charl_*oktoberfest12:05
psychicistI‌ was in nuremberg for one week in 2004, but I‌ would like to visit that city and munich when I get time12:05
psychicistah, I‌ see12:05
charl_if you want to visit munich you should visit at a different time though12:06
charl_all the hotels are booked out during oktoberfest12:06
charl_i have never seen such a lot of crazy in my life i think :)12:07

psychicist:D12:10
psychicistfor how long were you there?12:11
charl_only for the day, due to the hotels issue :P12:11
charl_i came with the sleeper (train) during the night and left the same way12:12
psychicistoh12:32
psychicistwow12:32
psychicistso you are really a party animal :D12:32
=== psychici1t is now known as psychicist
charl_psychicist: not at all, but as they say, you only live once :P12:47
psychicistcharl_: that's the spirit :D12:50
psychicistcharl_, but were you alone or with someone else?12:50
psychicistms or mrs charl_?12:50
psychicist:D12:50
charl_lol no unfortunately not i'm still single :(12:55
charl_if i go again though i would definitely want to go together with a larger group and reserve a table12:55
charl_it helps to keep the crazy at bay a little12:55
charl_most of the tables in the hackertent were in any case reserve only, i sat in the unreserved bit12:55
psychicistyeah12:55
charl_i'm not sure about the top part, i never went up top12:55
charl_but the entire middle section of the hackertent was reserved12:56
psychicistbtw, if you ever manage to come to poland or want to go to ukraine or any of these eastern european countries, just tell me12:56
charl_yes i would most definitely want some tips if i do12:56
psychicistyeah, that's a shame because you were late12:56
charl_nah i was actually one of the first :D12:56
psychicisthahaha12:56
charl_but i didn't want to reserve a whole table for myself, what's the point12:56
charl_but yeah i was literally there at opening time12:57
psychicistyes, especially if you are alone12:57
psychicistbut now you've been there at least, so you are prepared for next time12:57
charl_yes exactly12:57
psychicistI was in ukraine the first time about 5 weeks ago and then 2 weeks ago I went again12:58
charl_how is it? never been to any east european country myself12:58
psychicistand now I‌ have several contacts there, so I‌ can always ask them12:58
charl_ah nice12:58
psychicistactually quite a few people speak english there, so it isn't all that scary12:58
charl_i was always too scared to travel in that direction on my own12:58
charl_because you hear all these things about the russian mafia and what not12:59
psychicistyeah12:59
psychicistbut it's not like that at all12:59
psychicistI was told I'd get beaten up but nothing of that came true either12:59
charl_yeah it's never as bad as it sounds12:59
charl_beaten up?! my goodness12:59
charl_do they do that to random people?13:00
psychicistmy colleagues at work told me so13:01
charl_wow13:01
psychicistand actually a ukrainian guy I‌ met on the bus told me a friend of his was beaten up in poland near the ukrainian border13:01
charl_what the...13:01
charl_no screw that i'm staying away from the east block :P13:01
psychicisthahaha13:03
psychicistit's not like that :P13:03
psychicistI have made some of my best friends in that region really13:03
charl_are people there better "earthed" than here?13:03
charl_better down to earth i mean13:03
psychicistyes, I‌ think so13:03
psychicistin Poland not so much, they seem to be scared of everyone13:04
charl_lol13:04
psychicistbut in Ukraine people are more friendly13:04
charl_interesting13:04
psychicistUkraine has always had many kinds of people living there, so they are used to it13:04
psychicistbut in Poland they are afraid of Germans and Russians, like a trauma or something13:04
charl_i heard they beat up jews in ukraine though?13:04
psychicistI've met a few jews in ukraine and not seen anything like that13:05
charl_ah ok, that's good to hear13:05
psychicistand the contacts I've made, I‌ guess about an equal number of guys and girls13:06
charl_when i travel out of country i usually go to germany, but that's only because i speak some german13:07
charl_france is beautiful but i speak absolutely no french whatsoever13:07
charl_so that makes things a _lot_ harder for me13:07
charl_but of course in all the large cities like paris you can get help in english too13:08
charl_but once you leave the city things change :P13:08
charl_like right here next to the border, the germans there don't speak english at all13:08
charl_you actually would have a much better time speaking dutch to them13:09
psychicistyeah, I‌ speak german very well too and french reasonably well13:17
psychicistand when I first came here last year I didn't speak any polish at all13:17
psychicistnow I‌ can at least manage a little bit and I'm going to polish course with a few colleagues so that helps a lot as well13:17
psychicistoh, I‌ didn't know that13:18
charl_well i live like 10km from germany :P13:23
charl_i go over the border as a matter of routine because you can buy stuff there that you can't buy here13:23
charl_i go to the bakeries a lot too13:23
charl_the germans make _real_ bread not the cr*p we call bread in NL13:24
psychicistyeah13:26
charl_hi Cantide 13:34
Cantidehello :)13:34

