases posted, and I"m too lazy/busy to do that today19:29
rodnicelol man thank you so much though for helping me out19:31
rodniceI'm reading up on it now19:31
rodniceso where is everyone else?  I'm not sure if I'm even doing this IRC thing properly19:32
DaskreechTheLordOfTime: Why do you have Itunes?19:36
TheLordOfTimeDaskreech, because my phone is an iPhone19:36
TheLordOfTimeso OS updates requires iTunes19:36
TheLordOfTimeDaskreech, but i also have a requirement for Visio for stuff which necessitates Windows so...19:37
TheLordOfTimeit's more of a side effect of needing things that only work on Windows19:37
TheLordOfTime(dual boot!)19:37
Daskreech:-)19:38
DaskreechThey still require ITunes to interfacewith an IOS device?19:38
rodnicei don't have an iPhone myself, but I want to be able to be a resource to friends and family19:39
DaskreechI doubt that iTunes would ever be a good fit on Linux19:41
rodniceawww19:41
rodniceOK19:41
DaskreechIt's a Unix Program written to be out of sync in  UNIX land ported to Windows and translated to Linux which is also breaking UNIX conventions and going in the opposite direction of Apple19:42
DaskreechBut I honestly find people steeped in Apple without knowledge to be on the far end of the spectrum of people  opposite of those who enjoy Linux19:43
rodniceYes, I'm somewhat of an inbetweener... never understood an MP3 player that costs more than $40, yet not smart enough to be good on Linux19:45
rodniceI plan on committing myself to Linux for the next 12 months19:45
DaskreechI don't think at this point you need to be smart to be on linux19:45
DaskreechTo (ab)use it well yes :)19:46
Daskreechbut My mom used Linux for a few months and she's not used computers before19:46
rodnicelol19:47
Daskreechrodnice: How long have you been using Linux?19:49
rodniceUm, since 2 weeks ago19:51
rodniceand I have my fairly computer illiterate friend converted too lol19:51
rodnicebut like I suspected, he's doing as good as me since I need to unlearn Windows19:51
rodniceI'm on Kubuntu 13 x32 and I gave him Mint 15 x3219:52
rodnice"Could not connect to the iTunes store" ... yeah, my attempt just bombed19:52
DaskreechYeah It does some strange things :)19:57
rodnicegrr... I think lol19:57
Daskreech I'd say in another 3 weeks You'll know if you want to stick around19:57
rodnicePhilosophically, I want to stick with Linux19:58
DaskreechBut Kubuntu is pretty neat :)19:58
DaskreechDrink deep or not at all :)19:58
rodniceyeah, I'm ready19:59
Daskreechwhat's the philosophy? ?19:59
rodniceLess pirated software I would need to function19:59
rodnicenice little cool educational programs20:00
rodniceand I wanna be a computer nerd!20:00
DaskreechThat will work :)20:00
rodniceI wanna be good like the command-line addicts20:00
=== BTCOxygen|1 is now known as BTCOxygen
lordievaderWhoo command-line addicts, now that's a good addiction :)20:01
Daskreechrodnice: I'd say keep one open so you can play with it and you can read up on !bash20:01
Daskreech!bash20:01
ubottuThe linux terminal or command-line interface is very powerful. Open a terminal via Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal (Gnome), K-menu -> System -> Konsole (KDE), or Menu -> Accessories -> LXTerminal (LXDE). Guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal20:01
rodniceOK, noob question, what should I use the command line for normally?20:02
rodniceI'm not a server admin (yet)20:02
=== richard is now known as Guest88728
rodniceI need some sort of mental work flow for using the command line20:04
lordievaderrodnice: The fun thing about linux is that the command line can replace the entire desktop. Imagine doing (most) of the things you do on a desktop in the terminal :)20:04
lordievaderMost cases this isn't very practical though...20:05
rodniceIt sounds amazing, I just want to make it a reality20:05
lordievaderrodnice: Read a lot about the terminal (this includes man-pages) and try stuff out (perhaps in a vm).20:06
rodniceyeah, I'm about to make use of several library books.  I managed to get through a 300 page  Ubuntu book last week20:10
rodniceI wrote down all the commands in there (only located in the last chapter).20:10
rodnicebut it's like, now what?20:11
rodnicemake directories all day long?20:12
rodnicemkdir -now--thendelete20:12
lordievaderrodnice: Learn new commands, make bash-scripts with those commands, explore, experiment :)20:14
rodniceahhh bash scripts... is that like a file that runs all of my codes all at once?20:14
rodniceI apologize for my basic questions20:17
lordievaderrodnice: A bash script contains lines of commands, when run the bash interpreter serially goes over each line and runs the command.20:19
rodniceoh sweet! I've been trying to do something like that with these 9 lines of code I keep using20:20
rodniceI'll research that20:22
lordievaderrodnice: For example this: http://paste.ubuntu.com/6172879/ A script to either load or set the gamma of a monitor.20:22
rodnicewhoa... OK, I'm understanding. how do you run it? Go to console and  just say run foo?20:24
rodnicekonsole*20:24
rodnicedumb question20:25
rodniceforget I asked that lol... just type the file name, correct?20:25
lordievaderrodnice: If it has execution rights you can just call it with ./<name-of-script> (assuming here you are in the same folder as the script).20:26
rodniceof course... thanks man20:30
rodnicehm... so I can burn a CD with command line?20:30
rodnicea/s/l? (do we still say that in chat?)20:32
lordievaderrodnice: You can probably burn a cd, yes. a/s/l?? Not something I'm familiar with.20:33
rodniceoh lol sorry age/gender/location20:33
lordievaderrodnice: Ah you are one of those. You know what I say to people who ask those kind of things? Stick around long enough and you'll find out ;)20:35
rodniceoh ok, lol I didn't really care but my friend was amazed that I'm talking with someone (he's newish to the computer world).20:36
rodnicewhere is everyone else?20:36
