TravisHello00:10
happyjoyhi00:12
TravisHow big of a HDD partition is good enough for xubuntu?00:13
happyjoyothers may happen along later. its best to state the issue and wait00:13
happyjoy8GB is the smallest i'd go00:13
happyjoyyou can do 600:13
TravisI am trying to partition my 80GB HDD into three sections.00:13
happyjoyfor?00:14
TravisOne for that nasty MegaSatan stuff.  One is for FreeDOS (So I can program some old radios).  The last is for Xubuntu00:14
happyjoyhowever you need the space you'll be good00:14
happyjoywin7/8 needs at least 20gb00:14
TravisWould 20GB be good enough for xubuntu?00:15
happyjoyyup00:15
happyjoyi use xubuntu on thumbdrives00:15
TravisWish I had a SATA adapter for this laptop.  I have an old 320GB HDD I ripped out of one of those external ones.00:15
happyjoyyou can get adapters, the issue is space00:16
TravisThat's why I want the 320 GB.00:17
phunyguydoes anyone know what it is about Xubuntu that makes it use system tray icons for update notifications?04:12
phunyguypackage, config, etc04:12
phunyguyI installed ubuntu-desktop package over an Xubuntu install, because I was testing some things, and in Unity it had those tray icons.... which I want to replicate on a straight ubunt instal.04:13
phunyguyinstall*04:13
phunyguyubuntu*04:13
phunyguysheesh04:13
Unit193update-notifier?04:15
phunyguythat is on a default ubuntu install.. so I am curious as to what makes it different04:18
phunyguyubuntu itself uses popups that are annoying.04:18
phunyguyI would rather have it be the tray icon version, same with apper.04:18
Unit193Raring or saucy?04:19
phunyguyraring04:19
Unit193(I have mangled versions of the indicator stuff, and killed the notifier long ago as it's a pain.)04:21
phunyguyyeah, it's just less of a pain in xubuntu.04:21
phunyguyin unity it bugs the heck out of you by popping up in your face.04:21
Unit193...Does the manager come up?04:22
phunyguysame with the "you need to reboot and this will stay open until you do"04:22
phunyguyit does.04:22
phunyguyI'm just curious as to what makes xubuntu different.04:22
Unit193/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/20_xubuntu-default-settings.gschema.override that might.04:23
phunyguyI shoulda kept the xubuntu ones.04:23
phunyguyahh nonexistent file.04:23
phunyguyso that may do it04:23
Unit193From xubuntu-default-settings04:24
phunyguyaahhh xubuntu-default-settings04:24
phunyguyhmmm that may pull in more than I want04:25
phunyguy:(04:25
phunyguysounds like a VM is in order.04:25
phunyguywait a minute04:26
phunyguyxfce4-notifyd04:26
phunyguylol?04:26
Unit193Much better than the "default" one.04:27
phunyguy:-/04:28
Unit193"notification-daemon"04:28
phunyguywhere is that executable normally located?04:28
phunyguyI installed it, but it isn't in /usr/bin04:28
Unit193It's a daemon, but it has a configuration tool at /usr/bin/xfce4-notifyd-config04:29
phunyguyyeah but how do you start the daemon04:30
phunyguy:(04:30
meh_Would anyone have suggestions for reducing bootime? I'm at 100 seconds! The machine booted faster before switching to linux...05:14

meh_baizon_:okay.05:18

baizonsorry was afk.05:47
JZAhi i got a liveSD (usb) but I notice that my installation is not persistant07:01
JZAafter a reboot I get the defautl desktop no config files07:01
JZAshould I disable some kind of fs switch07:01
JZAmaybe because I choose to 'try xubuntu before installing'07:02
JZAhas some kind of union-filesystem or something that makes a steady state07:02
JZAanyone around?07:20
elfynot many I'd guess07:26
elfyI'd assume if you've not got persistence you've not set it up to have it - a normal default usb image won't07:26
elfy!persistence07:27
ubottuTo have some persistent storage when using a Live CD, follow the instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDPersistence07:27
JZAelfy: thanks.07:34
JZAelfy: I am reading about it, seems is not that easy, since I am running on the liveUSB, I guess I need to re-download the iso and open it07:35
JZAand then do the initrd, I wonder if I cnan pass this as a boot argument07:35
JZAI want to install on an SD08:04

NaeblisHello. I'm running Xubuntu Precise on my laptop. And I'm a problem that I can't log in. The screen that asks for the password doesn't show, and I get a few messages like "checking battery state [ok]". The last message is "could not open a connection to your authentciation agent", and the screen is stuck there.16:38
NaeblisIf I press the shut down button, I get a couple more messages and it shuts down fine, though.16:39