Cantidewhat about you?13:34
Cantidenot yet :)13:35
charl_cool good luck13:35
charl_i'm doing well13:35
charl_i'm still recovering from oktoberfest though13:35
Cantidehahaha13:35
Cantidenot a bad thing :)13:35
Cantidehi psychici1t :p13:36

JoTraGoRegional formats. English - South Africa. Issues with comma as decimal point. Whilst "Officially" the SA decimal point IS a comma, as correctly implemented in Ubuntu, in everyday user, and in most applications this is not practiced, and the more globally standard dot is used. Is there a way to retain the South African Settings, specifically the R for currency, and change the decimal point to dot?15:15
charl_there is no "global" standard15:18
charl_in europe we also use the comma15:18
charl_a dot separates thousands15:19
charl_where has this been posted?15:19
JoTraGoI am really just trying to find out if I can keep my regional format set to South Africa but change the decimla point from comma to dot/15:26
charl_oh sorry, this was a question you wanted to ask here?15:29
charl_i thought it was a copy from somewhere else, it's unusually well written for irc :)15:29
JoTraGoNo the problem I have is with accounting in GNU Cash, and working with Finaincials in Libre Office and gnumeric whihc pick up the Comma as decimal point from Ubuntu Regional Format. forcing use of the Comma. Whilst when transacting in online banks, Windows Southafrica region, uses Dot, etc 15:32
JoTraGoI recently madw a R30,000 rand error by inadvertently using a comma as a decimal in my online bank, so I was wondering if I can get round this somehow.15:33
charl_wow this is a big problem clearly15:33
charl_sounds like a mess, sorry i can't be of more help but i have never used gnu cash or financials15:34
JoTraGoI suspect it may be a problem commonly experienced by SA users of Ubuntu.15:35
charl_no idea you are the first person who ever asked anything about this (while i've been watching)15:35
JoTraGoAh! OK! Maybe it's just me then, or maybe most users dont bother to change the regional settings15:36
charl_i'm not sure, there is no proper global standardisation in this regard and software very often screws it up15:37
charl_it's the same with dates, i often have to ask myself which is the day and which is the month15:37
charl_because in europe we write the day first, then the month, then the year15:38
charl_the americans swapped the day and month around15:38
charl_so if you get 01/02/2013 for example you don't know if it's the first of february or the second january15:38
JoTraGoYep that's another one, after trying many approaches I have decided to standardise on the ISO std date format yyyymmdd. it works particularly well if you want to sort things on the date field. Otherwise I always write the 3 letter month to remove ambiguity eg 6 Jun 2013 or 2013 Jun 615:40
charl_yes me too15:41
charl_the iso standard is great15:42
JoTraGoA bit of Googling, indicates this amy be a good place to start    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Locale15:48
charl_it seems like you just want to edit LC_NUMERIC15:57
charl_http://askubuntu.com/questions/193251/how-to-set-all-locale-settings-in-ubuntu15:59
charl_seems fairly easy to change then15:59
charl_they are just a bunch of environment variables15:59
JoTraGoYep, I'll have a dig into that and give it a go.16:07
charl_cool, good luck !16:29
theblazehencharl_, friend is FINALLY sending me SFD video :p16:55
